Venus tbh i don’t understand why she’s saying its good to wash it daily!! Roughly all drugstore shampoos contain sooo much silicone and stuff that create buildup and greasyness, and worst of all greasy yucky stinky dandruff from cheap shampoos and conditioner D:.. my hair used to get dirty everyday from washing every 1/3 days with those shampoos. Now i use only silicone/paraben free shampoos from the hairdresser. I wash it once a week now and starts to get dirty at day 4/5(!!). She was probably paid to say this omg my head hurts from watching this video. Also, not everyones hair is made for washing everyday, i have curls washing it everyday would kill it off instantly
snickerwizard she didn’t say daily in the video she said as much as your hair can tolerate also she’s using the function of beauty shampoo in this video with no fragrance etc
Idk my hair is very greasy, but when I washed it everyday I used to get so much dandruff? It got a lot better after managing one or even two days after without shampoo or anything
Liu484 did Dr dray forget to mention that there are two types of dandruff? One for too dry skin and one for too oily/ seborrheic skin. If the surfactants in the shampoo are too harsh and you don’t re-moisture your skin on the scalp you get dandruff. if you’re prone to dry skin in general you shouldn’t be using harsh surfactants like SLS or SLES and don’t wash it every day. If you‘re somewhere in between dry and oily skin, and you strip your scalp off too much sebum your scalp will produce more and more so you get faster greasy hair.
Here is a helpful tip I use when applying conditioner: I keep a hand towel hanging on the curtain rod, and after I rinse the shampoo out, I towel blot the extra water out of my hair, then use my conditioner. The hair shaft will absorb a bit more of the conditioner than it will if it is fully saturated with water.
@@brooklynsbaby4367 My hair is the same way. I have bizarre hair in that it's oily but also very thick and somewhat coarse. I have a relative who doesn't wash her hair very often and guess what? I can smell it! It's so gross! When I go to hug her, all I smell is dirty hair. She said she doesn't wash it because she is trying to preserve the color. I just wanted to say, 'BUT YOU STINK!' but, of course, I didn't say that to her. If she only knew!
@@RedLikeWine High quality hair color withstands regular washing, she just needs to start use a different kind. And I have a friend who does the same thing and I feel your pain!
I am Filipino and we wash our hair everyday. The weather in the Philippines is hot and humid plus the smoke and smog so at the end of the day, your hair is totally icky and oily. You will actually get teased if you don’t wash your hair on a daily basis. 😅🙂 I can also say that a lot of Filipino women have smooth, silky and healthy hair even if its washed daily.
It's silky and healthy because you wash it everyday. I'm white with 1a hair and I know what happens if I don't wash my hair everyday: oil and sweat buildup, itchy and inflamed scalp and massive hair loss. Same is for you Filipino, our hair is not that different. As long as your scalp is clean, your hair is healthy
thesunlessway well, true but not entirely. You have to care for the actual length of the hair as well. The ends are the oldest part of the hair and are farther from the scalp, so you do have to baby them if you want to retain that length.
Yes!!! people always ask me how my hair is so shiny.. i wash it every day! I can tell when people don't wash their hair, it looks dry and dull, no shine at all and i literally don't understand why people don't want clean shiny hair every day?
In the last two years, I have lost half of my hair due to intestinal failure and other illnesses, and it's so heartbreaking. I always thought that my hair was the only thing my genetic illness wouldn't take from me, but in the end, it did. I don't even want to wash it or brush it anymore because it makes me cry every single time.
Don't cry, I'm sorry. I hope that this is just a temporary condition and that you will heal soon and regrow your hair! I've said a little prayer for you.
Theresa We need more kindness in society. You are most welcome. FWIW, my hair has bouts of coming out due to dry, sensitive scalp in the winter and it freaks me out when it happens. Biotin supplements really help my situation along with cleansing my scalp with Dessert Essence Raspberry Shampoo which is moisturizing and gentle. God is with you.
It made me feel sooo good to know I can wash my hair everyday! I can't for the life of me go past 2 days and even that is rare. You are so full of knowledge and can't tell you how much I appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos. I have had an itchy scalp for years (no dandruff) and now starting to go gluten free and use scent free products. I don't have an oily scalp and I hate dry shampoo! I'm a mama of 3 plus 3 bonus kids and don't even have time to use heat on my hair. 99% of the time it's in a hair tie but now I notice my hair is thinning near my ears and hairline. I will definitely be trying these shampoos. Thank you again !
I feel like I was tricked by the media into thinking I NEEDED a dry shampoo. I wasted so much money buying countless dry shampoos that didn't work when all I needed to do was wash my hair! Duh🤦
I don't have time to shampoo my hair daily (I have very long hair) so it's faster for some of us to use dry shampoo for those inbetween days. A lot of busy new moms I know use it. Perfect for camping, or touch up oily roots at work or on humid day when we can't shower till we get home!
