      I am not a traditional HD buyer. I'm currently on the XSR900 and have had several sport bikes in the past. But this is the first HD in a long time that has caught my attention as it seems to be a way to bridge the gap as I shift from sport bikes into cruisers.

  • @rider14mcd63
    @rider14mcd63 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I own one and love it. I pulled the clip ons as far back as they could go, put on some passenger pegs and can go through a tank of fuel with no problem. The power is very nice, torque comes on early for real world use. I have had 2 VRods, this bike has its power down way lower, making it much more practical and its ability to corner is far superior to the VRod. I purchased mine for 2k off the MSRP. I disagree with it being a "novelty" bike. I guess if you compare the touring ability to a Streetglide or Roadglide, but the description of novelty/nitch is off. The people comparing performance to a sport bike I wonder if they have ever driven a Harley? Affordability, we buy what's in our budget. At 21k I doubt HD has any pipe dream this will be a beginner bike. I have found it a great ride one does not see on every corner, and the power right where it's most useful for the street.

    I agree with Andrew below. I thought HD was trying to appeal to younger riders but not at that price!!!

    • @KurNorock
      @KurNorock 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There are plenty of younger people that could afford that bike. Keep in mind, by younger, they aren't talking about 18-24. They are talking about 18-45.
      Hell I'm 39 and I'm sick and tired of the classic (ancient) look of most cruisers. They all look the same and they all look like they were made in 1965.
      That's part of the reason why I bought a 2014 valkyrie. It doesn't look like something I inherited from my grandfather.

    The FXDR doesn’t come close to the power of the V-Rod.
    Went to Demo Days and took one for a ride and my 16 V-Rod Muscle is way quicker than this bike.
    I like the looks and wanted it to be @ least as fast, but I’ll wait for the next Harley sport crossover & enjoy the Muscle until then!

      Maybe with some personal touches it’s actual potential could come out. Something tells me this was put together to try and get the newbies into Harley and some of em shouldn’t ride a rocket of a muscle bike

      @Russell Racey FXDR handles better than a V-Rod and rods are ugly with the exception of the last generation muscle.

      "unoriginal air cooled push rod big twin" oh contraire, that engine is all original HD and can be much easily modified as well as easy to work on.BUT---For 20k the bike SHOULD be pushing more than 92hp, not that it can't produce more and could probably be done for a lot less then modifying V-Rod motor.

    Nice review I rode one last weekend did 250 miles over 2 days. I agree with many of your comments. Did vibrate lots on a country road at higher speeds. Cornering and lean angle is good. It is just not as comfortable as my sportglide for long distances. Thanks for the review.

  • @K9RickRet

    The FXDR is kinda like Harley’s “crossover” model...taking the spot vacated by the V-Rod and laying the foundation for new models to follow over the next few years. Time will tell if H-D is able to hit the price point for new models to come to be competitive in that market...as $21 grand certainly won’t do it!

    I think your assessment is spot on. It's a cool bike but a novelty because it's basically a drag bike. Most HD riders wouldn't want to tour on it, and it's pretty expensive and unconventional for a cruiser.

    Great review, i just got home from test riding one at my local Dealer. Its a very sweet bike but you're right now that I watched your review. I think its more of a novelty bike as well. That power is awesome the handling is ok but I couldnt see riding it for any long distances. Plus there is no rear seat or footpegs for a passenger. I was this close to picking this bike up today but I'm glad I didnt. The price is still a little high I think to. But thanks for confirming my thoughts on the bike. I guess I'm still looking.

    That bike is the past. Its a stop gap between the VRod and the torque coming from the electrics. Bikes like the XDiavel will eat its lunch at a similar pricepoint. Old old old. But the good news is - Harley has great things coming! The real HD future looks amazing.

