Maybe the birth of her child was a serious wake up call. Giving birth really is a life changing experience because we’re programmed to feel empathy toward our offspring. It seems like she had very serious Stockholm syndrome and it took giving birth to kindof snap her out of it. She still deserved time, don’t get me wrong, but it sounds like she was very mentally unwell and had someone intervened in their relationship sooner with psychological help, she might’ve never taken any part in this. I hope she’s gotten help since she was released or while she was in prison so she won’t be prone to this terrible kind of thing again.
i could empathize with charlene as a domestic abuse survivor, but this does NOT justify allowing so many innocent people to die. she had so many chances to take action & put a stop to it, she chose not to.

I don’t really understand why should Charlene be less guilty than her husband, when Myra Hindley was just as guilty as Ian Brady. It’s a really similar case to the Moors murders in nature and in power dynamic between the killers. Although, being in an abusive relationship could take that much of a toll on someone to not to see clearly on anything, but doesn’t qualify as a magical cover for all the negligence what she did as an accomplice.
I think it was purely from her giving them the truth that she got a lower sentence, without it the police would've had a hard time finding bodies and collecting enough evidence to tie it to them. Now, maybe he had the presence of mind to dress it up a bit with a clean sheet or some funky early 1980s bedspread (really thin things, those) but still! Or maybe the police, who'd been keeping an eye on Gerald, had spoken to the prospective buyer, or hell, maybe the buyer was a CI or something, idk, and told to ask Gerald if he'd throw the mattress in as part of the deal, who knows? Unfortunately at the time, DNA testing being was it was (or wasn't) they couldn't have done much with the blood other than store it. It wasn't all that many years ago that if a sample had more than one person's DNA in it, it was useless to investigators, they couldn't separate the codes to identify anything. Amazing how far we've come in 40 years. Sometimes it is easy to forget that the technology wasn't always there.

I'm confused about the whole story. Did we hear about the last victims first, in the first part? And what was the point of the first part? Didn't we only need the second part? The whole thing has confused me. In the second part when Eleanor said how many victims he was up to, I couldn't keep track of who/when. Sort of agree about the wife, but she could claim she feared it could be her if she didn't comply. And she claims she didn't harm them. She just didn't report it or take heroic measures. Which if true, is a lesser crime. Although it's clearly still a huge crime, as reflected in her sentencing. And she did eventually report all the crimes and co-operate, when confronted. As far as we know.

That's because the last victims are the reason why Charlene and her husband got caught; it's all because the friend of the last victims noticed the car and license plate and had an exact time and place where the couple was last seen. The other victims were talked about in the second video because they weren't known to be the victims until Charlene's confession where she gave roughly remembered places of which each victim was found, how they were killed, and how they got the victims. Although I agree with you that Charlene wasn't necessarily the murderer and her only crimes were not saying anything and stopping it, she did help him lure in people and helped him be able to murder without a second thought. She might not have had the I'll intent he did but she was still part of the reason 10 people were brutally murdered.

My parents always told me that if someone puts a weapon to you in public, you immediately surrender. But that’s a good way to be murdered. I think the most efficient thing would to be run and scream at the top of your lungs like there is no tomorrow like that is the last time you’re going to ever scream. I think it's easier said than done. Like imagine being in the situation, you're thinking this person will shoot me if I don't do as he says. This is what all this man's victims did, of course if they knew what was gonna happen they would've caused a scene and tried to gey away instead of getting in that van with him but at that time they thought listening to him is their only option and hope of surviving. What I mean is that with a gun pointed at you, your mind goes blank. I know it's awful and I hope none of us finds ourselves in a situation like this.
I really struggle to watch a rape scene on tv, the screams are very disturbing and just the sheer violence of it is horrific. How a woman can lead another woman to such terror, or an innocent 13yr old to her death without much persuasion (Gerald didn't have to put a gun to her head) and can fall asleep to the screams is beyond evil. She should have had life in prison.
I don’t care that Charlene was a victim of domestic violence, it is a completely separate issue. I was not only physically abused by a partner, I was also sexually assaulted by him countless times over a 2 year period. I was weak and stupid and I stayed too long but there is literally nothing that could have been done to me to influence me to do what she did. There was something sick inside of her that had nothing to do with the abuse. Period.
so true. however everybody knows about rape victims and hears rumours/truths yet we don’t feel the emotional damage or connection to the situation unless its you or someone your really close with. therefore she may have disassociated with the events. she also hasnt said how she felt in the very beginning, if she says that it messed with her mind to the point of numbness, allowing her to sleep as she could no longer emotionally attach, she may have been sectioned, admitted to a mental institution, resulting in never being able to have her child. those places aren’t nice all things her lawyers may have said to her, her husband saying she did drugs was detrimental to her case to prove innocence, clearly. she had knowledge of what was going on and assisted in abduction and that in my opinion is what she is guilty of. she didn’t commit the same crimes as her husband and he didn’t expect her to. there isn’t any direct accounts where she has described and explained the abuse that occurred. perhaps maybe she felt assisting would be that it was a way out of her abuse, to allow him to abuse others. she also knows he abused children, she doesn’t want her baby to be abused. don’t get me wrong she is guilty, but she isn’t guilty for the same crimes as him

