The First 5 Mods You Should Do To Your Tacoma

- It can be difficult to decide which mods to do first to your Tacoma and what order to do them in. Especially if you’re a newer Tacoma owner or looking into purchasing one. In this video I provide feedback on my experiences on what Mods I should have done first and why these 5 mods seem to be the best ones to start with.
Ceramic coating in my opinion is a waste of money, if you're going overlanding or off roading ceramic coating won't help on deep scratchers etc., ceramic coating is good paint protection if you're alway parked under the sun, not when overlanding or rock crawling, looks good on car shows etc..
Definitely not a waste.
My order was running boards, interior LEDs, pedal commander, driver side grab handle, interior black out kit.

I put hoodstruts on my 02 Taco and line X bed liner back when I bought the truck brand new in May of 2002. Excellent investment! We go to the beach a lot and I just throw chairs, board ect in the back and it takes a beating.
The blackout taco with the long bed looks incredible. Amazing work!

Paint I use washes and wax every other wash.
Well since I’m making payments for the next two years. Not going to do too much to the truck 🛻 until it’s mine, but what I felt that is a necessity was the step rails for the Wife to be able to get up in the truck , the tonneau cover to keep the luggage 🧳 and things safe in the back ice chest full of beers . And a cat cover so they don’t get stolen! Thanks for sharing

I got the OTT tune a week ago. Love it!! Had just over 60 miles on my brand new Taco at the time! Was my second "Mod" after losing the Air Dam on front. I have the Nitto Ridge Grappler tires and plan to get either the TRD Pro wheels like yours or Black Rhino Overland. Also plan to lose the side Decals of truck bed.
Right on! The tune is absolutely amazing.. blows my mind how a 5min laptop appointment completely changes the driving experience experience of the Tacoma! Yeah I didn’t like the sticker decals on the bed either.. they definitely had to go.. thanks for the update and glad the time was a success for you👍🏼

I went with a 3" front and 2" rear and 275/70/17 it has an agressive look and preforms well on the trails.The Ozarks can test truck and driver.

'23TRD Offroad LB. Did OTT(medium), interior LEDs, bed lights, LEDs in the taillights, exterior chrome delete, and power tailgate lock all before I had 100 miles. Still under 300 miles and side steps are coming tomorrow and Decked bed drawer will be here in a couple weeks. Next will be a lift but that will have to wait until mid next year.

1. Undercoat. Under body. In frame box section. In frame c section. In doors. Hinges. In tailgate. In fenders. Take out rear tail lights spray through cavity. Behind spare tire. Under hood down onto frame. Behind front grill plastic. Behind skid plates. Suspension components. Back of front brakes. Both sides of rear drum. EVERTHING but exhaust. Do exhaust hangers (If you accidently get some on exhaust it'll burn off in a few days. )
First coat.
2. Tonneau cover. Mud flaps. Running boards. Sill protectors
3. Undercoat. Under body. In frame box section. In frame c section. In doors. In tailgate. In fenders. Cavity behind tail lights again. Behind spare tire. Behind skid plates. Everything but exhaust. Behind plastic grill. Down onto frame. Around battery tray.
Second coat.
4. Bed extender
5. Undercoat. Under body. In frame box section. In frame c section. In fenders. Behind spare tire. Everything but exhaust.
Third coat.
Edit: East coast snow state by ocean taco. Soon to be self ceramic coated as many layers as i can get to stick.

Just reserved the 2023 taco trd pro ice cap! Wanted to get the last generation V6 before the 4th gen. Apart from the ceramic coating and tail lights would you recommend the OTT for the pro?
Absolutely 👍🏼 All of the V6 Tacomas come tuned the same.. the overland torque tune will radically improve your Tacoma and make it the truck it should have been from the factory.
I run a 275/70/17r on a 2” front 1” rear lift. No rubbing or trimming was needed
Okay I'm thinking of decaling mine. Bad idea or good idea? And would i do a ceramic coat before to make it all even then decal? Or decal then go over with ceramic? Seems a catch 22.
The reason I took off my decals was due to “uneven” paint fade over the course of time.. I’m also not a big “decal/sticker” guy.. nothing wrong with it and I think some people do a really nice job when decaling their trucks.. I would probably ceramic and then decal to help protect the paint.. but the question is if the ceramic would cause the decals to not stick properly.. hope that helps!

With the 2-1 lift, did you adjust the aim of your headlights?
I’ve had my taco since 2021 brand new 3 miles, now I’m up to 62K, what I have in store are, OME BP51 heavy load on the way, next I have a plan to remove the TRD pro exhaust and do a better more clean sounding 3” set up with a black widow venom 250, then my next mods will be RIPP coil packs, AFE 76mm throttle body, ANDERSON intake runner, a CAÍ compatible with a snorkel and then finally once I have my engine mods done, I will do a KDmaxx, dragon werks or OTT tune.

