Different hair types need different care. When I was fallowing that myth my hair looked terrible and greasy. Now I wash my hair every day and it looks amazing 🤩
I’m glad Dr Dray clarified that while washing hair every day is fine for a lot of people, it isn’t for everyone. My hair is so dry and I’ve seen a ton of improvement by going a few days between washes instead of every day like I used to. I wash twice a week, which is the perfect amount for me. Any longer and I start getting greasy hair, but go any shorter regularly and my ends start looking really bad. While a lot of people can wash every day and be fine, that isn’t the case 100% of the time.
i'm so glad you mentioned the first one bc if *one* more person tells me it's bad for my hair that i wash it everyday or that "all i have to do is train it" i'm going to explode. i've tried "training it" numerous times for years (including during quarantine) & it never, ever adjusts. some people just have an oily scalp y'all 😅😅 it's hereditary for me
That's interesting, I have heard other haircare people say that you should shampoo as infrequently as you can without being gross haha so if it's everyday then that is fair enough! I also have oily skin and probably scalp too so I'm hoping it gets better with age!
I m using littleexttra rosemary reactivate hair growth serum from two weeks. Here is my review: 1- Great mix of ingredients 2- Noticeable results in just 2 weeks that I got from it 3- Lovely bottle with spray pump and quality packaging 4- Non-sticky and simple to use
Many of my friends are trying reactivate hair growth serum these days, and a good number of them have said that it is benefiting them in growing new hair and controlling hair fall.
I was searching for a hair growth serum and litleextra reactiivvate hair growth serum looked interesting as the ingredients seemed really beneficial. It contains Redensyl, Rosemary and a variety of other effective ingredients. These ingredients are well-known for promoting hair growth. I started using it and I think it appears to lessen hair fall. It is lightweight and non-greasy, so it can be applied easily. With consistent use of about two and a half months, I can see good hair growth and new growth of baby hairs.
Your suggestions are fantastic. I was struggling with hair fall, but then I started using the reeactivate serum along with coocoonion shampoo together. In just a couple of months, I am seeing a great difference in the thickness of my hair. I can tell it's effective!
Okay, as someone who is crazy about hair care and has very long and healthy hair for years, I was skeptical about the video, but actually I was surprised! Everything said in the video is true and I'm glad finally someone with a bigger platform is trying to stop the spread of these myths. Like dr Dray said, wash your hair everyday if your scalp needs it. Trim the ends only if your hair needs it. Observe your hair and how it looks after certain products. Silicones are not that bad and actually they're great for protecting the end of your hair or whenever you feel like your hair is more prone to breakage. One more thing I'd add is that yes, your hair does not get used to products, but it may need change in the ingredients. For instance, your hair is supposed to have a balance between proteins, humectants and emollients. So if you use only one conditioner with mostly emollients, your hair will lose its volume, it will be heavy and it will turn into thick strands of hair. On the other hand, if you use too many humectants, your hair will be frizzy, puffy etc. That's why I recommend having a couple of conditioners to keep PEH balance. BTW. I do not know if I recommend the function of beauty. Just read about them on reddit and the ingredients they put before buying.
I appreciate your points and that you put so much into writing this. It’s really helpful! For what’s in Function of Beauty I have found that I can find better if I’m supposed to be paying a dollar a wash. I’ve been the happiest with Redken Acid Bond. But we’re all different and needs different things.
Function of beauty is so overly sponsored online and, for me, the products were not good. I was so so disappointed by their shampoo. The conditioner was ok, but I still have half a bottle of the shampoo as I just couldn’t use it anymore. I have gone back to my kerastase and pureology. (Also when I tried to leave a review, it never appeared online. Which explains the good trust pilot reviews).
I tried it too and was not super impressed. I actually liked the shampoo but not the conditioner. I’m very particular about conditioner and it didn’t fit the bill. I canceled my subscription after the first use.
I think they are expensive too. I don't spend big money on shampoo, I just get it when its discounted. I use anything shampoo wise and love anti dandruff shampoo. I'm not fussy though.
Yes, same! I tried to go sulfate free for my wavy/curly hair, but my hair was disgusting for a year and I had to go back to sulfates. My hair is healthy now and my waves/curls are beautiful.
@@karleyjojo Do you mind sharing what helped your hair? I have wayv hair type but it's been very dry and hence frizzy and nothing has worked much for me. :(
I appreciate the information. I recall a lot of these myths were instilled in beauty school. A lot of stylists are taught misinformation because hair care products are great sources of revenue for salons/stylists.
