    Update: I've gotten a lot of comments and now I know it's not normal for a loctician to not make sure the rest of your hair is good outside of reties! Y'all I've been bamboozled by these people and I want to fight 😭 since posting this video, I've experienced 2 more locticians and I'm ready to write a book called "Surviving loctician trauma" 😭

    Your loctition was wrong. Who ever told you that stupid story is also wrong. If you have to ask someone to do what they are trained to do, RUN. Evaluation of the hair that you are doing is something that should be automatic.

    • @astoldbymeso
      @astoldbymeso  ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That's what I assumed too!!! But the fact that the first loctitian didn't do that for me, and the second one told me it's an add-on charge. At this point, I don't know what's normal or not. Where I live, I unfortunately can't be choosy except I'm willing to drive 6-7 hours roundtrip to find another loctitian who may just do the same thing 🙃

      This was my experience, and I agree w/you. I felt like I was not being taught how to care for my investment, all along, and, at each stage. I was always having to ask when issues arose. The majority of what I learned, was from my own research! That did NOT seem like a sustainable relationship going forward, for me. Because she NEVER braided & banded my hair when she washed it, yet, I DID, when I washed my hair myself, I blame her for so much bunching! I asked her why she never braided & banded, and she ACTUALLY told me that, that was only for those w/ sisterlocs!!!Needless to say, I parted ways w/that loctician.

I'm ready to get my microlocs started like YESTERDAY...Im hesitant because many of the locticians Ive reached out to jus seem impatient, jaded, overbooked...generally not welcoming...almost as if youre asking a superstar for a favor just by inquiring about their services...such a turn off!

    I started with braid locs twist locs didn't go well with my hair. I had to comb out my first set which was the twist locs now I've been loced for two years and I'm so in love but my advice to everyone is to start with braid locs. The two-strand twist is a no-no. It's too much work and too many problems.

    • @astoldbymeso
      @astoldbymeso  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Braid locs are definitely the best way to go if you're not interlocking from the start but they take so much longer to install and most people don't want to sit that long. Glad you're enjoying the ones you have now!

      I disagree. I started mine (my sons and daughters too)with 2 strands, never braided and banded and they never unraveled. I think it's just different for each person. Also, my hair is not dense to start and braidlocs give you the most compact look because the hairs can't expand within the loc and the braid pattern can take a long time to go away, if ever for some. Different strokes for different folks🤷🏾‍♀️

    She should have given you a consultation before she gave you service. Good locticians do that and notify you of any problems with your locs regardless of whether they started them or not. Apparently, she wasn’t professionally schooled. However, as a consumer, we are supposed to research ourselves, just like you know to do now. Btw, most oils can cause dryness and itchiness if you are using them. Tips: wash you hair frequently to help loc hair faster and don’t spray your hair with liquids every day. Fortunately, you have learned valuable lessons and other loc-ers can view your channel for information. Subscribed!✌🏽

      Hey! Thanks for this. Quick one, I workout 4 times a week, Is it ok to run water through my hair for the 3 days after each workout and on the 4th day have an actual wash?

    • @blu_rey8656
      @blu_rey8656 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tishabhazi6247 I guess it won’t hurt, as long as you actually wash it as you said. Thoroughly rinsing is better than just spraying water. However, remember to band your locs even with just a rinse. Also, it is natural for locs to go through the ‘budding’ process. That’s when the hair puffs up within the loc. Eventually, everything most locs will even out. Nevertheless, you can minimize any distortions in your locs by following starter loc protocol for at least a year and not neglecting them but not doing too much manipulation.🤞🏽

    • @astoldbymeso
      @astoldbymeso  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You're right! The first time I sat in her chair, she told me my locs looked really good for something I installed myself. The issues started as my hair matured. If I can be completely honest, I was just happy to have someone else take care of myself who had a shop (not their home) and provided structure for my hair. This is what happens when the pickings are slim in the area you live in. Also, my hair was always in water and I sprayed everyday, and that's why it locked so fast. I've learned my lesson but I'm still terrified something will go wrong with these new ones.
      Thanks for subscribing! ♥️

    • @astoldbymeso
      @astoldbymeso  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @tishabhazi6247 Just adding my own two cents, I don't think washing hair frequently is a problem, it's what you do when you wash it . If you do nothing else, please braid and band, a lot of problems can be avoided by just doing that.

    I’m at 2.5yrs as of today…I definitely experienced bunching, most likely due to not braiding/banding consistently. The bunching was towards the end of my loc, so at around month 15, I cut below the thick part of the bunching…it just annoyed me how it was “skinny, thick, skinny.” I ended up cutting ab 3-4 inches off the majority of my locs.