Before you empathize with Charlene, remember that she called herself a victim knowing that the families of the people she lured to death can watch her.
Charlene is equally to blame as Gerald. So many times she could have asked her Dad for help to be put into protection if she was so scared of her husband. Luring those innocent victims is encouraging his behaviour. There is such a thing called duress and coercion, but this wasn't a one-time crime, this was ten times, ten opportunities to get the hell out of there, or at least tipped off someone to get help.
And in her case, not only did she have a rich family that could've protected her, but she actually had a sure fire way to get him locked up for good. Even after the first double kidnapping/rape/murder, she could've gone to the police and he would've been locked up, with no way to get to her at all. A lot of abuse victims don't think it's worth telling the police because they don't think they'll be believed and assume the abuse will get worse after the abuser finds out that they tried to get away - but after he murdered people, that just wouldn't have been the case with him anymore. And yeah, she definitely could've tipped somebody off too. She could've literally called the police and gotten him caught red-handed when he was raping the woman in their driveway and she was alone inside their house, or when he was raping the other woman inside their house and she was just taking a snooze in the next room

There's the argument that Charlene loved her husband so much she'd do anything for him, and that potentially she was brainwashed by him. However, she'd still need to have a twisted part of herself to accept what he was doing! There's no way a mentally sound person would help someone else rape and kill multiple people, married or not. She had the option to leave him and start a new life elsewhere, but apparently his desperation for sex slaves wasn't that big of an issue to her.. in my opinion her sentence should've been AT LEAST doubled.

Reminds me of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Such a similar dynamic, even a similar end story with her spilling all the beans, getting a sweet deal. It also has the same question- Were the women victims or willing participants? I think the answer is "both".
With the Bernardo/Homolka case she was able to finesse everyone and say she wasn’t a willing participant until the videotapes emerged after she made that deal. The transcripts are a harrowing read, but she actively was involved in raping her victims, including her own sister, as it’s on tape. The murders may have been driven by her jealousy, too. No remorse. Charlene’s saving grace is that she didn’t assault the girls too, not that that is anything to write home about in full context..

Then another person walked by. First guy looked clean cut but made our skin crawl. Next guy looked scruffy, but made us feel safe. First was Paul Bernardo, second was an undercover cop following him. He was arrested that day or the next. Best lesson in ‘trust your instinct’ I could have had at age 16. We had no idea who it was until the next day. Still goes me goosebumps.

