    Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
    Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
    The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
    The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
    The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
    Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
    On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

    I think the scene in Rogue wear there's a flashback to a moment with the doctor and Ruby's mum talking which never happened on screen just shows how rushed the season was. If in the flashback, the doctor was wearing the same outfit that he wore in Space Babies, this would help the audience understand when the scene took place.

    RTD's new era just doesn't have the emotional weight that his first era did. Rose, Martha, and Donna all had complicated and nuanced relationships with the Doctor, and the Doctor's trauma over the Time War gave the character more depth than ever before. In this new era, RTD has removed a lot of that depth in favor of making the show much more simple and happy, which I think is a shame. Plus, if he really wanted this to be a fresh start for new viewers, then I can't for the life of me understand why he decided to make the finale a sequel to a story from 1975, or to rely so heavily on referencing Susan.

      I think going for a happy doctor would have been a valid choice, and was what I expected given the set up in The Giggle. But what we got was a rehash of "tortured doctor" (always crying) but done in a more cursory way since we have had fewer episodes to establish and investment in the characters and stories.

    • @Creek932
      @Creek932 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@dogblessamerica The 15th Doctor doesn't really seem "tortured" to me. Sure he cries a lot but that doesn't really feel like it comes from a deep-rooted character arc or anything. I feel like his personality is far too one-dimensionally happy and nice most of the time, so the emotional bits don't really work for me. I actually wish he was given more angst and darkness, because without that the Doctor just isn't as interesting to me.

    Gosh, I pray RTD sees this video. You do a great job making your critiques and commentary fair and balanced, and trying to give credit where it's due, but also recognizing that us as the audience wants to feel that episode/season resolutions are more earned. 🙇‍♂🙇‍♂ Tharries for showrunner 🙇‍♂🙇‍♂
    EDIT: Small note on your Murray Gold comments, I agree he did a great job with the soundtrack, though I wish the 15th Doctor's theme was better used this season. I'm not saying we need to redo the whole Matt Smith-era playing their theme in every scene, but the 15th Doctor's theme is so energetic and majorly gives heroic "Doctor is saving the day" vibes, but imo we don't really get scenes that measure up to the energy of the song (which is perhaps why the theme was so sparingly used anyways).

    I honestly think the real trick with Empire of Death, the thing that would’ve sold it for me, is him looking out at the devastation of the universe and not getting emotional AT ALL. He just goes numb. He cries every other story, so to show that when things really hit him, he can’t release, he can’t let it flow through him, it shows that his tears are a matter of growth. When the worst possible thing happens, he just shuts down. I think that would’ve hit like a wallop. It would’ve also been disconcerting for Ruby. Cos that scene is basically her and Mel comforting him. But she’s in this situation too. This should be mortifying for her. It just could’ve felt more real than it did.

    I loved this series overall. Ncuti is amazing as The Doctor, and the chemistry between him and Millie has been great. The scripts were mostly very good to excellent, with the possible exception of Space Babies (which I nonetheless enjoyed somewhat). My problems have been mainly with The Doctor crying TOO much, the truly absurd romance with Rogue, and the almost unforgivable letdown with the reveal of Ruby's mother. Oh yeah, and the dreadful owl designs for the aliens in Rogue. But other than those things I was quite pleased with this series. Looking forward to the Christmas special and series 2 next year.

    I’m hoping next season will be a lot better. They won’t have to worry with Ncuti’s shooting conflicts with another show. What they really need is to have more interaction between the Doctor and Ruby. The Doctor says Ruby is his best friend but we really don’t see that they’re best friends. I agree with you 100% about the crying. I’ve said the very same thing! I also immediately saw the Doctor in Ncuti. I remember when Christopher Eccleston left I was so sad because I loved him as the Doctor. Then David came along and I immediately saw the Doctor in him. It took me a couple of episodes to grow on Matt Smith but then I really did. I already really loved Peter Capaldi and knew he was a Doctor Who fan since he was a kid so I really loved him. I already really liked Jodie Whitaker too from Broadchurch and I was excited to see her as the Doctor. Unfortunately the writing just let her down.

