I had a wolf hybrid that was 3/4 Timber and 1/4 Alaskan Malamute. His name was Nosferatu. I'm 6'3" and he was able to look me in the eye on his hind legs. He was the gentlest most loyal and intelligent dog I've ever owned (Going on 40 dogs over my 50 years). At the time we had 13 dogs ranging from German Shepherds, Yorkies, Labs and Nos was the biggest playmate they could have ever asked for. These dogs will always have a special place in the hearts of their owners.
Daniel Our Malamute never needed brushing. His coat was perfect. Rarely needed a bath. He wasn't truly dry for two days :o). He had no dog odor like a shorthair dog. Just his toes smelled funky sometimes.

Wow, actually a really good, informative episode not just "omg how wonderful are these dogs" but honestly talking about the good and the bad of having one of these amazing animals in your family.
This hurts to watch. Like the mental and physical pain I get not being able to be in the same room as 5 beautiful big ass fluffy dogs. Man. UPDATE: I now work at a dog daycare. It’s the best job in the world. My dream has come true. No more pain. 60+ dogs in one room with me
they are very very friendly with people. they are a dog that was mroe or less bred that humans are their pack. they have lots of energy and are very strong and will pull when leashed and they will charge at other animals in most cases. but, at home, they are just big cuddly love bugs who love everyone.
Yes they are great dogs very intelligent and loyal. Need to be trained with lots of love and attention but just like all other dogs the effort is so worth it. My daughter had a male called Spartan and he was the apple of my late wife's eye. They shared an almost telepathic relationship. God bless them bothXX
Zepiroth. So true! When I brought my Mally pup home, I Knew he was gonna end up a Big Boi (grew to 60k’s 😆), so I started training him from very early days. They are highly intelligent and so talkative, def Not great guard dogs lol.. fully trained by 6 months, walking calmly beside me etc.. so it was the Funniest thing, one day on a walk, we passed a very high fence, there was a loud bang, Luka got a huge fright and I found out Exactly how Strong he was!! Good Lorde.. 😂
I had one as a kid. My father sold our camper when we traveled north in and the guy who purchased the camper asked if we wanted her because he was traveling south. And she rarely warmed up to men but for some reason she liked my dad. He walked her around our 10 acres and she never left the property on her own. She was absolutely amazing. Never bit anyone but had a growl that was so low you could feel it in your bones. This kept anyone she didn’t care for at a safe distance. Some nights I would stay in the barn with her, the best pillow ever! Once after getting my drivers license I brought her to town with me, this is when I understood the real presence she had. The coffee shop I visited had many other dogs and dog owners. Every single dog sat or laid down when I went in. I came out of the cafe and realized that everyone was scared. She never growled or postured she literally just commanded the entire place. I quickly left with her and was later confronted that I shouldn’t have a wolf. I realized solo hiking was in our best interest. I never wanted her to feel that type of energy from any environment again. I learned so much from her. Best companion ever, at least for this wondering soul.
@@dre001 Dogs and wolves are the same species so of course they have wolf blood. However, I wasn't talking about Malamutes anyway. If you watch some of her other videos, there are at least two in which wolves lick the inside of her mouth. That is part of her job.
@@joshuarosen6242 Well, first off I would be totally fine with wolves licking in my mouth as long as they didn't bite me lol. And also, Dogs and wolves are not the same species, though they are closely related.
Hiking on the Cotswolds Way, I sat at a picnic table, suddenly a huge Malamute came along and looked what I was doing, and I cuddled him. Happiest moment of the hike.
I have a half malamute half siberian husky, I belive get the best of both worlds from him. I also have a pure husky and they love each other deeply. They are fantastic breeds and with the correct treatment and exercise they never stop bringing joy into our lives.
Don't they. And they express their emotions just like us. When I pay too much attention to my Husky, Wolf comes up and tells me with a bark and blinking hazel eyes. With all that fluff you have no choice but to give him a big hug.