My hair started thinning years ago. I started using sulfate free shampoo and cone free conditioner.I also quit coloring !My hair has never been healthier. I think if I’d kept going the way I was, I’d be bald by now. I’m 67 and I have long hair past my bra strap.
More people need to watch this video. There's so much misinformation about shampoo and hair washing going around that people are recommending to not use shampoo. While that may work for some people, maybe people with drier scalps, for someone like me with sebbhoreic dermatitis on my scalp, that is the worst advice I could receive. Ever since I started washing my scalp more I noticed my scalp is in better condition and my hair looks fuller. I swear at one point it was thinning because I wasn't using shampoo often enough. Now it looks great again
I wish that you was my dermatologist. I feel like my dermatologist doesn’t care a lot about her patients like you do. The first time that I saw her, which was to go on Accutane, she wanted me to buy a $100 facial lotion that she created and she knew that I was on Medicaid so she should have known that I wouldn’t be able to afford something that high in price. She is the only dermatologist in my city that takes my insurance so I have no choice in trying to find a different dermatologist.
Wow, sorry to hear that! Mine usually does mention ingredients and only once mentioned a brand (which was not hers). So, I agree with Carol, try to ask the active ingredient!
I went to mine twice. The second time (I walked an hour to get there) they asked if I was using the medicine,I said yes. Then they said that was it & charged me $70. Never went back.
If you're going in for something like accutane, ask for the active ingredients. At pharmacy you can ask for a generic(some pharmacies will consult with your doctor to switch to one) buy it should get you out of using whatever $100 cream she's recommending. Unless it doesn't have a generic or you have other health concerns.
I hate when people ask me how I grew my hair out, and when I say “just don’t cut it” they get all angry talking about how that doesn’t work and is damaging 🙄
long hair remind me of old mountain women who religious believes do not cut hair. how nasty long hair is for real young people as i see this old terolls with lng hair an weigh 200 lbs. cut hair tacky sues
@@tomsanders4484 omg thank you ill go cut my hair for you right now i mean what was i thinking haveing long beautiful hair...lol you couldn't handle a woman with long hair!!
One of the myths, shampoos to use for hair loss, is a desperate attempt, for those of us with thinning hair, to find help for this situation. I know the various shampoo companies that claim this, know it too. It’s very disheartening to hear there’s nothing, other than prescriptions and monoxidil, to help.
I buy liasion bond repair shampoo and conditioner (and have been since 2021) that promotes hair growth and it REALLY WORKS!! I have so much new hair growth, baby hairs, and regrowth in places that I was thinning due to tight hair styles. It doesn't claim to grow hair but claims to promote hair growth. So I would say it's not necessarily a myth at all.
Thank you! I have always felt bad about washing my hair every day or every other day thinking that it’s “bad” for my hair but my hair is thin and straight and gets oily quickly. Yay! Now I can feel good about washing my hair every day. And it makes sense our hair is dead so why would getting trims at the bottom affect the growth. If you have split ends then yes cut them off but if not, getting trims all the time won’t do anything. Preach dr dray! ❤️
I know it's probably too much, but most days I feel the need to wash my hair twice a day, in the morning and at night. Granted, I live in Brazil, so its very hot, and besides, I must have some kind of condition that I am still unaware of, because I'm always feeling so hot and sweaty ALL THE TIME, even when everyone else around me is feeling just fine. It's really bothersome, really. I can't imagine what it will be like for me when I hit menopause. I have severe seborhea in my scalp and itchiness also. Once a doctor told me I should wash my hair every single day and it made it a LOT better, because my scalp really cannot tolerate not being washed frequently. And if I'm feeling hot and sweaty I feel so botherered and miserable. So having my hair freshly washed helps me feel as if my whole body temperatura is cooler.
Hey girl, I’m sure there’s a lot of medical conditions out there, but I resonate with feeling hot and sweaty all the time despite people around me being okay, and feeling like I need to shower twice a day. I have hyperthyroidism which is the reason I feel hot all the time. I suggest that being one of the things you maybe ask your doctor to check for!
@@danikasea9711 Thank you for sharing sweetie! My mom actually has hypothyroidism, so from time to time I have it checked. I often feel like I'm on menopause but I'm just 30 😂 Thank you again for replying, lots of love and have a great week ❤️💕😊
I did the no poo method for 8 months and destroyed my hair! The hair stylist said my hair was totally protein deficient and to use egg white masks. I had to get a lot cut off due to the damage. Now I wash it every other day and use conditioner and a heat protectant.