    • @westmowgli
      @westmowgli 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So true. The FXDR really doesn't bring the performance chops. It may impress ex HD bagger riders with its prowess but anyone coming from a VRod or any of the other makers' standards or muscle cruisers will be sorely disappointed. Really looking forward to the LiveWire

    • @HillslamsMirror
      @HillslamsMirror 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed. I have an XDiavel S and the 240 rear does not stop it from taking a lean angle, holding it, or fast transitioning. Test rode one of these and its much better geometry than other harley's like my brother's softail, but its a pig compared to my Ducati. The 240 really shouldn't give you any standing up problems in a turn. Thats for aftermarket big wheel kits. HD just needs to sort out the geometry. Lets see what they do with the Livewire. This FXDR is a swing and a miss.

    Im Angel I had a 1998 CBR 900 RR now I have a 2014 V Rod Muscle, what I did on my CBR I can do on my V Rod, the V Rod is a very responsive bike, it does what you think, simply it's a 700 pound CBR. IN 4 years I've tought busa's, 1000s, ZX 14s, how to ride when they challenged me and traffic was barely there. Comparing it to a CBR 900 RR with a big weight difference, that speaks for itself.

    in 2018 Harley changed the forward controls to the "relaxed forward" as standard. I would also say that at 6'2" with 34" inseam, the FXDR was very comfortable for me. I rode the 114 fatbob right after for comparison. I preferred the bars of the FXDR and the seat of the fatbob due to the greater tailbone support. if you fit the fxdr seat it really supports your backside evenly and was comfy. the fly screen does help at freeway speeds to s surprising amount. you just have to watch your right thigh when you stop or the head can heat up your leg really quick... over all I would take a fatbob over the FXDR, I really do not see 3-4 grand more bike, they ride almost identical. only real difference I found was you ride ON the FXDR and you ride IN the fatbob.

      Give the Sport Glide a bit more lean angle and the 114 motor and you might really be onto something there. It is much more comfortable than either of the other 2, and still has their inverted cartridge fork and upgraded rear shock. It is just hampered by its 29 degree lean angle.

I hated the seating position, and with the fat tire and rake, it fights you in the corner and the flick-ability is not great at all. @@nicodemus7784 I can't speak for new Fatbobs, haven't tried those yet, I had an 08 Dyna fatbob. The FXDR feels planted and has a good lean angle. So in longer sweeping corners, yes it will feel nice and planted, but I definitely felt that rake and fat rear tire. Took the FXDR on the BRC course flat top behind the dealership and did some of the lower speed maneuvering. I felt like the bike fell very short in that arena. Again, it's just my opinion/experience and basing that off of the bikes I have owned in the past/present. Everyone else may feel different and that's all good.

    • @nicodemus7784
      @nicodemus7784 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had ridden the 2018 fatbob after it came out and two weekends ago I went to a demo day and rode the fxdr and fatbob back to back. the wheel base on the fatbob is shorter and the rake is steeper, but both bikes generally felt the same. I found their steering inputs to be minimal and light. now this could be that I like the a bike to be just barely on the resistant side to turning, but I would never say that either fought me in a corner. I like an almost neutral feel but if I relax my arms I want the bike to stand back up and track straight, if that makes sense? I came from sport bikes and I am new to riding Harleys, I never liked them until I started seeing the changes they have been making the last couple of years.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the lean angle is relative to what your used to. I've ridden both the FXDR and M109R (the closest metric equivalent) and both bikes felt quite similar. The Suzuki was a bit more eager to lean, but both bikes are more limited by peg clearance, both bikes could lean a lot more than their pegs will allow. The Suzuki is definitely a fair bit faster with its extra 35hp. As for point of view. I normally ride a Kawasaki Versys, which has a LOT more lean angle than any cruiser, so any cruiser feels like it has no lean angle to me. I caught boot heel a couple of times on the FXDR and dragged peg on the Suzuki several times on the test rides.

    Harley has such a potential motor design with sportster evo i don't know why they dont make variants of that engine. Can you imagine a 107'' sportster derived engine. They do with with every other engine.

