      Sharks aren't as dangerous as you think they're. Sharks are very curious and that's why they were swimming next to them. You saw how one of the sharks got spooked when he put the camera underwater. Sharks have a bad rep.

    • @ArtificialSoul
      @ArtificialSoul 8 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      Solo Rider Sharks are not the demonic monsters portraited in movies like Jaws. But they are big predatory fish. When encountering humans for the first time it wants to find out if they are a prey, an enemy or something they should ignore. Their curiosity makes them dangerous for us, because fysically we are by far no match for them.
      Approaching a great white without a cage requires a lot of knowhow (understanding their body language and behaviour) and a lot of guts, because these sharks are quite unpredictable.

    As surfers, sharks go by us all the time. If you don't flail and panic they just kinda check you out, bump you maybe, and just kinda hang around sometimes because they're curious. Circling is actually a good thing, whites have to keep moving to breathe so they circle to keep looking at you but keep breathing. If you see one head straight at you at speed, that's when you have to take it seriously. Most of the time the shark is just chilling and looking for skates or fish. Discovery channel has made people paranoid. Sharks swim past me out on the surf all the time, it's their home. In Hawaii I would regularly see sharks around my feet while in the lineup, they're not frenzied killers just another animal trying to survive.

    First off, thank you for sharing this awesome moment with everyone, thank you for helping change some preconceived notions and hopefully help with conservation.
    I hope to one day appreciate great whites at any age or size some day, and not from a screen. But definitely NOT on a paddle board. I'd be on a bigger boat lol Sharks have a bad rep, they are like most predators, they're not stupid animals, there's a complex conscience - they know where they sit in the scheme of things and they know what they're capable of.
    These sharks looks small and in good condition, they must be young. That said, they can still cause plenty of damage if they wanted to. If they felt like investigating one of those paddle boards (or paddle boarders) they could cause some serious injuries. To say that these guys were in no danger at all would be really, really foolish. I'm not saying they'd attack and/or eat the paddle boarders, but if they felt like flexing some prowess or practice some skills, if they for whatever reason felt threatened or annoyed, or curious to know what those new things in the water are they have what it takes. These ones seem quite gentle and placid, just out for an equally casual swim but there's no guarantee.
    It's like here in Canada, I see people walking up to bull elk in rut and trying to pet them or hand feed them french fries because they think the elk are herbivores and therefore the elk are gentle and won't hurt them. Nope. Elk aren't out to get people either, but if they felt like it they have what it takes to fend off bigger, tougher, meaner animals than human beings.
    Bottom line, I'd be panicking, I'd probably be petrified to even put the paddle back in the water lol I think I'd be doing my best job to be invisible. "This is an amazing moment but I'd like to be home now. K thnx bye."

I surfed for about 25 years so I've seen a shark or 2 in the water with me . the only time I got scared is when I drifted into a shark feeding frenzy and didnt realize it until a couple of the sharks bumped against my board while they were feeding . that scared the hell out of me for sure . im still amazed 5 years later that I didnt get bit . I guess the good Lord was looking out for me that day . but I got the hell out when the wave came my way . and I had a couple of nice dings in my board from where they hit my board . its some wild shit I promise you

      Audfile
      Yes thank you Audrey. We are here on Huntington Beach today at the tragic death place of 2 men who "played" with Great White Sharks. Witnesses say they saw them both following the Sharks and taking underwater clips and photos until one of the Sharks pulled *Courtney* into the deep water. They then go on to say that the next man, filled with horror and disbelief, fell off of his paddle board, making him an easy meal for the two sharks. What remains of the two men's bodies are yet to be found. Back to you in the studio, Audrey.

    The coastal waters in southern California are White Shark nurseries . Juvenile Whites concentrate mostly on fish until they get to be about 8/9 ft or so, then they start adding mammals into their diet. They are super curious and could potential knock someone off the board, but if someone fell into the water that fish would have been scared shitless.

    An amazing moment but reaching out to touch it with the paddle is a dick move. That could have made the situation ugly very quickly.

      vicdmise i was wondering what he was doing too, but then i realized he has his gopro attached to the paddle. i still doubt i wouldve done that tho lol

      He wasn't touching it. He had a GoPro on the end of his paddle, so he was getting some close underwater footage.

      vicdmise why is the concept of touching a wild animal considered as a dick move?
      you know what, using the keyboard to stereotype any sorts of human interaction with animals to be a harmful to them is a dick move.

    • @vicdmise
      @vicdmise 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tony Tng Relax, Tony. No one is trying to insult animals or your love of them.
      i said it was a dick move because when you're paddleboarding with friends, unprotected, among predators, it's probably best practice to not mess with them.

    i saw some drone footage of Great whites that was filmed off the coast of california, and there are surprisingly more great white sharks just chilling about while there are alot of surfers around them they even get very close to each other but they tend to ignore the surfers.

    Harmless juvenile just like most of the sitings around here.. If you leave the allonym should be fine, all they eat at that size is fish before moving north to hunt mammals.

    • @YortOK
      @YortOK 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would go so far as to say that where juvenile Great Whites congregate, a person would be safer than normal in the water. Since the juvenile sharks stay away from the larger predatory specimens.

      I do the same. One of my surf spots in Florida a few weeks back, a place I’m in always in the water at, they pulled out about a ten foot hammerhead from the beach. I have a picture of it. But you’re right, it’s always good to just be thanking The Great Spirit all the time, checking in as you say. Brilliant. Aloha.

    Huntington Beach was our hangout when I was a kid. Senior ditch day, a group of us ditched and went to see Jaws, and then went to Huntington Beach. I swear, we saw Great White Sharks in every whitecap.

      +Courtney Hemerick lol. awesome videos my friend. keep at it n enjoy the surf life! If we dont protect these beautiful creatures of our oceans as surfers idk who will. I know people get upset for people even being next to them but sharks aren't stupid. It's the people that actually poke or screw with em n hunt for that matter. Im not saying ppl need to relax, they care, which is good, but u guys were at least respecting the physical boundaries n also spotting for other people as a light warning.

      They won't have time to react. Before they even know they're being attacked they will be missing an arm or a leg and bobbing up and down in red water. Seriously, dudes, y'all are stupid. This kind of crap would be expected from a teenager, but y'all look like grownups. Oh well. This planet is getting overpopulated. Time for another round of Darwin awards....

      Courtney Hemerick that far from ground level without scopes? Light would have just reflected off the surface and they shouldn’t see much of anything, unless they got to a higher point, something like a lifeguard post
