  • Is the RAM 1500 V6 3.6L Pentastar a good engine? I review this V6 RAM engine as a Heavy Duty Mechanic and give you my opinion on if I think this engine is a good engine. I also speak about the benefits of the RAM 1500 E-Torque system on these new 3.6L Pentastar engines.
I Hope everyone is having a good Monday! I figured it was long over due that I took a good in-depth look at the v6 engine option for the RAM 1500 pick up trucks. The v6 is the base model for these trucks and RAM does sell a ton of these engines.
my my old RAM 1500 I had the 5.7L Hemi which was an awesome power plant but with the price of fuel being so high these days it would make sense for more people to be considering the more fuel efficient V6 3.6L pentastar option for these ram 1500 trucks.
Right off the bat the 3.6L pentastar v6 engine has tons of real world experience. It is extremely reliable engine. it came out in 2011 and has been around ever since. it has been the best selling engine for RAM for 6 years in a row. chryslers has made over 10,000,000 units and this engine has won many awards.
this engine was more efficient, more powerful and smaller then the previous v6 generation from chrysler. in fact the 3.6 pentastar had over 38% more horsepower then the previous generation of engine.
this pentastar has 305 horsepower and can tow up to 7,600lbs which is not bad for a base model v6.
but there are issues as well.
    1. head failures.
    - the driver side head would fail because of the valve seats getting too hot causing detonation. this issues was mainly from 2011 - 2013 but there are rumours that this is still an issue.
    2. rocker arm failures
    - rocker arm bearings were an issue and failing in the earlier model pentastar engines. from years 2011-2014 these were an issues. ram updated the bearings and the issues does seem to be resolved.
    3. coolant system issues
    - lastly there are issues with the coolant system mainly because of the sand casted heads leaving sand in the cooling system. this can clog the radiator and other cooling components.
In conclusion guys I think this engine is very reliable and will serve you well. but in terms of the application of a pick up truck it does have its place but I would much rather have the larger 5.7 hemi as the over fuel economy difference is not that dramatic whereas the power loss is pretty substantial.
I hope you guys liked the video!

I have owned 3 vehicles with the 5.7 and 3 with the 3.6. I'm just going to start by saying that I've never gotten good gas mileage on a hemi engine, partly because it's inefficient and partly because smashing the pedal on a hemi makes everyone happy. I grenaded one 5.7 and had problems with the other 2 with the cylinder deactivation. I own a 2022 ram 1500 with the 3.6 etorque and besides a problem with the battery having "physical damage" when I first got the truck it has been great. I drive it slow, get good gas mileage, tows my 7x12 trailer perfectly and it is a great work truck. I plan to own the truck for at least 6 years so I mainly bought the v6 for reliability.

Note difference of "smashing the pedal on a hemi makes everyone happy" then the "drive it slow, get good gas mileage" which shows everyone that it's not the engine in this case, but the driver.

Good video. Had/have 2 pentastar engines (13-van and 19-1500) I bought for intended use. Mostly city, weekend cottage runs and some trailer work (pulling motorbikes). Both engines were solid and I didn’t really notice any lack of power for what I was doing with them. Tried my friends Hemi, was a gas to step on the pedal and have her snap too but I don’t normally do that with my Ram. All I want was the engine to be reliable, put the key in and go and do what I need it to do (haul kids and kit) safe and sound. Now the bikes on the other hand.. that’s for the fun factor!

The rocker arm problems are normally caused by the hydraulic valve lash adjuster getting plugged up. Good way to keep this problem from occurring is to add 1 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil per quart the oil change interval. Or, you could just about a week before you're going to get your oil changed at about a half a quart sometimes a full court, cuz it's going to be a little low, of Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil and run it for about a week before you get your oil change that will keep the inside of the engine really clean. And just for Giggles, a bottle of ATF will do the same thing. Automatic transmission fluid will also help the seals stay nice and resilient.

A 3.6L dual overhead cam motor----with all the slick electronics that our engines have today---can create more than 1.3 horsepower per cubic inch without resorting to a turbo. And last a long time. Wife had a GMC Acadia that weighed almost as much as these 1500 Rams and that GMC never felt sluggish. The 3.6 RAM should feel even better with the hybrid system.

She’s a very gentle driver and just drives it around and to work. She has had one trouble code for an EVAP purge valve. I have a 3.6 Pentastar in my 2016 Chrysler 200. Had it since new. Not a lick of trouble. It is a good strong and reliable engine. As far as a full sized pick-up is concerned, I think for people who mostly use a pick-up truck like a station wagon, such as homeowners hauling something occasionally, it would be fine. If you need a truck to haul heavy loads a lot, it isn't the best choice.

