    I liked blu-ray but the first time I experienced a 4K UHD HDR physical disk on my very first 4K Sony television using a Panasonic 4K disc player (The greatest showman) I literally fell in love with movies again. It reminded me of the Picture, sound and full immersion of going to the movie theater. After that all I wanted to do was watch all my favorites and new movies in 4K UHD HDR (Dolby vision) physical media is why I love movies.

      A good quality TV or blu ray player can upscale 1080p blu rays so they almost look as good as 4k blu rays....the only reason why you should buy your favorite movie or TV show again in 4K is probably the wide color gamut and HDR which makes the most difference for me personally...

    To the naysayers physical media is king and streaming is like watching satellite TV. Although 4k and Dolby Atmos are being streamed the physical copy of the movie is the only way to if you want quality and not quantity!
    So very glad to see people enjoying physical media!!

    4K is good but I only buy my favorite films in it. And what’s weird is they don’t have a lot of my favorite films on 4K like Dawn of the dead 1978 version. I been waiting for that for years. But 4K is good. Netflix can’t stream in 4K better than having the original disc. The internet can’t push that much technology yet. If you really want to experience 4K you have to get the disc.

      Most movies are an upgrade as most blu rays prior to 2014 are just a low bitrate and encode. A new blu ray can look “4K” if it’s a good high bitrate in a good compression format. HDR , Atmos, and large color space do bring out a lot. Price is high though.

    I choose to buy 4K Blu-ray discs over regular Blu-ray discs and streaming for quite a few reasons.
    #1- I only buy one to two movies every month so I'm not dumping hundreds and hundreds of dollars every month into the format. since my collection grows slowly buying the premium format is not overly expensive.
    #2- HDR, in my opinion, is the biggest improvement over standard Blu-ray.
    #3- although I don't have a Dolby Atmos setup, I know that one day if I do decide to get one, all of my discs will be able to support that format.
    #4- I only buy movies that I know I'm going to watch over and over again and mean something special to me. And because of that it means a lot to have it in the best format possible.

  • @superstew79

    I’m 41 years old and always been a keen fan of seeing films at their best (I even saw Star Wars ep 2&3 in digital on DLP projectors which was the future back then). I’ve grown up on vhs then moved to dvd then to Blu-ray and now 4k and 4k is the best way to watch films without question, it’s a cleaner more natural tighter image that Blu-ray just doesn’t offer. Add HDR to the mix and you seeing details and colours you never did. The best upgrade it offers is to older films made on traditional film, films you watched on vhs and dvd. The matrix which I’m going through at the moment is a massive night and day difference, beetle juice aswell is another example. 4k films 99% of the time are brand new scans of the original negative whereas blurays are mostly taken from a digital master so that’s another plus for 4k. If you a genuine film fan 4k is the best format to watch films without doubt

    • @PeteVanFleet
      @PeteVanFleet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Another 41-year-old here, and I'd echo these sentiments. It's definitely worth looking into reviews of 4k disks before you buy, as the difference from Blu-ray can vary quite a lot since, as Stew Pot said, understanding whether they did a new scan is important, especially for film. Digital is hit or miss since a lot of effects were captured at 2k so the benefits won't be there, but newer movies should have 4k+ digital for everything, which is great as well, just not as stark a difference from a 1080p digital downsample, compared to a lower res film scan that's been digitized. The HDR and newer audio options like Atmos, if you have the setup to support them, are big benefits as well. I wouldn't recommend buying a ton of 4k disks if I were just watching movies in my dorm room on a 55-inch screen or something, but on a 70+ inch screen, you start to see a big difference. Lastly, Netflix can't take away your favorite movie if you own the disk, and if the Internet goes down or sucks, you can still watch, worry free.

      @blaggzear3152 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      "4k films 99% of the time are brand new scans of the original negative" Really? What i read in lots of UHD Disc Reviews tells a different story - a lot of UHDs are just upscaled 2K Masters and just added HDR, Noise Reduction and Sharpening Filters to it. New 4K Rescans are not sadly still not the Standard for UHD Discs. Prove me wrong with some sources.

