Lyrics, for anyone interested: Near Banbridge town, in the County Down One evening last July Down a bóithrín green came a sweet cailín And she smiled as she passed me by She looked so neat from her two bare feet To the sheen of her nut-brown hair Such a coaxing elf, I'd to shake myself To make sure I was standing there From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay From Galway to Dublin town No maid I've seen like the fair cailín That I met in the County Down As she onward sped I shook my head And I gazed with a feeling queer And I said, says I, to a passerby "Who's your one with the nut-brown hair?" He smiled at me, and with pride says he "She's the gem of old Ireland's crown Young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann And the star of the County Down." From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay From Galway to Dublin town No maid I've seen like the fair cailín That I met in the County Down She'd a soft brown eye and A look so sly and a smile like the rose in June And you held each note from her auburn throat As she lilted lamenting tunes At the pattern dance you'd be in a trance As she skipped through a jig or reel When her eyes she'd roll, as she'd lift your soul And your heart she would likely steal From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay From Galway to Dublin town No maid I've seen like the fair cailín That I met in the County Down At the harvest fair she'll be surely there And I'll dress my Sunday clothes With my hat cocked right and my shoes shined bright For a smile from the nut-brown Rose No horse I'll yoke, or pipe I smoke 'til the rust in my plough turn brown And a smiling bride by my own fireside Sits the star of the County Down From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay From Galway to Dublin town No maid I've seen like the fair cailín That I met in the County Down She'd a soft brown eye and A look so sly and a smile like the rose in June And you held each note from her auburn throat As she lilted lamenting tunes At the pattern dance you'd be in a trance As she skipped through a jig or reel When her eyes she'd roll, as she'd lift your soul And your heart she would likely steal From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay From Galway to Dublin town No maid I've seen like the fair cailín That I met in the County Down
It sounds great. you should really release an album with Irish traditionals. I could think of a few suggestions. the fields of athenry, whiskey in the jar, wild rover, and many many more.
@@ColmRMcGuinness so excited! I was going to suggest such an album! I’ve greatly enjoyed your work and listened to your Last Length album while building a pirate ship playhouse for my kiddos!
I know I say this every time, but I literally could not be more excited for this one. This is one of my favorite songs, but I cannot for the life of me find a version that I really love; guess it was just biding its time and waiting for the Captain of the Puffin to take it on. I'm preparing myself to be blown away!
When I was a really little girl I LOVED folk tales and mythology stories. I adored the heroines and would act out their roles. But they all were described as having “golden hair” or “raven hair,” and more often than not that was actually the defining feature of their beauty. I’ve always had brown hair that isn’t quite straight and isn’t quite curly. Boring, I thought. I am Irish on my dad’s side, but that fact had never really “come home to me” so to speak. One day my dad had this song playing (I was probably eight or nine) and it hit me that the girl in this song has brown hair, and THAT is the defining feature that makes her beautiful. I mentioned it, and my dad told me that a lot of Irish people actually look like he and I (dark hair and blue eyes). He told me that in Ireland people would think I was gorgeous. I doubt that it true lol, but it stuck with me all the same. It might sound like a silly little memory, but every time I hear this song, it reminds me of the peace, pride, and joy I have found in digging into my Irish heritage. Slán♥️