Charlene was a monster too. If you remember, the very first killing they did, she didn’t hesitate, nor did she hesitate in the subsequent murders after realizing for sure what was going on. She could have called the police while he was committing his crimes instead of doing things like napping on the couch. While entirely possible he could have gotten violent with Charlene, he did seem apt to take his time in his crimes. And she knew this, she was there for every one. I thought she was manipulative and tried to play herself as a victim to avoid criticism. BTW, happy Halloween everyone! 😊🎉
This case remind me of when I was little and my mom said that if I ever found myself in a situation where somebody threatened me with a weapon to go somewhere else, I should scream and fight as hard as I could 'cause what they'd do to me would be so much worse than death
honestly as someone who went through SA when i was a child i would rather have just been killed, and my case wasnt even close to as horrifically violent as these girls, but i still would rather have died than have had to go through and still deal with what i have to deal with 15-16 years later.
I had this exact thought. I'm still confused. If the friend jumped in the car when the 2 killers were in a house what kept them there? They were probably told something like 'do as we say and we will let you live, if you try and get out the car we will kill you" something had to keep them there. It's nice to see that they immediately told there friend to get out of the car, at least he was protected.
@@rinrinrinnz I think the point is that Craig and Mary were alone in that unlocked car and Gerarld was away from them for a few minutes. It all depends on what reason Gerarld gave for telling them to sit in the car. It could've been something like a staged robbery and if they didn't comply they would be hurt. If they knew his true intentions they would've jumped out of that car when the friend got in. Having a female accomplice probably made the couple a bit more at ease rather than if it was just a lone male with a gun.

The way she willingly lured young women into the hands of a demon is blood curdling. She quickly turned against him when she had a chance to save herself. nahhhh as an abuse survivor myself, I am disgusted with Charlene's actions - or inaction. she willingly lured those girls to their torture and death. being traumatised does not give you the right to abuse and traumatise others. she received a far too light of a sentence she didn't suddenly grow a conscience - it was a move to get her a lesser sentence. if she was really having a crisis of conscience, she would have put a stop to it way before they were caught. I don't doubt that man was abusive towards her but she still had a choice to not aid him in these terrible crimes.

I understand the abuse and trauma she went through, I was in an abusive relationship for 11 years and I know it’s not as simple as ‘just leave’, particularly when he is very capable of murder. But she lured innocent children to be raped and murdered. In the thick of the abuse I went through, I would rather just be killed myself, the thought of what those innocent people all went through is horrific. She should have received a life sentence.

It's so disturbing & horrifying how _easily_ a young person/child can be lured into a trap (by a complete stranger), or how many people accept rides from those they don't know when that's obviously one of the worst things you can do. I have particular contempt for the female partners of these serial killers... Another good example would be Myra Hindley (/Ian Brady). They take advantage of the the baseline 'trust' a lot of people (especially young people/children) have in women & use it to lure them to their torturous demise. No punishment we can carry out would be good enough.
This all took place decades ago, when sex offenders didn't have a registry, and people were more trusting of strangers and hitchhiking. These days, unless you're a very young child, it'd be harder to lure someone in like this. He also had a gun and forced several of his victims to go with him.

Something about Charlene being able to relax enough to sit in the living room and take a nap while her husband assaults a woman in his bathroom isn't sitting right with me. Normally, I would empathize with a victim of abuse but...idk. I mean personally, that would've put me on edge especially knowing full well what was happening behind that door. This is truly one of the worst cases I’ve ever heard. And i watch A LOT of true crime videos/documentaries/shows etc. Charlene was just as guilty as him and she should have gotten the same punishment. She didnt have remorse or any guilt until SHE was in trouble and that tells me she is just as sick. May all these victims RIP and i hope their families have some peace.
Charlene had every opportunity to get away from this. She had a support system, she had a good childhood, she had access to love and support. She did it because she loved him, she's no victim.
Hopefully Linda never actually regained consciousness. It’s likely she would have still been breathing following the strangulation but probably with such extensive injuries that she wasn’t aware of anything. At least, I like to think that she didn’t wake up before suffocating on sand, which would be utterly horrific.

Charlene seems incredibly disconnected from the reality of what she did to these CHILDREN and teenagers. She showed such a disturbing lack of empathy that I really don't think she understands that even if she was beat by her husband, she was a willing participant in all 10 of these cases and to call herself a victim... almost trying to relate to the teenagers she terrorized...is just a slap in the face to all of the victims and their families . She deserves life in prison.

It really makes me think what happened to Charlene in her teenage years for her to do such a 180. Those kinds of volte/faces are never without a reason. And given what toxic, unhealthy feelings she had towards her husband, even knowing what he was capable of just corroborates the idea that sg had really fucked her up in the head and the rest was just consequences. Sure, she was also a victim but she had a family, she had an out, she had somewhere to go and was in an actual position to ask for help (living w her father). While victims oftentimes don't feel they can leave, her situation was very different in a lot of respects and I get the sense she actually didn't want to, not out of fear but because of that unhealthy attachment to Gerard. Either way, she should've been locked up for life.