    • @superstew79
      @superstew79 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@blaggzear3152 they are 2k upscales cos the film was finished off at 2k, these are usually cgi heavy films as rendering the cgi at 4k is just silly and way too much compute time. Films made on traditional film are most of the time taken from their original source like beetle juice and LOTRS for example. DNR is usually a nasty byproduct of the studio using the 3D master cos DNR is used to remove grain as it causes all sorts of issues with layers in 3D conversions, terminator 2 is perfect example.

    • @vangmx
      @vangmx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m 38 years old and agree with you 99%. However to say that 99% of 4K films were scan in 4K from the original camera negatives is probably pushing it. Films from early 2000 were already switching to digital intermediates for their masters and many of those only exist in 2k. Even the CGI effects were rendered in 2k. What many 4K Blu-rays doing is simply upscaling the 2k DI masters into 4K, adding HDR and voila. Do they look good? Sure. Could they look better? Absolutely! To go back and rescan all the camera negatives at 4K, edit the footage, redo all the color corrections and completely re-render all cgi effects in 4K would cost so much money and time. Another alternate method is scan the internegative print in 4K but still even that is generation or two away from the original camera negatives.

    Some newer blu-ray disks even have Atmos and DTS:X on it. The only thing I think I am missing out on is the HDR.
    My optoma UHD51 only supports HDR10, and I have it disabled, since I dont think it adds anything good to the picture... • @TriMuXx
    @TriMuXx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The issue with 4K at the moment is a lot of the "4K Ultra HD" discs out there are 2K upscales to 4K and are missing HDR. In 2015, it became mandatory for all BluRay movies that were going to be "4K Ultra HD" to ALSO include HDR while allowing HDR10+ and Dolby Vision to be optional. However, before this requirement, SEVERAL BluRay discs were released with the naming of "4K Ultra HD" and were not so impressive.
    There IS an online resource where you can see if the movie you own (or are about to buy) in 4K Ultra HD is ACTUALLY a 4K transfer or just a 2K upscale WITHOUT ANY HDR whatsoever. I believe this is why there are people out there claiming that 1080p HD BluRay movies are good enough and 4K Ultra HD movies are unnecessary, but if you show one of those people a 4K HDR, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision version of the 4K Ultra HD movie, they WILL convert. lol. HDR is AMAZING.

    Nice video comparison. I would like to bring something up though. Your comparison, as with everyone else I've found, compares the older version standard version blu-ray against the newer version 4k. Wouldn't it be better and more accurate to compare the newest mastered 4k against the newest mastered standard blu-ray?? A lot of movies come with both 4k and standard blu-ray, so that would be a better approach, I would think, then comparing a standard blu-ray from 10 years ago, with a 4 k from last year.. This way, you and others, could see what hdr and all of that truly does. G

    4K isn't a huge difference, but HDR IS the gimmick, (it's dull and drab imo) I never use it, details, meh, some are a little different, not much. Games on the other hand are the only real use for 4K, and you get the most from them, NOT movies. 4K is also good for Nature shows, Planet Earth etc. Other than that, 4K will never be the norm. Dolby Vision with no HDR gives dramatically better colors, and a better picture, even ones not in 4K (Netflix, Blu Ray discs etc). You'll see this in the future when TV's take FULL advantage of the 12 bit colors, as opposed to 10. Soon. 4K even in 2021 is still in it's infancy, and will remain so for 90% of the population who don't care about sharper hair, skin tone, etc. And just want to watch their movies, with a good picture.

    🇬🇧 Video comparison at 6 minutes.
    I would say the Blu-Ray picture noise is not film grain, more like digital noise due to very poor conversion resulting in a picture far below Blu-Ray capabilities. It's terrible.
    The 4k is much cleaner, but suspect this is mainly due to far superior mastering.
    Blu-Ray vs 4k?
    If you have the TV and eyesight to do it justice and the mastering is of best quality, 4k everytime.