I noticed a huge difference in my hair when we had soft waters VS hard water. Hard water clogs your pores, my hair was brittle, ichy scalp. Same with my skin.
Crimson Cupcake hey Crimson see you here often. Yeah, that grey at the temple thing on men? Yum. And my hair is now almost white, so THANK YOU for loving grey! Although all you youngsters dyeing it that color is reall silly and makes me laugh! Why would you hasten nature??? Have a great week!🙏🏻❤️ Blessings of LOVE
Totally agree, we need to modernize and accept silver hair is beautiful and looks far better with our aging skin tones. We are conditioned to "hide" our silver hair as women because of ageism.
Note that she said to shampoo our hair as often as it can handle. I practically spent so many years trying to shampoo my hair less frequently because of the internet community but at some point realized that my scalp would get VERY VERY itchy at the night I don‘t wash my hair. I could see my hair falling out on my pillow to, which is not the case if I do wash my hair every night. It‘s horrible. My hair does get dry because of it but my scalp is sooo oily (and so is my face). I switched to a shampoo with pH of 5,5 (from sebamed) and it doesn‘t dry my hair out even though I shampoo my hair that often.
Love it! It’s amazing to see the differences between your routine and the routine for many POC, myself included. For instance, my hair will actually break and grow slower if I wash everyday and combing while damp is ideal. We are similar in the caveat that applying heat is a no-no and a nighttime bonnet is a must!
Same here. If I don’t comb or put any leave in or a spray or anything, I end up with a clump or matted curls. Ugh. 32 years olds and I still don’t know what to do with my hair. I don’t heat and I always put a bonnet but geez...this is rough lol
Same! As a woman of color, once a week washing my hair works for me when I wear my hair curly (3c-4a curls). If I straighten it, I might have to wash it sooner, but I try to stretch it. It’s easier for oils to travel down the hair strand when it’s straight. That’s why women with straighter hair may have to wash more often. Every day washing would cause me hair breakage. It works for my hair and it’s almost waist length.
That's what Philip Kingsley used to say too. We take our hair to the same places we take our skin, so why shouldn't we wash it daily? All kinds of crap get absorbed into hair.
Yes!!! So gross, if you are going to wash your face twice a day and your body once you most definitely need to wash your hair and scalp as often as your body.
Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner is working beautifully for my hair. It has never been so soft and silky before and no frizzies. But first to wash my scalp I just use the Johnson's Baby Shampoo on my scalp only, rinse it out and then start with the Argan oil on my long hair. I don't and never did use any heat on my hair but I do a naughty.......color it slightly every so often. I get my hair trimmed maybe 1/2 inch at the bottom every 2-3 months. Dr. Dray I wish I had the time to wash my hair, as you said everyday, but I'm a surgical nurse and sometimes stuck at work for 2-3 days so no time. Dr. Dray my hair is about as long as yours and I love long hair and I will never, ever cut my hair short. Thank you Dr. Dray for the wonderful tips.
Olivia Gawlik not true. Your hair grows from your scalp and is continuously growing. Unless you have some sort of underlying condition, where your experience zero hair growth whatsoever. But if that’s not the case then your hair is growing. Yes, genetics plays into the rate at which you experience hair growth, hair thickness etc. so your hair might grow slower than someone else’s...but if your hair isn’t growing past a certain length then you are most likely experiencing breakage at your ends. Which comes down to what you are or aren’t doing to take care of your hair.
I have to wash my hair every other day. I suffer from menopausal hot sweats and makes my hair greasy and sweaty- smelling. I then get the itchy scalp... so yes . If i leave it any longer if doesn't benefit from being left. My scalp likes to be fresh and clean.
When I condition my hair I don’t turn off the water but instead just use the next couple of minutes to shave my legs maybe use a foot scrub/etc then when I’m done I rinse out my conditioner and wash my hands then face :)
Nice that some people Can just air dry their hair. The reality is for some of us-if I don’t brush my hair with the hair drier my hair doesn’t have shape, gets frizzy, some natural hairs need to be styled. This doctor can do that because her hair is long, doesn’t have layers and is wavy only.
Wish I knew this sooner ! I used to wash my hair every other day until I heard that it’s not good to watch my hair that often. So I got in the habit of watching my hair only twice a week. Result: hair loss, my scalp hurts on the second day post wash, itchy scalp, breakage, dandruff like crazy, my hair grows way slower. All in all, don’t get hair results from unprofessionals. Rather, listen to your body and it’s needs.
Hey Dr. Dray, I was wondering if you have or could make a hair removal video, best ways you would reccomend to remove hair on all areas of the skin. I hope all is well with you, love and God bless!
