Inside the fentanyl cartel: Mexico crime lords feeding US addiction

  • We gain rare access inside the world’s most dangerous crime cartels, making one of the world’s most deadly opioid drugs.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Fentanyl drug use was the biggest cause of death for Americans aged between 18 and 45 - more than gun crime, more than road accidents.
The synthetic opiate killed at least seventy thousand Americans in just one year.
Fentanyl is smuggled across the Mexican border by the Sinaloa drug cartel, and US authorities have charged dozens of its members with trafficking - including the three sons of its leader, El Chapo Guzman, who's now in a maximum security prison.
To grasp the dimensions of this deadly trade you need to confront the people behind it.
    We did just that.

@@Anthony-dy5cq unlike the economy, which is mostly made up numbers on a screen, the drug market consists of real material value and just real material overall. How would it ”collapse”? Are you going to delete all the drugs? The drug market will never go away because people have always wanted and will always want drugs, which is why we have to legalize it and regulate it so that we can actually decrease harm instead of just increasing the harm.

Would be great to see a documentary about how drugs are supplied to every town in the US by American organizations without being spotted by any law enforcement agency. The easiest way for politicians is to look abroad to hide their inhability to deal with the problem. The US has to stop blaming it on other countries and take care of the problem they created.

I will check later for how many people like your undoubted comment. You got that right. Truth will set you free. Everyone heard it "we send this and they send us weapons." It's a transaction, an exchange of goods, being the later more letal because you can say "no" to the drug but you can't say "no" to a bullet, so who is killig who?
The reporter got one thing wrong, he says more people have died during AMLO's term. That's not true. Calderón's was the deadliest because he declared war on cartels while the USA was supplying the cartels with more potent weapons than the ones the Mexican military is allowed to use. Now, who is responsible for the difficulty to battle cartels in Mexico? Besides it's nonsensical to deny or not admit (and just blame it all on Mexico) that there are clandestine drug labs in the USA when the business is right there

She od at Albertsons once, another time i was in bed at night and she overdosed as she came to lie down next to me. Something, idk what, call it sixth sense , instinct, divine intervention, w/e ..but something told me to lean up and check on her.. and then i narcan her. Ive saved around a dosen friends. "no one is forcing them to take it" ouch, that phrase was brutal. Certainly many people choose to consume drugs as recreation in USA but some of them don't really know what exactly they are consuming (it's not like they put the ingredients chart in the products) even so, the fact that is one's own choice to indulge in recreational substance still holds true and that's the reason this phrase was so on point and brutally honest

Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.

Cartels exist only because of the costumers and these costumers were there from before the fentanyl crisis. It’s time to start covering both sides.

As a Mexican, I can attest that the entirety of this film is true; however, in reality, it is even worse than portrayed. The altercations are not limited to just Culiacán (the so-called "Capital del Narco"), but rather, they occur in almost every single state. There is a lot happening every day-stories of murders, robberies, and various criminal activities are constantly being heard and read about. Previously, if you were not involved in the narco/crime scene, you might have been safe. However, at this point in time, almost everyone has experienced a negative encounter in Mexico, including my own family.
The government's negligence and involvement have brought us to the state we are in today. Unfortunately, there are not many who are brave enough to take action. Multiple journalists have been assassinated, and anyone who attempts to interfere with narco/government operations faces grave consequences.

Nah, the arguments from mexico are more profund than that. You need to understand : 1) There are cartels operating inside USA. How do you think drugs moves all over USA territory? If USA wants to fight a war against drugs, they can start there. 2) USA is selling weapons to mexican cartels. It's really hard to stop them becuase their firepower is as good as our army. 3) American Pharmaceuticals are behind this epidemic , they give the green light to sell this type of drugs to the people to treat pain, knowing it was super addictive. They didn't care, they just wanted / and want to make money. Nevertheless we should work together to stop this. Many people are dying in both countries and it is really sad.

In your dumb little head you see them as hero’s fighting against the evil white American. But in reality the only ones being hurt by cartels are Mexicans in Mexico. So much for being down for la raza. Looks like cartels seem to be more nicer towards Americans because when Americans get hurt by them they apologize but when they hurt Mexicans they record it and put it online for the entire country to see to keep them on check. I feel bad for Mexicans in Mexico who are being terrorized by cartels but I could care less about pochos like you who seem to glorify the cartels because y’all know y’all will never be affected by their terrorist activities in the safety of your parents home somewhere in the USA.
In the USA is common for pochos to drive around blasting terrorist cartel music but you’ll never see that in Mexico because it’s dangerous to do that and most Mexicans know better than to listen to that garbage. One thing I came to notice is how pochos and actual native Mexicans are very different.

The book tells the history of how various US presidents intensified their war on drugs, and how Ronald Reagan's success in shuttering cocaine route from Colombia through the Caribbean and Florida forced Colombian cartels to use routes through Mexico for their drug shipments.
The excerpt describes how Mexican cartels developed, and how by 1984 they controlled 90 percent of the cocaine coming to the US through their country, generating income estimated at $5 billion. Like all figures linked to narcotics, these numbers are more guesses than statistics.
The authors have little sense of the economic dimensions of NAFTA, but they repeat all the prejudices that critics of free trade have attributed to the trade agreement...
The authors blame Reagan for adopting the infamous process of "certification" of countries, based on their cooperation with the US in the war on drugs, when it was really Congress that established these requirements on the Executive.
Thus, Mexico had to be "certified" in order to access essential credit from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB), thus avoiding the US veto.
It is worth remembering that in 1982, Mexico declared bankruptcy thanks to the populist excesses of Luis Echeverria (1970-76) and Jose Lopez Portillo (1976-82). The book ignores this, attributing all blame on the Fed for increasing interest rates to fight high inflation, which indeed contributed to Mexico's economic debacle at the time, but was not the primary cause.
The text also asserts that the IMF and WB forced a structural adjustment program on Mexico:
"The creditors demanded privatization of public services, cuts in government social programs, a wider opening to foreign investment, and a ruthless concentration on paying back loans and interest."
