Cheap Apartment in Chiang Mai (Good Location)

  • Looking at my old room in the Nimman area of Chiang Mai Thailand. I stayed at Baan Thai Apartments for around 4 months when i first came to Chiang Mai. The price is really good for the location on Nimmanhaemin road and just a few minutes from Maya Mall. The rooms are basic but cheap for the prime location. Nimman is a great area for first-time travelers to Chiang Mai or Digital Nomads who like to be in the trendy coffee shop area of Nimman. Living costs in Nimman don't have to be high, with great places around like Baan Thai.

    I lived at the Baan Thai for 11 months when I first arrived in CM, Wayne.
    There was nothing on Nimmanhaemin back then. Opposite the Baan Thai was one hairdresser and a coffee shop. On the left corner walking out, was an optician, and next to that was a 7-eleven, then an off-license. Aside from a few local eateries geared mainly for Thais, that was about it. One morning I walked out of the Baan Thai, and the hairdresser and coffee shop opposite had been bulldozed to the ground overnight. And that, my friend, was the start of the Nimmanhaemin development project we see there today.
    I think the Baan Thai is an excellent base if you need time to shop around for something better, but as a place to live, it's pretty soulless, IMHO.

      I would agree with that Andy, great place to start at for a few months. That's what i did, then found another place. It would be cool to see Nimman before it became the trendy area. Thanks mate.

    Brings back memories, esp. of Smoothie Blues (great food).
    I agree that the side sois are the best. I lived nearby, across from Maya Mall, on a side soi (Lanna Villa Alley), steps away from Furama, in a shared townhouse. My street was quiet, except for the Chinese tour bus leaving every morning and coming back every night. Sadly, my old soi is kinda dead thanks to Covid. But it was a fantastic location, not IN Nimman exactly, but a five minute walk away, so close enough. I prefer the Old City more, I think.

    Nice photo with Ronald! I think the building would be ok for someone if they were staying in the country short term, but I could definitely see someone outgrowing it. Personally, I'd like to find a place on the ground floor with around 2 bedrooms so that I could make one of the rooms an office/studio for my TH-cam work. I'm like you with heights though. I'm scarred to death of them. Great video, mate.

    I remember going to look at Baan Thai in 2010 and the price then was 5,000 THB per month so not an excessive increase over the last 10 years. There was certainly no flat screen TVs and modern fridges then and i am pretty sure the shower was above the toilet so definately some improvements since then. A bargain considering the location.

      @WalkAboutWayne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't really understand why a westerner would need a place as cheap as that. Nobody is that hard up. It really is basic! Plenty of much better ones available on airbnb now, same price. No contract needed, leave when you like, no deposit. There are thousands available in CM right now, at every price. I've just arranged a lovely house inside the Old City @350 dollars per month. As far as I am concerned, that is dirt cheap.

    • @WalkAboutWayne

      Ofcourse, loads available in Chiang Mai, for all kinds of prices. Air Bnb is cool, can find some good deals I agree, but nothing beats on foot in Chiang Mai. Sounds like your a lucky one though Alex, where money isn't a factor. Hope you enjoy the place buddy 🙂

      @@WalkAboutWayne Wayne, I was in CM long before you were. This trip is for at least 2 years. We are the exception. The vast majority of visitors ARE actually in CM for a lot less than 3 months. 99.99% of farangs get a place in CM for 5 days to 4 weeks. Take a look at the videos uploaded by TH-camrs over the past 6 months. The majority have rented condos for a few months that are ultra luxurious, @ a lot more than I am prepared to pay. Most of your subscribers, assuming that they get off their backsides, stop dreaming and actually get to CM, will not be renting 6,500 baht rooms or eating 40 baht noodles. They don't need to.