Are there any known adverse effects from the laser, such as it causing hair loss? There are 3 subjects that I would like for you to cover: 1) Nutrients typically needed to maximize the health of each hair type, if they vary from one another. 2) What an ideal haircut should accomplish, and what type of damage might be evident in a bad one, like hair constantly feeling damp). 3) How can you tell when facial bumps are heat rash or something else, and, how can you tell when they're serious enough to warrant a doctor's visit? Thanks for such informative videos.
I heard that Japanese women rinse their hair in the water that is left from boiling rice, in fact I think they use it on body and face I wonder what's in the rice water that would be beneficial 🙏🌾
Michelle S a rice water rinse is recommended as one possible hair treatment if you follow the Curly Girl method. I noticed Dr Dray used a couple of CGM methods : wide toothed comb, bonnet, drying with cotton material. 😊
Rice water rince us supposably really beneficial and helps a lot with hair growth. However it's better to use non boiled rice water because boiling it reduces the benefits of it
When you cook rice there's no water left. It all gets soaked in the rice or evaporated.(unless you do it the Italian way, which is not how us Asians cook our rice) I know some undeveloped regions in China used to use water that was used to rince uncooked rice to wash their hair. Maybe in the ancient times some Japanese people did that, but not nowadays. They do however have rice toner and other skincare products with rice extract and they're quite popular
@@Losshe yep I'm a totally rubbish cook so plenty water in my rice, I think it's cold water actually, I tried it on my face and it smells a bit at first but wow it really tightens up your skin I was glowing...... 🙏😁
I enjoy all of your videos, but this is my favorite. I have been struggling with my hair in perimenopause, probably doing too much with it in order to bring out the waves. I needed this reminder to just wash more frequently, and keep it simple. Any hair health videos, heatless styling, and maturing skin videos are greatly appreciated!
I ordered Function of Beauty after watching your earlier video. I have a autoimmune disease and I had a noticeable improvement on the first use. Not only did my scalp improve but it doesn't irritate my skin as it washes along my body in the shower. Thank you Dr. Dray.
vicki moraw me too. Which hair goals did you pick? I would also super appreciate it if can you please do me a favor and check your account’s subscription section and see if there is a cancellation button. I can’t find one on mine. And I’m hella skeptical about this product sometimes, maybe it’s the ingredient mix I chose
I'm currently in the middle of growing out my hair after 6-7 years of keeping it super short because I hate dealing with it, having it in my face, on my neck, etc., and lemme tell you.... It's not like riding a bike. You DO forget how to do basic care lol. So this helped a lot, thank you.
@@PLuna-gf6sh I just got some from ebay. They were all good, cheap and no particular brand! Just search for bonnets. :) I do use it when my hair is wet, and haven't had any problems with that.
I want to emphasize the goal of washing your hair, to cleanse your scalp not the mid shaft and ends. I hardly think it’s a myth, not to wash your hair everyday, but rather to stop people from drying out their ends. As a stylist, I do still to actually tell my clients refrain from washing hair everyday, because the washing and heat styling everyday is what drys the midshafts and ends because a lot of people don’t know how to wash their hair properly. Wash and cleanse the scalp, not the ends. Condition has enough to clean the ends without drying them out.
It’s so validating to hear it’s not bad to shampoo you’re hair everyday. I also shampoo everyday. I always notice I have breakouts if I skip shampooing and I just don’t feel right when I don’t wash my hair. Thanks for the video Dr.Dray ❤️

@@enchanted1800 I used Minoxidil shampoo/conditioner for 6 months; didn't do a dang thing for me! My hair is thinning along the front hairline & the part. Happened post-hysterectomy. Embarrassing! Now use a fiber powder when I go out in public. Bummer!
esterixis what shampoo and Conditioner? If you need it you should use the fluid or mousse. The agent has to go through the skin to function. That’s why you shouldn’t wash your hair at least 4 hours afterwards. You would wash the minoxidil away without it being able to work. That’s why shampoo and/or conditioner will never work for hair loss. First you need a substance which can penetrate the agent through your thick skin like propylene glycol or alcohol in high concentrations you won’t find that in Shampoos or Conditioner. Second like I said you don’t leave shampoo or conditioner sit for hours on your scalp. So this will never ever work.
I would love to see a video on hair styles to prevent hair thinning! I keep my hair back in a loose-ish bun but at 42 I'm noticing my straight, fine hair is thinning. Thanks!
On your deva curl video you basically said to stay away from sulfates free shampoos, because they will create buildup and give issues such itching, balding.... so, may I ask, isn’t function of beauty sulfate free as well?
I actually need an entire day for my hair to dry. I could never wash my hair at night since I'd probaby wake up with my hair still terribly damp!!!!!! 🤷♀️
Dear Dr. Dray, Thank you so much for all of your hair videos. I used to have very a itchy, dry, inflamed dry scalp and after watching your videos my scalp is so much better.
Taking MSM and/or putting it in your conditioner for a few minutes makes your hair grow and fast! I was skeptical but it works, in a matter of a four days to a week. Must be organic and good quality.