    • @astoldbymeso

      Braiding and banding is taking sections of your locs and literally braiding it (think of box braids but larger sections) and folding the ends with rubber bands, hair ties etc. The point is to keep your locs from slipping and unraveling - which is the most frustrating thing about starter locs. There's tons of videos on TH-cam about it.

    I had microlocs for about 2.5 years….i just combined my micros back to traditional locs.
    Backstory:
    I had traditional locs for about 15 years prior. My hair grew to about 17-18”. I had length and no volume. I felt that I wanted volume so I cut and got micros.
    I won’t go into the details but the short story is that the financial investment versus the changing behavior of the loctition was not worth it to me anymore.
    I gave it up I’m back to traditional locs. I’m loving my babies!!!! I feel better. I’m 4c then banded the bottom with a rubber band until the merge together maybe after my next wash.
    I thought about reattaching but I spoke with another loctition and she gave her reasons of why she didn’t really care to do it. I agreed.
    Your video is great!
    Advice I would give is like you mentioned…. Keep your hand out or your head!!!!!!
    I’m sooooooooo guilty!

    The assumption about the loctitian caring for the loc is so true. I was going to mine for reties and several months later I noticed a very thin based loc. I wonder why she would not bring this up or address it for something that will need close monitoring. Soon enough I just stopped going to her for my reties because it wasn't worth it. I started my own reties which was time consuming but at least I was able to monitor my strands better and catch things. That loctitian lady was just retying and giving no other services.

    • @astoldbymeso

      I really think this is coming from people who are not formally trained. Like people who maybe took a quick loc course or learned on TH-cam and started doing it as a business. Based on some other comments, people who are properly trained care for the whole hair and not just the new growth during reties. It's unfortunate

    The only great loctician is myself, no loctician has ever satisfied me, they just retit shabily to quickly finish up n grab next client, and true that they don’t care about your hair when they didn’t start it, so needless paying them so much if I won’t even get a great job or a feedback.. Less than two months in and I’ve already made 5 of these mistakes 😫😤😱. This video has been really helpful as I now know where I’m going wrong. The loctician I used suggested the two strand twist method for me because I was not 💯 confident that I’ll like my hair in locks as I have feathery 4C hair with low density but high porosity, yeah crazy combo. She initially did gel twists not locked, and I was meant to wear it for 4-6weeks before finally locking, however they started to unravel very quickly and I went back to lock it less than two weeks after. Again this only lasted just under three weeks before some had started to unravel and some strands were breaking off at the tips (due to dryness, she told me not to wash or put any products so my hair was really dry, not sure if this was good advice) and some were thinning out unevenly along the strands. Now I’m going to a different loctician to see how my new locks can be salvaged without combing out and starting all over again 😫

    • @astoldbymeso
      @astoldbymeso  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm surprised that they were breaking off after actually locking it. Did you interlock the second time around? Or you just put in twists like the first time? The good thing is you're still just a few weeks in so if you hate it, you could comb it out without losing a lot of hair.

    • @dumadan7561
      @dumadan7561 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@astoldbymeso Thanks for replying to my comment. Not sure why I’m just seeing it now even though you sent it a month ago. Yes she said she locked it the second time but honestly she did a shoddy job of it as my next loctician revealed. She did the locking properly making it my third attempt. It’s now been almost 6weeks since that third time and I’ll be going back for a retie next week. Can you please advise if I need to moisturise often because the dryness I’m experiencing is too much. I’m going to ask the new lady too but I’d like to know what you think. PS: I’ve always suffered with dry scalp even before getting locks so not moisturising frequently is taking its toll on my hair. Thanks 🙏🏾

    • @astoldbymeso
      @astoldbymeso  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also not sure why I'm just seeing this. Honestly, I would say to go with what your loctician says since she's the one maintaining your hair. Personally, I started moisturizing from the start, but only with water. As time passed, I introduced very light leave-in conditioner like once a week. I don't have issues with really dry scalp so I've been fine. I really feel like loc rules are not a one-size-fits-all and you may just need to listen to what your own hair/scalp needs.

    Literally same with me, my Loctician was doing reties ONLY . I didn’t have a healthy set of sister locks & didn’t even know until I moved states & went to get a consult before my next retie ….. I didn’t have time to comb mine out so I literally cut my locs off 🥴

      I'm so sorry this happened to you. Was the person an official sisterlock consultant?
