    Korra shedding a tear during the end was so impactful to me. There was no happy ending with her situation, she was broken. Not every story should be wrapped in a neat little bow tie

      @Jimmy Carr Center Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as well as a near death experience and the effects of poisoning. Any realistic person would be heavily impacted with nearly dying and being reduced to a wheelchair when they were an athletic fighter.

    • @lalalalisa41
      @lalalalisa41 5 ปีที่แล้ว +118

      @Jimmy Carr Center Yeah, but still what she went through here was pretty extremem. She was poisoned, mentally and physically tortured because of said poison, suffocated, nearly died, and then confined to a wheelchair in the end. All of it had to have some kind of immense impact on her. You don't just go through all of that and not come out of it unscathed. Even if one eventually physically heals from it, they'll never be the same mentally.

    • @lalalalisa41
      @lalalalisa41 5 ปีที่แล้ว +111

      @Jimmy Carr Center In ATLA, they never really focused heavily on the trauma aspect of that though. In LOK, it does which I appreciate since most kid's cartoon would just brush that kind of thing aside. Also, why is it unrealistic that trauma would last that long? You don't know how each person may deal with it. Just look at soldiers, rape victims, abuse victims, or anyone who experienced severe trauma. There are those who recover after a few years and those who never really do. And even if those that do recover, they are forever changed. So I don't get what's the problem with Korra here. What she went through was pretty severe for her.

    • @lalalalisa41
      @lalalalisa41 5 ปีที่แล้ว +105

      @Jimmy Carr Center She didn't though. Or did you forget that she couldn't accept what had happened until after facing Zaheer again later? Just because Toph helped guide her in taking out the last of the poison doesn't mean it magically fixes her mental trauma or all the personal issues she's been dealing with since the start.
      With Toph, that was fixing her physically though she was still rusty as hell going up against Kuvira as well as plagued by the mental stuff.

      Yafet Shibeshi wth. tell me, mister, how would people get the ability to bend an element if not from the lion turtle? that would mean anyone would be able to learn how to bend just by visiting the original masters (bisons, dragons, badgermoles and the moon), which is obviously not true. people could kinda control the element (like summoning fire), but they were not able to fully dominate it, they learned that with the masters (after receiving the ability to bend from the lion turtles, of course). and don’t you think that if it was up to tenzin and his children to rebuild an entire nation, they would probably not succeed? i mean, it would be “easy” for them to be exterminated, since there would be just 5 of them. zaheer was already dangerous without airbending.

    What got me was how realistically this season finale handled the extremely traumatic experience which Korra had to endure. Nearly dying, forced into the avatar state, poison forced into your body, violated. That isn't something that normal people are just okay with and get over immediately. It stays with you. They gave great care to portray a decidedly post-trauma Korra, which shapes her character through the final season.

    • @antony1397
      @antony1397 6 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      That's the thing, I felt like Aang bounced back way to quick after getting shot with lighting. Sure he was out 2 weeks but he was pretty much 100% the next episode. Also the emotional baggage associated with a tramatic event like that wasn't really touched upon. It's something that was done much better in LOK.

    • @innocentdude4968

    Shane basically nailed it, and is a lot like Korra. I'm sure she probably rather had die, then to be disabled and helpless. You'll see more of this struggle and growth in Book 4, and it's a huge part of why that's my favorite season.

      I agree, 3 had the best fight scenes and "camera work" by far but 4 had emotions that even the original series can't really top (outside of Iroh's "Leaves from the vine" episode).

      Italian Supreme Yes, the emotions and character growth is at an all time high in that season. I was really moved by it, and many fans were even inspired. Seeing Korra in that state, and how she comes out of it is some of the best storytelling you'll see in cartoons these days.

    Poor Eric being shouted down while being the only one who remembers the lore of Avatar at the table...
    Aang never could, and never *did* fly; maybe he did in the sense *we* attribute to the word, but not in the Avatar sense; the meaning of the word "fly" in Avatar can be found in the true masters of the art, the *Flying Bisons* we've known since episode 1.
    *They* are capable of flying, and you'll see that, even though they are *capable* of bending air, you never see a giant tornado sphere around them when they take off, *like Aang always had when he left the ground* . They just ignore the force of Gravity and take off effortlessly.
    That is the same thing Zaheer mastered, a technique that, like Tenzin said, hadn't been used by any human beings in thousands of years.
    By the definition of the words *in the Avatar World* , Aang could only glide; an enhanced gliding, thanks to his air bending, but gliding nevertheless.