Please understand the info is for straight fabrics of hair. Most of the info applies However, if you have textured hair washing weekly is enough, conditioner needs to stay on for 3min at least, follow with a leave in, and deep condition every time you shampoo. Oils run down the length of straight hair, it does not with coils and kinks. Dry type 3A and above hair breaks, moisture is the key to retaining length, nothing else.
wrong. it has nothing to do with hair texture, it’s more related to oil production. if your hair is dry and your scalp got oily u still have to wash it, why rely on sebum for moisture? also sebum does run down curly hair as well if you brush it. i have 3b/3a hair and i cant go more than 3 days without washing my scalp
@@bie-p1l but you dont have 3C to 4B hair, your fabric of hair has a different curl and is slicker than Afro textured hair. My advice was for the 3C-4C textured curls, this fabric only needs to be washed 1-2X per week. Moisture is the key to healthy hair for all textures.
I've seen some noticable changes since using a wide-tooth wooden comb. Less frizz, static, and my scalp seems less oily in between washes, since I wash every-other-day.
I've been dealing with Seborrheic dermatitis since I was a kid. It's on and off. If I don't dry my hair, my scalp is warm and wet so it will grow bacteria. When that bacteria and sebum combined, it creates odor. So I need to dry my hair, especially scalp (with moderation). Your hair looks great though!
@@tracy_cakkes No, I try not to wash every day because I feel it makes my scalp dry, but if I don't wash for two days, my scalp gets smelly. So I wash every other day :)
They say that air-drying can actually be more damaging since your hair swells up when it's wet. Personally, my hair takes ages to dry so I always help it with the dryer on a cool setting, still does the job and my hair doesn't look fried. My hair feels very weak after air-drying, but if a person's hair dries fast and they don't have scalp problems, it's probably okay to air-dry.
I stopped washing my hair every day a few years back.. it was drying my hair out too much since I've gotten older... over 70... I have naturally curly hair... I use a t-shirt material to dry my hair.. never rub it... I let it air dry ... using a blow dryer makes it very very frizzy...
I have very long thick hair, I wash my hair once a week, I have never had any scalp problems, my hair is very healthy and in good condition, even if I had the time or inclination to wash my hair every day it would cause extensive damage as it simply doesn't need to be washed that often.
As someone with short hair, and does frequent exercise, my hair is literally dripping wet with sweat. It needs washed after this! What she's saying is wash your hair as often as required, for you that's once a week, but that isn't the same for everyone.
Same here. My hair is very long and I only wash it once a week. It barely gets oily because my scalp is used to it. If I was it more often it's a frizz fest!
Not washing your hair will allow sebum and all kinds of pollution to clog your hair follicles and that is the main reason for hair fall. One week is too long.
I saw an Amish woman who wore her hair in a tight bun. She had an approx. 1/2 "+ wide part that started in the front and went back quite a ways. I'm assuming she wore her hair in a tight bun often which resulted in her hair loss. I'm considering buying the i-restore. I don't have much hair loss but my son does and I want to see how I like it then hoping he'll give it a try.
Thanks for recommending Function of Beauty. My hair is so shiny, soft, hydrated and way less frizzy since I have started using it. I wish I would have known about the company sooner. I also am a big fan of the dye free, fragrance free option. Not to dismiss any of the comments below, but from my own personal experience, I haven't experienced any shedding. The Function of Beauty customer service is a bit slow (especially considering the high paced world many are accustomed to) but they are great, just need to be patient.
How are you finding it now? I'm really tempted to try it but because I wash mine everyday I think it would become too expensive..but its just the comments of hair shedding that put me off! Xx
I went to check Function of Bratury and I was a bit amazed and disappointed by them for recommending menthol for soothing the sclap, when menthol is sensitizing... -_-
I have wavy hair. I used to wash my hair every other day, but I've "trained it" to only need to wash it 2 times a week. I've been doing this for a year and a half. I find that my hair doesn't get as oily as quickly anymore. Honestly, my hair only gets oily on day 4 unless I used a hair product that was too heavy (like a curl cream). I might wash my hair 3 times a week depending on when I exercise or the buildup. Once every two weeks I also use a scalp scrub/clarifying shampoo. I regularly use a scalp serum. I'm using one now that contains urea and HA. This togheter with using sulfate free or gentle sulfate shampoos and my silicone free conditioner really helped my hair health. Sadly I still don't have a lot of hair, but that's just the way it is. Your hair texture definitely plays a part in how often you should wash your hair. I'm never going back to washing every other day
Off topic, but can you please talk about beauty gadgets and devices, such as: light masks(for anti aging, acne..), massage tools, eye lifters etc..? Please 😊
she's actually talked about that and some other videos. The summit up in short I believe she said the light therapy for acne was actually good and that all those fancy gadgets for your face such as the eyes are just marketing schemes.