Exactly, truck duty is defined by it's case use. i.e. 1500/2500/3500 Which is why many cases the heavier duty trucks overall tend to be resold overall, which proof can be seen on the market.

Just telling you that to let you know how much you lose driving a crew cab. If you absolutely need one for family then it is what it is but if you really don't need one then the effort to find and buy a standard cab is well worth it. So many people buy crew cabs that never ever use the back seats for passengers because the dealers usually only stock 4 door trucks. HEMI trucks (even a Power Wagon which I briefly drove) feel like muscle cars by comparison. If you want to really use a truck to tow move up to a 3/4 ton or higher. The 3.6 with the 8speed and 3.21 set is a much better combo for a daily commuter and tows anything you should be towing with a half ton . I think dodge did good with this combo for the majority of peoples needs. Have a blessed day.

this is honestly a great option. mild hybrid systems are far more preferable over just start stop as the hybrid part can get the vehicle moving while the engine is starting up. and using the 48v system to get it started saves the 12v crank battery from possibly going flat from usually not having enough charge time after starting the engine. great system to use on an existing platform and everyone i've talked to has enjoyed the systems.

I have a Chrysler 300 3.6 with 180k miles on it. Runs flawlessly and I easily get over 30mpg. I even push it as high as 37-38mpg. Around town I usually get about 20-25mpg, not too bad for a 4k lb car. I saw someone was mentioning the ZF transmission. The ZF is used in many forms and I think it was 3 HP ratings. 8HP45=450 hp, 8HP650? =650 hp, and one higher hp was something like 850hp. My car has the 8 speed ZF. It's an impressive engine! 300hp is nothing to be embarrassed about. The car wizard was talking up the Northstar which has like 325 and it's a V8. lol

I owned a 1997 1500 with 5.7 hemi and liked it. Now own a 2015 1500 with 3.6 and like it. Tows my fishing boat great on the highway, no engine problems. Passes on 2 lane highways just fine. A few minor issues with other things on the truck, such as foldaway side mirrors not operating properly, but overall, very happy with the 1500 and the 3.6, will likely get another soon. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this engine vs. the 5.7. One topic that you did not mention was cost of ownership; outside of the fuel cost differences. By this, I mean specifically maintenance. Assuming that the average person won't have your skill set for doing their own tune ups for example, what difference would you estimate there is between a tuneup for the 5.7 Hemi and the Pentastar. I'm imagining variables such as maintenance schedules for things such as spark plug changes, labor hours, or normal maintenance schedule parts costs. It would be great to get your take on this given your knowledge and expertise. Thanks again for really informative videos!

I would definitely rate the 3.6 a 4.5/5 stars. I bought mine brand new a year ago and have currently put 132k on it. Only thing I've had to replace is the 48V battery pack($3500), Fuel pump (1800) and we changed the spark plugs a few weeks ago. Only thing I hated most was. It took almost 6 hours to pull apart the manifold and accessories to change just 3 spark plugs on the driver side.
However, I do Long hauls with it across country. I have pulled 9600 through Arizona and CA mountains with no problem. The engine is actually made to hold a redline up hill and will hold 6k RPM and not blow up. I have been generally satisfied.

Every time an engine is failing it seems like a ticking issue. I had a 2010 Hemi 1500. 164,000 miles started getting misfire errors. We fixed those. Wasn’t aware it was known the lifters go. They went, it what actually was the misfires. Lifters shaved metal into the engine. Chrysler wouldn’t touch it. So I traded it in on a 2020 Ram Big Horn with the V6. I have enjoyed it so far. 27,000 miles after 2 years. Feels as quick as my hemi. Yes the hemi had more horsepower and can hit another level. But the pennistar with the etourqe takes off and quick. Would have been 30-60 days for a new engine from Chrysler and the same to rebuild from a separate shop. I have a business and needed a truck. Hate GM, never liked Fords I’ve driven. Tundra was changing models and it wasn’t released yet. So I bought what I like Dodge/Ram! Was planning on getting 2 more years out of that 2010 and hit close to 200,000 miles. But it didn’t happen. Loved that truck. It never in 11+ years ever left me stranded on the side of the road and I drove many many late nights. Wish I didn’t have to trade it. I’d have had it fixed. But it was the pandemic

