  • (Test starts at 0:22 mark) This is a picture comparison of a 4K Blu-Ray player, a 1080 HD Blu-Ray Player, a DVD, an Apple TV streaming an iTunes digital download and a phone AirPlaying an Ultraviolet digital download. The same films were used in the comparisons, on the same television.
    This battle of the best picture quality shows what each device looks like at their default factory settings AND their optimal picture settings. With a lot of terms thrown at people like UHD and HDR, or the difference between 2160p and 1080 may be confusing for some, the real question is "What looks best on my TV?". This review will clearly show what you can expect to see on each device. Feel free to ask any questions/comments/suggestions below.

    tv doesn't support HDR and it's a 2015 model. Big difference between 2015 M series vizio and 2016 M series. the only reason the 4K video looked bad is because he needed to adjust the settings. You have to experience 4K with HDR first hand to see the improvements over Blu-ray.

      NMEMEDIC1 This test was not to compare HDR, its to compare 4K. Not all 4K TVs are HDR, not all HDR TVs are 10-but. Of course, if I were to have one of the best TVs on the market and the most expensive 4K player, I would have the best picture. I made sure to mention the type of TV/Player/settings in the description so there was no misinformation. I have witnessed much higher-end 4K HDR10 quality and I agree with you that it's a great picture. Many friends family of mine have 4K TVs, and maybe half of the are HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Too many people view 4K videos on TH-cam and think that any/all 4K items will deliver the best picture ever, which is false. As this test shows, "4K" alone will not deliver the picture that everyday buyers are expecting from the "hype". Comparing HDR verses non-HDR would be a completely different test/topic.

      Davie Films Also tv size matters as well. 60" and higher is proper for 4K res. I have a 60" LG UH8500, 4K is a pretty good difference. Also some 4K movies weren't shot at true 4K res. Some are 2K and upscaled to 4K.

    • @ohnder
      @ohnder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Pacific Rim is not 4K. It's just upscaled HD image. You should've tried native 4K like Lucy. And as others have said, UHD is about HDR and not resolution primarily.

    • @asadacoehlo7964
      @asadacoehlo7964 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But that makes 4K irrelevant for any TV under 50". 1080p with HDR would give pretty much the same effect, but for a lot less money without the gimmicky resolution.

    • @beatleszilla
      @beatleszilla 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Asada Coehlo Wrong, actually. Since 4K has 4 times as many pixels, that means brighter colors can be more easily represented. Besides, I don't think we'll ever see a 1080p TV with HDR released in the future, and there isn't really any content in 1080p HDR, where as 99% of all 4K content is also HDR. And prices will drop, they already have a lot.

    I honestly think the reason the blu ray looks almost identical to the 4k blu ray is because the blu ray is getting upscale on your 4k TV. Have a blu ray play on a full HD TV side by side to a uhd movie playing on a 4k TV and the difference is pretty stunning

      That's because Pacific Rim was only mastered at 2K resolution. It's effectively still 1080p on the 4K disk: realorfake4k.com/my-product/pacific-rim/

    Couple of things stood out to me.
    1) It doesn't seem like the test TV is HDR capable, Its an entry-level TV with probably low nits, so even with HDR the difference would probably not be that great since it doesn't get as bright. But the referenced TV seems to be one of those early 'just 4K only' Tv's.
    2)4K movie's selling point is about more then just resolution now, they've added HDR (High Dynamic Range) which increases brightness and color spectrum. Dolby Vision is currently the best form of HDR out right now, without even reaching it max potential until more advanced 12-bit TV's come out.
    3)4K movies almost all of them now have an Atmos track which has more accurate placement of sound in speakers and allows 'height' effects to create sound overhead.

    This is not a valid comparison when it comes to color between 4k and BD. Those films are encoded to be displayed in HDR. And being that your tv and player used for this comparison are down scaling the colors, we're not getting native results. The BD is displayed properly on your 8-bit panel. Upgrade to HDR and the resolution of 4k will become more apparent.

    • @trx420fm1
      @trx420fm1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The resolution of 4K is noticeable when set up against 1080p. 4k alone set beside 4k with HDR is noticeable by the color range not the resolution. The resolution is the same but the colors are more saturated and vibrant with HDR, that is what High Dynamic Range is for! colors not resolution.

    • @TheMysteriousKnight
      @TheMysteriousKnight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Meh, the player doesn't matter THAT much. People seriously over rate the importance of the players. A standard Xbox one S should give a great picture with hdr.
      HOWEVER, the tv is very important. A lot of companies claim that their tv's support HDR however if you look at the fine print, it states that they support the playback of 10 bit files and that it won't actually play it in 10bit since the tv is only 8 bit.
      I do believe that the guy in the video does have an 8bit tv so the tests aren't exactly accurate

  • @chrichtonsworld1
    @chrichtonsworld1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    It probably is mentioned several times already but I do feel I have to state it yet again. 4K on it's own doesn't do that much. It's the HDR that does the real magic. If your TV doesn't have that functionality it basically makes it useless. I also need to point out that not all physical media are created equal. I have blu ray discs that look worse than certain DVD's (played and upscaled on same PS3). There are so many other things that play a role when it comes to image quality.