Gimme a giant breed *every* time!! Malamutes, St. Bernards, Great Danes, Newfoundlands, Mastiffs...etc You'll never find more gentle, laid back, daft, loving and loyal dogs in the world. 😊 xx
Tom Knott - exactly. A great big old soppy cuddle bear of a dog is so much better than one of those yappy rodent ankle biters. If it bounces when it barks, it's not a dog! My friend has a Newfie - a big old russet coloured soppy called Rusty. Whenever I visit, all i have to do is give him a quick cuddle in greeting. He loves the attention so much, he pins me down on the sofa and I can't move. He gets a cuddle from everyone else, but I seem to be his favourite. He just lollops on top of me with those huge paws inches from my face, looking at me with that goofy expression, and everyone just falls about in hysterics. Such comedians.
Judi O'Regan We once had a St. Bernard/Newfoundland cross called Harry. He was HUGE...like a small black fuzzy bear! 😊 And similar to Rusty, Harry's 'trick/niche' was to sit his back end on you, whilst still standing on his front legs. And believe me - his arse weighed _a lot!_ 😉 But I wouldn't have changed him for all the tea in china xx
Tom Knott - oh how gorgeous. The bigger and soppier the dog, the better! A St Bernard and Newfie cross eh! Blimey! Twice the drool for the price of one! ;D
I have a malamute called Asia. Shes long-coated, she weighs in at 179kg and she's 3 years old. Malamutes are gorgeous dogs with really laid back contentment. Amazing specimens
We had a big Malamute named Manuka that we rescued from the pound when he was 6. He was the complete opposite to what what is described. He was so gentle and loved all animals and people especially kids. He got on very well with our Husky rescue dog Nikita who is now 9 but still thinks she is 1 and was a great mentor to our German Shepherd Mieke who we lost to cancer last year at only 8. Manuka was very sad to loose Meike and was in failing health himself. We decided to get another German Shepherd puppy and Manuka was so happy to have a new friend to watch and protect from our overactive Husky. We were so happy we gave him the joy of a puppy as we had to have him put to sleep not long after. Our new Shepherd Elka has settled in very well with our naughty Husky and they are never apart.
Fell in love with this breed at a young age. A family friend had one growing up and he was such a big beautiful dog. Really just a giant teddy bear that will always hold a place in my heart.
Be careful what you wish for. I own Pyrenean Mastiffs (sheep guardians in the Pyrenees mountains) which are a bit thicker coated and weigh about 200-250 pounds. I spend all of EVERY evening brushing, clipping, foot care, and when they blow their coats we have to take them into the yard with a blower. Looks like a snowstorm afterward but it's torture for us and them to try and rake it out. Long haired, double coated dogs are literally a full time job and you must do it to keep their skin healthy. Here is a link to PMs to give you an idea of what they look like and the work involved in keeping them clean and their coats healthy. pyreneanmastiff.com/
Everything Animals: they or he/she will be MUCH happier if you live in a cool or better yet COLD climate. And be prepared for an abso INCREDIBLE SHOW by them if you get a pup and then he gets to see his/her first snowstorm!!! Seriously. It will seem as if someone has plugged an electric current into them. :>) :>)
Beautiful protectors, my most favorite dog breed in the world. Their so lucky so have a charmed life with an owner/trainer who understands their needs to keep them active, healthy and happy.
I have an Alaskan Malamute! He will be 1 on Jan 17th, he already weighs around 90 lbs. 😂 they are amazing, but they are very big. I just realized the other day that he is bigger than my aunts German shepherd. 😱 bathing him is such a pain! But according to other Malamute owners, they don't need to be bathed too much. And u have to get them completely dry after baths or it will cause hotspots. Another thing I have realized is Malamutes will get bored of their food, I am constantly switching his food because sometimes he just doesn't want to eat it. 😒 If you want a Malamute make sure you do your research. They require a lot of attention.
Do yourself a favor and don't do the food switching... instead make him work for his food. It really serves their nature to be active and work for their food. A well worked malamute will eat anything and never be snobbish about his meals and you will be happier as well! ♡
Hi there. Don’t bother switching your Mals food around. That can be disruptive to their digestive system. Mals are not like other breeds, they are not super interested in food-it’s survival not a love (or obsession!lol) like other breeds. Because of their history they are extremely efficient in their use of calories and nutrients. So I promise you he won’t starve, he’ll eat when it suits him, it bothers you more than it does him!! Cheers!
