Thank you for using °C, °C is the best
Celsius is standard for computer components. Also he's from Canada.
Well for science we do all use the same systems
***** It's actually british
the us system goes into the ten thousands, meaning it can use more precise measurements
And Celsius doesn't? are you sure? I'm pretty sure they both scale fine.
Obviously this varies but a general guideline:
90 - 95 C: Sorta safe, but pushing the limit. 95 C for short periods of time (less than 1.5 hours) is perfectly fine, but if it runs that hot for several hours or longer that’s bad. It won’t instantly melt your CPU or anything but it will probably wear down parts if you let it get that hot regularly. If your CPU gets this hot or hotter, every hour you should let it cool off for 15 minutes.
80 - 90 C: the hottest “decent” operating temperature. While not great, it’s perfectly safe for 95% of CPUs to be 85 C for long periods of time. Obviously lower is still better, but you shouldn’t run into any real issues. Most components can handle a minimum of 90 - 95 C.
70 - 80 C is good. Try to stay in this range if you can. It’s not always realistic for gaming PCs to stay lower than this if it doesn’t have good airflow, but maintaining 70 - 80 C should possible even with a bad cooking setup if you crank the fans up. But if your rig has weaker fans or poor heat dispersion and it gets a bit hotter than this, it’s no big deal.
60 - 70 C: Great. A rig that can keep temps this low is really efficient and this is the ideal operating temperature. While theoretically, under 60 C would be even better, it’s just not always gonna happen with the parts currently available unless you have great airflow.
Nice info
This made me feel better lol. Playing gta 5 i get around 77-85c using msi afterburner. And slightly lower when playing fallout 4 at max settings.
There are cpus that will throttle if the max temp is reached so a sudden slow down may be a sign of overheating.
That last paragraph made me chuckle. My CPU and GPU stay under 60C during 4k 144hz gaming using a normal AIO on the GPU and 212 EVO on the CPU, both overclocked to max limit. And no, I don't live in Antarctica.
My lenovo ideapad 330 gtx 1050 i5-8300 stays under 60c when I'm playing games (57-59c) and 64-70 on apex legends. Note that it is not designed aimly for gaming and it's been a year. I haven't change my thermal paste yet, just undervolted it. Also, I live in tropical area + no ac.

In general 50-80 degrees C is ideal for almost all parts.
No, the colder the better. Lowers resistance of the components. Ideal temperature for most electronic components is -273°C. Also minimizes wear on components. Components that run colder, live longer.
For computer components you get a higher stability. There is a reason why people overclock using sub ambient methods such as dry ice, liquid nitrogen or even liquid helium.
But why would I be running my computer at -273 C?
jort93z the average person isn't going to be running their pc at -273 though.
no, of course not. But the point i am making is that 30-50°C is certainly better than 50-80°C. 50-80°C is a suitable temperature for most parts, but it is not ideal for 99% of them.
jort93z At minus 273 degrees, all molecules will stop moving, right?

I cool my AMD cards by placing them in interstellar space, no condensation and no heat issues.
I'm Not Chase Due to the lack of matter to transfer the heat to, your AMD Toaster will toast it self.
heat tranfers through radiation in empty space, outer space near the earth is at 7 celcius, so your gpu would be well cooled, heat is also released through other mechanisms in space but im no scientist
Juan P. Reynoso Well it may be 7c but... the solar rays on one side heat up to 180c and on the otherside getting no heat would go down to -150c but you are right by saying that there are other cooling mechanism and by having no environment to transfer heat, more % will exit into infrared rays
Heat transfer through radiation is rather inefficient though, so I doubt it would stay cool in space using standard equipment. Also space has a very high range of temperatures, some of which are definitely not good for hardware.
Indeed but as an example if you put the hardware in an empty space room at 5 celcius what would happen?

#HBO# yes
Im sorry but basically youre saying is look at the manufacturing temp table and BUILT IN YOUR OWN BUFFER? Im here to know what that buffer should be..
i love your Techquickies, but this is just fuckin useless
On CPUs the buffer is considered safe usually is around 20-30 below Tjmax.
he told you everything what the company thinks it'll survive and what Linus told you by build in your own buffer he meant try to keep a temp that you feel safe with but do not go over or under what the company says..... As he listed a lot of the maximum but as he said there is no real optimal temp there is only break your shit temp. You trying to answer a no real answer question build your buffer set a lower max and a lower(i mean lower as higher in temp for this) min then suggested by the company and it may just last longer.
With decent cooling you're going to hit voltage limits well before temp limits these days, so temp limits are pretty irrelevant.
When overclocking i dont bother looking at temps as ive never seen any chip ive ever overclocked (on decent cooling) in 10 yeas+ hit max temp.I do however worry about vcore, i actually measure my vcore with a DMM as software either under (real vcore above what software reports) or over (vcore is less than software reports) reports it.That being said i ran my 2d gen i7 for years @ 1.425 vcore, which is over intels max.Chips fine and runs same as it ever did.Just my 2c.
- Take the lowest manufacturer suggested temperature,
- subtract at least 10 degrees (Celsius)
- Try to have it run even cooler, keeping in mind it shouldn't be bellow room temperature
umm, my CPU gets to 140°C, I think I have a problem......
Preeeetty sure that's fahrenheit. CPUs from Earth can't reach 140ºC for a multitude of reasons... at least as far as I know.

