Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

Something I’d like to see is this new Doctor getting a darn hold of himself. Him crying in almost every episode of S14 got really exhausting and kinda contradicts how he was introduced as a Doctor free of 14’s baggage.

I wonder if that’s intentional. We watch doctors grow with arcs and that is (or at least should be) an essential aspect of the doctor. It would honestly be cool if 15 goes from an emotionally venerable place to a more mature, self controlled type of person. I think storytelling-wise that would really shake things up.

What I think they should do:
    - More new writers
    - A return of either the Daleks OR the Cybermen (preferably Daleks)
    - Entirely standalone episodes. I'm sick of arcs and serialisation will NOT be good for Doctor Who. It's actually one of the few things series 11 did right
    - A brand new villain for the finale. It will be refreshing to find out that Mrs Flood is a brand new god (maybe Incensor, the god of disaster?)
    - A companion-lite story. We've had two Doctor-lite stories this year. Let's have a companion-lite one like Midnight or Heaven Sent to really show off Ncuti Gatwa's talents.

Please please please new writers. They don't need to be new new - the Big Finish and NA writers in series 1 worked so well. I know both RTD and Moffat moved away from them because they needed so much management - but they are a great resource for ideas. Unlike what RTD claims the pitch counts for so so much.

Your first point is the key one I think. More episodes is really a necessity if they want to get experimental with the formats and I understand why they did this with S1, but for me the bread-and-butter DW episodes are the ones I go back to and rewatch the most. It’s why I enjoy Space Babies so much, and why Rogue is already my most watched episode of the season.
For example, Human Nature and Blink are both experimental to an extent and are both undeniably brilliant. But I so rarely rewatch them (I usually watch DW before bed as comfort food) and would usually opt for something like The Shakespeare Code or Gridlock. Series 10 was the master of consistently good bread-and-butter DW stories, with the exception of the Monk trilogy (that even feels like three separate stories) and finale.

Tying into the “more traditional stories” idea, I think something else Season 2 needs is better/stronger villains.
I *love* Maestro, but with that exception, there’s *no* decent villains or monsters this season. Sutekh was horribly underutilized, the Goblins were non-characters, the Chuldur sucked, and while I can *appreciate* the other stories being collectively sans-antagonist, but whether they’re new or returning, we need memorable and distinct adversaries in this show.

If I was in charge of Doctor Who for future seasons. 1) I would combine the U.S. writers room and the traditional UK autonomous individual writers approach. I would bring in 4 or 5 writers and have a couple weeks of combined discussion on our stories and how best to plot out the season probably without an arc, but at least with a theme and proper character development from episode to episode. Gathering ideas from the other writers to improve and tighten all of our stories. 2) I would get 10 episodes for the price of 8 by doing two 2-parters without adding additional FX (emphasizing drama and storytelling elements that fully flesh out the stories) and 1 very self contained episode in a single practical location and the TARDIS set. 3) I would build conflicts and drama amongst the main characters (Doctor, companions, UNIT) that get resolved by seasons end. 4) I would focus on more world (Universe) building. 5) I would focus most stories on new aliens/monsters, but I would include at least one returning fan favorite every season as well as returning concepts, characters & companions 6) I would emphasis the intelligence of the Doctor and his problem solving a lot more. More science and less magic even if we dip into fantasy 7) There would be more stories in space and on alien worlds, different parts of the UK and at least once every two seasons in different parts of the world and more variety of periods in history. 8) I would put together a show bible for writers that is as consistent, concise and forward thinking as it can be given 60+ years of writing in all media.

