    Sounds like they didn't want to fight and so they didn't. Instead they took the opportunity to run.
    Taliban lives in mountain caves and uses shotout AKs and RPGs from the 70s but still fight. ANA has modern equipment and firepower, drops it all and jumps on the first flight out.

      I completely agree and it's crazy that other people cannot see this. All I see is young, healthy men running away who could easily take up arms and fight for their country. And the ANA. What a joke, they couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. Half of them can't even put a helmet on facing the right way. Maybe they are tired because all they do is smoke hashish and opium and sleep under trees all day. Under supplied my ass! They have top tier state of the art U.S combat equipment. It's absolutely a lack of will!

      @@MrZZooh Right? Even in World War 2, when France surrendered to the Germans, the British opened fire on French ships so that they couldn't end up in German hands. The French ships were told to sail to a neutral port, to be scuttled or to join the British fleet in order to not let these ships join the German navy. When the French refused, the British sunk the ships.
      I know this isn't exactly the same thing, but the principle is much the same. When they thought the Afghan army would be able to fight off the Taliban, then taking those weapons away would feel like it opened the attack of: "You expected them to fight the Taliban but left them with no weapons?" however without a victory against the Taliban, the problem you're left with is: "You left all these weapons intact for the Taliban to take."

      @mwhawley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +139

      Yea that was so frustrating to hear at the beginning. Of course a large part of this failure was a lack of will; I mean, how could it not have been? We trained their army for 20 years, gave them tens of billions in equipment and on the ground support, and they still couldn’t last more than a couple weeks.
      I mean hell, that’s the definition of not having the will to fight.
      It’s also partly just due to the makeup of the country apparently. There’s been a lot of discussion this week about how there’s not really a sense of a cohesive national identity, but Afghanistan is rather a collection of tribes that people identify with on a small, localized scale. Thus, it’s exponentially more difficult to create a national army.
      But regardless, it’s an incredibly nuanced and difficult situation. All we can do now is wish for the best.

      It is an oversimplification because the taliban did not achieve a military victory they achieved a political one. They basically negotiated their way to power through local leaders

      @@scottostrowski5406 Right, the Afghan military surrendered to bribes and promises of safety instead of fighting. They were legitimately not willing to fight.
      Never said the situation wasn't oversimplified. My point is that just because it's oversimplified doesn't mean the Afghan military was willing to fight, when the majority of the military obviously wasn't.

      Yeah exactly. The guy's view on it is skewed by the fact he was posted with the ANA Commandos the whole time, those guys are the real troops who were properly motivated and professional, but they only made up a small minority of the overall army force in the country. His whole stance is misleading and ignores the wider issues faced by the ANA as a whole that lead to them just not wanting to fight.

      That was my takeaway as well. Seemed to me that the piece only disproved it's own starting premise.
      The piece described an elite force of a few hundred Commandos that was willing to fight but was not equipped and ultimately told to stand down by their leaders. Where was the rest of the supposedly several hundred thousand strong Afghan army?
      Nobody doubts that there were some with the will and the bravery to fight, but clearly there weren't enough of them. Nor did they have the proper support from their corrupt and incompetent leadership.