I used to "feel" uncomfortable with it being over 60Cish, but when you think about what temperature the CPU will throttle at (closer to 100C), there isn't much reason to be scared of temps in the 70's, especially when it's only at this temperature while playing very demanding games.

No need to worry about temperature nowadays since CPU and GPU auto throttle if they reach dangerous temps, which RARELY ever happens, unless you overclock a lot, run a TON of things at once, or play at very high resolution that GPU doesn't support.

What if you keep your entire case submerged in a tank of liquid nitrogen to get rid of the air = no condensation?
Might be a bit expensive though ;)
Omnilatent I've seen a lot of pc's full of mineral oil. Nitrogen is expensive call.
Arthas Leks mineral oil probably acts as a conductor, no? nitrogen isn't that expensive, afterall 78% of air _is_ nitrogen. Also, there are already liquid N cpu coolers, but they seem to have the condensation problems mentioned. my thoughts were to put the whole system into a custom tank to eliminate these probs...

Have had a Phenom II 965 for 5-6 years and it still runs new releases (been running FO4 at 60fps on high settings). Keeping your temps below max is a good way to preserve your components, and considering CPUs don't advance much anymore, it can be a good money saving measure.

Temps are fine right now, repasted with Arctic Silver 5 and added a NZXT X61 AIO. Runs at 17C while watching TH-cam, 12C when at idle, and hit 40C on GTA 5 with high settings. The temps did give me problems while playing but that's fixed by the AIO.

Right now where I live, ambient outside temp is 29C with 67% humidity. My HD7970 runs at 40C and peaked at 72C according to Open Hardware Monitor and CAM. My next upgrade is going to be a R9 Fury X. Goal is to keep inside temps as low as possible. The Fury X is water cooled and sealed so heat won't leak out to other components.

How the hell would you even drop your temps below ambient using air cooling? You're using ambient air to cool it after all.
And if you have a water cooled setup you're obviously knowledgeable enough about super high-end builds to know that you shouldn't do it.
people that watercool overclock their cpu as well. It generates more heat that way so it cancels out the risk of below ambient temps and gets better performance because its running at a higher speed
Freddie Edwards
watercool cant go below ambient either. , unless you incorperate some sort of refrigerant heat exchanger to the loop.
and yes, you can overclock like hell. got a i5 3.5 ghz happily running at 4.8. maxes out at 55c when its working hard. =D
Peltier coolers can drop below ambient, if I recall. They were even used in some computers - the Power Macintosh 8100 series' top model used one, I think. Condensation is a risk in those too, but I don't remember hearing anything about them getting wet or breaking due to the design Apple used.
***** apple is dumber than i thought if they used a peltier in a production computer. haha
you do realize that a peltier unit turns into a very good insulator when it fails. meaning that the chip under it goes critical temp, in many cases too quickly for the thermal protection to shut down before damage is done. and they have the habit of being rather unreliable. not to mention the need to insulate the area around the CPU to prevent condensation, which just makes everything worse when the peltier burns out.
worst idea ever. lol
fakiirification Aren't they more reliable since they have no moving parts?
The computer in question was released 20 years ago and was 110 MHz, this isn't something which is going to fry the second the cooling system fails (if I recall, it was activated with a thermal sensor instead of running 100% of the the time).

You forgot to talk about motherboard temperature! Most important thing! It has to stay (ideally) below 38°C, if you want your CPU and GPU coolers to work efficiently.
This involves a power supply sucking air out of the chassis, assisted by a rear fan, ideally 92mm or bigger.
If you do not have a front fan, the chassis must have a side vent.
If your power supply is isolated, you need a top fan also.
Fire up Aida64 stability test and make sure you adjust the fan speeds so that your mobo temp stays under 38.
Plz do a more current update on temperatures with modern hardware & laptops

I have an Asus G750JS with an i7 4700HQ. While running a Prime95 Benchmark using Intel XTU, it reported that my max temp had spiked to 90C. Is that bad? I mean, it was a benchmarking with 100% CPU utilization and it ran for around 10 minutes. I'm a newcomer to the high-end PC world, so I would love some help. Also, it idles between 43-50 and when gaming it gets to around 70 give or take. Anyway, Thanks for the video though, love these and the LinusTechTips videos!
I'd say, get better cooling. Idle 43-50C is not good. Sure, I have a slower CPU, The FX-8350, but it produces more heat (Thank you, AMD (in winter)). My Noctua NH-D15 keeps the CPU running idle at AROUND 30. Sometimes lower, sometimes higher, all depends on ambient temperature.
Anyway, long story short, I recommend you to buy a better cooling component.