    It is definitely an excellent platform for a motorcycle, Harley engineers need to fix the foot placement, overly large rear tire, seat, huge air intake, wind deflection system, the ergonomics in general.

      that is the beauty of opinions.... my only real complaint was the price tag. I found nothing wrong with the seat, intake, fly screen or ergos. the rear tire is wider than it needs to be but it doesn't hurt it either. 6'2" with 34" inseam, fits me just fine. price tag and getting a really warm leg at a stop light were my only dings on it. I prefer the fatbob.

      they ride almost the exact same IMO. Only difference is in seats, bars, gas tank.... that's about it. only feel difference I would say is you ride ON a FXDR and you ride IN a fatbob. and the fly screen does provide some wind protection at freeway speed on the FXDR. but I do not see 3-4 grand more bike in the FXDR, not sure how HD came up with that price. so unless you just hate the fatbob looks, there isn't really a reason to buy the FXDR unless you just want to be one of the only ones around.

    I definitely like the Fat Boy better... still has the same aggressive-looking rear tire but with a wider front tire which I think helps balance the bike a little bit better. And has the same motor. But has a better riding position and floorboards which make a big difference in my opinion for comfort.
    I drove a 2018 Fat Bob about a month ago and it was a very fun and it was easy to throw around into corners.

    I'm 53 yrs old and I'm coming from a sportsbike/trackdays background. I hvnt ridden a motorcycle 10 yrs. I'm not really looking at getting back into race bikes in particular but I might be looking at getting back into bikes in general. I'm retiring in another yr and was looking at different bikes. And this video came across my feed. So I went today to look at the FXDR and I have to tell you. I was impressed at HD for at least trying to go after a different Demographic. I think they need to do that if they want to stay in business and relevant. I'm at a different point in my life now were dragging my knee or ripping 130mph power wheelies is not my thing anymore. Believe me it's hard for me to give HD any kudos cause I've disliked HD and Ducati for over 30 yrs. I've been riding sportbikes since the mid 80s, but I'm actually considering buying this bike in a year or so. Great video!

    So having ridden it myself. Motor is decent, but needs about 30 more hp, chassis handles well ... until the pegs touch down, same problem as the M109, the chassis wants to lean more than the pegs will allow. The cons, too expensive, and the bars are too low, creates a "human taco" riding position which is as uncomfortable as a super sport, first thing I would do to this bike after pitching the ugly stock muffler is install a bar riser.

    Took this bad boy ... the brand new FXDR for a test Ride last Sunday afternoon...
    My Review:
    It’s very light! Has a lot of carbon fibre in it to make it feel like a sport bike.
    It had the 114 long stroke engine in it and all the tourque is at the bottom of the power band, However this may be ok for someone who only rides Harley, for me I found it very counter-intuitive as the power hits immediately when you put it in gear and quickly fades causing much handlebar vibration and jerky-ness. I have a Vrod and even its engine had plenty of rev and a much longer power band. But this bike feels a lot lighter and more nimble then the heavier Vrod even with its wide back tire it corners nicely with good lean and you’re able to literally rocket in and out of tight spots in traffic.
    More of the Downs: the seating position is too Harley Cruiser like and not aggressive enough and there is nothing holding you in the seat when throw down the power. Your left holding the Handle bars and controls for dear life. The air box looks tacky and thankfully on this one I rode it’s been modded out as you can see...
    The back signal lights and license bracket looks lame also. I hate to think what their other design options were. The display readout is digital and very hard to see.
    Finally this bike is WAY overpriced.
    Sticker is over 28,000.00 and you can quit easily get a better Bike from BMW for example or others for $10,000.00 less. Your basically paying for the name and riding a bike that shows glimpses of being awesome but held back by its engine and design flaws in my opinion.

    Finally, a FXDR test ride in the curves !! Thank you. Excellent job of putting this bike thru it's paces. I have to agree, it seems like a novelty bike. As an old guy that still likes to play in the curves, this bike intrigues me. Seems like a bar change and replacing the forwards with mids, this could provide a lot of grins and giggles up here on top of the Cascades. Could I wrangle 22k of fun out of this thing? Hmmm …….. maybe? Maybe not?