Your Dad is right, annoyingly they often are right xD Here in London you can often spot the Irish person before they give it away when they speak, they are a good looking bunch of people.
COLM. COLM. COOOOOOLMMMMMMM! Rude of you to be this talented. Multi-instrumentalist/composer/singer/all-around handsome man of many skills? I can't believe you'd shame the rest of us like this. (but please never stop!) This is one of my absolute favourite Irish folksongs, and this cover is so dang jaunty and lovely, and all of the instrument shots make my heart happy - I can't tell you what a lovely surprise this was on a Wednesday Morning.
I never get tired of this song. I've been collecting different versions of it for over 20 years now. I love the variances in verses, slight changes in words, and the order in which they're sung.
We're all big fans, but my youngest daughter adores you. She can watch your video for "Sleeping In The Cold Below" all day long and be content. I showed her this video today. She got the BIGGEST smile on her face. Thank you for being such an amazing artist. By the way, my youngest girl is named Colleen.
Ordinarily, my response is "that was lovely, great job." This one is beyond that. This song seems to exist for your voice and the accompaniment is perfect.
This is by far my favourite irish song. It wakes up some bittersweet, and sometimes painful, memories about past love but it is still my number one. I am so curious to see how you will arrange this Edit well after the premiere: I find myself coming back to this song nearly every day... By far my favourite cover, surpassing even the live version from the high kings. Awesome
In the span of about a week, cruising through your past videos and listening to the new ones, you've quickly become my favorite male vocalist. Something about your voice just resonates with me. Glad to be here.
now this is a very welcome sight, hope to see more in the future like Spancil Hill or Step It Out Mary, keep up the amazing work I got your songs across multiple of my playlists
As someone who is proud of their Irish heritage I can say that I really enjoy this a lot. I've heard many versions of this song, and your version is very unique. I hope you do more Irish and Celtic music like this.
As usual i'm late by literal weeks but... you know what? I commented a long while ago about that GOSH DARN SMILE and how contagious it actually is! And imma say it again, that's a smile of someone who genuinely enjoys their work and loves to perform. I feel like im the only person crazy enough to say this out loud like some fanboy but I feel like i got to say it anyway. Every time I see that smile, it literally improves my day by 100%. Never give up doing what you love, and hope you keep improving other people's days with your amazing vocals, that charismatic af smile and broad sweater range! 🔥
Your latest covers continue to be exceptional. And while their frequent focus on your bass makes me smile, your new, definitive versions of the old songs do set a higher bar for them. Well done!
Oh. My gosh. I did this song in my choir class one year and it was so much fun, so to wake up and see this gave me so much joy I actually did a little jig while I sang along. Stay handsome, Colm!
A version of this song, with the verses translated into German, was in my Scout songbook when I was a boy. Since then, it has jump-started a deep love of Irish folk and shanty music.
One of my favorite Irish songs. I used to listen to the High Kings' version of The Star of County Down in my parents' car on the way home from my grandparents' house late at night. please do Binks' Sake from One Piece mate! You'll get a lot of new fans!
Another one of my favourite Irish folk songs covered by Colm! Perfect Birthday gift XD Are you by any chance planning to cover any more songs in Gaelic?
Well Colm you’ve done a great job. But I have a wee challenge for ye. If you ever do a Scottish folk song you’ve got be playing the pipes, no not a pan. The pipes bagpipes
That's just awesome. I discovered your channel today and have already watched like 20 of your videos and not a single one disappointed. Keep up the good work, high quality videos are a rarity on TH-cam nowadays

