To be fair, it’s our boy Colm that’ll use up the whole damn bottle. Why else would the Irishman need to sit in the water in the sun, but to keep from burning up? In any case, this collab was an absolute delight!

THAT is exactly why "folk" music is so special in my mind: it's pure. A group of talented people with simple instruments making beautiful music -- and cooling their bits in the pool. ;-) Well done. Thanks for sharing this.

Can somebody please explain to me how on earth is it possible to record such great quality audio in a live outdoor setting with no mics in view? I think my head just exploded.
Oh, and the music is adequate, of course.
I can explain this, since I’m the one who recorded it!
I was standing in the pool with a zoom recorder and a shotgun mic pointed at the band. Most of the “mixing” was done by arranging the band in the right places to get it to sound balanced in the microphone. A little cleanup, EQ, and compression in post and Bob’s your uncle.

I still think you're a wizard and this was advanced black magic. The double bass especially sounds so crisp! Apart from a little background noise, I couldn't tell this isn't a studio recording. The band is so lucky to have you!
Edit: oh, wait a minute, I just noticed the bass has a mic on it 😀 now the crispness of the bass notes makes sense!
Ah, I missed the mic hiding on that black bass... I wondered, because I'd had the same thought - if this is being captured acoustically from a single mic like it sounds, there's no way the bass is that full from all the way in the back! 🤣 Still though, massive props for the recording and mixing - it's nicely balanced and clean, while maintaining that raw, earthy feel. Bravo!
@@JoshZanders yeah, I only noticed the mic on the fourth or fifth play, it blends so well with the black bass.
Awesome sound engineering job, really! As a (very amateur) musician I believe that sound engineers don't get enough credit for their skills.
Actually fun fact, we didn’t use that mic on the bass at all, but we do use it for the live shows.
That said, I did take a DI of the bass using a cable that you can’t see thanks to the miracles of movie magic.
Ultimately, they’re all great musicians who do an excellent job of balancing themselves which makes my job very easy.

I realized that a few weeks ago! I found out that he talks about his new mic at the end of his My Mother Told Me cover, and he did a podcast with Peter Barber not too long ago. And his voice is smooth like velvet.
I heard it just the other day and just kinda paused and stared off into space and was like...Wow.
I was lucky enough to get to speak to him after the Santa Fe show. It sounds like about what you expect but also much softer. He was an absolutely stellar performer who had the entire place cracking up with laughter. Highlight of the show!
