The taliban did the same thing back in the 90s. They enforced harsh consequences against growing poppies for opium and under their rule opium production went to 0%. They completely eliminated it. But they did not get the credit they deserved because of their religious views and because they wanted to rebuild Afghanistan on their own terms aligned with their social views and cultural context rather than on western ideas that clashed with their culture. They were also supported by most of the common people in Afghanistan who just wanted stability. Remember the Taliban are not Al-Qaeda (Bin Laden's group) but they got entangled with Al-Qaeda when bin Laden fled to Afghanistan.

I've never seen so many mistakes in one comment. The war on drugs was a domestic US issue in the 80s. America invaded Afghanistan as part of the war on terror, not on drugs. The opium trade provides livelihood to a great number of afghans who have no alternative, so it was considered best to not upset that particular apple cart as it would have made the Americans even more unpopular. The Taliban weren't always against growing poppies, they actually used to encourage it when they first came into power in the mid-90s because it was a source of income for the nation, despite the obvious contradiction with Islamic law

The fact that the farmers are loosing profit from producing regular crops is not a negative, Even though individually they fear not being able to afford food, the overall impact when they all switch back to producing actual food is that local food production increases drastically and food prices will therefore become more affordable. Its a tough decision in the short term but in the long term it will help reduce Afghanistan's food insecurity.
Also oxycodone, hydrocodone and morphine are derived from the opium plant. The majority of pharmaceutical opium is actually grown in Tasmania. The farmer who grows the most receives a brand new Mercedes. I kid you not

We grow a lot of poppy seeds here in Czechia, but its completely legal and all of it is used for traditional food and pastry. Seeing that poppy seeds are still farmed for opium really suprised me
I spent more than three and half years working in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2008. One project I worked on was in Nangahar called CRAWLS in 2001. It was funded by US INL, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. Our job was to offer villagers options to growing poppy which included schools, irrigation systems, clinics, roads and the like. I used to say to the villagers, If I give you an irrigation system, you can't use it to grow poppy in some vague hope they might comply. They didn't of course. It is interesting however, for all that is wrong with the Talibs, they are effective in eliminating the opium production and the west should do whatever it can to support that. One US option that floated around at the time was dropping agent orange up a couple of valleys. The Talibs need proper whipper snippers or tractors with mowers to complete the job on the opium and also the hashish that they grow in rotation..
The last time the taliban destroyed the opium plants we sent in our military. Guess the taliban hasn't learned their lesson and unfortunately we'll probably be back in there.

So many years ago when the US invaded the country, I saw some people make the observation that even though we're supposed to be in this "war on drugs", we didn't bomb a single poppy field. This was because we didn't want to anger the opium warlords of the country. The fact that the Taliban is taking this on really surprises me. I've never seen so many mistakes in one comment. The war on drugs was a domestic US issue in the 80s. America invaded Afghanistan as part of the war on terror, not on drugs. The opium trade provides livelihood to a great number of afghans who have no alternative, so it was considered best to not upset that particular apple cart as it would have made the Americans even more unpopular. The Taliban weren't always against growing poppies, they actually used to encourage it when they first came into power in the mid-90s because it was a source of income for the nation, despite the obvious contradiction with Islamic law
Oh no Helen, we did at the begining we went after the Poppy fields but the farmers would just move. Same thing will happen here you will see. A lot of villages in Afghanistan need the money badly.
Probably they go to individuals fields the ones that didn’t make a connections , talibans probably by now have half of the country growing for them how do u think they will survive.
The fact that the farmers are loosing profit from producing regular crops is not a negative, Even though individually they fear not being able to afford food, the overall impact when they all switch back to producing actual food is that local food production increases drastically and food prices will therefore become more affordable. Its a tough decision in the short term but in the long term it will help reduce Afghanistan's food insecurity.

We grow a lot of poppy seeds here in Czechia, but its completely legal and all of it is used for traditional food and pastry. Seeing that poppy seeds are still farmed for opium really suprised me

I spent more than three and half years working in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2008. One project I worked on was in Nangahar called CRAWLS in 2001. It was funded by US INL, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. Our job was to offer villagers options to growing poppy which included schools, irrigation systems, clinics, roads and the like. I used to say to the villagers, If I give you an irrigation system, you can't use it to grow poppy in some vague hope they might comply. They didn't of course. It is interesting however, for all that is wrong with the Talibs, they are effective in eliminating the opium production and the west should do whatever it can to support that. One US option that floated around at the time was dropping agent orange up a couple of valleys. The Talibs need proper whipper snippers or tractors with mowers to complete the job on the opium and also the hashish that they grow in rotation..

The Taliban should be trying to get mining started with Chinese investment. The country needs some agriculture but it isn’t realistic to think they can feed themselves. The soil is poor, the region is cold and dry, and there isn’t enough water.
