Hops help you turn the car faster, usually after a extended drift for SMT or UMT, as you can see in water park. Soft drift should mean drifting after landing from stunting on a boost pad, done by holding ZR while you're in the air after a stunt. Counter sliding means sliding to the wrong way for a tenth of a second then switch to the right way. This strategy helps accumulating mini turbo faster. And no, how far you go depends on your set's top speed and jump angle.