    • @CaMpEeeeerX
      @CaMpEeeeerX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Mordirit but there is that one episode in book 1 where they are going to the air temple where is that guy what developed flying ships and aang say when he saw people flying there that those are not airbenders they are not flying they are just gliding
      Ofc we know that airbenders fly so that they manipulate wind around their gliders so they do somethinf in between flying and gliding

    • @Papanda1995
      @Papanda1995 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yes! And considering Zaheer's ability to fly had something to do with spirituality and cutting off his attachments to the world, it seems like perhaps anyone could achieve that even if they're not an airbender. Airbenders are probably just more likely to achieve it since their culture revolves around being spiritual. But definitely different from Aang since Aang used the elements to hold him up in the air, while Zaheer can simply do it on his own.

    • @ChocolateVanilluxeTV
      @ChocolateVanilluxeTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Mordirit 100% correct. I think the most comprehensive way to explain it is Zaheer had unlocked the ability of Unaided Flight. Technically, Aang needed a physical item to remain airborne, without his glider, he'd just start falling, as he has multiple times in the past when his glider was destroyed.
      Zaheer needed no item, he was ultimately effortlessly becoming airborne (or becoming the wind). The difference is execution, while they both are in the air, their means of staying airborne are fundamentally different...

    • @DracoRach
      @DracoRach 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If you are moving around in the air without a ship, bison or glider, you are flying. Aann didnt glide or fall he just fly. Zaheer can fly forever, Aang not but he can fly.

    • @ChocolateVanilluxeTV
      @ChocolateVanilluxeTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Rachito no Aang can glide. He doesn't have the ability to remain airborne without his GLIDEr and a consistent air current. Simply because he manipulates the air current, doesn't mean he's flying like an Air Bison or Zaheer flies...
      Aang is gliding, it looks like he's flying, the same way it looks like a flying squirrel is flying, but it's only gliding from tree to tree using the air current available to stay airborne long enough not to fall to the ground.

    • @MasterDoctorBenji
      @MasterDoctorBenji ปีที่แล้ว

      Old comment but, i like how an anarchist and individualist was taken down by a group, literally by a community/nation. Showing the fault in his ideology.
      He says, a man's only duty is to himself and those he loves. He also hates those with too much power/authority over others. However eliminating governments only shifts that power. Long term the most powerful or richest would amass an army and set up their own 'kingdom'. Those who dont want to live in fear would submit to their protection and would be vulnerable to their exploitation. This is the problem with right wing anarchism. Power vacuum will always be filled.
      The Air Nation shows the power of creating a community. The group outmatched the individual who was stronger than any one of them. We can see the corrupted version of this in the Earth Kingdom. However if we as a community choose to balance that power as evenly as possible, then we can have a truly successful society.

    This finale was so electrifying, groundbreaking, and breathtakingly beautiful!! ...I'll stop it now :P
    Korra vs Zaheer was very reminiscent of Aang vs Ozai except the roles were reversed!
    Zaheer's defeat was so poetic. Got taken down by airbenders and was chained and slammed back down to the earth!
    The music that was playing during the ceremony was called "Service and Sacrifice"! I love how it felt both hopeful and sad at the same time. We see how hopeful the future looks with the first airbendering master in a generation leading it, but we also feel sad because of Korra. Seeing Korra not being her usual spunky and fiery self really messed me up. Her sitting in that wheelchair looking depressed hurt my heart. It actually reminded me of what she first said at the start of the series "I'm the Avatar, and you gotta deal with it!" Looks like she's finally realizing the weight of those words. She is the Avatar, she does have to deal with all of this ...and she looks broken under the weight of it all...
    B1: Korra loses her bending
    B2: Korra loses her past lives
    B3: Korra loses her physical capabilities
    B4: ??
    Damn man, stop having Korra lose something!
    Zaheer is flying like how air bison would fly. Aang flying in comparison to that was different. That's how I see it.
    Also, I wouldn't really say Bolin was that proficient with lavabending. Just looking at how Ghazan was completely dominating him kind of said as much. Bolin is still relatively new to it and is most likely still figuring things out. TRIAL BY FIRE!! Best way to learn lavabending ~
    I always saw Mako using his lightning as a last resort kind of thing. I mean, did you see what his face looked like after electrocuting Ming Hua? It was the look of "I fuckin' killed someone..." xD

    So glad you guys kept in the final shot because for me, it's one of the most powerful and hard-hitting shots in either ATLA or Korra, cause you have what supposed to be this happy ending with the villain being defeated and the optimism of the new airbenders contrasted with this depressing shot of Korra in a wheelchair crying. You can clearly see Korra has been through a lot and is struggling but in many ways I think that's what makes her such a compelling hero and character is that she's not perfect and she has to overcome these truly traumatic experiences on her journey as the avatar.

      And btw based on what "flying" is in the world of Avatar, Aang never flew in ATLA, either with his glider or while he was in the Avatar State; Zaheer is the only one, as Tenzin said, to be able to fly in thousands of years.