Maybe the birth of her child was a serious wake up call. Giving birth really is a life changing experience because we’re programmed to feel empathy toward our offspring. It seems like she had very serious Stockholm syndrome and it took giving birth to kindof snap her out of it. She still deserved time, don’t get me wrong, but it sounds like she was very mentally unwell and had someone intervened in their relationship sooner with psychological help, she might’ve never taken any part in this. I hope she’s gotten help since she was released or while she was in prison so she won’t be prone to this terrible kind of thing again.

Now, maybe he had the presence of mind to dress it up a bit with a clean sheet or some funky early 1980s bedspread (really thin things, those) but still! Or maybe the police, who'd been keeping an eye on Gerald, had spoken to the prospective buyer, or hell, maybe the buyer was a CI or something, idk, and told to ask Gerald if he'd throw the mattress in as part of the deal, who knows? Unfortunately at the time, DNA testing being was it was (or wasn't) they couldn't have done much with the blood other than store it. It wasn't all that many years ago that if a sample had more than one person's DNA in it, it was useless to investigators, they couldn't separate the codes to identify anything. Amazing how far we've come in 40 years. Sometimes it is easy to forget that the technology wasn't always there.

I'm confused about the whole story. Did we hear about the last victims first, in the first part? And what was the point of the first part? Didn't we only need the second part? The whole thing has confused me. In the second part when Eleanor said how many victims he was up to, I couldn't keep track of who/when. Sort of agree about the wife, but she could claim she feared it could be her if she didn't comply. And she claims she didn't harm them. She just didn't report it or take heroic measures. Which if true, is a lesser crime. Although it's clearly still a huge crime, as reflected in her sentencing. And she did eventually report all the crimes and co-operate, when confronted. As far as we know.

That's because the last victims are the reason why Charlene and her husband got caught; it's all because the friend of the last victims noticed the car and license plate and had an exact time and place where the couple was last seen. The other victims were talked about in the second video because they weren't known to be the victims until Charlene's confession where she gave roughly remembered places of which each victim was found, how they were killed, and how they got the victims.
Although I agree with you that Charlene wasn't necessarily the murderer and her only crimes were not saying anything and stopping it, she did help him lure in people and helped him be able to murder without a second thought. She might not have had the I'll intent he did but she was still part of the reason 10 people were brutally murdered.

Cases like these make me realize that if someone ever points a weapon at me in a public place and tells me to do something, I will do everything in my power to NOT do that thing. Some killers break in and act like they are just there to rob in order to be able to get the husband to go along with getting tied up so he wouldn't fight, and then after he has the man tied up he rapes and kills the woman and then kills the man on his way out. Not there to rob at all. No reason to tie anyone up if you're just there to rob the house. They can lock us in a room TOGETHER... unrestrained...besides that I'll take my chances.
My parents always told me that if someone puts a weapon to you in public, you immediately surrender. But that’s a good way to be murdered. I think the most efficient thing would to be run and scream at the top of your lungs like there is no tomorrow like that is the last time you’re going to ever scream. And if screaming isn’t getting anyone’s attention, somehow start knocking shit over.
Tip: if someone comes up to you demanding you go somewhere with them do whatever you have to, to not go. Cause a scene and start a riot. They’ll most likely back down for fear of people seeing them. They’re intentions are like to kill you if they want you in a different location. Even if they threaten you.

I think it's easier said than done. Like imagine being in the situation, you're thinking this person will shoot me if I don't do as he says. This is what all this man's victims did, of course if they knew what was gonna happen they would've caused a scene and tried to gey away instead of getting in that van with him but at that time they thought listening to him is their only option and hope of surviving. I really struggle to watch a rape scene on tv, the screams are very disturbing and just the sheer violence of it is horrific. How a woman can lead another woman to such terror, or an innocent 13yr old to her death without much persuasion (Gerald didn't have to put a gun to her head) and can fall asleep to the screams is beyond evil. She should have had life in prison.
I don’t care that Charlene was a victim of domestic violence, it is a completely separate issue. I was not only physically abused by a partner, I was also sexually assaulted by him countless times over a 2 year period. I was weak and stupid and I stayed too long but there is literally nothing that could have been done to me to influence me to do what she did. There was something sick inside of her that had nothing to do with the abuse. Period.