This is a bit of a tangent question, but I read that there was a study where selenium sulfide caused lasting damage to hair follicles. Is this a real concern? I’ve dealt with female hair loss on and off for several years and have also used selenium sulfide for dandruff control for maybe two. I switched to Nizoral about a month ago after reading that selenium sulfide could be damaging, but shedding seems to have noticeably increased...which could be from any number of things, as you talked about in this vid...the shampoo change was the only thing I could pinpoint. Selenium sulfide controls my itching the most.
i like the company, the products have all been excellent as has the customer service experience. Some of the best sunscreens get the worst consumer ratings as well, so I don't typically put much emphasis on consumer reviews.
Now that I am in my 40s, I've noticed a n oilier scalp and can't get away with skipping washing my hair or I end up with small pimple-like pustles on my scalp. I guess malasezzia due to the oil build up? I have Nizoral and Selson blue and have switched to a daily wash to avoid this from happening. I'm going to try the t‐shirt method next!
I have the same thing happening to me. I’m only 31 but I’ve noticed not washing makes my scalp so irritated and itchy. I used to get away with it when I was younger. I’ve switched to the Hask Biotin shampoo and it helps.
I have the same! I started using shampoo with salicylic acid. There is one called scalp care with apple cider vinegar that seems to work really well for me and the weird sand like dandruff i get. I also feel like blow drying helps. Keeping moisture/water off my scalp.
I'm sorry, but heads stink when they aren't washed. (I know it's a natural/normal thing.) I washed my hair every day for over 50 years. Now, I wash every other day, sometimes wait til the third day. One of the few perks of growing 'wise' haha. It helps my demi-permant color rinse last longer. 😁 I use a little bit of dry shampoo at the root of my hair to "freshen" it, if I go out with 3rd-day hair so it's not so flat/blah.
I wash my hair at least every other day, and it helps my scalp so much! (The only reason I don't wash it every single day, is that it takes forever to dry lol). Thank your for speaking out against this obsession with washing your hair max once a week. I understand that is what works best for people with very curly hair, but it doesn't work for a lot of people....
@@SeauxSavannah I've learned a lot from watching natural hair videos. Try to incorporate some tricks and tips that work for me too. Just need to wash my hair more frequently.
Thanks for the advice! I just shaved all my hair off due to twenty years of extreme damage of box hair dye and every day heat products-shaving it off was the only option.
Is this still your go-to products and method for growing hair? Or have you done an updated version, since this is a 2020 video and currently we are in 2023?
@@M_K_M_K_M_K Many times I do condition afterwards as well. I guess it depends on hoy dry my hair has felt and how much longer I want to spend Ain the shower.
Girl I tried this for three days and that's the most stressed out I've been in a while. My hair wouldn't dry from the first wash and it would be time to wash them again. I haven't been able to try any hairstyles apart from a bun because my hair just refused to dry. I'm glad it works for you but uh oh it did not work for me.
I have alopecia due to irregular periods. Will the at home laser treatment help me? I've been prescribed to ingest vitamins and a hair spray(did not contain minoxidil) to use on my scalp daily. I didn't find much results because of the spray. Although my hair doesn't fall while shampooing these days. I wash my hair every third evening using a medicated dandruff shampoo. But ig after watching this vlog I'm convinced to wash every day(I'll have to find one mild one to do so).
Dr Dray, I recalled u also recommended a Japanese shampoo that you like in the past. How does this shampoo compare to the Japanese shampoo? Which one do u like better & which one would you recommend?
I have curly hair but my scalp is often itchy and seems to get dirty quickly. This thing is my scalp needs to be washed every other day but washing that much dries my curly out. It’s a challenge! 90 percent of the time I air dry. I do color my hair, not often but every 3 months or so to cover grey hair.
1)Wash your scalp, not your hair, 2) then concentrate your conditioner on your ends and also 3) use a leave in that your hair likes. 4) So sorry about the itchy scalp.. Try a medicated shampoo that you place on your scalp for a few minutes. I use shampoos with active ingredients ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione as a scalp mask for a few minutes then rinse it out. Coal tar can also help. Eventually, when they work, you can reduce frequency of washing. 5) Check out Dr Dray's videos on Sebhorheic dermatitis and on dandruff and itchy scalp. Blessings on your journey to scalp health 🙏💕
I actually can't believe she pinned her hair back up after it was freshly washed, naturally dried,, with that beautiful wave... like guUuUuuUuRrRrL, let that hair shine. She's got gorgeous locks. Show it off!!!
A lot of it is hormonal and androgens. Menopause wrecks havoc on skin and hair. The thyroid also plays a huge part. It starts internally. If youre unbalanced inside and your hormones all over the place no external remedies will correct the hair issues.
1. Shampoo and condition every night using gentle hydrating products. 2. Satin cover your hair at night to avoid hair shaft breakage. 3. At home laser machine for prolonged hair growth phase.
