Beauty and the Beast scene comparison - Why reusing dialogue doesn’t always work.

  • If people are going to change up characters and story points they can’t always reuse dialogue from the original movie they’re remaking.
    By changing the Beasts character it completely throws off the dialogue in this scene. And by changing certain story points earlier in the movie some of the lines in this scene aren’t even applicable.
    I just can’t believe a movie with this big of a budget and so much talent behind it just copy and pasted this scene without considering what it meant for the characters and movie.
    Beauty and the Beast is property of the Walt Disney Company.
    The footage and images featured in the video were for critical review, which are protected under the Fair Use laws of the United States Copyright act of 1976.

    This is the best! Look at the Beast’s facial expressions in the original when he thinks he’s got her and she fires back and then he has to think of a comeback. I also liked that in the original she immediately thanked him for saving her life. ❤️

    The live action one flubs it up with the Beast. In the animated movie he's kind of just an angry kid who is good at heart. The live action tried to build up the Belle/Beast romance as based on having things in common, like dead mothers and being book snobs. Him snarking about her interests in Shakespeare plays is not endearing like seeing him become a nicer person through Belle's patience. It overall feels so much more shallow in the live action despite them trying desperately to make them look more compatible.

    Great video, I hate the fact the the Belle of the remake is a liar. The original Belle is an excellent role model for girls.

    It also makes me mad that in the live action remake, Belle just leaves the Beast instead of staying with him for a long period of time. And also when she didn't thank him immediately for saving her life. I mean, Belle did eventually thank the Beast, but she could've done it when she first takes care of him

      That’s one part of the movie that really irritates me. Belle waits sooo long to thank him for saving her life, until after they sing Something There. It really sets the movie and their relationship back.

    In the original movie, when the scene end, they're both on the same page, they're equals and have a peaceful dynamic at the end. The viewers also get the cozy feeling with the fireplace being lit up, the coloristic of the scene and how they ended up remaining close to one another. Compared to the live action where it felt like a cold bucket of water being thrown at us. At the end, he completely turns his back and doesn't looks back at Belle anymore wich is like him shutting her down and she just leaves while scolding him again while looking at him like she's angry and can't stand him. Belle also seems really scared of him while comfronting the Beast compared to the original where she's only angry and irritated because of how the beast is angry but she has quick comebacks and is witty and when the Beast stopped shouting at her and calms himself, she returns to being more peaceful and continues to takes care of him.

    I remember the last bit in another review talking about romantic chemistry. In the animated film, she may have disliked him, but she knows he saved her, so she was "thanking" him and showing trust. In the live action, she just turns away with that remark, like she wanted to give up. It's just sad

    Thank you! I have literally been saying this all the time. Just because it’s the same dialogue doesn’t mean it’s going to hit the same beats as the original. I felt the same way for the Aladdin remake especially with ‘do you trust me’. Like when Aladdin says it again before a Whole new World you get that look from jasmine (she’s figuring it out) but the remake there’s nothing.

    Until now, I never noticed the inconsistency between keeping the line "If you hadn't frightened me, I wouldn't have run away!" and Belle's new secret plan to escape from the start. Thanks for pointing that out, because it is annoying! As for their coldly turning away from each other instead of finally connecting at the end of the dialogue, I understand what the filmmakers were trying to do. As soon as the Beast is asleep, Belle asks the servants why they care about him anyway, and then they reveal everything to her: the fact that he was once human, the newly-added tragic backstory of his mother's death and his cruel father, and everything about the curse except, of course, how to break it. This dramatic reveal is what makes the remake's Belle finally gain sympathy for the Beast, which leads him to gradually warm up to her in turn. But that's a completely different story than what the animated version tells. If the remake wanted to tell a different story, it probably should have had entirely different dialogue.