I suspect a side-show runner might step into Russell's shoes, when he eventually moves on. I'm curious to see what lessons have been learnt from the first season. What are deliberate threads to continue into the next series. I believe Torchwood is dead, though UNIT will probably feature in a spin-off in some capacity.
I can't think of any characters who could support their own show, like SJA, or Class. Maybe we'll get more development with Susan, it would feel too random to drop in a reference with no pay off after decades of forgetting her.
I'm guessing the Battle Between the Land and the Sea, will be a Sea Devil/Silurian story, and hope it will have some sort of actual resolution, rather than fall back into a frustrating stalemate.
    _Nu-Universe, who dis?_
Does open up the familiar characters to have a significant redesign, though I'm not sure how some of the classic, or Nu-Who creatures will fit in with Gods that can turn all life into dust, or control all music, or alter reality like the Toymaker. We all saw how powerless the Mysterious Mrs. Flood is in the face of a villain like Sutekh, _She had such plans._
They all feel a little OP, and run the risk of falling to Russell's Deus Ex Machina conclusions...
If anything, I'd like more experimental stories, rather than traditional base under siege ones, or a retreat to the familiar. For me, God Complex, Listen, and Turn Left and so many others are what keeps the show fascinating.
Anyway, Far better than under Chris Chibnall, but I still have concerns.

can this doctor find his outfit? i really liked how each doctor had their own flare! this doctor is a good actor but just not feeling doctor energy. I think its because he hasn't found a outfit yet.

    • @idle_speculation
      @idle_speculation หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think finding a single outfit is less important than finding a style. 3, 4, and 12, for example, never had one "uniform", but they all had a general, easily recognizable silhouette and style (ostentatious man of action in a velvet jacket, cape, and frilled shirt; fedora-wearing bohemian wrapped in a scarf; and half-magician, half-aging rockstar always wearing a dark coat with a red or blue lining, respectively).

I understand why they filmed them like they did but as you say the trouble with filming so far in advance means they can't listen to the audience and 'improve'. If the audience think it's just gonna be the same again some may choose not to bother watching. We def. need at least 10 if not 12 episodes plus the specials. Given the series is aiming at a younger demographic I think more historical stories would be good to both teach and entertain people as it was originally intended.
Here's an idea, the Doctor visits the 1980's . Not that far off in time but eons away in terms of tech. it could help younger people connect with their parents or grandparents.

I think the biggest problem is that it no longer matters what the viewers think anymore. All that matters is how profitable the show will be for the BBC. Back in 2005, bringing back doctor who was a risk, and in order to see if it would pay off, they had to listen to feedback. Now the production team seems so overconfident, Russell had already written two whole seasons before we’d even seen ncuti on screen, proving that it doesn’t matter what we think.

In my opinion, I think there was sometimes too much reliance on lore (especially with last two), that yes... long time Doctor Who fans love, but was there too much for the new viewer? It is all about getting those new eyeballs on the screen and having them stick around that will guarantee a future for the show. I guess I was expecting more like The Devil's Cord (which was my favorite) and less about things that ultimately were alien in origin. I agree with you about the Doctor Companion relationship.... that was short shifted in season 1 (series 14), and these episodes need a few minutes more to have those scenes.
All that said, I did enjoy the season, and I didn't come away disliking any the the episodes.

Your first point is the key, we need more "traditional" stories, which I interpret as stories for the majority of the audience, not those aimed at a niche of those or stories writtem to massage the writers world view. A start would be to stop writing overt political messaging in the show, it was always there but was was far more subtle and get back to storytelling being the main driver of content

  • @tmage23

I would like to see 90 minute episodes. I think the plots are too overstuffed (and this is not a recent issue but has been present since the revival) resulting in awkward pacing and rushed, illogical resolutions. With an additional half hour, they'd have enough time to include the bits that tie everything together more completely and provide a satisfying ending to the episodes.

Don't make another series. Not until they return to entertaining stories and stop pushing agendas. It hasn't been done properly since the end of Capaldi and even then it was heading downhill. They have taken all that was good about the show and thrown it under the bus called "THE MESSAGE". There's no substance to the show. The Doctor want's to be a clown judging by his acting, Disney have taken over with the help of RTD whose agenda matches that of Disney. Major franchises have been destroyed in the name diversity. Diversity isn't a bad thing done properly but it shouldn't be at the expense of characterisation and story. Until they realise this it won't return to anything like it's glory days.