I read the comments (some very informative) and listened to this video (very knowledgeable speaker) and here are my conclusions: for me, trailering a horse in the Sierra mountains is going to be a struggle at 7000 feet elevation even with my Brenderup trailer (1300 pounds empty, then add an 1100# Arabian) where I’ll be well within the GCWR for the Tradesman. I read one comment about the engine screaming at 4000 rpm in the mountains. That was a little scary. The speaker recommended using higher octane fuel which offsets the mpg advantage. It sounds like the V6 is for the flat lander hauling groceries. BTW, I test drove the V6 yesterday on the flat, not in the mountains, and not towing, and it was a nice truck so it is a good choice probably for the commuter. I also want 4x4 so I am not stuck on a dirt path in the mountains with my horse and trailer. I am keeping by 2005 Ram 3500 2WD (duh, why didn’t I have the sense to get 4x4 then-thought I was saving money then) for the big tows on pavement only (gooseneck horse trailer). The Ram 3500 has 95000 miles and is a beast and smooth as silk. With the 5.9L engine it pulls the 10,000#. Trailer in the mountains like a breeze running at 1,400 rpm about. Never a problem with that truck and its been to Montana and back to Cali.

There is one other known issue with the Pentastar, that being the cheap plastic oil cooler which tends to crack & fail. It's located on top of the block right down under the upper intake for some reason and thus just sits down there between the cylinder banks baking away; when it lets loose due to repeated heat cycles it can either leak oil and/or coolant externally or internally (which is not good, as oil & coolant don't mix), and is a big job labour-wise to get to. The are after-market aluminium ones that solve this problem though.

My 2019 ram 1500 with the 3.6 has had so many issues. Spent about 7 total months at the dealer getting work done. BCPM failure, had to have the e-torque batter replaced, coolant leak, transmission sensor replacement, oil leak, rear speed sensor failure. Would shut off at low speed, not to mention the A/C sucks from factory.

Did Dodge fix the ticking issue on their engines?

Are you saying a Promaster is more reliable than a Transit? for powertrain

Have you done the f150 powerboost?

So, the question begs, if I’m not towing anything, and I’m pretty much just doing city driving (I want “Real” 4WD, not the Quadra-Trac I on the new Grand Cherokee Altitude X), and I don’t plan on doing any hauling (I really want a truck because they’re super safe, and I like a lot of space), would I be dumb for getting the Hemi? I’m planning on buying a new 2023 Big Horn.

My 14 has the hemi my 17 has the 3.6. My v6 does what my hemi can do without being in the shop as much 🤷🏻‍♂️. I just don’t get that hemi rumble which I can trade for reliability

The spark plug fires before top dead center. Detonation can happen at the same time as the spark plug firing, but now two places are making pressure and not the way the engine was designed to run.

yes technically the spark plug fires before, but I didn't want to get too technical lol

The 3.6 is an okay engine, but the 5.7 hemi is definitely a better engine for a full size 4x4 truck. If you watch Fastlane truck, Stubby, their brand new 3.6 Pentastar 4x4 Ram 1500, was struggling towing 5000lbs. Now that was at 7% grade doing the world's toughest towing test the Ike gauntlet but my point is still valid. I'd say if you plan to do any sort of towing or use it as a work truck make sure you get the 5.7 Hemi option.

I saw that video. The problem was the gear ratios. They were going too fast for second and too slow for third. They had 3.21 gears. It needed the 3.55 gears. It would have gone at least 10 mph faster since it could have pulled more rpm in third.

    • @buddyphillips9790
      @buddyphillips9790 ปีที่แล้ว

@@user-tb7rn1il3q you're right they were at the top of second and the bottom of third but in my humble opinion 3.55 gears wouldn't have helped much vs the 3.21s. That's not a huge difference in gearing maybe 300 RPM at the same speed which wouldn't have been enough for that little V6... now maybe if they had like 4.11 gears it would have definitely made all the difference but that would kill fuel economy when you're not towing so much you might as well have the hemi

As long you don't do excessive idle on those hemi then you good

Stubby with a 3.21 is rated to pull around 4800lb, would be factory over 7000lb rating with the 3.55 believe it or not.

*Please Advise* I have the same truck and without towing anything or hauling any payload at all, just me in the truck my engine temp hits 3/4 within 20 seconds of any legit hill. This worries me so much I actually avoid hills if I can. I know my thermostat is opening correctly, the e-fan also works fine, I have a new RAD..What if anything could be the problem? Water pump? maybe belt not tight enough? any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I really like my 2019 with the 3.6. I average 18 mpg but I run A/T tires and the stop / start is deactivated. I notice you did not mention the largest problem - oil cooler leaks due to heat / over cranking of the oil filter cap.