Oh I miss our Malamute! She would bring her treasures up to the front deck all the time...deer, raccoons, possums, coyotes and all kinds of rabbits. She would sit by them on the deck eagerly waiting for our approval. haha LOVED the snow too. She would roll around in the snow drifts all day, laying on her back just loving life. Our favorite time was brushing out that hair. We'd get garbage sacks off of her in the spring. I miss her.........
hunterofpike If you like malamutes well of course you do your here right! Lol follow me on Instagram mylesthemalamute and we have started a TH-cam channel as well!!! Thanks for the support🐾🐾🐾
My favorite breed of all time, I've had three, including my oldest daughter's when he was a pup. They're loyal, great with people and very intelligent. They are much more emotionally complex than most dogs. They need to have mental stimulation, otherwise they get moody and can get depressed. I love them.
I can't speak to that one, but my neighbor across the street had a male giant malamute until he passed a few years ago. One of the biggest dogs I've ever seen. 190 lb, head the size of a horse. Total butterball, but between his mass and the fluff it was truly a sight to behold. That one's a bit smaller, I would guess 140-160. Really hard to guess without knowing how big his mom is
This is incredibly useful information! My husband and I recently acquired a female Alaskan Malamute named Roxy from my sister-in-law. She got her from a husky rescue in the upper peninsula of Michigan. This rescue's first mistake was thinking she was a husky and expecting her to act like a husky. These people are not very intelligent, Roxy is dog aggressive and food aggressive and this husky rescue was convinced there was something severely wrong with her and they were going to KILL HER! All Roxy needed was some understanding! She is a great dog!
I found the best thing we did with our Mali's in regards to other dogs was to introduce them to other dogs at a very young age, otherwise we did struggle. But I also found that they reacted to different breeds, in different ways! They really disliked Rotweliers, but were ok with shepards! But really and I mean realy disliked Newfoundlands!
Loved my Mali. He was super smart, loved our cats, and got along with other dogs. You have to really socialize them early on and often. Not for people who are neat nicks. Even with frequent grooming the hair is everywhere. They are pack animals for sure. His alpha was me. He would follow me everywhere even to the bathroom. He did not like to be alone in a room. They can get destructive if bored. Fortunately my husband and I worked shift work and he was rarely home by himself. We trained him to get the mail and paper. They love jobs. Mine didn’t howl like some do but they talk back and make cute woof sounds. He did not like sleeping on the bed because he got too hot. He had a pool in the summer, loved sitting in snow banks in the winter, and he couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t sit outside with him in a blizzard. Sadly mine passed away at 10 years old. I miss him everyday.
They don't need bathed that much and, for the most part, the majority of the time is allowing them to dry. I have a fluffy dog that, after watching this, I believe she has malamute in her lineage which explains her odd whining, thick coat, and food aggression that appeared out of nowhere and she takes an entire day to dry and HATES a bath.
What a sight to see them running! Our family dog was a Malamute. He lived till he was twelve. He was hands down the most perfect dog in the world! He was such a gorgeous little puppy! So fluffy, so soft! Such giant paws! The things they say about the breed just aren't true(Malamutes are dangerous, Malamutes don't like other dogs, etc.) Our dog was a dedicated family member and loved us all. If he was introduced to visitors, he was great. He never threatened or bit anyone. He had several dog friends that used to come to play. He got along perfectly with our cats. I LOVE how they talk with you, and argue with you(but they obey in the end). I love the sweet howling when the noon whistle blows and when there are ambulances, etc. No negatives. They shed the coat all at once, so there isn't any shedding year round like with short hair dogs. We shaved ours in summer so he'd be more comfortable. We left the hair in a pile in the back yard, and all the birds nests were lined in his beautiful fur. I miss him. If you get one, teach him to behave when a puppy. Important with any large breed.
It's really infuriating when people pigeon hole a breed like that. My family have had German shepherds for the last 50 or so years and not once had an incident with any of them. Despite the fact during the 70s and 80s they were the media's favourite 'dangerous dog breeds'. It's all in the training and nurturing.
@@markjackson7650 It all comes down to the dog's individual temperaments and how you raise them. I've met enough aggressive labradors as well as playful and friendly german shepherds and rottweilers. My only dog bite was by an untrained german shepherd, but my best friends have always been the local mixed breed strays, which everyone says are dangerous and always bite, etc.
