I've made the move to M.2 about 6 months ago and I love my two HyperX Predator(one via PCie) it saves so much space and makes cable management breeze as I now have no SATA and power cables to mess around with.
I doubt these speeds will even be necessary in 5 years. They can't really be taken advantage of yet today. There needs to be a new super demanding application first. Maybe recording raw footage at 8K+ and super high fps.

Rusty Rivet Absolute bollox, sata power connectors are the worst thing ever, they are thin and cheap and they brake easily, they should have made a more robust connector for HDD power like a small square block. sata power connectors cannot handle the stress and weight of cables especially if you unplug frequently and move things around a lot. molex power cables are much more sturdy and don't brake.
But can you use them as your boot drive, loading your OS onto it? That would theoretically cut the time of booting up the computer by an exponential amount.
Pro tip: that other guy is probably trolling. RAM is volatile storage. Unless they made a non-volitile and not RAM storage kit that uses the RAM slot that I am not aware of yet that is... but I am pretty sure that he is trolling ya.

first of all, check your motherboard's compatibility with the m.2 bandwith. Newer versions of motherboard like z170 and x99 have support to pcie 3.0 x4. Some older versions like 1150 chipset motherboards will only have pcie 2.0 x2 m.2 support. so that means if you buy the top of the line m.2 ssd like samsung 950 pro (that supports pcie 3.0 x4) but you have an old motherboard that only support 2.0 x2 (10 gbit/s) you won't be taking the full advantage and will be having only slightly better performance than a regular sata 3 ssd speed. If you let me know your motherboard, I might be able to help you out finding a good m.2 ssd for your rig.

That's why you can SLI GPU's *and* use an M.2 PCI-E card at the same time with a CPU like a 4790k (which has 16 lanes.) SLI requires 8 PCI-E lanes/GPU, so you'd think it wouldn't work, but the chipset provides a few extras.

I hoped for a shift into a minimum of 28-lane standard for consumer chips, while X-series would boost to like 80 lanes. But I guess we have to wait for that change then.
BTW: Why aren't there any mobos that can handle both DDR3 and DDR4 memory out there? Would make for a more gentle transition into newer chipsets. E.g. my mobo can handle both DDR2 and DDR3.
Wistbacka When I say chipset lanes, I mean the chipset has its *own* seperate lanes from the CPU provided lanes. That's why you can SLI GPU's *and* use an M.2 PCI-E card at the same time with a CPU like a 4790k (which has 16 lanes.) SLI requires 8 PCI-E lanes/GPU, so you'd think it wouldn't work, but the chipset provides a few extras.

Unfortunately, these things are not made very clear on mobo-makers webpage be it ASUS, AsRock, Gigabyte or MSI... None of them really explains what is possible to combine. But everyone are super quick to mention how AMAZING M.2 is....
Wistbacka M.2 itself isn't amazing, other than being small. PCI-E M.2 is amazing, since it has much more bandwidth than SATA.

I just installed a Micro m.2 sata 3 128 in both my Ryzen machines. I have to say my 1400 and 1600 boot windows 10 in under 10 secs and my cine bench score went up. This was a good video.