    I remembered your video on collecting 4K Blu-rays from 2019 as I commented on it at the time. It played a large part in convincing me that I should start collecting 4K Blu-rays, as I had just bought a 4K TV and was unsure. Since then I have purchased over 30 4K titles, both old and new, and have also started replacing my standard Blu-rays. It’s a fantastic format, one that I believe is going to be supported for a long time to come.
    Having said that, I am subscribed to two streaming services namely Netflix and Disney+. These I mainly use for watching original content. There is no substitute in my mind for watching a film on physical media, especially 4K.
    The other aspect of streaming that concerns me is that the services can, seemingly on a whim, censor their content. Very recently of course there was a story concerning Netflix censoring the 2000 film Final Destination, for a literally 2-second hanging reference. While censorship is sometimes necessary to protect certain groups, it can be misused as in this case. This is just one example why physical media will always be superior to streaming.
    Finally, by happy coincidence I received the original Jurassic Park trilogy on 4K for Christmas. I’ve just checked out the original film, and the superior quality of the image in particular is immediately apparent!

Also keep in mind I can stream 4K through VUDU with just a 25 Mb Internet connection with bandwidth to spare. But when I watch the bit rate coming from a UHD player it’s 75 to 95 Mb. I'm so tired of the price-issue; yes, if you need the latest releases on the day they drop, you'll pay handsomely for that privilege, but if like me, you can wait a little, you can get some awesome deals which make price a non-issue. I got the whole Hunger Games Quadrilogy as single 4k-discs for round $10/each. For the last five 4k-discs I bought: Full Metal Jacket, Sicario, Parasite, Joker, and 1917 I payed roughly the same; round $10 per disc. As I write this, I'm looking at the Amazon prices of 1917: $11:99 for DVD, $9:99 for Bluray, and $13:99 for the 4k disc. I know there are many people in the US for whom two dollars make a huge difference, but I'm willing to bet they're not physical media collectors. A TWO dollar difference between DVD and 4k.. The ONLY times I've payed full price for films, have been when small companies have dropped something which I really wanted, and I've also wanted to support the companies efforts: The Deer Hunter comes to mind, which I pre-ordered from Shout; I think I payed $29:99. And I'm awaiting the arrival at my door of the Limited Release 4k-restoration from Arbelos Films of Sátántangó; that cost somewhere in the forties, when I ordered it. But for mainstream releases, I've NEVER payed over $20 and hardly ever more than $15. I also collect Criterion Collection Bluray's and mostly buy them straight from Criterion or from Barnes & Noble, when either have their bi-annual 50% off sales. When your old 1080p TV and/or player break, the price for a 4k-replacement will be almost exactly what you'd pay for 1080p, so can we PLEASE stop talking money?! PS: great video; I'm hereby following!!

      30 dollars for a movie is gouging. It is what it is. They have no reason to do it, other than that some suckers will fall for it. But yes eventually the price will go down. Which is good because these studios hardly deserve the money, I don't care what movie you're talking about. If you think the actual creators of these movies see more than maybe a fraction of that money then you don't know how the industry works.

    Physical media is the best for as long as you have the player always available when the format will die and you will be stuck with your discs with nothing to play them with. 8 am old enough to know.

    Ever since I started editing videos in HD I've been craving bitrate to be improved online. Even HD is at 5mbps usually, so getting rid of physical media, 4K or even standard HD would hurt. It's all about that bitrate!!!!

    I’ll admit from the outset that I’m commenting without watching the full video, however...
    On the point of ‘is 4K better than Blu-Ray/1080p HD?’, I would have to say that if you’re watching on a decent home theatre/cinema system, with the appropriate amplification and speaker set up, I personally find the experience to be slightly better. I don’t think it’s as revolutionary as going from watching 480p SD (standard definition) to 1080p (high definition), or the step up from stereo sound to 5.1 surround sound.
    A decent OLED 4K television will upscale Blu-Ray sourced films anyway, and depending on how good the tv’s processing is, you would probably be happy to watch an upscaled Blu-Ray with a decent HD audio sound (like Dolby Digital + or DTS HD Master Audio).
    As a collector of films, I have a load of Blu-Ray films, most of which I won’t buy again just to have the 4K version. I can only speak for myself, but I’m happy enough to watch a film in 1080p upscaled to 4K. A native 4K disc of course looks brilliant anyway and is a bonus, but no way revolutionary (imho).