    On the ‘sacrifice’ point: part of defeating Sutekh was uncovering Ruby’s mum’s identity, and getting that closure and getting contact with her biological mum ultimately makes her stop travelling full-time. That is a ‘consequence’ of beating the big bad, surely? I think it definitely didn’t carry as much weight due to episode count etc etc, but that consequence is there at least imo
    R.E a lack of humanity reacting to events: S2 filming pics of protests outside UNIT. I think that’s coming next year
    Completely agree on a lack of conflict between the Doctor and Ruby, and lack of ‘domestic’ moments, although would also say they are there in some places just not how are used to e.g. end of Rogue
    Also little headcanon about not sitting down and digesting 73 yards timeline at the end: the forced loop is a defence mechanism for keeping the circle closed. If the person who lived out the loop fully remembered it it’d draw too much attention to the circle and risk it being broken again. By forgetting the timeline happened the circle stays in tact and unnoticed

    I agree with your analysis in general here. I feel like the episodes in the middle of the season are the strongest and the first and last are the weakest for me. I think RTD got somethings very right and some things very wrong. I do love the variety of episodes and telling some very new kind of stories. The word experimental comes up several times in your analysis and I agree that they wanted to really push the storytelling to new areas and for the most part they succeeded with that. For me the season is at its best in the individual episodes and at its weakest with the season long cohesion and story arc. A lot of the problems with this season are that RTD tried to do too much with a lot less time to do it in, and without his lead actor for a quarter of that. The length of episodes has been a problem for a long time. It didn’t get any better. These stories need to be 55 to 60 minutes. 45 minutes just always ends up feeling rushed with anything complex which Doctor Who should be. RTD has to do better with developing the relationships even though the chemistry and actors are all good. RTD also really needs to plot out the season much better. Personally I think he should only be writing like 3 or 4 episodes not 7 of 9. The quality of his writing would go up if he was focused on fewer, and that would free him up to think more about how to structure the season. He could add to and edit a little of the other writers episodes to give the whole season more cohesion as well. Place a scene or two here or there that develop the relationships and explain things more satisfyingly. I do agree that this season was a big upgrade on the previous era. I’m hoping he can at least improve on an opener for season 2 (S15). I didn’t hate Space Babies but it is pretty lackluster as an opener. Also, the snow and cloaked figure and finger pointing are completely ridiculous and not believable within his story. The season looked amazing. Great cinematography, direction and FX work.

    I did enjoy the aspect of Lindy, that she was filled with self-loathing that was the root of her insecurities and vile behaviour. A seed of something that might make you pity her, if you can't empathise with her... She didn't see herself as a bad person, or hateful. But she lacked that empathy for anyone else, barely interested in those within her bubble, and not caring for those beyond it. She knew she should thank the Doctor for saving her life. Even if it was grudging, and the entitled expectation that it was his duty, and not his humanity that motivated him to save her.

    Great review! I very much enjoyed the series on the whole, but, like many, was let down by the finale. Perhaps the problem is that so many of the fan theories are so good that the actual resolutions are a let down in comparison.
    Going forward I would like Russell to follow more closely the template of his initial run and less of the silly Disney nonsense like the singing and dancing in episode 2 (fun though it was). Also, please - less of the tears, and much less of the woke. I'm in no way anti woke incidentally, but a great people utterly loathe having it foisted on them at every opportunity, and there is a great risk that people will abandon the show as a result. P.s (and as an example ) Davros! What on God's earth were you thinking Russell? And frankly, how very arrogant of you.

    For me, the Doctor as a character has seemed "off" since Chibnall's run. Gone is the verbose, quick-witted, brave hero, and in their place is a misty-eyed, "I'm so quirky" bore who runs away at the first sign of trouble. More often than not, coincidences save the day, not the Doctor. It's also super unfortunate that this weakening of the character coincided with the first female incarnation, and I'm sad that it seems to be continuing with Ncuti. Both Jodie and Ncuti are actors that I like in other things, so I'm fairly confident putting the blame on the writing. Ironically, since it was written by new writers to the show, Rogue felt more like Doctor Who than any of RTD's episodes this season - which I think is down to the pace of the dialogue, and the speed of thought displayed in Ncuti's performance. It's a shame that speed of thought doesn't carry through to other episodes, where he seems more akin to a Cbeebies presenter than an alien genius (this same complaint could also be levelled at Jodie's Doctor).