Factory installed rubber floor mats. Soft on the cover brand new takeoff so half the price.
Runningboards , OEM rubber bed mat,factory cargo divider. trailer ball, quick takeoff Carhart seat slips. Tint, glass break sensor. I’m not sure what’s next but I kind of want to get the TRD exhaust. Considering I live in an apartment and I also don’t like loud exhaust at this point in my life but I’m not sure if it will happen.
I didn’t realize that some Tacomas don’t come with the all weather floor mats until recently.. save your carpet ones especially if they have logos on them.. they’ll probably be worth something some day! I was looking at the TRD exhaust as well.. then realized I couldn’t get the black tipped one because it’s only made for the short bed setup..
@@westcoasttaco as far as the floor mats I’m not sure. But on the window sticker when I bought it, it said it was an installed option for 200 bucks or something. So I figured some might that’s why I listed it.
@@westcoasttaco yeah, I got the magnetic gray truck, the one that everybody pretty much has lol. But it has chrome badges and I thought about doing the black out overlays but then I noticed what you said is it chrome tips for the long bed only. So if I do the exhaust, I’ll just keep the chrome badging to kind of offset it.

@@westcoasttaco will do. I had a scion tc with the trd exhaust and before I bought it, I listen to TH-cam and it didn’t sound so good. But I bought it anyhow and I called the start up. I love listening to it on the freeway. You wouldn’t hear it at all unless you really pegged it and it was just fun. But on the Tacoma, I’m not sure if I’m going to do it or not I’m still 50-50.
Did you paint the trd skid plate if not could you send me where you purchased the skid plate appreciate it.
I did paint it.. I popped off the red lettering and just used black Herculiner in a spray can.. took about 4coats and was good to go👍🏼

Wanna get a OTT tune and a 3”/2” lift kit. Should I lift it first before getting the tune or does it matter?
I assume you plan to get larger tires as well?
@@westcoasttaco I do, but sometime in the near future. Just didn’t wanna get bigger tires before the lift and risk the rubbing and don’t want to trim away anything
@@Maatt.1 I would probably recommend getting the tune 1st if you don’t plan to do tires and lift very soon.. the problem is if you lift without doing the tires, the tires you have currently will look really small and disproportionate.. so in a perfect scenario, I would do the tires and lift all at the same time, and then do the tune immediately after..

A.c. Drip mod seems to be a thing. This really a issue? Or can you just put a preventive on the frame?
@@itsallminor6133 The mod itself came about because a tacoma user noticed rust developing on his frame in that area. With the hose being extended and rerouted, one is able to see just how much water drips out. It's actually quite surprising.

I’m currently averaging 17-20 mpg.

Where did you get the black TRD skid plate?
I painted mine black with bed liner spray. Just pop off the red letters clean the skid plate. Spray it with a few coats of Herculiner. Reattach the letters and you’re good to go! 🤙🏼

No offset. Just the stock TRD Pro wheels and 265/75/r16 BFGOODRICH KO2’s
Would the tune void your warranty?
If the warranty issue in question is caused directly by the tune, you could potentially have your warranty voided on that item. These tunes however are 99.9% undetectable by the dealership. The tuners make no guarantees or promises that tuning will uphold your vehicle's warranty, HOWEVER many of their customers have had their trucks at their local dealership with no warranty problems or issues. Make sure to use your best discretion when considering tuning your vehicle.🤙🏼 FYI: I’ll be doing a sit down interview with a tuner within the next week. Stay tuned for the Q & A.

Yeah seems to be a common issue with Tacomas across the board.
How many MPG did you lose?
I actually gained about 3-4mpg after getting the OTT.. right around 20mpg right now.

Tell you the truth the only thing I think I would do is change the tires to the truck cost enough I'm not into making my truck look like a pretty buying it cuz I'm going to use it as a which most people don't seem to do anymore the old make them look like pretty little trucks
Lol I switched mine to halogen. I can't stand long highway trips with bright white light, it's tiring. I think the whole industry should go back to halogen , these LED headlights were a mistake for America.

The purpose of this channel isn't to "persuade" anyone to do something to their Tacomas.. @westcoasttaco I agree with everything you have said. I do enjoy watching your videos, they informative and entertaining. I've heard so many horror stories about people voiding their warranties, I guess it's made me gun shy.
Why is everyone obsessed with modding a brand new truck. Considering 90% of the viewers probably have it financed. Id say all these are pretty much pointless if you don’t own it outright. Paint protection and maybe some good floor mats is about as much as I’d do
Especially if you’re most likely to upgrade in a few years but depending on your personal interests to each their own
Do not tune your truck. Some guy with a lap top does NOT know that powertrain better than the Toyota engineers that designed it. It will affect reliability long term.
So from what I’ve understood after talking with a lot of people in the industry is that everything about the way the truck is tuned and runs from the factory is due to emission regulations. It has very little to do with the engineering.. Essentially the engineers design the most capable engine possible within specs but the way it runs comes 100% down to the way the emission regulations requires it to be.. that’s why the 4cylinder turbo is coming out now.. easier to get within emission standards... they only become more strict year after year…the way the truck comes from the factory is actually harder and causes more damage to the drivetrain over a longer period of time.. the engine runs low and is always bogging down even on inclines.. the transmission is continually shifting up and down etc.. none of these characteristics are healthy for the truck.. but the government has so much control into everything including how vehicles can be tuned when sold that Toyota can only do so much..
