  • Hi there! A really short one here as I am bad at writing jazz, but i thought I'd give it a go anyway haha, and as if writing jazz wasnt hard enough, I went and did it in musescore (this is because i have no jazzy vsts, so if you know any free/cheap ones, let me know!!)
Anyway, i hope you enjoy this one!

I love this idea! Just my two un-asked for cents: Double the tempo but double the note values of the bass line. Now, give the bass line to the brass section (a couple of trumpets, sax). Make the bass walk only in quarter notes. For a B section, you can play the melody you arranged, which also sounds great!

Wow, thanks so much for the advice! I haven't composed any jazz stuff before so any suggestions are great :) I'll try out what you've said and post it next week

hmm i think you should look a little into jazz conventions because other than the chromaticism and discordant chords i dont really get jazz vibes from this. the drums should be accenting the 2 and 4 for example, and swung in triplets preferrably. Bass would usually outline the root/3rd/5th/scale note in continuous 8ths and the piano and sax like the drums should have accents land on the 2 and 4, and melodies that go 'over the bar line' i.e. continue between bars.

im also not entirely sure i buy the interplay of the chords and bassline. both are fine on their own but its a bit like youve taken a hard bop bassline and put it under a bebop/free jazz chordal structure and halved the speed. maybe let me know what kind of jazz you'd wanna emulate and i can give you artists to listen to and more specific help?

Really thanks for the feedback, I'm very inexperienced so I appreciate all the advice! Umm, I don't really know what style of jazz I was trying to emulate here, but I'll definitely do some more research especially for the drums and the bass line. I really need to listen to more jazz I guess. What artists would you recommend?

@@oscarllywelyn if youre totally new, maybe start with the classics like chet baker, ella fitzgerald, bill evans, billie holiday, nat king cole, stan getz (dont have to listen to all of them, maybe one song from each just to find out what you like)
if you like stuff thats a bit more bluesy and drum focused, hard bop artists like bobby timmons, art blakey or sonny clark
if you like more abstract stuff maybe coltraine

@@oscarllywelyn Im sorry for implying I ever stopped! Just moved to a more live style of arranging and composing.
Studio sessions and stuff like that - the midi trumpets might be nostalgic but I aim for slightly more professional sounding results nowadays ;)

I would just take care when thinking about real instruments it's pretty cool on musescore but those chords are impossible in a real guitar unless you're a tune freak

Oh really? I've never played guitar so I was just pasting piano chords in there 😂 Thanks for the heads up :)
