  • One player is banned for life. Four more are suspended for a year. The mlb has had to investigate betting in earnest for first time in 40 years. I wonder why though?

      It’s definitely a needed rule. I have no problem with gambling. Yes some people take things too far but can say that about a lot of things. I feel bad for those addicted and should make help easily available for those who need it. End of the day it’s up to the individual to be responsible though. If the rule isn’t there it clearly compromises the integrity of the sport.

    Two things can be true at once, MLB can be a hypocrite for getting into bed with National Sportsbooks, and guys can also be dummies for knowing the rules and breaking them. Having said that, I agree with any player proven to be betting on a game they are a part of (on the team) is ban worthy for life. But the guys betting on other teams in other leagues, a year seems too much for me. They won't be able to put this genie back into the bottle so it will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

    What I don't get is why, when all 5 bet on their organization, even as part of a parlay , only one of them was declared "permanently ineligible". I have a list of my least favorite words and phrases, and "lifetime ban"/"banned for life" is among them. "Permanently ineligible" - a Rose by any other name is still a Rose." (Capitalization of Rose and the pun are intentional. One of the biggest shames of MLB, in my view, is that the all-time hits leader, who also had many other fine accomplishments as a player, is not in the Hall of Fame.)

  • @andrewalden8364

    Gambling has always been a part of the game and I’m sure there’s been more players gambling on things they shouldn’t than just Pete Rose. The reason we’re seeing more and more players getting caught (and will continue to see) is because gambling is so much more regulated and monitored, which is a good thing. What’s happened to Marcano and the Raptors’ Jontay Porter just goes to show that the system works and that it’s not a matter of if, but when you get caught if you try gambling on your own sport.

    I dunno. I kinda wanna be okay with betting as long as it's not with a game you're involved in, but I could also see that being hella abused and having people make bets on their behalf, asking players to -insert thing here- to potentially sway their odds for a cut, etc. In a perfect world it can happen without fault, but we all know this world ain't perfect. So I get why MLB would suspend people like this.

  • @libra3655
    @libra3655 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So I think players should be allowed to bet on games, but it's gotta be done in the right manner. Bets must be placed through the players union. The players union will evaluate bets to see if there's a conflict of interest (aka betting on your team to lose, taking negative performance bets on yourself, etc) before being placed. This way if I'm a reliever, I can't take the under 0.5 strikeouts on myself and then give up some nukes. Or be a position player and take the under 1.5 doubles and then just stop hustling out of the box. It can be done and it can be done right. This will keep more players in the game without losing them to silly things.

    I love baseball, I don’t love baseball as much as I used to; MLB allowing legal betting on its game is bad for the game and will lead to actual games getting thrown. Not by the stars, but by the transient players, the umps, the guys who determine errors, and so on. At some point professional wrestling will be (perceived as)more legit than baseball unless something is done.

  • @andrewbloom7694
    @andrewbloom7694 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The thing is correlation doesn't equal causation. The correlation is that these scandals happened after MLB took them on as sponsors...but MLB only took them on as sponsors so recently because it wasn't even legal in many places, and there weren't really many big, reputable companies to do it with 10 years ago either.
    I think its more likely that these people were going to start gabling regardless because it has been legalized in a lot of states and everyone has heard of/used Draftkings and stuff. Its just gotten popular the last few years. MLB advertising it I feel had basically no impact on that either. There are commercials and billboards and stuff everywhere
    That being said I would be fine with gambling (and alcohol, obvs) being illegal to advertise like cigarettes are. But I also wont hold MLB specifically responsible for this.

  • @jonathanchapman9690
    @jonathanchapman9690 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I do think that MLB needs to take part of the blame here, they're almost begging for their athletes to bet on games. But something else that I haven't heard when it comes to these betting scandals, addiction as a mental illness. Just like people get addicted to drugs or alcohol, people get addicted to sex, food, sugar, betting. We just don't view it as a mental illness because we don't deem it on the same level as drugs or alcohol. But addiction is addiction, no matter what the addiction is. Instead of just banning these people, how about MLB tries to help with rehab??? They can afford it...

    As long as it doesn't turn into how the NBA is going, it might be fine. Go look at how many more free throw attempts the Lakers take in games compared to the rest of the league the past few years. If the umps don't eject guys for minor things, miss balls and strikes, botch the replays because of "insufficient evidence", etc. You'll be able to tell something is up.

    • @kingsally2864
      @kingsally2864 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      correlation doesn't always been causation. sometimes you actually got to watch the games. The lakers don't shoot 3s and when your guys are LBJ and AD there's gonna be a shit ton of banging around on the inside, something most teams don't do as much anymore.

    This will continue to be a problem and will get worse. Eventually there will be another Astros 2017 situation (i.e. a tech guy will figure out how to listen to the other team's pitch com) and whatever team does it will also bet. The fact that you can bet not just on game outcomes but on individual plays will exponentially exacerbate the problem.

    Fully respect your take on it May, but I see this differently.
    I think this video goes too hard in blaming MLB's partnership. The MLB getting in a partnership with gambling is just a drop in the bucket of how these gambling sites advertise. If the MLB pulled all its gambling ads, I don't see anything different happening today. Because all this stuff would still be pushed on ESPN or your local sports channel. You'd see it on billboards on the road. It's inescapable.
    Gambling problems in the MLB are popping up because in general, it's became way more accessible for everyone to participate in.
    Similar to you, I have zero issue with gambling itself and am comfortable with the legality of it.
    I think what actually needs to happen though is the gov't needs to put heavy restrictions on how it can be advertised, similar to tobacco products. A random baseball player getting ejected from a league is going to be nothing compared to the wave of gambling addicts that the US is currently grooming.

Put a tinfoil hat on me, but I still believe Ohtani had some involvement in the Mizuhara scandal. MLB did everything in their power to prevent their biggest star from the public scrutiny. Eventually, info is going to be leaked about a big-name player or ref/ump betting on games to eviscerate any and all credibility of a sports league.

    Advertising works, so players who are in parks will see a ton of it and will be more inclined to bet than if there wasn't tons of ads all around them.
    Another thought, Bill Burr has commented a few times on the name the "Black Sox", that it is meant to distance the Chicago White Sox from the scandal since it is still a current MLB team. Do you think that using the Black Sox name rather than "the 1919 Chicago White Sox" is a push by MLB and the White Sox to try and keep the stink off of them since not everyone will know that relationship?

      Of course! The "black sox" we're villains, but we don't need to worry about them anymore!

    Gee wiz, it’s almost as if aggressively promoting sports betting increases players’ involvement in sports betting! 🤯
    Betting is addictive and companies are predators. They should be regulated like cigarette companies: legal but disallowed from advertising. U.S. Americans lose BILLIONS A YEAR in sports bets. I don’t want full illegalization (we know how prohibition went a century ago) but this shit has got to stop spreading and being promoted. You want to bet, ok. Companies just shouldn’t be allowed to advertise their services

    He did not bet on games he played in he bet on Pirates games while being on the inhured list as a member of the Pirates organization. Not even close to the same thing and he only bet for the Pirates to win.