Yes, please on hair thinning styles. Also, what about reviews on various products used to help hide thinning like the various fiber powders or root sprays out there. Thank you!
My hair has never been as good as it is since I've started washing it every day. Super healthy, sleek and shiny! Drives people who like to say that 'wAshinG yOur haiR EvErydaY iS SO baD' crazy mad lol.
Daily washing is probably only good for type one and two hair types. The over manipulation of type 3 and 4 might cause breaking. Also what’s the point is using a hair mask then shampooing the conditioning agents the next night?
I know you mentioned not using hair dyes, what do you think of color depositing shampoos or semi-permanent dyes. I use both of these products and do not use dyes that require peroxide. I also don't use styling products, and very rarely use any sort of heat to my hair.
hey Dr Dray, I notice in the beginning of the video you recommend not to brush/comb wet hair. But what about if you have curly hair and the only way to detangle your hair is when it's wet with a leave in conditioner, will that still damage the hair shaft or ends?
For people with curly hair the benefits of detangling hair when damp and slippery is more than the damage. Cos of you did it the other way you'd just break it anyway. I did read to not detangle under running water though, so try damp instead
This would not work for me. I am 75 % grey and have started going grey in my 20s. Certainly not ready to embrace the ‘grey look’. My hair would take at least 5 hours to dry naturally . I would consider more natural shampoos but I actually love my hair smelling nice
THANK YOU for talking about the importance of cleansing the scalp frequently and how keeping the scalp clean contributes to overall hair health. I work for a well-known beauty company that is especially known for its haircare. We have a camera that takes a greatly magnified picture of the scalp, and I can’t tell you how many gross scalps I’ve seen: scalps that inflamed, flakey, and are crusted with sebum and dead skin cells. I’ve seen customers with thinning hair because of their addiction to dry shampoos, which along with sebum and dead skin cells, was clogging up their hair follicles. I had a customer say that she only shampoos “once a week to protect her hair.” It was on the tip of my tongue that if that was true, then I should only wash my face “once a week to protect my skin” and I wear a full face of makeup to work. 🙄🤦🏻♀️ Absolutely agree with all the other hair tips, including avoiding heat styling as much as possible and keeping the ends healthy with conditioning. I use a silk pillowcase to avoid friction, but now I’m intrigued by your silk hair bonnet. My hair is about the same length as yours.
My company moved offices and now my office gets direct sunlight for a good portion of the day. I can apply sunscreen throughout the day but what should I do about my scalp? I can't wear a hat at work and my part is exposed to the sun and my scalp will burn.
Hi Dr. Dray! Can you do a video on the effects, pros and cons of using heat on hair? There is a lot of conflicting information on whether air drying or hooded hair drying or blow drying/diffusing is better for hair health. Can you expand on those points for us?
What would you recommend then for someone with curly hair on how to dry and care for their hair? Some depend on drying their hair with a hair dryer and stay far away from a brush in the mornings.
I'm no expert, but I gently squeeze the water out of my hair with a towel, brush my teethe, wash my face, floss, moisturize, etc.- then comb it while damp, squeeze water out one more time and let the rest air dry. And just like you, no brushing or anything after that. I find thag even if some of the curls look unruly in the morning, they settle as the day goes on.
I also had one more question about Laurie Lauric acid, in coconut and cocoa. Both skin and cause cystic pimple s that itch. Unfortunately, o didn’t know cocoa had the same affect and now i have scars on my shoulders. Coconut is virtually in everything now which makes it a pain in the neck when it comes to buying anything anymore.
I have super dry, frizzy, curly/ wavy hair and typically wash my hair every 2-3 days. when I see people washing their hair once a week or going even more time I always cringe lol.
who's here watching this with greasy hair because of how they thought shampooing frequently is bad?
Venus you ain’t the only one b
I do this too :)
Yep, I do this too.
Thank you!

My hair is so much better when I wash it every day. Glad I'm not alone!
Oh girl, same, people like to make you feel guilty about it lol. I swear, if I let it get oily it starts shedding like crazy

This is good to know! My Filipina friends are hair shine goals! ❤️
I agree with you even though I have wavy, coarse, dry hair. I noticed that my hair is more dry when I don’t shampoo everyday.
thesunlessway well, true but not entirely.
Theresa I just said prayers for you. 🙏🏻❤️

Duh🤦

OMG ME TOO!! All throughout my college years 😭
Everybody is different, my hair is better when I only shampoo twice a week
I don't have time to shampoo my hair daily (I have very long hair) so it's faster for some of us to use dry shampoo for those inbetween days. A lot of busy new moms I know use it. Perfect for camping, or touch up oily roots at work or on humid day when we can't shower till we get home!
I have yet too find a dry shampoo that doesn’t leave white junk in my hair. Even when it says it wont.
