I second this. How you break down Taylor's demonstrations by looping and rewinding two to three second increments rather than doing a whole demonstration and replaying it is way easier to identify what you're talking about. This is easily my biggest qualm with most of the how-to videos out there: they show the whole thing normal speed, then once in slow motion, whereas I'd rather see the narration isolated and just looped like you guys did. Thanks a bunch. Hopefully I'll stop tearing my rotater cuff...
Hey boys ! For the spike, do we have to spike with a big open hand ? And how To roll the ball ? I'm 15yo, 190cm and a year ago I was better than today.. I cannot spike in 3 meters anymore Please help i need to improve, i only spike very deep and i think that my arm swing has changed ! Thank you and sorry for the bad English, i'm French Love your videos
After playing volleyball for 15 yrs this was a great reminder to re check what I was doing in my swing. Thank you for breaking it down properly and showing the bare bones. Your videos are great and have helped me get back into the game after my back surgery. Best of luck in the coming years guys.
Practice it standing on the floor. Repeat the movements and learn them. Once you learned them star again, but jumping for spike. At first, do it without a ball to hit, and then add one when you are sure that your swing mechanics are good
same. when i jump i arch my back and lead with my hips, then when i swing i flex my back and push the ball from behind me to down. it worked at first but i hurt my back from overuse and now i’m trying to fix it because i can’t swing like i used to :’). moral of the story, if something’s wrong with your swing fix it early!! not just for productivity but to save yourself from potential injuries.
I'm 53 years old and have been playing volleyball for over 30 years. The last 5 years or so my spike velocity has dropped off significantly. After watching this video, I thought I would try the "nike swoosh" technique. OMG, what a difference! I don't think I've ever hit this hard in my life. Thanks McKibbin brothers for doing this video!
Been watching all your tutorials and get a lot of tips on how to improve my game.. sad to say im in my early 40"s but the passion for the is still there, im a small dude who wants to improve my setting skills, coz I can't jump high, neither can block the ball.. I was trained to be a libero then converted to setter.. thanks guys!
This helped so much! I was taught a different way and my arm and shoulder would always hurt so badly after practice. Thanks so much! You guys not only are teaching great tips and tricks but also preventing people from getting hurt while spiking.
Hey, just wanted to say thank you for this video. I used to over rely on my vertical and pay little attention to other parts of a proper attack, and I am devastated when my knee suddenly lock up after a jump. Since I’m still waiting for results of my MRI, i can only play with protective gears that severely limited my vertical. It got so bad I felt like I might not be able to play volleyball anymore. Which is when I came across this video. Your explanation and slow mo broke it down so well I managed to fix my arm swing within two weeks. Just in time for my school tournament and managed to contribute to my team despite the injuries. I cannot convey how thankful I am, really. Thank you
This... I wish I had this 20 years ago. Surprisingly technical but clear explanation. I probably could’ve saved myself some injuries with this knowledge.
Rewatching this and others in prep for start of 2s here in Michigan. The teaching is great, but what makes these the best is the commentary, joking around, and analogies.
Wow I've been really hitting wrong all this time. Maybe thats why my shoulder feels like it's burning off after open gym, and that my friend who's jumps as high as I do, and around the same strength seems to just pound the ball so much harder than I do. Damn..... Thanks so much for the tutorial, great video. Time to retool my swing.
Im somewhat new to the beach volleyball scene and I keep rewatching this video to learn how to hit. Priceless information. Really glad to have found this channel.
Sometimes like now I'm so sorry that there's only one word for "thank you" and it's "thank you"😂 because I would like to express my gratitude with some more telling word. These videos really help me to understand how exactly to move my body, legs and arms because the explanations are clear and it's really useful that you mention how to prevent injuries. I'm 10th grade and have liked volleyball since maybe 8th grade and this year I'm part of the school volleyball club and I wish I have found your channel earlier because sometimes the teacher can't explain everything at once, there are other players too, everyone's on different level and she just can't advise only me. So this is like an individual training for me, respectively the part where you explained how not to injure the arm was totally on place because no more than 2 weeks ago I kind of began to spike really good and the trainer said that I make progress really fastly, praised me for improving well, so I thought that I have say so "mastered" the attack until the next morning I woke up with some pain in the right shoulder, few days after I even couldn't raise my arm and now I understand why this accident happened. I love watching compilations like this one th-cam.com/video/MJ098iArnpk/w-d-xo.html and I certainly noticed some of the things you mentioned in the video but when you explained it step by step and said what exactly is attained with every movement, together with the slow motion review it all made sense and everything became so... clear😯. Also it's great that the videos aren't too long, I get the point easily, having in mind that English isn't my mother language. In short thank you so much, greetings from Bulgaria❤
Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing. One thing I would recommend adding though is more explanation on the “how, where & why” to finish with the lead hand. After he pulls he gets it pressed to his body to prevent over rotation, giving him more control over the hit. A lot of kids will pull the lead hand down, but let it continue to dangle. I started emphasizing this a few years ago with the kids I work with and it helps keep them from taking that “statue of liberty” approach”” and it’s made a huge difference in helping them build those good habits at a younger age.
Stumbled upon you guys searching for vids of Taylor (went to school together), but got intrigued by your guys’ content and the fact that you both are pros and still dish out all these vids in your spare time. Really awesome to see. Def got a new long term sub! 🤙🏽
Great stuff! You guys rock. Can you talk about the wrist snap in the swing and any preferred contact point on the ball? I just recently learned to snap more and it’s been a game changer. Better angles, more power and saves the shoulder.
Thank you for this video! I've been trying to fix my swing for ages. Firing with the hip and using the right arm as a whip has been a game changer for me!
Dude you guys are so freaking awesome. I’ve been searching all day how to hit a volleyball because I lately started playing and you guys made it so simple and explained everything on how to make sure your safe and to get a better swing. THANK YOU SO MUCH
Wow boys...what can I say? Very informative. TBH, every HS and club coach should circulate this. In this bang-bang generation where everything has to be nutshell'd, this is near-flawless. Keep up the good work, beard bros...
Hey guys! Thanks so much for the tutorial here - it's fantastic! I'm using it to coach the grade 9 girls team about using their core while hitting, and the swoosh (swish??). Trying to give them good habits at the beginning of their VB career.. It's great to see the clear, instruction with the humour... Thanks!
You dont need to be big to be able to hit hard, it doesnt matter the sport, learning how to move your body and transferring the energy to the ball is the most important. I have a friend who is a gym rat, dude is swole af, weights 180 i think, im a skinny ass dude who weighs 140, and i hit 5 times harder than he does, because i have a better swing and loose, he is stiff when he swings.
You are absolutely right, what matters is how to transfer the energy. How to give momentum to the ball? Be your hand the fastest when hitting the ball. Love your videos! Been watching since you've started and I started rewatching again. I'd love to see you guys breakdown some games. Combine your tutorials within a game. Breakdown what you did right and wrong, starting with serve receive to setting to the batter's box to arm swing. Then to the defense of blocking calls, positioning, and the strike zone. Even what your mindset should have been during a frustrating game.
Would love a video on dinks and technicality of illegal tipping! (My rec group keeps arguing about slappy/cutty open hand attacks that land short) Thanks!