    RTD built us all up a frenzy , only to drop us flat..... They are already hyping up the Xmas , and series two... But i for one will just keep away from it all...
    The acting is very good. Pity its let down by poor writing, and planning.... Need more writer's involved, and better control of the episode directors....
    RTD wrote s rubbish overall story, and did not control the directors.
    I will keep watching for the good acting. Its too late for series two. That's in the can.... I can only hope for series's three onward.
    Been watching DW since the 1970s...
    Did not watch any of the last incarnation , The plank could not act.... The story's were too woke....
    Ncuti Gatwa acting is superb. Just hope he is given better writing and stories

    For some reason i am reminded of Tharries once saying that Karl Urban should be the 14th doctor... because MARTIN FREEMAN was TOO FAMOUS🤣😂🤣. (Karl was only in Lord of the rings, star trek, Thor Ranarok and the boys. so basically an unkonwn). Doctor who is not" good again". Its 2005 RTD tropes thrown into a kitchen sink and then flung at the wall. There were zero good episodes/ Devils chord in particular was terrible. and the worst finale since journeys end. The show wont get better if you keep being RTD's simp, tharries

    Is that much better tho? I've been rewatching 13s run and for all its many flaws, I feel that those episodes were more fleshed out, more grounded (and btw filmed beautifully). This RTD 2.0 run feels unfinished and a bit amateurish. No imagination in the direction and cinemaphotography and above all, for the tears and melodrama....so soul. Not saying that Chibs wasnt a disaster but havent seen enough of Ncuti to say he's better than Jodie and the writing has been somewhat a tie. (was anything this season as thrilling as fugitive of the Judoon?) Am I crazy thinking that Power of The Doctor was actually a great finale and that the three specials were more satisfying than all of "Season One"?

    • @lewgallagher463
      @lewgallagher463 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I mean, I’ll agree what the 13th era looks nice, like 13’s regeneration (and then we got David Tennant floating in space.. seriously, what was that?) but yeah - it is better. Most of the characters, however poorly defined in some cases of RTD2, actually feel more real with less wooden dialogue and blocking - seriously, the Chibnall era’s dialogue is Prequel Trilogy level bad at times. It feels more grounded. The smaller main cast doesn’t feel bogged down by dead weight in having 4 main characters plus any side characters. The political commentary is one thing better written into RTD that I’d argue is fairly well handled. I.e. throwing the matter to the nazis unironically weaponising his race or staring down the barrel lecturing the audience about recycling compared to people in Finetime actually being pretty crappy people etc. 13 simps for a major space corporation, compared to 15 channeling 12’s grievances with capitalism in life or death situations.
      I really can’t call ‘fugitive of the judoon’ thrilling - maybe the first time you watch, but it falls apart soon after when you click that it’s just dangling fan service keys in front of you going ‘ooh, we’ll do something interesting later’ - and given what it was setting up is generally disliked.. that such a radical change was also never explored from a character standpoint - RTD picked this up; never mind the (ironically) shameful pulling from RTD1 I.e. Judoon and ‘platoon upon/by/..’, the fob watch, captain Jack - god forbid you jumped on the series prior.
      Power of the Doctor in also not mad on - again, I think it genuinely gets a lot of praise because of the nostalgia moments; but because it’s been hard to root for 13 and Yaz etc given they’ve had a lack of characterisation, and their relationship is messy (seriously, aside from the fact that thasmin came out of nowhere, 13 seems like she doesn’t want Yaz around half the time, and I’ve no idea why Yaz then ends up falling for her). It’s as good a finale as you’ll get for an era that’s pretty empty and hollow on the whole - so it doesn’t elicit much of a reaction because what led to it was either mid or just flat out bad.
      I do think the 60th specials were more consistently better than S14, some slight issues aside. What I can appreciate is that season 1/Series 14 is at least trying different things in most of its stories, even if they don’t work. Now, if we compared this series more to Series 11 - I think that’s a more apt and fair comparison to make; and whilst I vastly prefer a lot of RTD2’s stuff, I’d even be inclined to to suggest Series 11 might have been more successful in the idea of a soft reboot - and dare I say, it’s the best chibnall series. I think S12 got really messy and bogged down into fan service, lore heavy into dumping that honestly played like fan fiction. Not to say series 11 doesn’t have its issues, but they were nothing compared to what would come later for the era.
      Sorry for the novel.. lol

      @SnowLily06 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Fugitive and Power of the doctor were the two best episodes of 3 entire seasons so that's not really a fair comparison. This is my personal opinion but I did enjoy quite a few episodes of RTD2 more than them. Power of the doctor is still pretty high up on the list but without the episode being a pesudo 60th anniversary by bringing in all the nostalgia bait characters they could it was still a pretty badly written episode. This series is by no means perfect but so far I'm enjoying it a lot more than Chibnall's era and I assume that will continue considering the Christmas special is written by Moffat