      If you live in mountain/canyon country you probably don't want a cruiser anyway, but this is at least comparable to the M109 if a tad slower (why can't Harley build a 130hp big twin). I've ridden the FXDR and M109R and they are probably the most fun you can have in the corners on a cruiser which you can currently buy, a Yamaha Warrior still has a lot more lean angle than these and they are pretty cheap on the used market if you want the best cruiser for twisty roads.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I would still stick with a naked bike or sport tourer or even an ADV bike for riding in mountain/canyon country.

    I just saw an ad for this bike so I came to YT to check it out....I'm mid-30s, didn't start riding until ~32. This FXDR is sexy. I like aggressive, modern styling and naked bikes. My current bike has a V-Twin engine. But I also live in Japan. My bike is a 250cc that I bought used for $2,500, and it weighs ~350 lbs. There is no way in Hell I would ever pay $20k+ for a 660lb bike that sounds like it's uncomfortable to ride and not THAT agile (I mostly do short city commuting or Sunday morning aggressive rides in the hills). To my eye it just does nothing that a Yamaha Bolt or Suzuki M109 can't do for $10k cheaper. Hell if I really wanted a cruiser I would get a Honda Rebel 500 for $7,500 total.
    This bike is styled for Millennials but priced for Baby Boomers....maybe I just don't understand HD's "market".

      If you researched this bike along with all the other new Softails you'd know they fixed the heat issues with an oil cooler and kept the counter-balancer for the vibrations. It's not a dyna.

    • @nicodemus7784
      @nicodemus7784 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Dragonfly9307 yeah, the vibration is a joke now thanks to the counter-balancers, I love it. I am new to Harleys despite growing up outside Milwaukee. the oil cooler does keep the heat lower but the shape of tank, seat and location thereof can still focus some heat to the rider, but this will also vary person to person. the rear right head can touch your thigh if you are not careful at a stop, it will get your attention pretty quick. I found the seat to be wide and comfortable but I prefer the fatbob seat over it, the fatbob seat is more plush and while it is a bit narrow the rear bolster supports the tailbone really well. funny thing to me is how people keep bitching about "being folded into a pretzel", I am 6'2" with a 34" inseam, I liked the position. but I cant even ride a low rider or street bob because my knees are in my chest with the mids they come with. Harley used to be the big guy bikes and now the short guys are getting angry when a new bike doesn't fit them, lol.

    Nice video, makes me want to go hunting lol! I really wanted to like this bike and considered buying it until I rode it. Harley continues to do the same thing with this bike as they did with the V-Rods...That stupid taco riding position is absolutely terrible, foot kept slipping off the peg, cant even use the power due to a compromised position on the bike. I ended up going with the 114 Harley Fat Bob as it is a better riding position, but they really need to start putting proper mid-controls on the performance cruiser line where your not sitting on your tailbone, think Ducati Diavel. This would alleviate pressure on the lower back and would allow the rider to lean forward a little bit at higher interstate speeds, making it more comfortable for longer rides. The Harley Bonx is gonna be my next bike!

    This bike appears to be designed for a media splash to show H-D is serious about its new "Many Roads to H-D" and "100 bikes in 10 years strategy. It wasn't designed to sell many units but act as a stop gap to get the media excited, ease stock holder fears, and get customers in the door to see something radically different from H-D. Consider this a first generation platform for future innovations to come. IMO, it will take three or four generations to get the concept worked out for these pure performance machines.

The paint and finish will stilll look brand new. Bike will still feel solid. Dont complain u get what u pay for. Also its nice knowing some little kid isnt being overworked in a dungeon in some other country putting my bike together. Most of this bikes built here. Helps people out at the harley plant it came from. Softtails are still made in the good old usa. I ride an old evo softtail custom thats nearly thirty years old. Dont let the youtube harley hate bandwagoners make u think all harley guys hate this bike. This one does not. Think its awesome. Id change the license plate and tailight assembly. Other than that i wouldnt change much. May get one who knows. I alreadt got three bikes. Have to get rid of one. Only thing stoppung me from buying the wraith harley. Thats what i call this bike. Looks so cool.