    The one major thing I noticed is the Blu-rays are brighter then the 4K. But details in the 4K pop out more. Which I really noticed in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. But movies like Alien it's a Ying and Yang the detail is sharper but being a dark movie in the first place it's a lot darker on 4K then Blu-ray version. But they both looking stunning. So it's a hard call. Most movies I'll buy on Blu-ray if the come with the 4K cool. But my absolute favorite movies like the complete Star Wars saga episodes 1-6 and Alien and Braveheart I have to have them both. There is one shot on Attack of the Clones that really pop out to me, when Obi-Wan lands on the water planet, kamino, he's meets one of the aliens it's a full screen shot of her head on Blu-ray you can see all the skin pores and veins under the skin and it looks 100% photo-realistic but on the 4K, ever though it's darker, the skin tone in veins under the skin REALLY POP OUT!!! Making something that looks 100% photorealistic even more realistic. So I think it's really constant trade-off I would tell people to buy the absolute films on 4K and just other films on Blu-ray. Cuz they both do look amazing. I also noticed attack of the Clones again the geonosian Arena is the clone dropships a lifting up out of the Arena you can see the sun and it looks 100% better then the Sun on the Blu-ray Wichita looks incredible. It's much like the scene you showed us Jurassic Park with the flashlight. The exact same idea. But there are some shots in my opinion on 4K that are a little too dark that look better on Blu-ray but overall if it's your favorite movies 4K I think it's the way to go.

    4K Tv with a real HDR are very expensive and you need at least 700 nits. If you have an entry level or medium range 4K Tv, the new 4K BR discs are useless. There are many factors to check, like the TV diagonals dimension, THE DISTANCE you watching your movies and other stuff. Regular BR discs are enough to enjoy your movies. Stop thinking about the pixels and focus about THE MOVIE. You're like many videogames players thinking about videocards, effects and other stuff but not realizing they are playing a good or a bad game.
    For example, a 43 inch TV at 4K resolution is a waste of money, because at that diagonal dimension you can enjoy a 1080p BR discs like a 4K movie at a distance of 2,5 meters. It's only marketing, wake up.

    The improvement in the flashlight scene you showed had nothing to do with 4K, rather it was better tone mapping. That could be HDR, or just a better job of adjusting the gamma curve for this scene.