    If you want to do a real test, use a proper 4K UHD/HDR TV with Wide Color and 10-bit panels then you will notice the difference. Using a cheap budget "4K TV" then telling everyone "Oh, there's no difference" is just stupid and completely disingenuous.

      Ronan Dee wtf are you talking about? You can get a proper HDR Enabled TV for less than $1,300 NOT $5,000. Depending on what you are watching the difference is noticeable, whether you want to pay that is up to you. But don't be willfully ignorant and spread stupidity. The point of the video is to show the difference and when the test isn't even using an HDR TV, much less a 10 bit/wide color panel.

    • @WriteJus
      @WriteJus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michelle Alexandria I was wondering the same things that you said. I didn't hear anything about UHD. It seems like the set up isn't trying to display the colors available... thus making it look worse. I'm still learning about 4K tvs, but I do know that too many people aren't doing the proper research in buying tvs, and then go and make inaccurate tests.

    I know it wasn't the point of this video as you've pointed out in the comments multiple times, but as a general observation IMO HDR is more noticeable of an improvement over 1080P than simply 4K resolution alone. Reason I say this is because I had the same Vizio M65 without HDR and upgraded to a 65" Samsung KS8000 with HDR10 and it's a night/day difference. So much better. It's a shame so many non-HDR sets were sold in 2013-2015 because they were really kind of a sham IMO. It's like they half-assed them because HDR wasn't matured enough yet. Guess that's consumer electronics for ya. :)

    Yeah at the time of this video recording (Last Year). There wasn't that much difference between a Blue-Ray and a 4k disk (when played both on the same UHD player/TV). However, since then newer TVs, Players, and improved decoding have came out which help make a bigger difference. Say around 62% depending on which film you playing on said device/display. Plus to get a bigger difference. One needs to play a Blue-Ray on a basic, non-upscaling, blueray player and the 4k in a UHD player. Since if you put the BR into a uhd it naturally get around a 18% bump in quaintly. Great Video either way. An still relevant for those who still on the fiance whether or not to jump onto the 4k format bandwagon or wait a few more years for pricing to come down/more options to pick from. Have a good day.
    Edit: Also, if you want to see a 4K transfer that will knock your socks off -- pick up a copy of "Life of Pi"

      I know this comment is over 2 years old, but I wanted to clarify that I said " Decoding" -- But you are correct that the Encoding have remained the same since 4K Disk came out. And by Decoding I mean how the Player decodes the data and how the TV process the HDR signal. Back then TV had a horrible habit of crushing blacks and blowing out highlights.

  • @wesfishcare

    TRUE 4K actually has 4x the resolution than 1080p and HDR is night-and-day to SDR, your TV is a old model, with no TRUE HDR support, poor peak HDR brightness, movie was finished at 2K NOT 4K, shouldve used a live-action movie with a TRUE 4K rescan of original film elements (Like Léon: The Professional) or a movie digitally filmed in 4K, with 4K CGI, and finished at 4K (Like The Dark Knight).
    Uninformed and biased
    PS: 2K only has about 50% more pixels than 1080p, compared to 4K which has 426% more pixels than 1080p, so 2K is analogous to 1080p

    Hdr gets a bad wrap because everyone is so used to bright smashed color ranges. High Dynamic Range is supposed to reveal MORE detail by expanding the amount of colors shown on the screen. The reason the colors look so different sometimes is becuase you're finally seeing what it's supposed to look like with the benefit of true blacks.

    • @THEBATMAN28AHH
      @THEBATMAN28AHH 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mike P with is closer. When a film is shot, an infinite amount of color is captured to the film. When the film is transferred and sampled to digital, an infinite amount of data is not possible. So HDR does the next best thing and samples at 10 or 12 bits of color instead of the normal 8. So yes, HDR will always produce the closest to true colors. Movies that are shot digitally are different since it has to be shot in 10 or 12 bit to have more color, sadly i don't have a definite answer on hand as to what bit depth they shoot at.

    • @THEBATMAN28AHH
      @THEBATMAN28AHH 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mike P film does in fact have all that color 😅. The problem with that however is that the 10 and 12 bit depths that we are transferring to are really pushing this threshold where we can bo longer tell the difference. Film captures everything you point it at. Detail, color, you name it. It's just our usual methods of sampling them for dvd and blu day were not even close to presenting them at good quality because data rates were low. 4k UHD discs are able to hold so much more data where we can now show something close to the original film. Whenever we shoot on film it's already as best it's going to get. Digital is different because we can keep upgrading the parameters but the same issue applies. We will get to a point where there's no discernible difference.

