Great White sneaks up on Grayson Shepard in Gulf of Mexico Extended Version

- My buddies Alex Fogg, Joe Kistel and I had been filming and collecting lionfish at various sites in the Gulf southwest of St. George Island FL. We had been taking turns with Alex and Joe diving together while I dove solo. This was my third and final dive of the day on a man-made structure in 93' feet of water approximately 22 miles due south of St. Vincent Island.
The shark enters the camera's field of view at 3:48 and a moment later catches my eye. I instantly recognized it as great white and you can faintly hear me say "Oh my God". I estimate the fish was 35' or so below me. It spooked me in that it had approached from behind and had already passed me when I saw it. I watched until it swam out of sight then re-cocked my speargun which I usually unload when heading back to the boat as a safety precaution.
I glanced around looking for the shark and up at the boat to make sure the dive ladder was indeed down. I noticed a small lionfish had escaped from my bag and was swimming down and you can hear me say "oh no". The bag of lionfish was positively buoyant and it drifted into me dragging the stringer of mangroves with it. I moved it out of the way and kept scanning the water column below. My first two dives had been to 120' and I had pushed this dive at 93' to my limit of bottom time. I needed to do this safety stop to avoid the bends, so I stayed where I was while my computer counted down the required 3 minutes. I took another quick look at my boat and another at my computer which shows me at 15' below the surface.
Most sharks have a tendency to come back for another look and that's exactly what this one did. Fortunately, I was looking in the general direction when I faintly saw something that caught my eye. It was the shark about 40' away coming straight at me from below. I've had countless encounters with bulls, sandbars and a few tigers and hammerheads. Over the years, I've learned the best defense is to go on the offense and let them see that I'm not intimidated. Turning and running could trigger the predator/prey instinct, so I stood my ground aiming my speargun at its head. For a second I figured this was it and was prepared to fend it off with my gun like I have done countless times before with curious or aggressive sharks. Fortunately, for whatever reason, this one turned at about 15' away and gave me a full profile view. I say "Oh my God" again and then let out a loud sigh of relief when he turns again and heads back down. I watched until it disappeared again then decided to take my chances with decompression sickness rather than a third visit from the shark, so I skipped the remaining 2 minutes of wait time and headed to the surface and safety of the boat.
I estimate the shark was 9-10' long and at no time did it seem aggressive or anything other than curious. I'm a charter captain and I had a juvenile great white around 12' long circle my boat last year about 30 miles out around the same time the tagged great white shark named Katherine was being tracked in the Northern Gulf. I had heard other reports of random sightings and saw the news reports of the great white caught off the beach in Panama City so I knew great whites come into the Gulf. This was the first one I've ever seen while diving and this experience will make me reconsider diving in murky water with limited visibility. I'm glad we both went our separate ways fully intact and healthy, but I hope I never have to experience another encounter like that again.
That moment where your brain puts together the facts, that you just saw a giant shark, you’re stuck underwater, and you’re holding a big bag full of dead fish.
he could have used those lions fishs to feed them to the shark

That’s when they turn on their turbo and shoot straight up for the kill. I’m happy to be a land lubber.
th-cam.com/video/avFP67EIYvo/w-d-xo.html
And they can hit 25-35mph.
The stealth abilities the sharks possess are just horrifying. In the water, shark skin produces very little sound compared to bony fish with scales. A huge great white generates less noise underwater than your average salmon. Almost everything that sharks use to hunt are straight up advanced bio-weapon systems.
love this guy, he handled the situation perfectly, still did his safety stop, and hunting/collecting invasive lion fish? what a guy
Thanks! Lots of folks on here condemn me for killing fish in general while others condemn me for not shooting the shark 🤷🏼♂️
Needless to say it was one of my more thrilling dives and I feel pretty lucky the shark was just curious.
You’ll like this dive too. Turn up the volume, I get a little vocal 😁

Bob Saget, if it was a bull or Tiger shark they would completely eat a human where as a white shark attack is usually out of curiousity.
Sharks are actually attracted to boats, jumping into the water and making a splash from a boat is bound to make this predator curious.
sharks have millions of electromagnetic sensors in their nose. they can literally sense a heartbeat or a motor from miles away. It knew where he was the moment he hit the water.
I think the scariest moment isn't looking at the shark infront of you, thats simply natures beauty, it's once you're head is outa the water and you making your way back to the boat...that fear of the unknown

i was just waiting for the shark to swim up at 50km/h right through the guy’s body and breach right on top of the boat, thrashing around and mauling the other guys
I think the worst part would be seeing and then watching it disappear, knowing it's around but just outta sight. Not to mention we arent use to existing in a space where you must be vigilant below, above, side and behind you.

