  • Is it possible to bring a neglected Cessna 150 back to life after sitting unused? Join me as I tackle this challenge at the Part 147 aviation maintenance school where I teach. This aircraft became a student project last semester, but unfortunately, some incorrect work left it grounded. Now, it's my turn to step in and set things right.
    In this detailed video, we'll go through the process of assessing the Cessna 150's current condition, identifying the mistakes made by students, and making the necessary repairs to get it flying again. From basic troubleshooting to more intricate fixes, I'll guide you through each step of revitalizing this classic trainer aircraft.
    Watch as we transform a classroom lesson into a practical success story, demonstrating the real-world applications of aviation maintenance education and the importance of correct procedures. This video is perfect for aviation students, instructors, and anyone interested in the mechanics of getting an airplane back in the air after an extended period of downtime.

    Love the phrase of Everything is a hammer unless it's a screwdriver. Then it's a chisel. Our phrase in A&P school was "You can fix anything with a 5 pound sledgehammer and a crowbar

    Worked on and ran engines on that exact Cessna 150 when I was going to school there back in 2007/2008. Great A&P school with awesome instructors. Glad to see they still have all the same planes there and some new ones.

      We are planning to start upgrading a lot of our training equipment after 20 years. Some of its getting pretty torn up, but same I went through the program back in 2013, and it's remarkably the same as it was.

      That is great to hear. You probably had some of the same instructors as I did as well. But I heard through one of the guys at work that just finished school there that Weaver retired. Really glad for him and it was well deserved. Hope the school has been seeing an increase in enrollment for aircraft mechanics because the field could really use it. A lot of the experience is retiring and now it's up to us to teach the next generation of mechanics

      Yeah, they are all slowly leaving, Nunnele is the only O.G. left. Cotter, Weaver, Haral, Han, Brista, Heath, and Jewell all retired. So did Ramos and Rivera years ago. It's kinda scary for us, new guys. we are taking over a legacy with enormous shoes to fill. I just hope I can live up to their knowledge

    What was the problem with the carb check valve? It sounded like it might be cross-threaded when you were trying to unscrew it.

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was just clogged, the threads had corroded due to water wich is why it didn't want to come out (the whole systemwas clogged with gunk too.). I didn't film it but I ended up having to drill it out and tap it. But I had a new carb anyway.

    Nice video! Do 150s generally start that easy?
    Mine takes a lot more cranking, sometimes up to three attempts regardless of OAT or if the engine has been running. This is not the first video I am seeing where a 150 starts so easily and I am starting to think I have an issue. I suspect it may be related to my carb. Do engines act like this if a carb is due for an overhaul?

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can get most 150s started in 2 to 4 cranks. Sometimes 1 if I primed it right. It really all comes down to how well you primed it, how strong the mags are, and the ambient temp.
      Try this next time, sump the water out a d give the primer 3 shots of fuel. Then do your preflight. The idea is all that fuel will start to evaporate and sit in the induction manifold so when your preflight is done and you hit the starter you'll have all those fuel vapors sitting in the manifold just waiting for some compression and spark.

    I know this maybe COMPLETELY random but could a Airplane mechanic become a good Auto Mechanic? I'm curious because all the research I've seen is conflicting about this. Some say you can, some say it's not really transferable because working on a airplane is much different than a car. I want to work on my own cars as well for fun in the future!

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are completely different but incredibly the same. Yes, an A&P can be a good car mechanic it's just a different mindset when it comes to troubleshooting. With that being said, I haven't taken my car to a mechanic for 14 years until recently because after you do certain things, the computer needs software...

    OK let me guess where you are working - San Antonio TX !

    OR teaching in a 147 school. Do you have problems with these days students being lazy ?

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am in San Antonio, and I do not say exactly what school I'm at for liability reasons, but I do not teach at Hallmark, and our school is a community college. That should narrow things down, lol.
      I am unfamiliar with ERAU, so I can't form an opinion on them. But I personally love it most of the "lazy" or otherwise "disinterested" students drop after their first semester, so by the time we get to Airframe and PowerPlant, the groups are pretty good. We do struggle a little bit with people showing up late and / or cutting out early, but we usually do a good job of handling it.
      I love it but I also love wrenching, which is part of why I keep my business running. With the time off that I have I am fortunate to be able to enjoy both.