    One thing I wanted to add - if you think the iTunes 1080p stream and Blu-ray looked equally great, you need a better TV. iTunes streams (especially the downloads) are bitrate starved at 1080p and full of artifacts. I've done my own comparisons. Most times I choose the regular Blu-ray cause I just don't have that great of a TV. But I have had some 4K UHD discs and yes the image looks slightly sharper. The real benefit in 4K UHD is the HDR/Dolby Vision and immersive audio. There are some movies too that I'm okay with just having on a DVD with an upscaling player.

    To all of those who can't tell the difference between 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray, you all need to understand that in order to better tell the difference your 4K TV needs to be capable of HDR10 and/or Dolby Vision. Once you have those, 4K Blu-rays blow 1080p Blu-rays and especially DVDs (seriously, that format needs to just die) out of the water. And in the audio department, 4K Blu-rays has the two new epic object audio formats that you won't find on DVD at all and only on certain Blu-rays, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

If your tv has bad HDR support there is noe reason to go for a 4k player unnless you want the atmos track which then would require a decent home theater setup tp even sound right. And not every 4k disc is made equally, i would sa Life of Pi is probably the best one I have seen, with hdr the difference is insane. If what you’re saying is true 4K would be dead there’s something going on that you either don’t have control of Raddson the 4K back because 4K does seem to do right that’s right somethings going on you better do some investigation it’s probably in your 4K oh I don’t know what kind of TV you’re playing into unfortunately Vizio doesn’t use the best components they don’t manufacture their own sense and that’s a poor judge even the answer is what you probably have or the AP still not the reference you need to use a high-grade TV to really demonstrate what 4K will do and there’s several out there that I made a recommendation to many people will be a series 6 mini LED in a 55 inch under $1000 and it’s a great TV do your reviews especially a new 2022 model

    Can I add that this may have potentially affected results but since this is a movie heavy with CGI, most of the rendering would have been done in 2k (Full HD) and therefore when transferred onto 4K bluray, you are still getting effectively the same quality of the standard Bluray. But also the 4K has HDR which will require a capable HDR display or will look very washed out as you have experienced. If you want to try another movie I would suggest something like 2001 a space Odyssey, from when I tested them the difference was obvious. Also one big advantage of 4K bluray beside picture is audio, with many attempting to place an Atmos soundtrack onto the disk which most blurays won't features. However, really enjoyed the review and you are highlighting a good point, that depending on your set up, the expensive content may not make a difference and everyone should get what works for them :)

And like you said why by 4k if TV and computer aren't prepared to deliver real constant 4k (not that we see much of a diference in normal speed or high speed images (unless steady equipment is used). Although to those who prefer the images to tremble to give the realistic effect (damage deeply your eyes)

    Well ur TV doesn't support HDR, that's why the colors on the 4k version look terrible

    1080p on my 4k is clear enough on my my 43 inch 4k. I played stramger things in 4k and it looked worse then in 1080p. So 2160p tv at 1080p content 120hz for the win

    I really don't care I would by Blu-ray and DVD seems like 4k is for people who only care about having the latest CD format.

      If you think that then lock yourself in a room, do some research and educate yourself. Using morons like the one in the video as a point of reference is a poor start.

    It seems that 4K requires quite a bit of calibration to look good. Blu-ray sometimes can look better than 4K.

    it's because your TV sucks and doesn't have real HDR. Try this test on an LG OLED and the 4K blows blu ray and streaming out of the water.

    But could the source material also affect the results. It seems like you mainly chose dark movies? What about movies that have bright colours? Like Encanto or others?

    as somebody mention before you dont see much difference in 4k vs Blue because the standard size for hollywood movies is 2k, only some Netflix series and movies are in native 4k or more.

    You also need to consider that many 4K Blu-Rays are actually shot at less than 4K and / or finished at less than 4K. Legit 4K BluRays will have clear advantage over the standard 1080p Blu-Ray. I compared the bluray of "Jumanji" with the newly released 4K BluRay and the difference was there. Not only in the colors but in sharpness, picture clarity etc.
    I'm curious to know if there's a big difference between 4K iTunes movies and 4K BluRays!

      Mike P I know about streaming compression. But iTunes is far superior than Netflix and other streaming services because it has an higher bitrate since it’s owned content. In terms of audio, iTunes still lacks the 3D-Audio formats you mentioned.

      Mike P iTunes is definitely better than Netflix, I can tell you. And its 4K HDR movies are damn close to their 4K Blu-Ray counterparts. I don’t have VUDU. I agree, they should improve the sound quality to be uncompressed, supporting both DTS-HD MA and TrueHD.

    4ks a bit of a gimmick unless you've got an absurdly large screen.

    My favorite is Blu Ray, currently ordinary 1080 Blu Ray, and the player I'm using is a Samsung BD-J5700(2015 model), and I have a 24 inch Vizio D24-D1 smart TV, my TV sux because it only has 1 HDMI port, and I can't hook up two HDMI devices at once, and if I use an HDMI splitter, my Blu Ray player will skip like crap, I wish my mom would've bought me a TV with more HDMI ports(at least 3 or 4)