    yeah 4k *can* absolutely be noticeably better than bluray. Even when its not noticeable, the increased sharpness, quality, and color accuracy in faces alone create a more emotive response out of me even when its just subconscious differences. Even if you take away the extra sharpness, and the HDR, even if you are dealing with an upscale, the shear fact that the bitrate is much higher and codec more efficient means quality is better. I don't think I've noticed any banding or compression artefacts on any 4k disk - wheras such things can be regularly noticeable in dark scenes on bluray, or in dynamic noisy scenes like explosions that simply max out the smaller max bitrate on bluray. (same for streaming - yes those 4k streams do look amazing and more than good enough... until you hit an explosion and macro blocking is clearly noticeable). Its very minor on bluray (and good streams) but it is still there, where as on the UHD disks, the max bitrates north of 100mbit/s seems to be enough to completely eliminate this problem. Even standing a foot from my 77" tv it can be hard to notice the macroblocks.
    Which means you are getting practically a lossless image. when you add to that the 4k and the HDR at normal viewing distances, it is really hard to imagine getting much better - in short the technical limitations are negligible.
    And that's why I say *can* above, because if anything, eliminating technical limitations from the format, means the differences between different 4k releases are now more stark than ever before. You really are clearly seeing every technical and artistic choice taken in the original filming, mastering and any remastering for the release. For better or worse.
    And while its always famous last words, I think there is reason to believe 4k bluray will be more future proofed than previous formats, and will remain the pinnacle of home entertainment for quite some time - indeed *forever*, for most films that exist today. And ironically one of the key indicators of this is the fact the format is failing! There is clearly limited consumer demand for these 4k disks, let alone 8k or whatever would come next. There seems to be reasonable demand for it on the streaming services, shown by the fact that all of them are investing heavily in making all their new content 4k, dolby vision, dolby atmos etc. and in 2018, 30% of netflix subscribers were on the top tier, either to get more simultaneous streams, or more likely, to get UHD.
    But even if there was massive consumer demand for ever increasing quality, there is also the hard technical limit of the entire film industry production pipeline to consider: The fact is 4k has actually leapfrogged the literal film masters! Most films made this century are ultimately mastered at 2k. If they have any reasonable amount of CGI, they will almost certainly be mastered at 2k, because rendering the CGI any higher is impractical, even today. Consider Avengers Endgame, that movie had a budget of nearly half a f***ing BILLION dollars, and was still mastered in 2k. So how long do you think its going to be before these CGI fests (lets face it, usually the most impressive films that AV heads are in to) are rendered in 4k? let alone 8k? which is 16 times as many pixels!? Many films this century were also shot digitally at sub 4k, with plus 4k shooting only really becoming mainstream in the last couple of years. Then you have film: Overwhelmingly movies are shot on 35mm, and the rule of thumb seems to be that there's not much to be gained from scanning these at higher than 4k. IMAX, 60, 70mm film are regularly scanned at higher resolutions, but I can think of like two films off the top of my head that have been shot on that larger format (2001 and Lawrence of Arabia)
    In fact here's the list:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_70_mm_films
    And
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IMAX_films
    If you are thinking "should I buy this on UHD bluray? A better version will just come out in a few years again" Unless its on that list. No. No It wont. Not ever. (*if they did a good job of the release, which is what reviews are for).
    The most notable recent releases on that list are Nolan's latest, with Tenet and Dunkirk shot entirely on a mix of 65mm and imax 70mm.
    Also the Hateful Eight shot entirely on 70mm (ironically it doesn't even have a 4k release though). But it seems you can count on two hands the number of blockbusters released in the last 40 years shot entirely on large format.
    There are a few good films from the last decade shot partially on large format, but the difference in quality between the imax and 35mm scenes can be jarring enough on 4k bluray...
    And as for "well should I invest in a player at all" well.. from a "the technology being surpassed" point of view, again, if you like movies with cgi, it'll probably be well over a decade before you have 8k masters...as for films without cgi, it is reasonable to expect there could be 8k sources at least in a few years, though it'll be longer still before 8k is adopted into the editing pipeline and you end up with 8k masters. But it is practically possible for someone so inclined (like James Cameron) to go and produce an 8k shot and mastered blockbuster in the next couple of years if they really want.
    Obviously the more apt question is whether the 4k bluray format will die from lack of interest anyway.. There are certainly signs of that. Though I think its more likely that the format will simply become (even more) niche, and perhaps more expensive. But will continue to exist. Much like how vinyl is alive and well. Yes, streaming services will soon enough be able to match the quality of UHD bluray, but music streaming services can literally, objectively surpass the quality of vinyl, yet vinyl remains. Streaming will likely suffer headwinds in the near future too with its primary issue of fragmentation and saturation coming to a head. bluray might not have the sex appeal of vinyl but there is still much to be said for holding a physical copy of a film that you love, that no one can take away from you. that you can always find when you want it.

    What I want to know is, why is it that every single time there's a comparison between bluray and 4k movies, it's compared on a 4k tv? There's no way the bluray would look better on a 4k tv! It's obvious that the bluray format was designed for hd and fhd tv's. So please lets be reasonable and have a fair comparison. That's like me playing a DVD movie on 1080p tv and then saying how superior blu-ray look next to the DVD, I mean c'mon really!