Fantastic video! Watch, try, watch, try - rinse, repeat until you get it working. I can say it about all tutorial videos. Love them because they are not only informative but also fun :)
I have used the "trebuchet" as the analogy for the arm and wrist. All straight at the moment of contact, with a fast wrist multiplying the velocity. Then of course, "thumb up" and "thumb down" to steer the ball (and hide it from bockers) instead of using your shoulder.
As an adult beginner, these videos are great to break down my mechanics. Would you guys be able to post some self-practice tips for enforcing them? Great vids btw!!! Thanks!!
Great presentation and explanation of the mechanics of the arm action for the volleyball hit. I agree with the last comment . The best I have ever seen. Too many players drop the hitting arm elbow which reduces power, variability and increases the risk of injury. Thank you.
You guys are cool. And the "Bug" can Hit. I coach 7th grade girls. And the porblem with them is timing. I asked them why do you choose to Hit at a game when it has been set perfectly and you choose to freestanding hit. The answered " Cause we don't want to miss and look stupid at a game in front of the spectators, family or friends. WOW! So you rather take the chance for the other tem to score and look better? That was my reply. So, I tried multiple ways when to start your approach as the ball touches the hands of the setter. But they still stutter step and that's is one of the reasons the timing is off. After I see this video I liked how you both explained the steps and it's purpose ( which I have to do coaching the level of youth volleyball. I know its not me. And I know that most of my girls (if they try much more harder) can execute this main feature of volleyball. You might have already Ade a video of this cause I have not had a chance to scroll thrill of the yet. But if you have time , ideas and or suggestions that can help me explain it to them much better. I would appreciate it and will run the drill at our practices. Keep up the good work and thank you. Coach Jeff
Disregard, I found the proper video. Pretty close to what I have been training them to do. But, your 4 step hitting work is better. Lol P.S. I totally missed your explanation on the begining of this video that directs me to that link. Thanks guys. I will update you on the results....Coach Jeff.
Hey McKibbin bros. These videos are amazing! I have been playing outdoor doubles for quite some time now and have always done well with my three step approach. Is that somethin you guys think I should change? Thanks
fantastic video, thanks for breaking down all the different parts, but are these mechanics only for beach volley or can I apply them to volleyball as well??
Great video with the exception of the high elbow. Best pitchers and volleyball attackers when they are "loaded" their elbow is not above the ear. Your example you can see Crabbe gets his elbow below the ear before "unloading"
Great video again! I think in the first video you mentioned something about workout, and I would really used advice on some after training stretching. I think it would also make a great video! :-D
So I’m short but yet I am able to jump I just want to know how is there a way of exercise or practice I can do to get my timing and my initial jump higher? Barely started watching you guys cause of my recommenced but I’m glad I cross path with this TH-cam channel keep on going
Another great explanation. Especially at the 4ish mark on the sequential impact all those individual mechanics make! Question? ... So we play often in a park that is infamous for the depths of it's sand (you'd swear there are sand ppl hiding waiting to grab you by the ankles) and the heights of it's net (+3-5 inches above regulation). How much value do you see in consistently training/playing on higher nets? Should we lower to regulation? Looking forward to seeing videos on the dynamics of playing in the wind at the beach. Here in south florida our winds can change drastically in different directions during a match.
MCKB Volleyball ok that's what i've been thinking. Most of us are competing at a AAA level and even though we have had success, the gap between aaa/open still seems significant. Mainly because of the speed and aggression of the game... 70/30 shots to spikes ratio grind out games is what usually takes place here. I believe this would help the group lvl up their game... Some guys wear the whole higher net thing as a badger of honor though.😲
This is the best video for hitting that I've seen (trust me I've seen a lot). You really broke it down, props to you

You dont need to be big to be able to hit hard, it doesnt matter the sport, learning how to move your body and transferring the energy to the ball is the most important. You are absolutely right, what matters is how to transfer the energy. How to give momentum to the ball? Be your hand the fastest when hitting the ball. That's why the "mechanics" should start from your main body, then shoulder, upper arm, lover arm. Then right after the touch your wrist comes , to pull the hit down. It is like a cow whip.

Really wish I had this video 10 years ago I mightve saved my shoulder.
awesome video guys!! thanks a lot! are there any exercises that are beneficial for twisting or exercises to avoid piking?