so true. however everybody knows about rape victims and hears rumours/truths yet we don’t feel the emotional damage or connection to the situation unless its you or someone your really close with. therefore she may have disassociated with the events. she also hasnt said how she felt in the very beginning, if she says that it messed with her mind to the point of numbness, allowing her to sleep as she could no longer emotionally attach, she may have been sectioned, admitted to a mental institution, resulting in never being able to have her child. those places aren’t nice all things her lawyers may have said to her, her husband saying she did drugs was detrimental to her case to prove innocence, clearly. she had knowledge of what was going on and assisted in abduction and that in my opinion is what she is guilty of. she didn’t commit the same crimes as her husband and he didn’t expect her to. there isn’t any direct accounts where she has described and explained the abuse that occurred. perhaps maybe she felt assisting would be that it was a way out of her abuse, to allow him to abuse others. she also knows he abused children, she doesn’t want her baby to be abused. don’t get me wrong she is guilty, but she isn’t guilty for the same crimes as him

I see Charlene as a willful victim. She had the ability to leave, the others did not. Especially with her Dad being so wealthy, she could have gotten out if she would have wanted. If she would have come forward after the first one then yes, she was a victim but to continue.... she was doing that of her own free will.

Charlene is equally to blame as Gerald. So many times she could have asked her Dad for help to be put into protection if she was so scared of her husband. Luring those innocent victims is encouraging his behaviour. There is such a thing called duress and coercion, but this wasn't a one-time crime, this was ten times, ten opportunities to get the hell out of there, or at least tipped off someone to get help.

And in her case, not only did she have a rich family that could've protected her, but she actually had a sure fire way to get him locked up for good. Even after the first double kidnapping/rape/murder, she could've gone to the police and he would've been locked up, with no way to get to her at all. A lot of abuse victims don't think it's worth telling the police because they don't think they'll be believed and assume the abuse will get worse after the abuser finds out that they tried to get away - but after he murdered people, that just wouldn't have been the case with him anymore.
And yeah, she definitely could've tipped somebody off too. She could've literally called the police and gotten him caught red-handed when he was raping the woman in their driveway and she was alone inside their house, or when he was raping the other woman inside their house and she was just taking a snooze in the next room

it's the fact Charlene spoke to the police beforehand and she had the opportunity to tell them there and then everything that has gone on and she chose not to. she deserves more than 16 years.
After the first two girls were murdered, Charlene is every bit as guilty as Gerald. Abused and afraid, yes. But she had opportunities and the means to leave the situation.
She was waiting for him in the car while he went and murdered the girls. If she was afraid and did not want to be there why didn't she speed away and get help and leave him stranded?

There's the argument that Charlene loved her husband so much she'd do anything for him, and that potentially she was brainwashed by him. However, she'd still need to have a twisted part of herself to accept what he was doing! There's no way a mentally sound person would help someone else rape and kill multiple people, married or not. She had the option to leave him and start a new life elsewhere, but apparently his desperation for sex slaves wasn't that big of an issue to her.. in my opinion her sentence should've been AT LEAST doubled.

Reminds me of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Such a similar dynamic, even a similar end story with her spilling all the beans, getting a sweet deal. It also has the same question- Were the women victims or willing participants? I think the answer is "both".
With the Bernardo/Homolka case she was able to finesse everyone and say she wasn’t a willing participant until the videotapes emerged after she made that deal. The transcripts are a harrowing read, but she actively was involved in raping her victims, including her own sister, as it’s on tape. The murders may have been driven by her jealousy, too. No remorse. Charlene’s saving grace is that she didn’t assault the girls too, not that that is anything to write home about in full context..

Then another person walked by. First guy looked clean cut but made our skin crawl. Next guy looked scruffy, but made us feel safe. First was Paul Bernardo, second was an undercover cop following him. He was arrested that day or the next. Best lesson in ‘trust your instinct’ I could have had at age 16. We had no idea who it was until the next day. Still goes me goosebumps.

