The 2004-2006 XL1200c sportsters come from the factory with Buell heads, 512 cam, and bee hive springs making 80-90hp and 80 ft lbs. Decently fast and fun. The Ducati makes your wallet cry afterwards with every single service that costs 1000$ plus, and then everytime you want to do some aftermarket parts or upgrades you cry even more at that 2000$ exhaust, and when the Ducati breaks down, you have to have to towed to the ducati dealer where they charge you so much more money than reasonable to keep your ducati bike running. Duc may be a faster bike, but they break down way more often, and cost you a fortune to fix. The harley you can fix at home with regular tools, and get parts really fast, and skip the dealer bullshittery if you want.
Here in the US I haven’t seen too many on the road. It’s out of the norm for the traditional Harley buyer and I think it will suffer the same fate as the V-Rod and Buell. Most dealers focus on the traditional Harley models. The Road King, Road Glide, Ultra etc. V-rods and Buells were largely ignored and shoved over into a corner of the showroom. I suspect because the salespeople either A) didn’t understand or care about these different bikes or B) they couldn’t load them up with thousands of dollars worth of chrome doo dads, thereby increasing their commission on the sale. I think this model will suffer the same fate. It’s not good enough to steal away buyers from the Ducati Diavel, the Triumph Rocket 3 or even the Yamaha V-Max. The traditional HD buyer will not give it a second look and non Harley fans will probably ignore it altogether. P.S. There’s a You Tuber HD fanboy in Florida who sold his Dyna Low Rider S and bought this bike a few months ago. He uses his bike for daily travel. Last week he traded it in for the new Low Rider S. Draw your own conclusions.
That's Blockhead. He bought the FXDR last year and could trade the newly bought Low Rider S next year for something else. Gives him new subjects for videos each year. In a couple weeks (nov 16?) he and Ms Blockhead are hosting the Florida Motorcycle Meet "FLMM" at the Orlando Ace Cafe. I've liked the odd bikes. FXDR, Fat Bob, Street Rod (current and Vrod original), Rocker, XR 1200, LiveWire, the upcoming liquid cooled models. Of course I'm a Buell owner so I'm used to being considered odd.
I used to have a 2008 Night Rod Special and had it tricked out with diamond black collection grips, pegs, etc. I had the vivid black/mirage orange pearl color scheme and I even had a black two-into-one Thunderheader exhaust system. Had it Dyno'd out and it was pushing 140 hp with 120 rear-wheel HP. Ended up trading it on a 2013 Ducati 1199S...biggest mistake I ever made. Back to your original point, I feel the reason the VROD and similar bikes like it bit the dust is because of all these old school Harley riders who think what makes a Harley a Harley is a bike that weighs 900-lb, pushes out a max of 70HP, and costs $30k. Harley messed up big time when they discontinued the VROD. That 1250cc Revolution engine collaboration with Porsche was one of, if not THE best engine Harley ever produced.
This reminds me of when I test rode a Harley 17 years ago and unfortunately not much has changed. They're still massively overpriced and under performing compared to their rivals in just about every way apart from perhaps the image (in some peoples view). Amazes me how they survive really. Unsurprisingly I didn't buy one.
In the Netherlands the FXDR first cost you 29500,00 euro's now you can buy him for 23750,00 euro's. I don't see much FXDR riding in the Netherlands. I did a demo ride on the FXDR and the sitting position is horrible for my length. After twenty minutes i bought it back to the dealer saying that it was not my cup of tea.
I personally like motorcycles with no or minimal gizmos.. Easier to maintain, and less of a hassle.. I would expect FXDR to be even more deprived of electronic parts..😀
I had a good ride on my mates one,it looks cool i think and thats about it.Its heavy, slow, uncomfortable and has terrible lean angle and costs a shitload.
My 2016 VRSCDX Night Rod will pull 100 mph in second gear. No short shifting needed. I rode XL models as my main for over 40 years. I am the "red headed stepchild" in Harley circles. They do offer a 117 cu in version of the FXDR, however, I bet it is more of the same. I will wait a few years and the FXDR models will be collecting dust on the showroom floor like the V Rod. Oh well, Harley will have ultimately spent less money developing the FX platform into a muscle cruiser, than further evolving the VRSC for it's next generation. Oh well, there may be hope with the new Rocket 3.
You boys are still totally missing the point, Harley's are for the experience, your sp triple does not have the same feeling, and who really cares who is fastest, remember jay leno never rides his jet powered bike and it goes 300mph.
I never had too many bikes, a 650 Maxim, Eleven Hundred Special, a 850 Commando, a 1200 Sportster, a GL1500 GW, and my 1450 Dyna is the fastest bike I’ve had. With forward controls it is difficult to keep your feet on the foot pegs if I do a 0-60.
I had a night rod ,rode it like I stole ,and if was fast and reliable .This looks the part but I would not buy one it's tooo heavy and expensive .Lads you can keep my subscription for all your hard work on your channel .