Excellent as always. The Last Length is easily one of my favourite songs of all time. Some songs that come to mind I think would really suit your voice is the Jolly Roving Tar and Whores and Hounds by the Irish Rovers and The Idiot by Stan Rogers.
I would die to hear you do a cover like this of Flogging Molly's 'Another Bag of Bricks'. Their acoustic version is wonderful but I'm certain you could make it even better.

Brother Colm, it is great that you play so many instruments but on a stage you'll need other people to play those instruments so that the glory of your voice can standout as it should. You ever think of touring? Ehh if not I'd buy a cd of your greatest hits!!¡
This is one of my favorite Irish tunes, and the energy and passion you put in the tone was spectacular! Well done, Colm! Probably a long shot in the far future, but I would like to hear your version of "She Moved Through the Fair." Until then, sing on!

Not disappointed. This is incredible, and made a dreary day infinitely more cheerful. Will probably have it on repeat for like a week lol. Thankee' sir!
ahhh another favourite not heard for many a year - superbly wonderful version of an awesome song - supposed to be getting some sleep but you've put me in a dancing spirit
Bro, I don't know what to call it, but the synchronization of your voices overlapped over each other, especially at the end, was absolutely fantastic! You made me so happy just listening to it! Remember to take care of yourself, and have a happy Halloween!!!
This was great Colm! I was all set phone in hand earbuds in 5 minutes before. At 1 min before my puppy starts whining to go out. I'm like hurry my furry child! But no, he sniffed around the yard for 5 minutes which he never does! And I'm literally talking to him saying "please hurry Kronk! Colms song is live! It's live I tell you!" He was not moved by my pleas lol 😆
I was not expecting to see a five string. Normally I'll only see tenors in irish music. Always nice to see a fellow five string player. I don't play Irish music though, I'm an American bluegrass banjo player. I have dabbled a bit though.
*YOU HAVE TO DO “GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN” FOR CHRISTMAS I BEG OF YOU. MY BIRTHDAY IS CHRISTMAS EVE AND IT IS MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY SONG I BEG OF YOU*
Love this! Haven't been able to stop listening to it 🎶 I've been to County Down. My father in law is from there and he likes to say it should be called "county up and down" cause of all the hills! 😆🙄😄
Lyrics, for anyone interested:
Near Banbridge town, in the County Down
One evening last July
Down a bóithrín green came a sweet cailín
And she smiled as she passed me by
She looked so neat from her two bare feet
To the sheen of her nut-brown hair
Such a coaxing elf, I'd to shake myself
To make sure I was standing there
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down
As she onward sped I shook my head
And I gazed with a feeling queer
And I said, says I, to a passerby
"Who's your one with the nut-brown hair?"
He smiled at me, and with pride says he
"She's the gem of old Ireland's crown
Young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann
And the star of the County Down."
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down
She'd a soft brown eye and
A look so sly and a smile like the rose in June
And you held each note from her auburn throat
As she lilted lamenting tunes
At the pattern dance you'd be in a trance
As she skipped through a jig or reel
When her eyes she'd roll, as she'd lift your soul
And your heart she would likely steal
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down
At the harvest fair she'll be surely there
And I'll dress my Sunday clothes
With my hat cocked right and my shoes shined bright
For a smile from the nut-brown Rose
No horse I'll yoke, or pipe I smoke
'til the rust in my plough turn brown
And a smiling bride by my own fireside
Sits the star of the County Down
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down
She'd a soft brown eye and
A look so sly and a smile like the rose in June
And you held each note from her auburn throat
As she lilted lamenting tunes
At the pattern dance you'd be in a trance
As she skipped through a jig or reel
When her eyes she'd roll, as she'd lift your soul
And your heart she would likely steal
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down
Thanks for the lyrics

Ever heard the versions by The Orthodox Celts and the instrumental version by The Chieftains?
My personal favorite is by the Fenians, but this one is fantastic! Easily a new second favorite
Very strongly recommend checking out The High Kings' version.
They are fantastic too. I’d put them right behind this one
And I'm very fond of the Kenneth McKellar version.

But no, he sniffed around the yard for 5 minutes which he never does! And I'm literally talking to him saying "please hurry Kronk! Colms song is live! It's live I tell you!" He was not moved by my pleas lol 😆
This is one of my favorite songs and you did an amazing job on it!
Would you do Galway girl? I’d like to hear that one, ever thing you do is amazing. Though that Irish tune has a special place with me.
This song is badass and deserves a heavy version. Keep it cultural though. That would be awesome!
You should do it with Small Town Titans.
One of my favorite folk songs
Yes one of my top 10 songs I wanted to hear from colm. His star is growing each song can't wait for next song.
MY BIRTHDAY IS CHRISTMAS EVE AND IT IS MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY SONG I BEG OF YOU*
Brilliant!! Keep the traditional Irish songs coming!
some mighty fine a singing and a strumming
Love this! Haven't been able to stop listening to it 🎶
I've been to County Down. My father in law is from there and he likes to say it should be called "county up and down" cause of all the hills!
😆🙄😄
I've listened to dozens of variants of this as it's one of my favorite shanty-likes, but this is my new favorite. Colm came with a banger, as always.
Oh my god!! one of my favourite songs !! Thank you, Colm!
