    I really love the 3.6 Pentastar. My 2015 Grand Caravan has that engine with the 6 speed transmission and it has been VERY reliable. With almost 250,00 kms (or 155,000 miles in America,) my 3.6 Caravan has held up to unforgiving Canadian temperatures and road conditions! Engine + trans is all original with nothing done but basic maintenance.

    3.6 has internally cast exhaust manifolds resulting in a a large d shape port instead of a manifold and collector. This has obvious differences in the ability to exhaust scavenge as well as large differences in the over all velocity of the gases. This is why they sound so dramatically different

  • @EricFortuneJr.
    @EricFortuneJr. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    DOHC vs SOHC: They’re two totally different engines with nothing in common. There’s many things that could determine the sound of an engine from fuel delivery to ignition timing to valve timing to crankshaft balance to the length of the exhaust manifold to the overall rigidity of the block itself. When Chrysler/Daimler engineers designed this engine they (supposedly) started with a clean sheet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was somehow based off an existing design from one of the two companies. That being said it would be theoretically impossible to make two totally different engines sound the same. The Pentastar 3.6 is a much newer design that is aimed at smooth performance and refinement whereas the 3.5 was based off models from early 90s and earlier. The 3.6 has the potential to sound pretty good and rev higher but the fuel and ignition timing are so precisely delivered that it’s just too smooth to sound like a 3.5.

    Part of the reason the 3.6 sounds different is because of the DOHC set up, the intake manifold, and most importantly the fact that the 3.6 Does NOT have traditional exhaust manifolds. On the 3.6 the exhaust manifold is cast into the heads so all the exhaust merging and scavenging is done IN THE HEAD (which is why you can't get headers) where as the 3.5 has an external exhaust manifold (the style we all know and think of) and all the exhaust merging and scavenging is done there

    The Pentastar is an interesting engiine. I remember looking at a 200 when it was debuting and being g told the new v6 would run 0-60 in 5.5. The 5.7 hemi challengers were doing it in about 5.0 at the time. And the Pentastar in the 200 was getting better fuel economy than its 4 cylinder models at the time. I hear they're planning on a turbo Pentastar to replace the 5.7 hemi sometime soon, and it's supposed to hit about 500 hp.

    I think a big part of the sound difference is the exhaust manifold. The 3.6 is all in the head casting. The 3.5 was a separate piece. On the cast iron block models I always was reminded of the old 426 street hemi manifold with a missing cylinder.

      Yea you just have to go online and find a exhaust kit for whatever car you have and it usually sounds good. Or if you have a challenger you can usually get a muffler or resonator delete and that sounds good for the challenger I’m not sure on the other 3.6 Pentastars you can still do all that to other cars but for some reason it sounds different depending on what model of car you drive.

    I work on quite a few 3.6’s in Jeep wranglers. They make good power, and they’re smooth, that’s really all I have to say, I was impressed with the power from the 3.6 in the dodge promaster I used to drive for work. But from my experience with them they have issues that turn me off of them. The valve train issues, head and cooling system issues on early engines and the ever prolific oil cooler failures are all concerns. My problem with these issues is a lot of them aren’t maintence related, it doesn’t matter how well you take care of the car when the oil cooler decides to crack at 65k, or the oil galley plugs in the heads back out at 109k. Besides that they just don’t have as much character or charm as the older v6’s it replaced. It’s more efficient, much more powerful, especially compared to the 3.7 or 3.8 v6. But I don’t really care. They’re complicated soulless engines, impressive. But just not quite my cup of tea, I’d much rather have an older 3.5, 3.7, or 3.8 v6. Most of their issues can be avoided by proper maintence, and some luck as it is a Chrysler product at the end of the day. I have seen people get good luck with 3.6’s. Saw a promaster with 600k online. But at the same time we have a 2018 wrangler with a very blown head gasket In the shop as I’m writing this comment.