To all of you dog owners out there, I’m terrified of getting a pup only because I know I won’t know how to say goodbye. To see them age, develop health problems, and pass on within 12 years, I don’t know if I could do it... How did you all cope with the loss?
I have a Malamute cross Australian Cattle and he is beautiful. In the hotter months I have to have him clipped. Watching this video makes me smile. The one that lets the owner know he wants her to keep stroking him is just like Casper, he does exactly the same and he is everyone's friend. He's well known in our neighbourhood.
I've wanted a Malamute since I was 10 and I'm now 21, but sadly still unable to get one due to house size and circumstances. I've read tons of books on raising, owning and the behaviour of these dogs so hopefully in the future I get the opportunity to raise and love one of these amazing snow dogs.
You can help out in shelters - i am sure there are some sheters that take care of this breed - or a shelter with all types - maybe they have some malamutes there.. The you also do a great service and make their lives a bit better :)
Ive waited over 20 years to get one.. Ive been in college , work, or finances kept me from getting one. Because owning one is like having a child, I didnt take my decision lightly. The good news is next year.. in 2018 Im getting one. :)
Shadow325 everything will fall into place I’ve been wanting a Siberian Husky since I was a kid and I’ve never been able to get one until just a few days ago my sister sent me a picture of a Siberian Husky pup out of nowhere she was the last 1 left and I ended up getting her
Lee Hollebon - common sense would say that you need a house with a good sized garden, with plenty of great walks nearby. And having more space for such a huge dog would make it more comfortable for everyone. You wouldn't be hoovering every hour of the day for one thing.
My Mum had a malamute named kiara but sadly she had to be put down for hip problems and was very sick at the age of 16. So this video makes me so happy that Malamutes are be looked after so well and are staying healthy, hoping to get some more malamutes in the future :)
It's nice to see Malamutes that are so well cared for. There is a big long-hair male named Reilly in my area that is neglected and everytime I see him I tell the owners he needs to be cleaned and brushed out. He is a messy dirty mass of clumps and tangles. :( If you have a long coat dog, PLEASE brush him daily! It only takes a few minutes and is much healthier for the dog and helps bond the dog to you. I can see Reilly is unhappy with his owners, he responds to them minimally... Love you, Anneka!
Beautiful gentle giants. If I lived in a colder climate I`d love one. My neighbor had one when I was a kid. I used to dogsit him. He was so so beautiful and laid back but he suffered in the summers. I love this channel....
*_"..I feel that in order to evaluate this breed I need to meet lots and lots of Malamutes together in a home environment.."_* Top notch excuse to cuddle with a bunch of malamutes, Anneka!! Great job, great doggos, 13/10 would make up 100 more excuses to pet these good bois
They have tremendous power and endurance. And they are a good potion stubborn. They do'nt like warm weather. But nebertheless it's a wonderful dog-breed.
funny enough, I just picked up my Little Malamute last Sunday. I would love it if when she is old enough to pull a kicksled. She is estimated to weigh over a 100lbs when fully grown, her grandfather was around 140lbs. I instantly fell in love with this breed.
Thank you for a great collection and contribution of introductory videos for various dog breeds. I have viewed several of your videos before commenting and subscribing to your channel. I must confess that you certainly provide a great collection of information for each breed, as well as providing a candid list of pros and cons for each breed. It is certainly going to save a lot of animals being unitized because first time dog owners just fall in love with the cute and fuzzy faces of the dogs/puppies without spending any time to research the characteristics of each breed before accepting the responsibility of new addition to their family for the next 10-15 years. I've been a animal lover since I was 3 years old and now I am 65+ years with adopting 7 different breeds of dogs through out my life, so I really appreciate and applaud your efforts and contributions to TH-cam community. Thank you and God bless. Keep up this great work and keep these great videos coming.
Excellent point/fact regarding raw chicken bones, Anneka, thank you. I feed raw chicken wings to my dogs as a treat and I`m literally sick of having to explain that it's perfectly safe plus my dogs absolutely love them and always get excited when I give them a raw wing or two.
Wow, what a video. When I grew up we had an Alaskan Malamute. He was my best friend, my protector and the most incredible dog I ever had. My mom laminated so many photos of the two if us. If I ever got another dog again, it has to be another Malamute. This video just brought back so many memories, I wish I could share my photos. Thanks you!
