We meet one of the only Thai Ridgeback in the UK - Goblin, Instagram's 'The Thai Ridgeback of London' and his mum Dee-Lilly Dove Monroe and find out everything there is to know about this ancient, years old Thai breed.

I lived on koh Chang (Thailand ).I rented a house in the jungle from a Thai family who had 8 Thai ridge back dogs. they used these dogs to hunt. Definitely tough dogs, but the one thing that ruled was a cat called Wan Wan... Not one of these dogs would even think about messing with Wan Wan...

One of my friends used to have a gorgeous black Thai Ridgeback. Absolutely stunning; hands down the most beautiful, stoic dog I've seen. My friend had to be careful about who was allowed over since the dog didn't take kindly to everyone. I was fortunate enough to be accepted.
One day, I decided to check one of my hypotheses and "test" the dog. I was sitting on a couch, dog relaxing next to me. I start thinking of some anxiety-inducing things and can feel a slight panic well up inside me. I didn't say a word, didn't change my posture or anything. Within seconds, the dog picked his head up, looked at me, and growled. I immediately put those thoughts away, and the dog resumed his nap. It was mind-boggling. The slightest imperceptible change in attitude or demeanor could set the dog off. I have never met a more intuitive breed.
I'm a Thai. The dog is very fierce. It bites even family's members. But it truly loves its master.

I have scars from him over my both hands, he never attacked my father, mother or my younger sister, only me time to time. He started fight for dominance over me from my 14 to 16 years, then he stopped again. You never could touch or even walk arround his bowl / dish, lair or sratch him on wrong place without seeing his long pointy fangs and dragon like face, never saw so nightmarish and elegant dog, but he realy was big heart dog :)

My mom used to have one along with her chowchow. Even though both breed are for guarding, they have different behavior. The chow is protective and would tolerate my childish actions more than the ridgeback. The ridgeback had no nonsense vibe. I tried to play with him when I was little, and I swear he looked at me like I was an idiot.
yeah my grandpa had 3 chowchows,great dogs but aint noone was messing around with em as long as my grandpa wasnt there haha they definetely need a stong hand and every dog that passed by the house growled at by the male chowchow lol

My neighbour used to have one just like in the video, he was able to jump on an almost 2 metres wall, definitely crazy.

Being Thai and used to owned one until she recently passed away at age 14 . Have to say that I never loved a dog more. She is very loyal, very protective of their owner, their home and not overly aggressive at all. I have no problem taking her to a vet or for her to stay at dog hotel. Golum, the dog in this clip, show very similar behaviour to my dog. They will seems worried all the time outside their familiar environment and very watchful even at home. They have exceptionally high prey-drive. I had python invade my home once while my other dogs run away she just charge right in and not letting go. Therefore they are not good with other small animal or smaller dog but very loving with family. I have elderly aunt at home and we never have any issue with her being aggresive to any member of the family.
I used to have one, Momo. She was normally a loner compare to other dogs we owned during that time. Then one day my cousins were playing in our garden when a snake came near them when suddenly Momo rushed from her fave resting spot and charged into the snake, killing it. Fortunately the snake wasn’t poisonous but the event shocked everyone. Since Momo was always enjoy the time by herself, no one expect she was also guarding the house. And no one spotted that snake until Momo was fighting it.
She lived a long life, too, passing away peacefully at the age of 15.
Unlike most dogs, this dog has a extremely strong presence without looking mean. Regardless of it's gender, it's beautiful and handsome, both at the same time.
And look at how always is he on vigilance. The girls are talking, the dog is on guard, searching and detecting surrounding threats.
So glad episodes like this exist to try to persuade people who want a dog just for their appearance to think about what the full package is.. also adorable doggo :)

Absolutely! Extremely important to research this animal for sure. Im in my 60s no way would I be able to handel that dog. His eyes were piercing. Toataly focus'ed.

She was saying that people shouldn't get them just because of the looks, *without* considering the fact that they are a "high maintenance" breed requiring the right living conditions and surroundings, and an owner capable and willing to put in the time and effort needed.

yep, Thai people hardly raise this breed. They prefer Thai Bang kaew (บางแก้ว) more than Thai ridgeback.
Thats because they raise them to eat them once they are bigger, like the chinese.

I "accidentally" adopted a TRD puppy from the local shelter and was told she was a Labrador mix. As she matured I became aware that my dog was NOT a Labrador or even close. It took me several years to finally figure out what breed she really was. I feel very fortunate to have been the opportunity to know this very special breed.

Origin of the Thai ridgeback dog in Trat Province, Thailand
The Rhodesian ridgeback originated from the Thai ridgeback. In 1870, Cornelis Van Rooyen, a famous hunter at the time, crossbreed the Thai ridgeback with the Mastiff and Greyhound, after which the breed has evolved over time. eventually became a Rhodesian ridgeback.