This review is spot on. Harley dropped another heavy, overpriced and underpowered model, in a world of tight competition from Triumph and most notably Ducati. I went to see the fxdr before I bought my XDiavel S, sticking with the latter was the easiest decision I've had to make.
Harley made a HUGE mistake when they discontinued the VROD lineup all because of the people out there who continue to think that a $30k, 900-lb, 70 HP bike is what makes a Harley a Harley. That 1250cc Revolution engine was a work of art and quite possibly the best engine Harley has ever produced. I'm still to this day kicking myself in the a** for having ever traded my 2008 Night Rod Special on a flippin' Ducati.
Random unrelated question. Are you guys ever worried a lion or two might show up and attack you while sitting on the bikes on the side of the road like that?
Same ol' Harley. Too bad. I've been waiting for them to evolve into a company that can make something that can perform like my Diavel. I'd gladly buy American if HD made something competitive.
LOL! I have ridden an FXDR on the street and not a race track! It does not turn as easy as that film makes out it does!!!! In fact, the only muscle in it is the muscle you need to throw it around a corner. My Victory Octane easily out handles and out muscles the FXDR!
You got to give it to Harley, they have to push the world their customers "live in" and request for upgrades, its how they sell em in America.... Harleys are cool once you add upgrading dollars.
We all know it doesn’t rain in South Africa. LOL It seems that a lot of their bikes are $10k-$12k overpriced, including the Livewire electric bike and CVO Street Glide.
FTR scout is faster, lighter by almost 80kg,1/3 cheaper, better made, stops better and is more comfortable and even has full electronics package and a large full colour tft screen that you can actaully read lol
The "Revolution" should have killed the "Evolution". But no; the majority Old schoolers flamed superior engineering just to cling to tradition and stay in the bone age. I own 2 V-ROD Muscles (pure pleasure!): I give a ride for anything else!
You didn't address resale.... diavels devalue at a rate similar to other bikes. A HD will hold it's value relatively well... Obviously there are cheap people who like to overpay too.
POOR-SHUH...Say it with me, Por-sche...Now all together...Porsche. Not Poorsh. As far as the HD...Yaaaaaawn. Do Harleys not work in the rain? I know all the HD Riders at my work don’t...I figured that was because they’re all turds that rack up the miles on the weekends late spring till Late summer😆 Meanwhile, my Triumph ScramblerXE 1200 will never know what “Put away for the winter”, even here in the PNW...but I digress...one more time...Porsche. Did I hear right?, 300k for that!! are we talking rupee's here??. Sorry just looked through the description, didn't realize you're based in South Africa. I happened upon your channel by chance 20mins ago after seeing a modified fxdr (Which really caught my eye) from Geelong HD, if you haven't seen it check it out. Too much expensive upgrading required to get to the hidden bike, sad to say 🤔😕
I would love to know who would walk past a Vmax, Diavel and Rocket to get to this. Even an Intruder was a much better bike and that was out 15 years ago.
@@JpOcDenver the Diavel would be ok, but that XDiaval with the feet forward would break your back in no time. I believe there is an option to move them back, but then it is the Diavel. The XDiavel is a show bike that go fly down a drag strip with that launch control.
Hug awa I disagree. The XDiavel with mid controls doesn’t make it a Diavel. They are different bikes in more ways than the footpeg placement. I recommend the video Schaaf did riding the XDiavel through the mountains. There’s no doubt the XDiavel sacrifices some comfort for “coolness” but it is still a very capable motorcycle, albeit very slightly less so than the Diavel.

Hey, Harley are diversifying and trying to attract new buyers with their Livewire and the upcoming Streetfighter and Pan America. None too soon, considering how their existing customer base is aging. Best of luck to them. Maybe there'll come a time when Harley are no longer known for producing fashion accessories and actually make some functional machinery. In the mean time its over priced, over weight, under performing steel man bags for over weight, under performing men.
Yes it’s an appealing motorbike , but the V-ROD was a better performing and was better in all aspects of riding, the FDXR I believe won’t make the 15 year run the V-ROD had !!!
American manufacturers ( cars, motorcycles ) do not have a taste or a clue how to build. In aviation however, it is beyond my understanding how it happened that military and civil aircrafts dominate the market !
I mean it's a Harley you only buy it if your hardcore Harley or the looks. Performance is meh as all Harley's almost everything beats it. The sad thing is Harley is still not selling bikes. This thing is like 20k in the USA really?!? That much? Not surprised Harley makes merch no motorcycles
This model looks a poor piece, but the new Low Rider S and Fat Bob seem to be proper motorbikes, based on the reviews I have seen... Polaris burying Victory was the shame for the American market... they just couldn’t overcome that Harley “community” on this side of the pond... I know, as I live on the east coast of FL and the coastal highway (A1A) looks like an HD parade on any given week-end... one likes what one likes and no offense to the Harley flock, but I am quite content to continue to thrash around on my 2014 Jackpot and 2017 Thunderbird Storm... a finer pair of “misfits” you’ll not find...