    The "flying power" is in reference to air benders' ability of pure spiritual energy to negate the effects of gravity around them. All other "sorta" flying powers you were discussing use thrust or momentum to counter gravity but it's still being affected on them. It's not "pure" flight in the way that Tenzin is talking about.

    This finale was insane, it deserved the hour-long discussion, although I kinda wish you didn't spend so much time discussing "flying". To me, Zaheer is the only one who can truly fly by himself (no help from air, fire, tools or otherwise). Aang, Korra and others "fly" in the mundane sense, but they truly glide, levitate or just propel. Only Zaheer can fly.
    I love that Shane is such a fanboy of this series. I agree, this finale was so beautifully sad and hopeful at the same time. It's a piece of art, man. On imprisoning Zaheer, they really can't stop him going to the Spirit World without killing his body (think of Jinora after she couldn't return to her body). And yes, anyone who is spiritual can meditate into the Spirit World.
    Next season is crazy (even though I think S3 is the best of all 4). Can't wait to see you react to the next 2 episodes, they are something magnificent. See ya there!

      I think also (although im not 100% sure), that the new technique Jinora created was the tornado technique she created after amassing wind from the other airbenders, and that's what counted for her original technique, because it can be replicated, while im pretty sure the projection thing is just something unique to Jinora. But Tenzin gave her the tattoos after this battle specifically for a reason, and that was the high mastery she displayed to make that super tornado.

Nickelodeon first ordered half a season with book 1, which often happens with new shows. Before the first book even aired, the second book was ordered. Zaheer flying is a weightlessness like you mentioned. Its an air bending move in the same way Jinora's astral projection is a air bending move. Based on how its depicted and described its best not to think of it as physical bending but rather a spiritual bending connected to air, and it doesn't seem to have any strain on the person; air bending if you are powerful enough like an avatar can get you to fly by making yourself a tornado to ride in but that takes stamina like all bending while based on the legend we hear this does not, you are just now weightless.

    Flight Wars is best Wars.
    Everything with the gliders was assisted flight at best and controlled falling at worst, and doesn't count in the way Zaheer's flight does. That said, Aang totally flew every time he went Avatar State. I guess Raava just has that as a power and everybody else prior to Laghima had no answer. Actual legit non-freakazoid airbenders achieving unassisted flight is something impressive, because otherwise it's something ONLY the Avatar can do.

    • @ashleynl6731
      @ashleynl6731 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Zaheer could only fly because he had let go of all earthly attachments; although I think it was more of a weightlessness that allowed him to fly. Airbender Avatars can't achieve what Zaheer does because of what Yangchen says to Aang in Atla Book Three: The Old Masters "many great and wise air nomads have detached themselves and achieved spiritual enlightenment. But the Avatar can never do it, because your sole duty is to the world..." In a way, Aang did achieve some spiritual enlightenment, because he had to let go of Katara to enter the Avatar State, but he can't let go of attachments to the world like Zaheer permanently, because he has to care about the world, and the world's affairs.
      Aang never flew, he used bending as propulsion. I cant remember every episode name, but I remember when he went into the avatar state
      Before the show started
      When he froze Appa and him into the iceberg, which is obviously just water bending
      Book One
      -when he fell into the water after his first brief fight with Zuko on the boat(episode 2 I think), he was able to propel himself out by using water bending
      -episode 3 or 4 I think, he created massive winds when he saw the body of Monk Gyatso, ultimately creating a powerful sphere of air encompassing him which was holding him up, like he did with the fight with Ozai (when he used all four elements)
      -Episode 8ish, He channeled Roku to get rid of the firebenders at the fire temple, which was just Roku blasting fire and lavabending to destroy the temple
      -"The Storm" he used the avatar state to round up everyone when they fell into the ocean in the storm. Again it was water bending to propel them
      -The season finale, he merges with La and waterbends to destroy the fire nation ships
      Book 2
      -episode one: he entered the Avatar state after seeing Katara in danger; again he never flew, he used airbending to knock the general down, and rose in a tornado then crashed down and earthbended destroying the surrounding area. He rose in another air sphere(again he's not flying, his airbending is holding him up) before Roku took him
      -Episode 11: when he goes ape shit at the sand benders. Same thing though, he makes an air sphere which lifts him up, due to his airbending
      -season finale: this one I can kind of see the argument for flying, since it's not really clear what is holding him up. I think it's him airbending, due to his hand position similar to previous episodes when he was in the avatar state
      Book 3
      Series finale: the air sphere is again how he propelled himself while chasing Ozai
      I don't know if other airbenders had the same ability to use airspheres to get around, as it's never indicated. I personally think no, that the airsphere was strictly only used by the avatar. But again, Aang never does fly, the air sphere is what propels him around, whereas Zaheer is literally floating and weightless.
      Personally my jaw dropped when Zaheer was flying, it was absolutely crazy

      Matthew McBoyle Aaron is one huge ass troll. If some normal person unlocked the ability to bend all 4 elements, he'd act like it isn't special because Aang and Korra do it all of the time.