1. You can shampoo everyday (if you can) 2. There’s nothing such as “grow hair” shampoo, consistent cleansing of scalp helps with hair loss and dandruff 3. Frizzy and Unmanageable hair can be caused by too much moisture (conditioner for the end of hair only) 4. Wet hair is more sensitive 5. Coconut oil is recommended (before shower) or put it at the end of the hair 6. Cutting/Trimming doesn’t affect the growth of hair. It doesn’t help with hair loss. You can cut the part of breakage hair if you want
THANK YOU for myth #1! I have long healthy hair and I wash it every single day yet lots of people gasp when I tell them that I wash my scalp every single day, otherwise the dirt and oils cause me hair loss.
I tried for YEARS to go days between washes because I bought in to the myth that daily washing would harm my hair. Now that I've been washing daily my hair has never looked better!!! I LOVE my Function of Beauty!!! I'll never go back 💜
So glad to hear this. Scalp health is hair health. Not washing grime and grease off of it seems counterintuitive for good hair. Great content as always!
I wish you would have addressed the fact that when you have split ends (which is inevitable) those splits can travel up the hair shaft, continuously splitting, and then breaking 3, 4 or 5 inches up from the bottom of your hair. This breakage then makes it APPEAR like your hair isn't growing which is why a lot of people find their hair grows "faster" when it's trimmed regularly. The reality is by getting regular trims you're preventing that split end from doing more damage.
If the damage is inevitable as you said then trims are not preventing anything, trims are strictly for the hairs appearance by creating better shape/symmetry it’s not preventing the inevitable.
Thank you! What youtubers said that I should wash my hair once a week did not work for me personally. My hair felt extremely greasy and fell out too much when not washed. So I continued as I normally did, using daily shampoo and my hair regained its strength.
From a very long, thin and rarely trimed hair girl and impossible to wash less than once every other day without getting crazy scratching my head : THANK YOU !!!
I'd love a video on hair care ingredients - which to look for for different hair concerns and which to steer clear of. It's so so difficult to find accurate information on hair care and even more difficult to then translate that into what to buy and what to avoid!
I have tried so many times to not shampoo as often. I’m just getting over it again. It’s been 5 months - since Jan - that I have been trying to hair wash once a week. My scalp never stopped producing oil. Now I am back to every other day and I’m much happier.
I wash my hair every single day and I love it. I Hace been doing it for about 55 year. I’m 65 years old and I have always shampoo my hair every single day. I just can’t leave the house if I don’t shower and wash my hair. Everyone complements my hair. I get a hair cut at least every 3 months. My hair grows very fast and it’s very healthy. I don’t know why people only wash their hair ones a week. I just can’t
Thanks for the hair care tips and busting some of the myths. As someone with fine, thin hair that's past my shoulders, I'm always interested in ways to help keep it healthy. Appreciate your hard work. Happy Wednesday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a peaceful evening. 💟
I do put Carol's Daughter conditioner on my scalp and not just the ends of my hair. I don't know if it's different than other conditioners, but it really feels great on my scalp.
I keep hearing blow drying does not damage your hair. I stopped 2 and a half years ago and my hair has never looked better. I'm a 55 year old male with hair to my waist and I thought at my age it was not possible. I also shampoo everyday .
I dry mine partially with a heat protectant before bed(shoulder blade length fine, wavy hair), because I have sensory issues and it keeps me awake if it's too damp.
I always laugh when I hear “split ends won’t grow”. I do have my hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks though. The trim does get rid of the split ends and makes it look healthy and “bouncy”.
The end itself will never grow since hair grows from the follicle. But the ends will only become more damaged. I’d say if your hair is in generally healthy condition, you can trim it 1-2x every year, maybe even none if it’s completely “virgin.” But most of us are exposed to damage just from the environment, day to day mechanical damage (if we style it up or pull it back) etc.
@@CL-fs3kt if she just said she never experienced her split ends traveling up the shaft, how can you tell her about HER experience as if y’all have the same head ? 😂 you also learned about trims in the internet. I never cut my 3b hair and my ends are still moisturized and healthy 😭
@@ash00001 She didn’t say her split ends don’t travel up, she just said split ends in general don’t travel up which isn’t true. It’s like when you get a run in your stockings. Unless you never go outside and never touch your hair, that’s what happens. Your hair can still be healthy and have a few split ends. LOL
Tried it several times lol, I was miserable. Now I wash every day or every two days. I hate having dirty hair. People who say you can train your hair = people who say your armpits are detoxing while switching to natural deodorant
@@mahnikt tried it for 2 years with different methods and products. Didn’t work *whatsoever*. I do believe most folks though when they say training worked for them.