splodge 57 He said the bike was dirty from riding in the rain. They just didn’t do the usual video shots because of the rain.
@@rzu7120 watching the video it amounts to the same thing to me..he didn't ride the bike. Still pulled off a great review tho.
I love this bike but it’s simply slow. They need to get porsche to build them their motor. Harley does not make fast bikes.
Exactly 💯. That 1250 Revolution engine collaboration with Porsche was probably one of the best engines Harley has ever produced.
I wish Septics wouldn't say "chassy" but "shassy" because you know, it's a French word!
Nigel Tabb mispronounce PORSCHE also !! Just sayin
We all know it doesn’t rain in South Africa. LOL It seems that a lot of their bikes are $10k-$12k overpriced, including the Livewire electric bike and CVO Street Glide.
The big chunk of plastic / mud guard behind the seat ruins the look though.
how is it compared to the Indian Scout?
FTR scout is faster, lighter by almost 80kg,1/3 cheaper, better made, stops better and is more comfortable and even has full electronics package and a large full colour tft screen that you can actaully read lol
good review chaps, I was liking it, until the end, now No thank you
Good and honest review ! Harley force people to buy an expencive bike and bone stock looks. Force people to spend more $$$$
The "Revolution" should have killed the "Evolution".
Triumph Bobber. Better looking and probably faster too.
Two syllables. Ride on!🤘🏾
Did I hear right?, 300k for that!! are we talking rupee's here??.
Sorry just looked through the description, didn't realize you're based in South Africa. I happened upon your channel by chance 20mins ago after seeing a modified fxdr (Which really caught my eye) from Geelong HD, if you haven't seen it check it out. This is what the fxdr should be like coming out of the factory. Looking at this standard one I wouldn't blow my nose at it!!. Too much expensive upgrading required to get to the hidden bike, sad to say 🤔😕
I would love to know who would walk past a Vmax, Diavel and Rocket to get to this. Even an Intruder was a much better bike and that was out 15 years ago.
Couldn't ride like that it would destroy my back !
Man... I think I want an XDiavel... 🤪
as uncomfortable as that Harley, but they look sweet
Hug awa There’s no way that’s true if you put the mid controls on the Duc.
@@JpOcDenver I agree with your comments, I was simply commenting on comfort... for me, comfort is the major reason for my purchase, as I do 8, 10 & 12 hr days. I know someone who bought a 2017 XDiavel and he put 325 km on, and traded it in on a new Harley... out of the pot, into the fire :) To be honest, I almost bought the XDiavel, as it looks so amazing bought I went with the comfort king, BMW R1200RT.
Love it.
This model misses the mark on so many levels ! HD should be ashamed about this product! At the HD dealerships, customers continuously walk by and ignore this model ! To bad, so sad, they suck !!!
Can't wait to read these comments lol
I want to love Harley's too, but they're just not that good when compared to other bikes available.
I love my FXDR, it has a look like no other, the “Stance” alone draws attention. The motor is a Beast, the torque is massive, #KAG2020 👍🇺🇸
torque doesnt mean much without hp to back it up
NEW ZEALAND TRAILRIDING
How fast do you rally want to go ,?? Now you being in New Zealand 🇳🇿 I guess all you need to do is out run Sheep, we here in the USA , we’ll I own two bikes, if I want to go fast , I use my BMW S1000R, if I want to cruise in Style, at 80-90 MPH, or 25 on the Blvd. Then I use my FXDR, 🇺🇸👍, #KAG2020
@FXDR-S1000R Eli C. There you go.
Brilliant!
I'll take my beautiful yellow vrscse2 over a new fxdr any day.
I like it!
Harley davidson are so guilty of trying to reinvent the wheel. Sorry Willie g the wheel has been around a lot longer than you.
FXDR and Breakout are now finished,..no more
Correct...I don't believe it, cause u d idnt ride it cause of rain...lol
I concur
Those welds are a joke, I expect cheap bikes to have weld splatter not a top end bike.
Evo v Mustang, Evo wins, but I'd rather have the Mustang.
for 300K I could get 4 different, decent bikes for that, I could even build a better one. Save the money get a used Gold wing
Cos a gold wing is just like this bike.....ummmm no.. but otherwise I agree.. :)
I don't think vrods shame was the liquid cooler it was the fake gas tank air box if anything nobody's talking about that hun hun?
They could do better, the fit and finish should be near perfect on this bike. It does look good, but not for me.
I'll find the equivalent Indian if I really want to buy such a bike.
But only got 85 horsepower
More junk from HD. The best thing to come out of HD, was Buell (if you have the same acquired taste that I have), and we all know HD did to Buell.
Indian is Polaris, says it all, i guess
I own one and forget about comfort, the clips on are too far...I'm 6.1