I live in northern Canada , and I have two Malmutes , they are great dogs for the right owner . I have a cart similar to the three wheeled one in the video and they pull me around on it in the summer , and in the winter they pull me on my skis . They are not fast , but they incredibly strong with lots of stamina -like furry freight trains . They don’t like being inside and much prefer to be outside .
Lost a best friend to suicide and my mom one day said “let’s get you a dog” had no idea what a malamute was but didn’t really care at that time. That next hour we were off to look at a dog she liked. On the way there she asked me what I’ll name him, Idk why but said “toby”. When we got there the owners called for the dog “Kobe come here boy” and it shocked my mom and I. Didnt even know the dogs name and some reason decided to name him that on the way there… Fast forward after 12yrs, Toby was one of the best thing that ever happened to me. Sadly had to put him down but crazy how life works and how much joy daily/weekly that dog brought to me.
Me watching the video: “They are so fluffy and cute! Let me see the comments to see what people think about them.” First comment: “Rip Doody...” Me: “Well, will you look at that somebody just started cutting onions here and proceeded to stab my chest!”
Hot places are a no no for them because they can only stay in an ideal temperature of 28degrees,this is because their blood pressure will begin to increase at temperatures beyond 28 degrees.
Probably better that way, those are not "things". They are living beings that need a lot of care and attention, it's like adopting a new family member not like "buying a thing".
my friend has mals and they are HUGE one was a wooly like in the video unfortunately he died this past January of bone cancer he was only 7 his name was Matsi and he was named after a wolf from a pack that was filmed for a documentary which you can find on TH-cam somewhere. exactly my thoughts, lots of meat to feed SIX of these giants, even if its just dog food, it's still more than 1kg each per day, maybe almost 2 kgs, that's a staggering 600+kg EACH dog per year!!!!! lots of money, but the love its worth it i guess
@@WATPlayer wym not much dude thats a lot of money, just 1kg for each of my 2 dogs everyday is 730kg anually and each bag contains 23kg costing 1000 each so that's almost 32K$ per year(not the same currency as dollars) but it's still enough, plus i have a new puppy and 2 cats, just imagine this family family with such giant dogs plus that Big ass house

I think 50% of the dog is just fur though
Lmao. Their faces when they look at the camera. Like "yes, thats right. I'm a good girl/boy" lol
She must have been incredible

You have to be prepared to let wolves lick the inside of your mouth. It's not all cuddles.
I used to have a husky malamute mix who was the best of both breeds too.
Oh,husky is spectacular! My husky Laika is beautiful and very very happy!!
Blimey! Twice the drool for the price of one! ;D
Tom Knott great danes aren't laidback dude.....
I had a great Dane that was super laid back and was an inside dog and he only chewed up my x wife's stuff which made him even better!
I have a malamute called Asia. Shes long-coated, she weighs in at 179kg and she's 3 years old. Malamutes are gorgeous dogs with really laid back contentment. Amazing specimens
Nanook The Wolf I really hope that’s a typo...179kg would be more than quadruple what they should be.
Even 179 lbs is way too big they should not be over 100 lbs.
One of my all time favourite breeds. Absolutely love them. ❤️
Fell in love with this breed at a young age. A family friend had one growing up and he was such a big beautiful dog. Really just a giant teddy bear that will always hold a place in my heart.
which age can a malamute reach? Sorry my english is not the best :) Greetings from Germany
123 Axel They only tend to live 10-12 years.
Great. Now I need a Malamute. They’re irresistable.
They are, but are a lot of work, walking, keeping active, lot of shedding, big eaters.
MrTaurenshaman Oh, of course! But the benefits seem to outweigh the cons. :)
Sally Sailor who are you tell someone what they are better off with
Everything Animals: they or he/she will be MUCH happier if you live in a cool or better yet COLD climate. And be prepared for an abso INCREDIBLE SHOW by them if you get a pup and then he gets to see his/her first snowstorm!!! Seriously. It will seem as if someone has plugged an electric current into them.

Need the attention but the pay off must be awesome and incredibly heart warming.
Cheers!
That's bad advice .. yes switch his food . If you don't he might eat you 😨
I used to bath mine ion the shower! was the easiest way!