At 0:25, I think there may be an error with the note that says semiconductor resistance decreases with increasing temperature. Generally, semiconductor resistance is known to increase with temperature, and most MOSFET datasheets will support that. However, there may be advanced rules to consider for modern FinFET design that I am not accounting for. Generally you can look at carrier mobility as an indicator of resistance, and that curve usually has a maximum at some moderate temperature, and falls off for both extreme high and low temperatures due to the effects of lattice scattering or impurity scattering.
Lastly, one thing you did not explicitly state is that lifetime is hugely impacted by temperature. You did mention this indirectly, but perhaps a useful metric would help make your point better. In the power electronics world, the general rule of thumb is that every 10 C rise in temperature reduces lifetime by 1/2.
I've got my 980 FTW liquid cooled and it never really goes above 50 Celsius while gaming :)

My computer is 5,778K degrees is that ok? It hurts a little when i touch the bottom.
no cause kelvins isnt in degrees
I guess I will return it, well it is almost hotter than the surface of the sun...
YOU OWN A POWERBOOK TITANIUM TOOOOO!!!!! Joking. That thing ran D4/\\N hot! And that was at 667mhz, imagine the 1ghz model.
Tbh I don’t care about sound so I just use full blast on my fans 24/7 when gaming that is
Did he just sign the number 70 in ASL? Nice.
My i7 970 used to run at 70c under max load until I turned off HT (I have 6 cores, dont need HT) now my max temps are around 60c. All air cooled.
Ran a P4 prescott without the heatsink on once, once it finally booted up it was around 140c and still operating. Still works too.
It can burn houses down if it is hot enough
my gtx 780 is 120 °C ):
My 980ti never break 67c under load
Is 90 C too hot?
Kind of...
It's OK. During a heat wave my gpu got to 110°C and games ran at 10-20 fps during that heat wave. I had to massively underclock it for it to remain under 100°C and remain at 30fps
lisa lavergne
Yeah I notice that my temperatures are lower now, but should I stop playing when I get to 100C?
sebba Wizzie How many fans do you have in the PC on the case (expect the cpu,gpu and psu fans)
Which card you you have?
-CLM15-
Well, I don't know but I have a laptop and I'm told that they are really bad at temperatures.
This is my GPU:Graphics Chipset
AMD Radeon HD8970M
Thanks mr tech tip
how about northbridge / southbridge temperatures -_-?
Lehel Hanko You're probably fine up to 70 or 80C. I'm not sure, though.
***** your English needs an upgrade. AMD processors kept northbridges a long time
+Lehel Hanko You need an upgrade.. Chipsets now..
Smoking Crop there is nothing wrong with having a chipset. an fx 8350 provides decent performance and still has them.
Lehel Hanko
... chipsets are what every board has nowadays.. well, technically every board has a chipset as the definition is "all the chips/components on the board" pretty much..
What I meant actually was the "hub" that is used nowadays..
anyways.. doesn't matter much. The heatsinks on the ones that matter are more than enough or you've bought a bad board.
shaving sponsor..... what
You heard it from Linus himself. The razors at dollar shave club are f**king great razors!
This version of Linus scare me
Ah yes thank you almighty algorithm for recommending an ancient linus video
My cpu just got to 95c And I could smell something burning. Uh oh.
lol....95 grades Celsius it's safe for a R9 290X that's the best joke i ever heared xD
fetus linus
can you clip the part thats for the dollar shave club? great vid, but that part was gold lol
Im getting 84-89 is that normal
Its an gtx 1050ti
No
It's an laptop not pc
@@brs6316 90 isn't safe brother but anything below that is fine for laptop
It's no problem in your case I guess
It used to be 87 cuz my room was hot now it's like 70-83
@@Cheezer3089 but too much fan noise
Even shorter tip as fast as possible the good temps your pc can possibly reach is max 85 degree something above 90 is dangerous
I didn’t understand a word this guy said
My GPU rtx 3070 runs at 65-83 C while gaming. And during full load, it sometimes touches 83C but doesn't go beyond it as that's the GPU temp limit. As for the cpu amn ryzen 5 5600x, it's 65-90C. Last week when i was playing an emulated game(rdr1 on Xenia emulator) it touched 90, and freaked out. So i lowered the cpu settings and it's now 70-80.
I’m using a laptop 3070 and for a while before I cleaned my laptop it would be around 88c without me noticing so I don’t think I quick 90 will kill it