I noticed a huge difference in my hair when we had soft waters VS hard water. Hard water clogs your pores, my hair was brittle, ichy scalp. Same with my skin.

meaghan irvine yea I wash my hair once a week twice at most
meaghan irvine me too I used to wash my hair every two days and it was too aggressive for my fine, curly (actually wavy) and dry hair.
Paquita El Maestro Yea my hair is naturally curly and dry so can’t wash it too much
My hair is super fine, very dry, half grey. I wash it only once a week but condition the bottom half almost every day.
I was it only once a week when natural, but when I blow dry it I can stay 2 weeks cuz my hair is so dry. And if I do more it would be much more dryer
I also think natural silver/grey hair is beautiful. And handsome on men. More people should embrace the grey !!
I love gray hair too!
Totally agree, we need to modernize and accept silver hair is beautiful and looks far better with our aging skin tones. We are conditioned to "hide" our silver hair as women because of ageism.
No slave to the dye ... love Drs advice with no heat especially now I have dye feee hair. More fragile. 🍀💜
But not when you have premature grey hair. Having grey hair in your 20 and early 30 not beautiful at all.
I use a Turbie Twist when I get out of the shower. It’s significantly more absorbent than a shirt and does not make my hair frizzy.
Meranda Sue I have one of those in my travel bag (from my fabfitfun box). They work well too. 👍🏼👍🏼

Would you buy the light helmet if it wasn’t gifted to you Dr. Dray? It’s quite an investment I’m pondering. Would love some honest feedback.
I shampoo my hair everyday too!!!! I lpve the shineness of freshly washed hair ..the smell🥰 and my hair is thrivinggf
Thankyou for busting that myth about shampooing frequently. Feeling way better about how often I wash my hair
Thanks for letting me know there’s not much here that’s applicable for me lol I’m sure it’s still an awesome video though!

Haden Harris Yup!!👏👏👏
I own the bedsure ones I have 2 pairs. Love them!!!
I purchased a satin pillowcase about a month ago. Never knew cotton broke hair and absorbed oils from the face. I have dry skin.
Anthony Marshall no way!🤣 and i thought I should just wash it with ketchup
@@DaTa-wm5yc maybe its just because of genetics :( some people will never grow long hair no matter how much they try
Girl I was trying to offer you advice 🤣🤣 try castor oil

Yes! I grew my hair so long by washing it almost everday!
Hey Dr. Dray, I was wondering if you have or could make a hair removal video, best ways you would reccomend to remove hair on all areas of the skin. I hope all is well with you, love and God bless!
Are there any known adverse effects from the laser, such as it causing hair loss?
There are 3 subjects that I would like for you to cover:
1) Nutrients typically needed to maximize the health of each hair type, if they vary from one another.
However it's better to use non boiled rice water because boiling it reduces the benefits of it
@@noemiechevalier4373 thank you, that makes a lot of sense 🙏
When you cook rice there's no water left. It all gets soaked in the rice or evaporated.(unless you do it the Italian way, which is not how us Asians cook our rice) I know some undeveloped regions in China used to use water that was used to rince uncooked rice to wash their hair. Maybe in the ancient times some Japanese people did that, but not nowadays. They do however have rice toner and other skincare products with rice extract and they're quite popular

Karen S: Have you watched any of her videos on hair loss and hair growth, et al? To easily find them, type “dr dray hair loss” in the TH-cam search bar.
Try a laser brush for a cheaper option with the same tech maybe.
Try using the Rogaine, aka minoxidil.

Can't wait to go wash my hair as soon as this video ends 😝😁😂👍🏻
@@bie-p1lShe's not wrong, you're just the anomaly not the rule.
I've seen some noticable changes since using a wide-tooth wooden comb. Less frizz, static, and my scalp seems less oily in between washes, since I wash every-other-day.
Caylie Fuller where did you get yours?
I've been dealing with Seborrheic dermatitis since I was a kid. It's on and off. If I don't dry my hair, my scalp is warm and wet so it will grow bacteria. When that bacteria and sebum combined, it creates odor. So I need to dry my hair, especially scalp (with moderation). Your hair looks great though!
Anela S I have it too but I’ve never experienced the odor just really dry face and scalp I get it in my ears too Do you wash your scalp everyday?
@@tracy_cakkes No, I try not to wash every day because I feel it makes my scalp dry, but if I don't wash for two days, my scalp gets smelly. So I wash every other day :)
They say that air-drying can actually be more damaging since your hair swells up when it's wet. Personally, my hair takes ages to dry so I always help it with the dryer on a cool setting, still does the job and my hair doesn't look fried. My hair feels very weak after air-drying, but if a person's hair dries fast and they don't have scalp problems, it's probably okay to air-dry.
Could dr.dray make a vid on this condition please?