    4:31 this is not Emma Watson (I can't call her Belle because she ISN'T) being a liar , this is a copy /paste of a dialogue that doesn't fit anymore in this garbage . OK , now Belle is a progressive woman and she tries to escape , so then CHANGE THE SCRIPT . That's why this remake instead of fixing plot holes creates new ones and more complicated !
    I am now sure Bill Condon and Emma Watson (she made some changes in the plot to make this "progressive" Belle) didn't watch the original movie scene by scene , the just read the plot in a Wikipedia page and that's it

      Probably where a lot of the criticisms of older Disney movies comes from.

    I wonder if they changed it because they didn't want Belle to be in a visually/metaphorically lower position. Having Beast lying in bed gives more power to Emma Watson's Belle instead of them taking the first step towards equality or at least seeing eye to eye, which the animated film shows so wonderfully.
    And to go further, I feel like maybe the writers or director or even the studio didn't want to have the Beast yell at Belle. It almost feels like he was too aggressive or masculine in that scene so they had to neuter him for the remake.

    • @ihavetoletyougo
      @ihavetoletyougo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yes! Also when Belle is being chased by the wolves in the original, she falls down. But that doesn’t happen in the remake because Emma’s Belle can’t be seen as vulnerable in any way, shape, or form.

      Ironically, that's the beauty of the original. Despite Beast appearing bigger, simply because he's physically bigger, he then becomes smaller compared to Belle's ferocity and her refusal to stand down. Belle comes out bigger because she's being the bigger person. Notice when he pouts, he's then about the same eye level as Belle, indicating that she brought him down quite a few pegs.

    • @KendallClark-te9pf
      @KendallClark-te9pf 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I didn’t think of that. Considering how they refuse to let this version of Belle ever be wrong or have anyone have power over her, it could be true.

  • @dgurlie-0273

    I can’t agree more!
    And, dang, when you bring up that Belle did try to run away before and she promised that to her father, I completely forgot about that, so you’re right. When she says, “If you hadn’t frightened me, I wouldn’t have run away!” you are absolutely right. That was a lie.
    Belle in the live action is unrecognizable because not only does Watson not carry herself as Belle, but she doesn’t act it have the same characteristics as Belle. Belle is kind, gentle, and sticks to her promises. She doesn’t let herself be pushed around, but in a kind, kind of way; that is unless she’s being bullied, then she’ll be more assertive. Watson Belle is the wrong kind of stubborn, and maybe it’s in her acting, but this Belle comes off more like she’ll do things her way and doesn’t care and it comes off as very arrogant.

    The remake of this movie doesn't create a very convincing love story. The animated movie gives them more opportunities to evolve as characters, and to eventually fall for each other, whereas the remake gives them very little chemistry together. All the remake proves is that they're outcasts, who share a love of literature, and who aren't accepted by others, which is fine for creating more friendship moments, but it isn't enough to make them credible as a couple.

    Great analysis!
    I felt the same way about the fight scene. Part of what I liked in the original was that here she was fighting back with this admiringly scary person, which showed how incredibly brave she was and then how compassionate she was in that despite how scary this beast was, she took care of him…which in turn softened him.
    When in the new movie Belle scolded him like a little child and then despite seeing how horribly wounded he was just left cause the beast was “brooding”… I lost respect for her and honestly felt they were not meant for each other.
    So they made Belle too much of a self-righteous feminist and the beast an immature, feminine, pansy.
    That and they took out how the beast says “I love you” and had all the other characters say it for him….so at the end I thought they were just friends who kind of liked each other, not romantic partners. Lol

    I find the Belle/Beast dynamic in the live-action version far more compelling than the original. In the original, Belle's role often feels more maternal, as she guides the Beast through his behavior, tends to his wounds, and teaches him basic skills like reading and eating. This dynamic leans heavily into a mother/son relationship, which isn't as appealing to me as a viewer seeking equality in partnerships. Conversely, the newer adaptation portrays the Beast as having his own distinct personality, interests, and strengths that complement Belle's. Their relationship feels more balanced and mutual, with both characters contributing equally to their dynamic.