      The problem for me was I didnt felt at all like zaheer lost all atatchments to „earth“ or whatever. just killing the woman he loved didnt make it believable. Did he really overcome his will to revenge her? did he overcome all his grief just in that moment or what? whitout that how is he now free from attachment.
      and even besides all that. Him carrieng the avatar away, planning to kill him, for what? obviously to change the world, not just that but the physical world as the avatar is about the physical world. and also his plannes to kill of all the rullers is about the physical world and it doenst just make him not attached to it, because he doesnt plannes to rule himself. thats not how it works. he‘s intervening because he thinks its better because he wants it to better which very much is to be attached to something.
      The way Zaheer managed to fly line you showed me how he got there makes me think that there shoud be a lot of airbending gurus that can do it and its not that rare at all.
      (sorry for bad english:)

      @@mr.kingofphenomenal4629 He is able to use bending to propel himself, whereas Zaheer is flying because he doesn't have any earthly attachments. Which like I said previously isn't possible for the avatar. He uses air spheres to move around. When he enters the avatar state, he quasi flies, but again it's because he has the air sphere around him to propel him forward, which again I already pointed out in my comment and I quote "Aang never does fly, the air sphere is what propels him around, whereas Zaheer is literally floating and weightless. ". Please read my comment more carefully next time. Zaheer is the only person who is shown to fly without bending.

    about the flying discussion, from a scientific approach i would say when zaheer recites ''enter the void'' it may have meant that he morphs his molecular structure into the molecular structure of air and he is just sliding through the air particle using inertia to move around the air. not gliding nor flying but becoming air itself

    I think even though Amon liked about his past and being a bender, his motivations were still genuine. His father made him and his brother do reprehensible things and that caused Amon to see all bending as evil. He was taught from a young age to use bending to dominate others, so it's understandable that those experiences would color his views on all bending.

    • @JKBlackClover
      @JKBlackClover 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I don’t know what the heck Eric was thinking when he said Amon’s motivation was less genuine when he was revealed as a waterbended. His motivation never changed. Tarlokk literally says I think my brother truly believes bending is the root of all evil.

    Oh yeah, there's quite a few parallels to AtLA that you guys touched upon in the discussion with the crystal cave fight, a group of people badly underestimating the power of Avatar State if you force it to activate, and that final fight between Korra/Zaheer...
    With Korra in a wheelchair and the Earth Kingdom in chaos, I'm sure there will be someone who steps up and reestablishes order and brings back balance to the EK until she can recover
    Looking forward to seeing how you guys react to book 4 :)

    Aang was levitating himself through the air using the airbending technique that he commonly started up with whenever he went into the Avatar State. The circle of air bent around him is a crutch, he would not be able to go through the air like that without it. Zaheer's technique is often referred to as "unassisted flight," because he does not require any stepping stool to pull off levitation, he can just fly at will.

All of the times they kept mentioning Zuko coming back as a major player or always referring to the kids of the previous characters as "you're the daughter of whoever" instead of praising these characters for what their own skills are and what they've done. This video was the worst case for that. You have this great bitter sweet ending. Shane is the only one paying attention while the rest talk over it and debate about the series finale of ATLA.

    Zaheer was flying like the bison fly. Aang normally flew by bending around his glider to create lift. In the finale, his airbending was so powerful the moving air was like a solid lifting him up. Similar to how the fire-rocket shoe thing works, or the water pillar that Korra does a lot.

    Eric is right, Aang was using air bending to float and have momentum, he wasn't "flying" he was using the elements to get momentum. Every time Aang went into the avatar state, he had huge waves of air surrounding him, keeping him off the ground. Fire benders did this all the time by shooting fire blast from their hands to push them forward or upwards.

    Aang was encased in a giant ball of air while Zaheer became air itself to lift himself off the ground. You could say they are both technically flying but it's better to say that Aang is using his element to achieve flight while Zaheer is actually flying on his own. Like for example, people fly in planes everyday but that's not the same as flying like Superman.

    And the ending is easily the most brutal endings of Avatar ever.
    Gotta love Korra Season 3.
    And Eric was right, the other 3 were absolutely demonstrably wrong. The reason why Zaheer was able to fly-fly was because he was able to let go his earthly tether, enter the void, empty and become wind when Pli got her head blown off. AANG wasn't able to let go his earthly tether 'coz Katara still existed and he still loved her.