    When I first looked for a exhaust set up for a friend I couldn't find headers for the 3.5 other than port match the manifold. Port and polish the heads as well. Do to he had a minor head gasket leak caught it in time before major damage. He noticed a leak let it sit for a day we tore into it heads were off sleaved the valve guides and port and polished the heads. Crammed it as well as tune and cold air intake made it a dual exhaust definitely sounds better than a honda

    I really like this channel even though I’m an import guy, I’ve watched plenty of your vids to inform myself with the domestic. That being said, I do not agree with your statement about going with a custom set up because the “bigger” companies are for the masses. There is so much R&D done to these systems and simply having an exhaust shop mig weld pipes in place of mufflers/resonators is dumb. Unless it’s a reputable shop and not just a “oil lube, transmission and exhaust” shop, I wouldn’t recommend going custom with aluminized steel and bends that cause bottlenecks. The reason people buy “big company” exhausts is for quality or bends, welds and actual testing. No disrespect to you but I just hate seeing people mess up a good car by having “custom” exhausts ruining the reputation for the car and it’s community

In fact, I got run out of one once by a guy with no teeth, combat boots, overalls and nothing else but a bushy black beard. He'd been closed for an hour and a half and came out with blood hounds. When he found me (or I found him, don't recall) he complained that they had been closed for a while but even he understood why I stuck around. From then on whenever I (and my Mopar apologist buddy) came by he reminded us of the closing time. The most interesting car we ever found was a Vespa 400 microcar stacked on the roof of a Chevy G10. The "Pentastar" V6 was a joint effort between Dialmer Benz and Chrysler when they were still under the Dialmer/Chrysler name. It was one of the last joint projects they worked on. The new V6's used in the Mercedes C and E Class are based off the same design as the Chrysler Pentastar and while you cannot do things like headders since the exhaust path is case into the head, you can do supercharging and they do respond well. The 3.0 Liter BiTurbo in my C43 (M276 Dela30 engine) came stock with 362 horsepower and with just a tune and downpipes it's now at 500.
    I do agree the 3.5 had a deeper sound and there are so many variables that impact the sound an engine makes. Bore to Stroke ratio, Cam overlap, firing order, compression, exhaust and intake configuration, it all matters.

      @IhateYoutube 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it is a great engine! I wish they would get with the times and factory super or turbo it.. They could offer this engine off the show room floor with 500 horse, but that would undercut sales of the 392's! :)

    • @pilsplease7561
      @pilsplease7561 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They wont do that, im 100% sure that they aren't going to be able to get much more out of it, the engine started life at like 250hp and they had to really work to get the 300+ out of it.
      Sure a supercharger can get between 50-70hp more but the engine doesn't really have much meat on the bone for upgrades. I can tell you they are likely going to keep the pentastar as is.

    • @IhateYoutube
      @IhateYoutube 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's more in the engine. Maybe not at it's current displacement but look at the power Mercedes is getting out of the same architecture. I'm pushing 430 to all four wheels on my C43 with a tune. Granted it's a BiTurbo but that's my point, add turbos onto the Pentastar, decrease the displacement to 3.0 liters, use forged internals and it can make a ton of reliable power. But yes I agree they likely won't be doing that!

      I drive pretty hard so I get like 24mpg, but that's not that bad really. I was getting horrendous knocking using the specified 87 octane gasoline and really poor mpg, about 12. I switched for some good quality gas at my local Mobil gas station 89 octane and am getting 24 and the knocking went away. Part of me wonders if whoever wrote the recommendations was smoking some serious shit. lol.

    I have a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4 door) with a 6 spd manual & the 3.6L. Its pretty quick for what it is. 0-60 approx 7.2 sec. Unfortunately it just seems to lack low end grunt. But it loves to rev & makes pretty good power over 2500 rpm. As for reliability, early 2012-'13 Pentastars had issues with defective left cylinder head. 2014 had an issue with the oil filter/cooler housing leaking oil all over the top of the motor. The oil would run down the back of the motor and drip onto the exhaust. My Jeep had this issue at 46k. It was a $698 repair at the dealer.

    The 3.5 sounds different because it has manifolds seperating each exhaust port. While the 3.6 has one exhaust outlet on each of the heads. I'd be willing to bet if someone designed an aftermarket stripped heads that you transfer all it's internals from and had the ability to install actual manifolds or headers, it would sound either like a 3.5 or better.