I think this mostly comes from different hair types having different needs. And because the Curly Girl Method specifically was pushing this idea- and they get a lot of their hair are ideas from the natural hair movement. Which means that a lot of those tips are great for people with very dry, very curly or textured hair. But not so much for anyone else. For me, I wash my hair every week or two. But my hair is super dry, as is my scalp. I never appear oily. Ever. Which is pretty handy when you’re disabled and can’t wash your hair often anyway- no one can tell when I lay washed my hair. It’s not as soft by the end of my wash cycle, but it’s never oily. In fact, I put leave in conditioner and extra hair oils in to it every couple of days, and I need to. So for some people, washing less often is definitely better for their hair. Shampoo can be pretty harsh on very dry (as on oil-free, not as in water free. Just like skin) hair. As can getting it soaking wet, because water swells the hair shaft, which makes it more vulnerable to breakage. So if you have very dry and very curly hair, washing less often is the way to go. But straight hair, or hair that isn’t super dry- washing more often is the way to go. I really dislike when people give proclamations that they say apply to everyone. That’s never the case, because everyone has different needs, and the best thing to do is to work out what works best for you and your specific situation and goals.
My scalp becomes too oily if I shampoo my hair every day but I do 2 alternative day gap Shampoo,my parents believe less you shampoo, better for the Scalp but my scalp would freak out Happy Thursday Dr Dray ❤
I had the same problem before but found out It only happened because products I used dried my scalp too much(if you are drying your skin it produces more oil to protect itself). I just switched to gentle shampoos and now can wash my hair daily and my hair looks and grows much better. Another solution is to use hydrating scalp tonic but it's better to switch shampoo first.
I'm grateful for this video. I'm going to start washing my scalp daily, but keep to washing the rest of my hair with shampoo every 2-3 days. I stopped washing my hair daily a few years back thinking it would make it healthy, but my scalp actually starts to hurt after a day or two if I don't wash it. It literally aches!
Nioxin set helped me to grow my hair, and people are asking me what happened why my hair got thicker. And I can see new tiny hair one inch long all over my head. So I found treatment that really works for me.
Could you maybe make a video going into further detail on moisturizing hair and hydral fatigue, please? Also maybe a curly hair care myths like this one. Thank you!
Yes, please! I have wavy/curly hair and my hair is so frizzy lately even with added strong med/hold gel from Curlsmith and Purology shampoo and Condioner…
I've tried shampooing every other day and it was a no-go for my hair (coarse, thick, straight). It left my scalp and hair dry, and too voluminous for my liking. I discovered my hair looks best on the second and thrid day, so I switched to shapooing up to 2 times/week (3 times if hot weather/I'm sweating a lot), and haven't gone back. So I definitely agree that shampooing frequency depends on hair type and there isn't a one-size-fits-all.
It’s not the shampooing. It’s the blow drying. Many can’t wash and go. I’ve got an insane party In in the back of my head roots to ends lol. Then straight at the front. Air dry no worky for me.
My hair is smiliar to your. What I would do is gently pet the hair with towel and then little bit blow dry than put my hair in heatless curly hair styles . And a few hours later my hair would have nice waves/curls .
Pls do a myths part 2! This was great! Pls address the you can “train” your hair to produce less oil by only shampooing it every couple of weeks. I’ve heard this a lot through the years. Didn’t think oil production of the scalp could be “trained”?
You just get used to the feeling of a dirty scalp. Ew. Just wash your hair. We have lovely products now that don’t harm your hair. When I was a kid, we only washed our hair once a week because shampooing frequently actually did harm hair. That’s because our shampoo was basically dish soap, harsh. I do remember how smelly my hairband got from all the dirt and oils. Now the shampoo is actually good for your hair and scalp. Old wives tales just keep hanging on even when circumstances change.
I wash my hair 1-2 x per week, but it's not the daily shampooing that I'm avoiding, it's the daily blow-drying or other heat styling. Air drying is just not feasible for me.
It's CRAZY how these influencers come on TH-cam acting like "I only wash my hair once a week!" is some kind of accomplishment. No, sis. No. If you work out (and you should be), that's naaaaaaasty. Please, please, PLEASE wash that sweat OUT of your hair. Don't let that salty sweat sit on your scalp. It is not good for your scalp or your hair.
I tried once to wash my scalp every 2-3 days. It was a nightmare and my hair was getting really bad so I'd never do that again. Daily wash for me, sometimes if I'm too lazy I just skip a day, but mostly every single day. The ends I wash them once a week or every two weeks, idk, when they feel like there's build-up and need to be clarified. My hair is pretty long and very healthy and shiny, it's grown a little more than 30cm in 2 years (11.8 inches). That's an average of 1,25cm a month (0.49 inches) which is pretty average. So yep, if you feel your hair and scalp better daily washing, do it.