    I want to hear a review from someone that is not a biased Harley fanboy. Someone that is into riding all types of motorcycles and isn't a one make rider. I'm really curious about this bike but so far the reviews I've seen have all been from hardcore H-D loyalists.

      Anyone who has any common sense about other brands would never go near HD. This thing is 10 grand more than its worth. Suzuki M109R. Ducati Xdiavel. Triumph Rocket 3. Are much better options for performance.

    It is definitely a hybrid bike. Looks like a V-Rod, Breakout and Softail put together to appeal to a new breed. However at 21K probably about 3K overpriced for where it fits in most peoples universe. Good idea to attract more riders that aren't Harleys "core" customer but missed it o pricing for a "novelty bike". I would probably trade my 13 softail in on a street bob and keep my 18 Ultra for touring. If I feel like I need a vibration fix I roll out my 01 1200 Sporty

    Ryan, how did you make that aerial footage? Where did you get a helicopter?

      That's one of many professional video gear items we use here at Law Abiding Biker. It's a sUAV (film drone) we utilize for aerial film shots.

    The comment about more wind on bikes without fairings equals shorter freeway rides I find amusing. I would rather be on a “naked” bike than my Electra Glide since it forces all the air to two places: my head and my knees. I do hear this comment frequently about wind fatigue but I just haven’t experienced it that way.

      Just rode a 10 day 13 stated 4600 mile cross-counrty trip. Trust me, anyone riding this bike would not be able to hang. Short ride sure. Lunch rides etc.

    0 to 60 on a ramp going down hill is easy for most bikes. The 114 has a sump pump problem it will drop oil pressure and blow the motor. Harley is addressing the problem. The bike is governed for 125. I don't feel that is a good thing.

    • @mrindianascott
      @mrindianascott 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's not a sump pump problem that was in 2017 with a 107 and it was on 1% of the bikes.

    • @icebrakernh
      @icebrakernh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it was a problem ask Adam Sandoval on his 2017 114 M8. it happened to many of them I had 8 friends who had the same problem with theirs and 1 of them was a 2018. I dont think Harley is as honest as they use to be.

    I do understand Harleys dilemma and how they want to appeal to the younger rider. But come on $21,000? How many younger people can afford to pay that kind of coin for a very confused motorcycle. I truly do love Harley Davidson but I would never consider this bike over my 2017 Low Rider S. It came stock with the 110(1801cc) screaming eagle power plant, abs brakes, premium ride suspension and an attitude that true Harley enthusiasts have grown to love. I payed $17,000 for my Low Rider S and it has already gone up in value by almost $2000.00.

    Quite a departure, is that Harley starting to copy Ducati??? Either way it is good to push the boundaries to improve the breed.

    • @icebrakernh

      Ducati is a fast bike this bike he's test riding is like a moped next to the Ducati tops out at 125 then the red limiter kicks in.

      The X Diavel is a super sport compared to this thing, not even in the same league. Though the FXDR is probably less likely to break, X Diavels are unreliable by even Ducati standards.

    Around 4.5 sec 0 to 60 ....can almost keep up with my stock Yamaha Roadliner, at least it's in the ballpark, but it's even uglier than my bike! I think I'll keep my Yamaha.

    You know they say it mostly for the new generation of young adults who are going to like this more better. There are plenty of old classic harley davidson it time for a new generation that fits in the 20 first century and this Cruiser REALLY DOES!! I'm 20 I like classic but notice all HD look mostly the same. So giving it a sporty type cruiser is for people my age and 5 year above and under. Just like the ducati diavelx nice and sporty, comfortable and are own comfort of style.

    Looks good, performs well, but it's a lot of money for something you can't ride all day on. Not for me but it would be great as a second bike for short commutes and around town. I imagine the local Starbucks parking lots will see their fair share of these... Great video, Ryan. How was the Pearl Jam concert?

      I saw no reason why I could not ride an FXDR all day. I think the issue people are finding is it comes out of the box setup for taller riders. I am 6'2" with a 34" inseam and I found it quite comfortable. that said, I would not buy one. the fatbob rides almost identical and costs 3-4 grand less.