Charlene was a monster too. If you remember, the very first killing they did, she didn’t hesitate, nor did she hesitate in the subsequent murders after realizing for sure what was going on. She could have called the police while he was committing his crimes instead of doing things like napping on the couch. While entirely possible he could have gotten violent with Charlene, he did seem apt to take his time in his crimes. And she knew this, she was there for every one. This case remind me of when I was little and my mom said that if I ever found myself in a situation where somebody threatened me with a weapon to go somewhere else, I should scream and fight as hard as I could 'cause what they'd do to me would be so much worse than death
honestly as someone who went through SA when i was a child i would rather have just been killed, and my case wasnt even close to as horrifically violent as these girls, but i still would rather have died than have had to go through and still deal with what i have to deal with 15-16 years later.

I had this exact thought. I'm still confused. If the friend jumped in the car when the 2 killers were in a house what kept them there? They were probably told something like 'do as we say and we will let you live, if you try and get out the car we will kill you" something had to keep them there. It's nice to see that they immediately told there friend to get out of the car, at least he was protected.

@@rinrinrinnz I think the point is that Craig and Mary were alone in that unlocked car and Gerarld was away from them for a few minutes. It all depends on what reason Gerarld gave for telling them to sit in the car. It could've been something like a staged robbery and if they didn't comply they would be hurt. If they knew his true intentions they would've jumped out of that car when the friend got in. Having a female accomplice probably made the couple a bit more at ease rather than if it was just a lone male with a gun.

nahhhh as an abuse survivor myself, I am disgusted with Charlene's actions - or inaction. she willingly lured those girls to their torture and death. being traumatised does not give you the right to abuse and traumatise others. she received a far too light of a sentence she didn't suddenly grow a conscience - it was a move to get her a lesser sentence. if she was really having a crisis of conscience, she would have put a stop to it way before they were caught. I don't doubt that man was abusive towards her but she still had a choice to not aid him in these terrible crimes.

In the thick of the abuse I went through, I would rather just be killed myself, the thought of what those innocent people all went through is horrific. She should have received a life sentence.

It's so disturbing & horrifying how _easily_ a young person/child can be lured into a trap (by a complete stranger), or how many people accept rides from those they don't know when that's obviously one of the worst things you can do.
I have particular contempt for the female partners of these serial killers... Another good example would be Myra Hindley (/Ian Brady). They take advantage of the the baseline 'trust' a lot of people (especially young people/children) have in women & use it to lure them to their torturous demise. No punishment we can carry out would be good enough.
This all took place decades ago, when sex offenders didn't have a registry, and people were more trusting of strangers and hitchhiking. These days, unless you're a very young child, it'd be harder to lure someone in like this. He also had a gun and forced several of his victims to go with him.

This is truly one of the worst cases I’ve ever heard. And i watch A LOT of true crime videos/documentaries/shows etc. Charlene was just as guilty as him and she should have gotten the same punishment. She didnt have remorse or any guilt until SHE was in trouble and that tells me she is just as sick. May all these victims RIP and i hope their families have some peace.
Charlene had every opportunity to get away from this. She had a support system, she had a good childhood, she had access to love and support.

Could you please look at the Cleo Smith case here in Australia? After 19 days kidnapped she was found alive today in a locked room in a house! Went missing from her family’s tent. So interesting and it’s just warmed the hearts of our country this morning waking up to that news that she is okay!!
Charlene seems incredibly disconnected from the reality of what she did to these CHILDREN and teenagers. She showed such a disturbing lack of empathy that I really don't think she understands that even if she was beat by her husband, she was a willing participant in all 10 of these cases and to call herself a victim... almost trying to relate to the teenagers she terrorized...is just a slap in the face to all of the victims and their families . She deserves life in prison.

It really makes me think what happened to Charlene in her teenage years for her to do such a 180. Those kinds of volte/faces are never without a reason. And given what toxic, unhealthy feelings she had towards her husband, even knowing what he was capable of just corroborates the idea that sg had really fucked her up in the head and the rest was just consequences. Sure, she was also a victim but she had a family, she had an out, she had somewhere to go and was in an actual position to ask for help (living w her father). While victims oftentimes don't feel they can leave, her situation was very different in a lot of respects and I get the sense she actually didn't want to, not out of fear but because of that unhealthy attachment to Gerard. Either way, she should've been locked up for life.
