    If you wanna get real fancy, you can make your own yaki-ire medium (Japanese-style clay tempering) out of a mixture of forge scale, clay, very fine stone powder, and unicorn tears (water works too).
    I think you can use Satanite as well, if you're feeling devilish.

    Looking Beautiful like always Denis. Glad to see those clips being done on your grinder, as you know I use my homemade grinder all the way to thousand grit before buffing. Im surprised you do alot of hand sanding, but I know you feel each knife needs handwork, so I can Appreciate that outlook too. Those hamons turned out great, I use wire because I use coal, but also helps the clay to stay on when cracking in the quench. Also your accidental oil ecth is going to be a new addition to knifemakers all over, myself included. Doing some inverted feathers these days, no time for videos for now, too much work around the house. What were the horizontal lines caused by on the hamon knives? Deep sanding scratches?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They aren’t scratches, it was sanded to 1500 before it was etched. I spoke to Jerrod we think it was etched a bit too long. He’s had this happen before and it’s likely the grain direction of the steel. Thanks for watching

    Beautiful knives... question ? What shape and size. Would make a great camp / bushcraft/ hunting knife ? That as a thick spine and good square edges for using a fire starter. I see a real trend in people using the knife to chop (wood) and use a piece of wood to hit the blade and split wood with it. I suppose strength wise that is a good feature. But I prefer to use a hatchet for those chores and a axe naturally for larger logs. So is there a size and shape / style. That you would consider as a great combination for camp , hunting and bushcraft ?

    • @krissteel4074
      @krissteel4074 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a leaf out of an old bushman George Washington Sears who in the 1800's basically 'made' the outdoor recreational activity in the day. He would take a small hatchet, a Nessmuk fixed blade and a small folding knife. that tended to over the vast majority of activity revolving around wood prep, cleaning animals, general camping stuff and cooking in the field.
      Basically, don't baton knives into wood, its dangerous and not only can you get sharp bits of metal in your eye, you end up with a broken knife most of the time or it stuck in a log- which isn't an ideal situation if you're out in the bush with a tool broken.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks

Were you using the oil and powder polish in that direction? Maybe a finer compound is needed? I wouldn't know but am curious.

    That’s a lot of hand sanding. I hate sanding. I end up causing myself more work a lot of times trying to do more on the slack belt on the grinder. Sometimes it helps but not very often. • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not quite sure in your question. Dipping etched blades in mineral oil just coats them with oil for protection. Even Damascus blades do well with some mineral oil. If you mean oil-etching a Damascus blade, I think the pattern will get muddied.

    hey brother i have a question....why not make handle heavy blades . everyone i see make blade heavy knives .WHY? why not have a handle heavy knife?... the more handle heavy the more scientifically and martialiarts-ly and weildable, you can make it and have it the better... sooooooooooooooooooooooo why?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      We aren’t making “blade heavy” or “handle heavy”, we try to make balanced knives. Unless your making a chopper, which you definitely want blade heavy. It’s very rare you want a knife that heavy in the hand rather than balanced.

    • @ricksmit2239
      @ricksmit2239 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TyrellKnifeworks Yeah balanced. but balanced to where? as i have made a few knives before and the blade was always heavy. if i drilled wholes out the blade would have become more heavy. shifting balance to blade side. i've seen almost everyone that make a a full tang knife drill holes in and i knew why but i never understood the reasoning, as perfectly balanced blades handle the best. and if the balance is shifted to a little into the handle than even better...i never understood. maybe it is just me that feel that way. anyway. i love your Bowies. your designs always intrigue .

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ricksmit2239 the balance should typically be right before the ricasso. Drilling weight reduction homes should not be automatic, it should be thought through. Another option is to do a tapered tang for weight reduction. I typically do weight reduction for hunting knives where the handle is the same length as the blade and after you add scales, it’s handle heavy.

    • @ricksmit2239
      @ricksmit2239 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TyrellKnifeworks yeah. knives can go both ways... i will just want a sword with handle heavy wieldability. add waaay more control. but i guess with knives its all up to the smith huh?. id however always go for perfect balance(balances on your finger on top of the guard or just before it on the blade.) or a lil handle heavy. depending on the blades function...i guess hunting knives need to be a little blade heavy as the weight allows sturdier and cleaner cuts through the meat and skin.😁