I think I have this but not sure. What are the symptoms? My scalp behind my ears gets itchy off and on
I stopped washing my hair every day a few years back.. it was drying my hair out too much since I've gotten older...
She's only talking about scalp health, clearly she knows nothing about hair health 😒 So frustrating because so many people will follow her blindly
Same here. Once a week only and heat only twice a week. My hair is long and healthy. It was in horrible shape when I fooled with it more often.
Not washing your hair will allow sebum and all kinds of pollution to clog
your hair follicles and that is the main reason for hair fall.

Would love a video on regrowing hair (scalp/brow/last) Especially for the trichotillomania population.
Before you get the light too for scalp get those hair serum first and see if that helps
Why does function of beauty have such a low trustpilot score? 2 out of 5 stars
i like the company, the products have all been excellent as has the customer service experience. Some of the best sunscreens get the worst consumer ratings as well, so I don't typically put much emphasis on consumer reviews.
I’m very happy with my Function of Beauty shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask. 😊 🧴

You are so cultured, blessings to you❤️❤️❤️
@@SeauxSavannah I've learned a lot from watching natural hair videos. Try to incorporate some tricks and tips that work for me too. Just need to wash my hair more frequently.
Marianne 💙💙
Marianne can you recommend a channel for hair care?
I JUST got my function of beauty in the mail this morning and I’m so excited!
I reverse wash daily (conditioner before shampoo) and my hair and scalp have never been happier.
Do you also condition áfter shampoo?
@@M_K_M_K_M_K Many times I do condition afterwards as well. I guess it depends on hoy dry my hair has felt and how much longer I want to spend Ain the shower.
I’ve always washed my hair every single day, but I wish I had this info then, grateful to have found this now. Oh my I need more time 😳
Girl I tried this for three days and that's the most stressed out I've been in a while.
1)Wash your scalp, not your hair,
2) then concentrate your conditioner on your ends and also
3) use a leave in that your hair likes.
My hair would take 24 hours to dry if I let it air dry that way 😂 wow. I wish it dried that easily. I use a diffuser with medium heat.
Same! I got anxiety when she clipped her hair up, thinking about the middle of my hair still being wet if I did that.
Exactly!!!! Me too 🤣🤣🤣
I actually can't believe she pinned her hair back up after it was freshly washed, naturally dried,, with that beautiful wave... like guUuUuuUuRrRrL, let that hair shine. She's got gorgeous locks. Show it off!!!
İts normaly a sign from dry hair. İ had that as İ went blond. İ would look to find a way to get some hydration for my hair.
its a sign of damaged hair
A lot of it is hormonal and androgens. Menopause wrecks havoc on skin and hair.
The thyroid also plays a huge part. It starts internally. If youre unbalanced inside and your hormones all over the place no external remedies will correct the hair issues.
Dr Dray, how often do you wash your sleeping cap? And does it ever cause acne breakouts on your forehead where the band is?
1. Shampoo and condition every night using gentle hydrating products.
2. Satin cover your hair at night to avoid hair shaft breakage.
3. At home laser machine for prolonged hair growth phase.
I love washing my hair everyday.
so nice of you to turn off the water when conditioning your hair!
Yes, please on hair thinning styles. Also, what about reviews on various products used to help hide thinning like the various fiber powders or root sprays out there. Thank you!
I'd love to air dry my hair but I keep getting a cold or a headache if I let damp hair sit on my scalp 😔 help... Any tips?
My hair has never been as good as it is since I've started washing it every day. Super healthy, sleek and shiny! Drives people who like to say that 'wAshinG yOur haiR EvErydaY iS SO baD' crazy mad lol.
Daily washing is probably only good for type one and two hair types. The over manipulation of type 3 and 4 might cause breaking. Also what’s the point is using a hair mask then shampooing the conditioning agents the next night?
Yes please on hair thinning, styles...
I know you mentioned not using hair dyes, what do you think of color depositing shampoos or semi-permanent dyes. I use both of these products and do not use dyes that require peroxide. I also don't use styling products, and very rarely use any sort of heat to my hair.
hey Dr Dray,
I notice in the beginning of the video you recommend not to brush/comb wet hair.
Absolutely agree with all the other hair tips, including avoiding heat styling as much as possible and keeping the ends healthy with conditioning.
I'm so grateful for your informative videos Dr Dray. With love from India 🇮🇳
Hi Dr. Dray! Can you do a video on the effects, pros and cons of using heat on hair? There is a lot of conflicting information on whether air drying or hooded hair drying or blow drying/diffusing is better for hair health. Can you expand on those points for us?
Wow!! haven’t watched my fave Dr on YT in forever it feels and just came here to see what was new!!! Your hair looks amazing Doc!!!!
How often did you trim? I cannot get away from a styling tool right now. It looks awful without a straightener.
I also had one more question about Laurie
Lauric acid, in coconut and cocoa.