I'm thinking the same about my rescue.... Perhaps mixed with a little terrier or lab. He's such a unique and great dog.
Once I saw your title I clicked to view right away. I love Thai ridgeback. Mine was just passed last years. She was just 11 yrs old. We were so shocked. The vet said we didn’t neutered her when very young. She was the heart of family. She was so alpha. Wanted to be only one dog in the house we tried to get another dog so she could have sister or brother but never worked. She was very excellent with kids and very so protective of the family and aware of surroundings. She was so active and stay in great shape. People always came to ask us about her how gorgeous she was. I missed my Chichi. Thanks for great video.

I encountered this breed of dog before when I was in Thailand, some years ago. They are beautiful, muscular, physical and active. They are also territorial and fiercely devoted to the handler/master. The video reminded me how incredibly beautiful this breed is.

There is definitely something about ancient breeds like these that have not been overbred that reminds you that these were once akin to wolves.
As a Thai I can confirmed this statement, our dog looks like the one that showed here, orange color, pointy ears and mean looks. He lives two house which brought us , my neighbor and I to know each other. he would walks around the block just to check things up like a stray dog, both our house have a big gate that we need to open for him. It’s just blessed to have him around. The funny part is that when we’re not sure where he is we need to call each other to check if he’s there or not😂
Maybe a whole pack of them could protect a village.

Every time I walk my TRB I get stopped constantly by people commenting on how beautiful he is..... and they are correct. He's a beauty. But, as mentioned before, they are dogs that require a lot of your time, so if they are left alone for long periods their behavior can be unbearable.

This dog is so mysterious and amazingly beautiful, I did not know that such a breed existed. To be honest any dog you own needs to take care of, and they needs to be trained. As usual episode was exciting. And the beginning like from a horror movie. Amazing thank you.
Yes any dog needs to be trained but these dogs are incredibly independent and have a very high prey drive. They don't want to work for you like a Malinois will. The lady in this video has this dog beautifully trained. But she's putting two hours a day I'm too that dog. Not many people have that time
@@Ondine107 you are correct. I and my husband work from home and live at the beach. We spend a LOT of time with our TRB. You have described them perfectly. They are not like Malinois (a breed I love). They are not particularly interested in pleasing you, but they are very loving and, like many other dogs, will protect you to their dying breath.
I have the privilege that my neighbour has the Thai ridgeback very beaitufll as we have the normal ridgeback ourselves! The Thai is super sweet he is protective but not aggressive in any shape or form!

@@sunleo6161 That is a big possibility. My TRB is 80% sweet, 20% hellhound. I am very aware of this, and am always on the alert when I walk him. It's a small price to pay for such a wonderful dog.

The Thai Ridgeback, according to my aunt's experience of owning them, is extremely very protective of his/her owner. Extremely loyal and watchful, he/she is well-known for protecting Thai homes from cobra invasion. My aunt's Thai Ridgeback had killed two cobras over the past ten years when he found the snakes lurking in my aunt's home garden, he was bitten as a result but he only had a fever because of the venom and he did not die. According to his vet, this particular breed has very strong immune system that protects them from cobra's bites. It is truly an amazing dog breed.
I agree. Have rescued several from parvo and all 4 lived with IV support and only one got to the bloody poop stage. They definetly have some sort of higher understanding as their love/loyalty is awesome.
Yep. I live in Thailand. I've heard of snakes killing them but these dogs have definitely benefitted from facing this common foe for years. Thai dogs live like cats too, most kept outdoors, they need to be. They're jungle dogs.
My grandma used to have a very cute Thai ridgeback with beautiful red coat. He looked like he was made of copper with his shiny fur. He was mostly friendly except with people who act weird (drunk people), wear black jackets or drive black cars. This breed is very smart . I remember the dog walked to get snacks from a store near the house and made my grandma paid after him😂🤣🤣. If you raise them with a lot of socialisation, they have potential to become family dogs, good with kids and strangers.
I used to own Sammy, a Thai ridgeback. He was very loyal, independent and smart, they come in many colors.

I've called at their house as part of my job, and they're always very careful to make sure that the pair of them are locked away before they open the door. I don't mind waiting 😄

An amazing dog indeed we've had a few of them when I was a kid..... I'd like to recomend to you do a BANGKAEW dog breed, it is another thai ancient dog breed which even rarer outside of Thailand they are suitable for guard dog and experiences hands only , even though they're might look very cute with their long coat and striking Marks but dont let that fools you .. ps. Love your channel

We have three generations of them. Royal Fierce Protective. Now we only have one left. Sadly we can’t keep the bloodline for more. We love them so much because they protected us all.