You should not let them attack other animals:((

I’ve met two of these Giant Malamutes recently at a Mall! They are such a gentel giants!!
My favorite breed of all time, I've had three, including my oldest daughter's when he was a pup. They're loyal, great with people and very intelligent. They are much more emotionally complex than most dogs. They need to have mental stimulation, otherwise they get moody and can get depressed. I love them.
When you turn aggressive petting of strangers dogs into a job .

Omg they are so cute and fluffy😍😍
They’re essentially Husky’s on steroids. How big was the one sitting next to the owner, literally a giant?
I can't speak to that one, but my neighbor across the street had a male giant malamute until he passed a few years ago. One of the biggest dogs I've ever seen. 190 lb, head the size of a horse. Total butterball, but between his mass and the fluff it was truly a sight to behold. That one's a bit smaller, I would guess 140-160. Really hard to guess without knowing how big his mom is
My favorite dog breed of all time!! They're absolutely beautiful!
That's not a dog. That's happy wolf.
Well done for rescuing Roxy! She's a lucky girl to have people who understand her.
1 day to wash a dog
6 dogs, 6 days to wash each dog
One day of rest.... 😄 what a life 👌🏼
Seems somewhat right.
Once a month bath with weekly grooming is fine though.
Think about the food bill.
You don't necessarily need to wash them once a week
They don't need bathed that much and, for the most part, the majority of the time is allowing them to dry. I have a fluffy dog that, after watching this, I believe she has malamute in her lineage which explains her odd whining, thick coat, and food aggression that appeared out of nowhere and she takes an entire day to dry and HATES a bath.
Ball of Fur and Love, 😍 . . Beautiful Dogs. !!

V Gil not true my malamute loves my husky,Labrador and patterjack and my husky is a female
@@rayajarofdirt2366 I must ask-what's a PATTERJACK?
To all of you dog owners out there, I’m terrified of getting a pup only because I know I won’t know how to say goodbye. To see them age, develop health problems, and pass on within 12 years, I don’t know if I could do it... How did you all cope with the loss?
I have a Malamute cross Australian Cattle and he is beautiful. In the hotter months I have to have him clipped. Watching this video makes me smile. The one that lets the owner know he wants her to keep stroking him is just like Casper, he does exactly the same and he is everyone's friend. He's well known in our neighbourhood.
Nothing grinds my gears more than when someone sees an Alaskan Malamute and says "OMG, so cute, I love huskies!"
Shadow325 everything will fall into place I’ve been wanting a Siberian Husky since I was a kid and I’ve never been able to get one until just a few days ago my sister sent me a picture of a Siberian Husky pup out of nowhere she was the last 1 left and I ended up getting her
Shadow325 you don’t need a big house to have a big dog load off bollocks
Lee Hollebon - common sense would say that you need a house with a good sized garden, with plenty of great walks nearby. And having more space for such a huge dog would make it more comfortable for everyone. You wouldn't be hoovering every hour of the day for one thing.
My Mum had a malamute named kiara but sadly she had to be put down for hip problems and was very sick at the age of 16. So this video makes me so happy that Malamutes are be looked after so well and are staying healthy, hoping to get some more malamutes in the future :)

No-one...\o/ These ones are above the standarts. An average malamute is smaller.
that could rip you apart
although most malamutes are smaller, there are bigger still. Loook up giant malamutes.
They are not supposed to be this big.
It's nice to see Malamutes that are so well cared for. There is a big long-hair male named Reilly in my area that is neglected and everytime I see him I tell the owners he needs to be cleaned and brushed out. He is a messy dirty mass of clumps and tangles. :(
If you have a long coat dog, PLEASE brush him daily! It only takes a few minutes and is much healthier for the dog and helps bond the dog to you. I can see Reilly is unhappy with his owners, he responds to them minimally...
Love you, Anneka!

They don’t like being inside and much prefer to be outside .
p.s. never underestimate the intelligence of your Malamute as they prefer to collect their own midnight snack collection!
Didnt even know the dogs name and some reason decided to name him that on the way there…
Fast forward after 12yrs, Toby was one of the best thing that ever happened to me. Sadly had to put him down but crazy how life works and how much joy daily/weekly that dog brought to me.
