Best volleyball tutorial on TH-cam. Coach Donny provides extremely detailed "how to" descriptions along with supporting examples, often with slow motion video. Extremely talented coach. Well done series.
I have a Question . How to rotate my body In midair For generating more power in my Spike because When I Am doing Armswing standing On the groud I can Rotate my torso with the help of the axis On my leg but In midair I can't Rotate my body because I have no axis to rotate on an nd generate more power
@@tommyshelby8119 Make sure you jump facing 90 degrees or almost 90 degrees to the side and the key is your left arm (your right arm if you hit with your left hand). The more force you use to swing it down, the faster your torso will twist. And the more area your left arm is moving through, the more torque you'll generate. So i recommend keeping your left arm fully extended all the way through the swing, from when you're aiming with it to when you swing it down beside you. Tucking it in may feel more normal but wont let you twist as much.
@@ericshepard1547 You should strengthen your rotator cuffs and focus more on externally rotating your shoulders since we rotate our shoulders internally while spiking.
@@infernal.. keep your elbows against your body and then rotate your shoulders away from your body. That's external rotation. Do the opposite then it'll be internal rotation.
Thank you SO MUCH. I started varsity this year and my position is outside hitter. I told my parents to record me so that I can study and learn from mistakes etc. I kept looking at my form and how I spiked.. it looked very weird to me so I looked up videos on forms. I saw this and clicked on it. I have practice next week and I’m looking very forward to it thanks to you! I never knew you had to put your elbow up while you spike, so thank you!
Huge help! I got into volleyball later in life and in the south we don't have men's volleyball whatsoever. I've been playing for two years now without proper instruction and coach, your videos are beyond helpful! This one video alone was helped me tremendously in my swing!
Thanks for this. I tried spiking a volleyball for the first time and it went horrible. My timing was off with the setter and my spikes were completely inconsistent. Turns out my elbow wasn’t high enough. It was splayed towards the right so it kept guiding my hand into the ball sidewards causing the inconsistencies. It was just out of habit from how I throw a baseball. Good thing you cleared it up for me before trials, thanks!
Your tutorials are so easy to understand coach donny ty !! I'm just getting into volleyball and I'm liking it so I'm gonna now convince my friends to play it too
Thank you for the clear explanation and the supporting videos in fast and slow motion at different angles....really helpful to solidify the mechanics of the movement
I recorded myself practicing using your technicks. can I show you the clip and maybe you can critic what I am doing wrong... I did jump serve and just simple serve.... I feel like I am always doing something wrong. twisting or not twisting... anyway I recorded for myself but I can show you and I would really appreciate critic
You might never read but ur so helpful I have try outs in 5 days and from ur other videos u already taught me how to spike and serve well. I really appreciate this be cause other tutorials teach u how they do but u don’t. Big up mate 🔥 Edit: not to mention ur teaching so well through a screen!
I always bring tennis ball to practice my spike ill jump like im gonna spike holding a tennis ball to get my proper form before hitting the actual volleyball. It hepls alot 😁
I only started volleyball this year (grade 9/14yrs) and I'm afraid that it's too late, because most people that play in collegiate teams or open conferences start at 6th or 5th grade. Thank you so much, you helped me a lot, both in how I play and in my confidence😊
So similar form to serving in tennis.. back in middle school I didn’t have access to TH-cam so I bought a thin tennis magazine with snippets of professional players serving/hitting forms and studied and drilled them for months. Having teachers on TH-cam is such a blessing nowadays. Now I’m interested in learning volleyball!
Just got back to volleyball recently and i forgot how to hit with proper form. The "open + rotate" was very helpful to reduce my shoulder strain and hitting with more power. Thank you
Omg I can't wait to practice this because our coach's helper is always yelling at me instead of teaching me how to practice. Thank you. You are a life saver coach if you weren't here to teach us I would've been the worst in my team for the rest of my life haha.
Thank you so much, learnt a lot, I was just analyzing , at 0:58 elbow high, your left hand is still high, but in actual swings you shown later, the hand is somewhere near waist height. I Understand, just pointing hope it helps whoever reads.
If you look at some of the best hitters internationally including Clay Stanley they start their arm swings by swinging behind first then follow through up high connecting with the ball. It almost looks like a windmill. I used to hit like that this in high school then I was corrected to use your technique. Although I can bounce a ball over a backboard I don't seem to hit as heavy now. Great videos btw.
thanks bro really i like your videos, im also playing volleyball but im spiking with left hand, and sometime i have problem with seter could you give me and other people whose playing with left hand, and any advise which side is better for us and how to increase jump.. thanks
coach donny is so good even tho we have the same height but his jumps are higher than mine, huhuh need to practice more. Thanks for these videos, it helped me improved my approach.
Great video coach! One question about elbow high position: your hand faces down and the palm is almost on your right shoulder. while most other instruction videos, the hand usually faces up or outward in this position. Will the hand face down help generate more power on the swing?
sir u r awsm.. i learnt smashing by watching ur videos.. 1st 1st it was impossible for me to smash.. now i feel comfortable.. noone is calling me loser... thanks sir.. wish ur videos will help boys lyk me..
Thank you so much for this. My coach didn't really teach us, he just expected us to already know how to do it. When I was struggling he never even really tried to teach me it, he just stayed silent and watched me continue to fail. Hopefully, this will help me in my practices. Thanks :-)
Hey Coach Donny! I watched this video to help me improve my arm swing. But recently I've come across videos talking about different types of arm swing. Can you do a video on different types of arm swings ( circular, bow and arrow, straight )?
I'm doing everything I see you do, and I've watched all your spiking videos thoroughly, but my shoulder is still having pains. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Advice?
How can I train myself (as a setter) to spike the 1st pass. I find it very difficult as I'm right handed but I see many setters hitting with their left, and doing it effectively. Ive tried practicing but it doesn't seem to help.
When contacting the ball below the equator, I'm not quite sure how to generate a good amount of top spin. I've only heard that the majority of the spin created by snapping through an "off center" placed hit. This makes sense when hitting above the equator and following through, but I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong when hitting below the equator. If you have insight on this, I would love to hear it!
Coach Donnie, in the slow motion examples it doesn't look like you actually touch the back of your neck...is this idea just a feeling? Or do you achieve it sometimes? High contact is something I want to work on and any help you can give would be great. Thanks. Mark P
Not too loose and not too rigid usually will be good enough. Some situations would require a stiffer hand and some situations will require a softer hand.

Hey Donny, great video. Do you have any tips on improving your spike if you're really short? I'm 5'1, haha I know, don't laugh. I can spike a ball with some speed and power. When you do ELBOW HIGH into SWING, I can see your palm face your biceps and then about halfway through the swing, your palm faces the ball. 2:09 Is the palm rolling healthier or just a personal preference?
You need to have a relaxed wrist when executing your arm swing, so this movement comes natural. It is not of vital importance where exactly the palm is facing during this motion as long as you hit the ball with your palm at the point of contact, creating topspin through your relaxed wrist.