Wow id heard of these dogs before but didn't realise exactly what they were like. I'd love one in the future. Currently half 5 yr old rottweiler x Tibetan mastiff. Very protective but once she trusts you she will never forget you and protect you like your part of the pack. great video and such a beautiful looking dog 👍✌️

I did the nails on one back in the 90's, in Nj. She was the 1st import into the USA. To this day, she stays in my mind. Her owner was a bit of a snob. LoL She was lovely.

My ex introduced me to the Thai Ridgeback. And her dog chica is the fastest dog I've ever seen topping my old Labrador who is clocked at 45 mph up against the mustang 5.0 which would race down the street neck and neck and she would cut across the end of the street to ensure that she won the race every time she'd hear the engine coming around the corner she gear up drop everything and it would be a race to the end of the block, of course she would take the grass and tear it up at the end when she won strutting her stuff and ripping at the grass letting everyone know that she was the victor. Top dog to have and I am dedicating my free life to owning Vexaire and Voltaire which are soon to be purchased as soon as I head over to Thailand and get their papers after a nice vacation. Importing the dogs is about $1,000 more than buying them here because they have to have their papers and there are shots before entering the United States however you can chalk that extra money up as saved because you will have the option of purchasing the pups at a cheaper rate than you can buy them here which is around $3,000 a pup Plus you get a vacation out of the deal so I highly recommend going abroad if you are from the United States. We plan to get a blue and Isabel for AKA blonde and breed them. This will be my first experience breeding dogs and I plan to have TH-cam to help me. We will be documenting everything on this channel

I have dog sanctuary in Thailand and I currently have seven puppies, not 100% Ridgeback, but two are unmistakable to that of a purebred but will be smaller. I rescued their mother after she was covered in ticks and about to give birth in the woods. I know a purebred is what everyone likes but if you can find it in you, there are five boys and two girls and they have awesome personalities. They were born February 5th and usually I can go around advertising to give them away to good homes, but because of the Coronavirus lockdown I have nowhere to take them and I have 22 already from previously saving them from almost certain death. I do this all on my own and I am always scraping by and 7 more going to be so much harder as I'm already separated into three sections of my land and even then there is an occasional scuffle. I would ship it to the United States as it is very easy and I would pay for it if it wouldn't be convenient for you but it's only $300 average. If you if you would like to see the pictures or anything please let me know if not no big deal. And yes they do have done spiked fur down their back and they had beautiful silky short hair and are hyper in play and also in affection but are truly awesome, I only want them to have the best chance at a great life and although I could love them and be with them is only one of me and I have so many so many and yeah it's really sad for me but I know I know they could have more attention but they deserve because their so loyal . Thank you.

@@jamsaidemelo1367 Well, I moved here 18 years ago when I was 20 from Wisconsin. I had to bottle feed these guys and they have been by my side like 18+ hours a day since that were born so I don't really want them to go to a Thai person, as 90% of them don't go out of their way to vaccinate or give flea, dewormer, etc and I just know that within a year at least 4 won't be alive and possibly more. Even then usually low quality as most are left with parasites and never allowed indoors.
Really sad too as vets are insanely affordable and so much experience with major diseases. parvo treatment is less than $30 and if treated immediately always survive. $ 100's -$1,000's in USA and very fatal.
Mind you there are some Thais, small minority, that are great.owners. often I would find European, american retirees or residents as they have a better chance.
Thanks for your suggestion and my sister and mother will ask some of the many people they know. If not all, I will find someway to accommodate them. : )
My grandma had one of these. He literally jumped and snatched a bird mid-air. I was little, but I always fed him with bones I collected to feed him when I went over my grandma’s. My parents wouldn’t let me pet him, but I always secretly did when I deeded him. My grandma was old school so she allowed him to go out, but he would always return. One day he returned heavily bruised and our neighbors said he got jumped by a bunch of other dogs. They said he was greatly outnumbered, but he never stopped fighting. He died after that from the wounds. They are one of the most loyal dogs; and tough as a nails. I miss him every time I see one.

The history of this breed is fascinating. And thank you, once again, for being an advocate for this breed and being honest about what types of families and homes this dog would thrive in. And just because this dog is beautiful and mysterious does not mean everybody needs one like the latest, trendiest handbag. They are not an accessory to an outfit. They are living breathing creatures that should be loved and respected.

I have a Thai Ridgeback and two kids one 9 month old and the other almost 3 years old, they are totally fine together, my daughter keeps playing with him all day and he has never tired to harm her, I also have lots of people coming in and out of my house and he has never tried to bite anyone although he never stops barking at them even if he knows who they are, he even barks at me before he actually knows its me coming though, my dog acts first and thinks later.

Should do a episode on the Korean Jindo. They have a fascinating story. They are from the island of jindo. I used to have one an he was a beautiful boy, but like this dog a highly speciality dog. also were extremely rare here in the United States.
Definitely a breed for a specific person, quite a high-maintenance dog that requires serious training. This girl has done a great job training her Thai Ridgeback.
