So far it has done great but we only just installed it this summer and we haven’t had a big wind yet this winter. That being said, I’m not very concerned. We installed the optional snow and wind kit that provides a lot more stability. We are in Washington state by the way.
I just bought a 24' used yurt and refurbished it. It was months of work. I wish I had seen your videos before I started. You both (+helpers) did a remarkable job. WELL DONE!
Is this the only structure on your land? I would like to build a yurt on an acre over on the Oregon coast but I’m afraid that building permits may stop me
When we built it, it was the only structure on the land. We built it as an "unpermitted structure" after discussing options with the county. That meant we couldn't have permanent electrical, water or sewer to the structure and there were limitation on the height of the platform. Check with your county to see what they allow.
Hello! Me and my family are going to start a community farm with many yurts and one huge yurt for religious purposes, I tried to gather as much as I could from the video but if it isn't to much to ask what are some things that made the job a whole lot easier?
Very smart to ask these questions before trying to install. A couple of the most important ones: 1. Have more help than you think. The covers are extremely heavy. I'd say having 4-5 people would make it go pretty smoothly. 2. Use a scaffolding. I've seen people place the center ring with only using ladders, but the scaffolding make things so much easier. 3. Think about unfolding the cover first and then refolding. Ours what so stuck together it made it almost impossible to unfold. We put some baby powder between the folds to make it easier to install (the second time). 4. Platform - Use construction adhesive to secure the boards to the joists to prevent squeaks.
Love the video, thank you for sharing your journey. Can i ask for your plans on your deck? We are about to try the same thing and any guidence would be appreciated Minty thanks
While these tents are commonly referred to as Yurts...yurts have rafters which curve downwards just before the sidewall...this design with straight rafters is called a Ger. Dig holes three feet deep, put in a tire, fill with dirt, tamp well, use lag bolts to screw through the sidewall of the next tire, screwing it to the first one, repeat until you are 2 feet above grade. This will give you almost free footings that go below the frost line, which will prevent the floor buckling in the winter. Either make a mechanism which will raise the clear plexiglass dome on the roof ring, so you can vent heat when it's hot outside, or just use the cloth cover the Mongolians used for centuries. Build a Rocket Mass Heater, with the thermal mass built into the wood deck to save space, so you can heat the Ger efficiently all winter.
Any chance of asking you what the Permiting process was in your local? We have property in Hell’s Canyon and are considering a Yurt structure. Great video!! ThNks!!
We were able to put up the yurt in our county as an "unpermitted structure" as long as the platform height wasn't more than 30" high and we didn't have permanent electrical or plumbing ran to the structure.
The floor insulation was only on one side of the yurt, why was that? The roof was insulated, but the sides only showed one layer, for the walls. I was looking into Pacific Yurts earlier and the walls have more layers, including insulation. Thank you for the video, it did help me to get a better overall look at building a Yurt.
You definitely need somewhere that you can legally put it up. We already owned 5 acres of land and that is where we built our yurt. We checked in with the permitting office in our county before we purchased the yurt, as well, to make sure this kind of structure was allowed.
Gorgeous yurt! Curious about how much in materials the platform costs? I am looking at yurt kit that includes the floor kit and trying to compare. Thanks!
2 years ago it cost us about $5,000 to build the platform, I'm sure it would be significantly more today with the increased lumber prices. I'd guess $8k - $10k. This was for our 30' yurt.
Is there a reason to build a round platform for a yurt beyond the obvious? Seems like square/rectangular would be easier to build and you'd have deck space. It's a real question. I'm curious.
There might be ways to do it with a square platform but the round design ties the drip edge to the canvas. So we just followed the manufacturer’s recommendation.
I built a rectangular deck (28'x 32') for a 24' Pacific Yurt. On top of that, I built the 24' yurt platform out 2'x4' lumber (on edge), then 3/4" t&g plywood subfloor. That left 2' on the sides and 4' in front of the doors. Plenty of room for the awnings.

Hi Sara and Ryan! Thank you for sharing your journey :) Our family bought a small piece of property last year by the Hood Canal and we also considering building a yurt. I would love to touch base with you and learn more about the do's and don't! Have a Wonderfull day!
Hey there! Sara thinks she just started "following" you on FB. Give her a follow back or shoot her a friend request and then can connect farther down the road. :)
We are doing this!!!!

This is a 30' Yurt by Pacific Yurts.

You've been cheering us on from the sidelines the whole time.
