My Robo3D printer had a dependency on a computer to supply the GCODE to the Arduino board but the problem is the computer will hang and pause and freeze during a very long print leaving imperfections and in the worst case scenario it will fail all together or the software will crash and you will loose your print and a lot of material. This Smart LCD Controller XXL solves that problem by allowing the controller to directly control the Arduino board on your 3D printer without any external computer and it can feed the gcode from a simple SD memory card. This kit comes with a 4gb memory card and you can simply use your favorite slicer program like CURA or Repetier to prepare your print then save the code to the desk and select it from the dial on the LCD screen.
You can completely control the 3D printer from the very large and bright display and you can see the text clearly from across the room which makes this thing completely awesome. It's also very inexpensive for what you get and I would rank this as the single best upgrade you can do for your Robo 3D printer!
This is a very easy upgrade to do yourself and installation is simple. Just make sure you have time to go to the hardware store to find all the little nuts and bolts you need. I improvised with hardware on hand but you will get much better results yourself if you go buy the proper hardware to assemble it.

Thank you for posting this, even though I am going to get an Ultimaker 2 down the line, I can get a Robo 3D printer for less & get into 3D printing now & start making some cool toys for my son.
I just installed it... piece of cake. I loaded a test "whistle" a few mins ago... hit print and away it went. But I have a question!! Not being a techie, there'[s a few menu items that I'm unsure of and don't want to twiddle the knob when I don't know what I'm doing.... In the "Control/Motion" area, Can you explain the "VXY Jerk", and the other settings in the "Motion" area.?????? I know it's a lot to ask, but!!!!!

Awesome! You will love it. I love how big the screen is! Make sure your printer is flashed with the latest LCD capable Marlin firmware from the forums before installing otherwise you might encounter some problems.

Rob Outshoorn it did but sadly it only worked for about 8 hours and then I'm not sure what happened. Might have been my firmware update to the Robo that isn't allowing it to interface any longer. So now I just have it sitting on the bench hoping to get a chance to figure it out.

Do you know what the advantages/disadvantages are of using this controller vs one of the smaller screen versions? Is it just screen real-estate?

did those cables work good for you? I had to make them shorter because it would not show the digits on the screen. That is why they say do not make them longer...

Yep that's what i did. I found the party through robo 3d and hot all of the specifics and went on ebay and ordered it. Not exspensive at all like $30.00. Thanks for the help though. Greatly appreciated.

Love the display. I saw a video where you showed a lot of the upgrades you printed for the robo to get it to print correctly. Maybe I missed it, but why did you get the robo in the first place since you seem so happy with your ultimaker? Is it so you can have different plastics in each so you don't have to swap filaments? Do you like to have parts printing at the same time on both? Or is it just a deep desire to collect cool stuff?
I just noticed that the ultimaker 1 does not come with a heated bed. Is that a reason you got the robo? Nice cheap heated bed printer? And you already have the ultimaker to make parts to improve the robo...

Hi, Thank you for the tutorial! I followed exactly the way you show in your video. I bought the LCD controller and installed on my Robo3D. For some reason, I don't see Z axis and extruder move controls on LCD. I can control only X and Y axis only. Do I need to update firmware?

+Kent Dyer I had the same thing Installed a few times and got no Z But got everything else, on the 5th try it worked. The only thing I did a little different was make sure my ribbon cables were very straight and not twisted / overlapping...

Print a webcam holder for the Robo 3D, like you have a holder for the Ultimaker. Also... Printing with metal is already possible on ultra high end 3d printers.

What settings are used on the LCD to move the x, y and z axis?
I am wondering if you can help me out, I am trying to print off an SD card on my robo 3d r1+ but the extruder keeps losing heat causing clogs and other grief. Did you cover that issue in one of your videos or have any suggestions to fix it?

I hooked this LCD screen to my R1 + last night with a good firmware update. I unhooked the USB, was able to heat extruder and bed and homed the extruder. It did not show my SD card (16 gb) so I attempted to reload my file to my SD. I LCD screen was frozen now and would not respond to dial changes. Not knowing what else to do I power off my machine, and restarted only to get a plain blue screen. I uploaded the firmware again and still noting. Any suggestions?

+Zach Hornberger I would advise you to send an inquiry to Robo3D for the exact part/model numbers used for their components and depending on the price, either purchase then and there or use that information to search for other suitable alternatives. From what I have read, this printer is based on a popular design, so it may just use generic components. Good luck!
Hey Buddy, nice video. Just a quick question though. If I order that Smart LCD XXL do I have to use Slic3r to create the file to print? Robo 3D came with software that is pretty nice. It would be nice if I could just create a file with the Robo 3D software and use that. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi i am having a problem. I am using a ultimaker pcd and the large smart Lcd , but everything I change on the lcd doesn´t save on the eeprom. If I turn off , no data have been stored. I enable already the lines on the arduino firmware, but still the same.

I have a question for you experts. I'm new in the 3D printing and following this channel I got a Robo 3D printer and the XXL display. All works great and I already printed many things, BUT, here we are, I have one part that I'm trying to print that stop after 7 hours. The printer seems fine but the display is losing the memory card. In fact after the printer stop, I looked at the memory card folder and the dysplay didn't show ant files. Are you aware of any time limitation that is set with this controller? thanks to all .. Max
+RC-WDS Does your Robo3D Printer have an auxiliary fan to cool off the main electronics board/controller? I suspect that it might be overheating due to the long print time.
+ARK Huynh (Arkitect) , Yes it does and i printed other parts that took longer to print than this (16hours).. so i think must be something else. I took the file and resaved several times and "NO luck" so i decided to change the design of the part that was giving me the issue and finally i was able to print it.. a mistery to me still, but at least it's working now Thanks for the suggestion

For R1 Plus owners-the one part of the connector has another on it. It goes to the built in SD. You can disconnect it!
+Techommentary I've installed the controller and it's working but the contrast is too high, any ideas? I've turned the dial on the unit all the way down but it's still too high.
I have the smaller version of this sold by RepRapDiscount that I got off of Amazon. Try turning the pot both ways and it should eventually work. If not, return it Did you buy from Printed Solid?

Josh McCullough Basically, the new versions of the R1 have a built in SD card slot. WHere you are supposed to plug the controller in, the ports are preoccupied by this new SD card slot. You have to unplug the SD card slot on the side in order to install the controller

I might do this in the future at some point but for now I'm happy with the LCD controller since I just set it and forget it. But I would like the remote monitoring capabilities and webcam features of octoprint.

with ferrite filters on both ends of the cables you can extend it with no issue
Have you done it already? Because I believe the issue was a power supply issue and the ferrite filters won't solve that.

I use rubbing alcohol, seems to work pretty well

Landon Brecheisen yes it works perfectly now - I updated firmware to a newer marlin with support for reprapdiscount but I needed to readd the u8glib library to my arduino folder (I use stable and nightly builds for different things and it wasn't in the correct arduino library)
Andreas Nicholas I have a RAMPS GADGETS3D LCD and SHIELD and can't figure out what is wrong. I am pretty sure I have a newer version of Marlin. I have not tried to download u8glib library. That is because I think it is only for the reprapdiscount LCD. The screen lights up there is only blocks and no words and when I press the button knob in it makes a beep sound.
