an attempt at chorale harmony

- Hi there! So I've recently been using a bach chorale music book to practice sight reading and after watching a video on harmonising chorales, i took a melody and attempted to harmonise in a 4-part style.
I tried to include a couple of bits of counterpoint in there to keep it interesting as well as using things like scalic descents in the bass.
Hope you enjoy and i would love any feedback :)
#composition #musescore #chorale #bach
Sounds good but the Bass voice is supposed to have notes with stems on the left going down, the "2nd voice" or the green voice on musescore. The tenor voice has notes with stems on the left going up.
Oh really? That makes sense, thanks for the heads up!
@@oscarllywelyn Yeah you'll find it'll look a lot cleaner and nicer.
It sounds basically just like any hymn I’ve ever sung in music class
Exactly lol
Nice! As an old-school organist I hear a parallel fifth at the end (c-g, a-d). Also, the "Terz" (third?, f#) is missing in the main beat of the second fourth of the last bar.
Thanks :) I'm still learning the rules for chorale writing so the feedback is appreciated!
what vst are you using for the organ?
It's spitfire labs tape orchestra: vox humana. Completely free 🙂
How do you link it to Musescore or the software you're using if it isn't Musescore
@@Mutuli in musescore 4 and older, open the mixer and click on the sound. From there, you can select external VSTs
Thanks, lemme try.
Not bad, any particular style you're trying to focus on? From just the videos alone, it seems like you're generalizing, which isn't a bad thing.
To be honest, I wasn't (and still an not) aware of different styles of chorale 😅
I was just going off some Bach chorales I had in a sightreading book really. Are there any videos you recommend for me to find out more about chorales or any other composers I should hear? Thanks for the comment :)
@@oscarllywelyn There's videos on partimenti and throroughbass chorales. I have my own set of partimenti, and there you'll pretty much find all the links to the various resources there. Not trying to self promo, but if you're interested.
@@oscarllywelyn Also, I'd listen to composers like Corelli and Handel, not necessarily just Bach. Try the 12 Concerto Grossi by Handel, or Corelli's Concerto Grossi. Also, try listening to Corelli's 12 Trio Sonatas. I'm sure you can guess what style I'm most interested in, but I'd start with that as the partimenti stuff I mentioned in my previous comment will very easily apply to the Baroque style.
@@TheUnknown14 just checked out your most recent partimenti pieces and it's all very interesting stuff! I'm going to go through the resources you put in your description when I get a chance and I'll definitely listen to the pieces you have recommended. Thanks for the assistance!
@@oscarllywelyn Great! Ask any questions on there if you have any, there's also an email in my about page too, so use that if you want. Good luck!