Damn these comments are funny 😂
To anyone who dislikes the video or comments about how he's killing those lionfish for seemingly "no reason" do some research first please. Lion fish are an invasive species that aren't native and cause havoc to the ecosystem as they eat and destroy many fish and don't have any natural predators of their own apart from humans. Notice how they don't react when the diver is near them and killing them because they're not used to predators.
@@ZatonSultan yes that's a better way of putting it, not all sharks kill lionfish however and divers are trying to train sharks to eat lionfish.
God it's fairly terrifying how the shark camouflages against the color of the water.
Those POS Lion Fish will destroy reefs and colonies of fish if not eradicated.
Humans are an invasive species.
I agree about the lionfish but the other fish hes killing fuck

I thought I was the only one
I was raised in Hawaii and I remember swimming in the pacific with my older brother, sometimes we would go so far off shore that we could no longer see the bottom. Once you get to a certain point it’s like the ground floor just drops and the water gets significantly colder and darker. We thought nothing of it at the time, but looking back it terrifies the crap out of me. Luckily we’ve never run into anything other than a small reef shark.
Did the same with my family in Aruba. But, we had fins on, so we swam really fast back to the shallow, then to the beach. Thinking back, I think, "WHAT THE HECK? WHY'D WE DO THAT??? COULD'VE GONE BAD? VERY BAD!" 🤔
Glen Turney yeah that’s exactly how I feel looking back, but we would free dive. No masks as our eyes were used to the salt water, no snorkel no fins no wet suit, just a bunch of sitting 🦆 haha
I can totally relate, I feel the same fear of how I used to swim in my youth, because I had zero clue that sharks were in my ocean. LOL I thought they were somewhere else in some far off place. We didn't have the internet back then. They are EVERYWHERE
All that typing for that story?

The creepiest thing about the sea is how that shark just disappeared from sight into the murky depths yet it could still come back in seconds, and another could come from below
Cap.Commander Shunsui or many.
bro, there was a shark in the boat the whole time. it was just sitting on one of the chairs holding a beer. no one noticed a damn thing
Luckily Great Whites are isolated hunters and don't hunt in packs. But still, with a stream line body, perfect color for camouflage, and rows upon sharp teeth, caution is absolute key.
Not surprised when he kept killing all those fish :( the shark could smell it
"Hey, uh... you gonna eat all that on your own? Can I just... whoa, whoa, whoa ok, chill. I only asked."

1: He is killing the lionfish because they are an extremely destructive invasive species, even are considered the worst invasive fish.
2: Scuba tank wish spearfishing is fine where he is(Florida) with a permit, and it's to kill the lionfish, how else is he gunna catch them at that depth?
3: The other that he killed were killed in the most humane way, while it makes people squeamish, though the eyes is a fast and painless death, especially compared to what a lot of people do, (letting them suffocate is worse). I can assume he was going to use them for something else, I don't see people getting mad when people use fish-products or something.

Sharks are actually really easy to deal with. First you should identify the type of shark. If it’s a Grizzly Shark (like the one in this video; large, brown fur, hump on back) then you’re supposed to make a lot of noise and throw handfuls of dirt in the air. If it’s a male, it’s also a good idea to make fun of its package. Sharks are very self-conscious about their genitals so if you ridicule them they will swim away fast in embarrassment. Wait, what? Some shark attacks occur after the shark gets lanced and goes wacko. I've seen video of cage divers bait GWs and pull the bait away teasing the shark. Some GW's get frustrated and attack cages munching on thick metal bars? These sharks are alot more complicated then we assume. They always seem to prefer a sneak attack from behind.
was i the only one who was really anxious watching the first 5 minutes. Like the man didn't even look up to check the surrounding water lol, could've popped up at any moment
if a shark wants you, he'll get you...no matter if youre looking around or not
The fish in front of him would've swam away quickly and in turn signal him to a threat
6:13 Imagine having the title of Lionfish Slayer
rip and spear until it is done
Cant relate
Those lion fish are incredibly destructive. Even staunch environmentalists say they need culled. Many places have no restrictions whatsoever on them in order to allow fishermen to help keep the populations in check.
@@Tekel-Upharsin I've heard some say that sharks (and/or other predators) can be trained to eat them to curb the overpopulation, is that true?
@@mrreyes5004 yep you can train wild animals. Just ask the grizzly man Timothy Treadwell he was friends with wild bears.

Omg so relatable
I’m so glad someone made a subnautica reference lol...such a great game....now if only they could fix there friggen bugs lol
With the colour of the water this shark literally just camouflages to the background. That's just nasty and creepy. HELL NOPE.
Underdog Edits I hate the mountains and lava lakes. They are unrealistic. The lava lakes because there are herbivores but no plants. And the mountains because there is no medium sized prey for the reaper

Michael Dunton Scream at 5:07.
heads up for those who don't know, those fish are nick named lion fish and are considered a pest. they dont have many predators because they are poisonous and spikey so they just eat all the food the native fish would be eating.
But who cares??
What’s the other species which got threaded onto the line through their eyes?
They're apart of nature humans are the only ones making them a problem
Kyle Patrick Uh no. Do some research. They're an aggressively invasive species that is eradicating the marine life in parts of the Atlantic because they are eating other species. They have no known predators because they are venomous. Killing them off is actually better for nature, but it's not like you would know that
@@SonicGlitchmaster1 invasive species are something that isn't native to a location how did lionfish become invasive species oh I'm so glad you asked they were brought from morons in aquariums so maybe you should do research pal
This made me realize that I never want to go in the ocean ever again
Sharks don't kill divers, because they don't look like food, as the other comment says, shark attack victims are usually surfers
Lol.. it’s scary as hell
@Fausty Roks cool, next time a great white is biting one of my mates I’ll just pat them on the head and say “there there, it’s just curious.”
Love that the boat is called “Hang On”!
Everybody gangsta till a Ghost Leviathan spawns out of nowhere
This is an eye popping experience.

This would definitely be a scary experience, but this just goes to show that sharks are not just man eating Machines that are out there to kill you. He was just peacefully swimming around him.
This was more suspenseful than any other shark film I've seen. I laughed at the name of the boat Hang On...in a situation like that!
hollywood couldn't make a more suspenseful scene
You should check out "The Reef". That shark reveal was terrifying. And its based on a true story
I like the end where he’s like “Yes, I got it! I got the proof right here” haha that’s great
Shark: "Oh what's this weird thing, maybe i'll go take a closer look..."
Shark: "Never mind, it's pointy."
It is nice to see that the Great White wasnt at all aggressive or interested in you. Makes me feel a little bit safer
Shark: **swims to a guy** "Hey there... Watcha' doin'? :3"
Guy: "WHMMMM!"
here have my like😂😂😂
Holy crap, I read that Lionfish are invasive and have become a huge problem, I didn't realize they clustered so thickly.
Good job thinning the pests.
Who are we to call another species invasive?
Gary Shaw oh stfu, Lion Fish are a actual threat. How dare he protect the ecosystem
we are more destructive to the ecosystem than any animal. and in the grand scheme of the universe. it doesn't matter. so just leave the fish alone
Gary Shaw Are you really that dense, calling humans destructive but criticizing those who actually help the environment. So what do you want? People to destroy the environment, because that's what you're defending
MrBremmer6 Oh? Then let the pets die in their cages while we humans are gone you fucking dick
why do it sound like he mw2 quickscoping the fish when he shootin em lmao

This is one hell of a comment
The sound of the skin and cartilage being penetrated by the metal, several things going crunch all at once
suu whoop to add to what na nu said it also has to do with the rubber band that is launching the spear
Who else finds it disturbing how that shark is able to just camouflage to the water. YIKES.
This is exactly one of my worst nightmares. To me Great Whites are one of the most terrifying creatures on earth
Was I the only one who found it oddly satisfying watching the guy spear those fish?
Brody C I'm a little late but no your not
Killing a innocent animal in the most cowardly way possible. Well if you find that satisfying then you are a fuckin coward!!!
Reodor Felgen from what I know, besides those 3 fish that weren't in the bag, the rest were lion fish, which could have killed an entire reef, so I guess the other three were dinner 🤷🏼♂️
Reodor Felgen oh look it's a vegan
Reodor Felgen do you understand how many living organisms there are and how many have been born and died in the past millions and millions of years. boohoo were little a grain of sand in the real world
See now, if that were me, I'd of been alright. All the shit ejected from my body would have definitely deterred that shark. Me:1 - Shark: 0
lol
😂
Lol 😁😁
lmfao
I think the shark would be pretty disgusted once it realises you're the type of person that says "would of" instead of "would have".
I would have crapped in my pants if I was this guy. The calmness and poise displayed here is truly amazing. Well done.
Props for getting rid of the invasive lionfish! You're a badass for handling that like a pro. Tip of the cap for showing divers responsible practice and neither harming the shark nor panicking.

Exactly! Imagine casually pulling yourself out of the water like this guy and not even realising a great white is charging at you from the bottom.
S P to be fair the tank adds some decent weight so you could hardly throw yourself into the boat. Sometimes taking it slow is the best way to ensure that you actually GET INTO the boat lol