I think that people say that because heat opens the hair shaft, so they think that cold will close it. But the problem is that water in general opens the hair shaft and makes it more prone to breaking… I don’t think switching the temperature will really do anything. Personally I think it’s a myth
My hair is thick and oily and I’ve been trying to shampoo only twice a week because I definitely thought shampooing everyday was bad. Valuable info right from the get go, thank you 🙏🏽
My hair is fine and oily, I wash my hair daily. I remember my mother only washed her hair weekly. As she aged her thick hair thinned. I believe partly due to hairspray buildup on the scalp. The scalp is the soil for our hair if it’s bombarded with chemicals that can’t be good. If I didn’t wash my face daily what a mess my face would be at my age!😂
I also have oily hair and washed it everyday for years. I changed hairdressers and the new hairdresser suggested that I try a texturising hairspray when I blow my hair dry. I spray it on the roots and style as usual. It's called Sexy Hair Texture High Tide. Sally's Beauty Supply carries it but they never have it in stock. So I order from Amazon and it's about $20 a can. This product allows me to go 3 days in between Washings, makes my hair feels so soft and wonderful. The can lasts me about a month-and-a-half to two months. Obviously if you have short hair you probably would use less. It's been a game-changer for me and you might want to give it a try.
If you haven't already, you could also try ditching the conditioner if your hair is as short as it is in the picture there. Might work better for you. If the oils have no trouble reaching the ends, as it shouldn't with short straight hair and a regular amount of oil production, then it's generally not necessary and makes the scalp oily quicker, which can lead to some annoying stuff sooner. Hair should still come out nice and soft.
Good Morning Dr Dray, Could you please make a video about PFA’s in personal care products. I’m especially freaked out because they were found in 85% of waterproof mascaras, Over 50% of long wear/ waterproof foundations, waterproof eyeliners, long wear lip products etc. Worst of all, the concerning ingredients are often not listed on the ingredient list. 😟 I would love to hear your thoughts. thanks 🙏🏻
Salicylic acid based shampoo have done wonders for my irritated itchy scalp. Its a regular shampoo with sodium laureth sulfate it also has panthenol and niacinamide nothing fancy .My scalp isn't red and irritated and my hair is healthy and shinny.I also don't use shampoos ,conditioners and masks with silicones. From time to time l use Ogx silicone serum with argan oil on the ends of my hair. I wash my hair almost every day and I have no problems.💜
So I’m not a doctor I’m just a cosmetologist but I will say I have seen people have personal results with hair regrowth from tea tree shampoos/ oils applied to the scalp combined with gentle dry brushing to stimulate the follicles. Yes, our current medical literature doesn’t say that it works. But my bigger question is, have they even been peer reviewed studies saying that they *do NOT* work. If we don’t have conclusive evidence saying that they do not work, we cannot rule them out. Also, rogaine does work quite well. It’s a topical hormone applied to the scalp but like any orher medication for it to work you need to use it continually. If you stop using it, it stops working and the regrown hair will fall out along with any hair it kept from falling out.
I also don’t agree about not washing your hair. My stylist actually recommended it because my hair was so dry. So I don’t wash my hair everyday and same with my daughter who has curly curly hair, i can tell a difference. So I definitely agree with you.
@@meadowsmama94 I agree hardcore on that as well (as a licensed cosmetologist) the problem with derm is they are looking at medical studies and most people don’t go to a dermatologist unless they have a problem. I see people with and without problems, so it gives me a wide variety of people to work with. I think how often you should be washing your hair in my professional opinion is depending on your hair type and what issues you have. If you hair is colored and bleached, definitely not every single day. If you have ethnic hair, definitely not everyday. If you have excessive oilyness or a skin condition like dandruff, or eczema, you probably need to wash it everyday with a specialized shampoo (medicated). It’s down to personal choice, personal preference and your actual body. Everyone’s body and body chemistry is different, and will react different ways. Try different things, do what works for you best. I think the problem is she’s probably working with a lot of people with severe dandruff, or scalp eczema when I only deal with a handful of people with that and most of my clients have relatively normal scalps and not too many scalp conditions.
@@Banferti she said in the video just that. Shampoo as you feel you hait tolerates it, but there are a lot of people that end up in derm consultations for yeast because they think shampooing is bad.
@Rain Raçhel its more like, if you wash it a lot, your scalp will produce oil more regularly, whereas if you only wash once a week it'll only produce enough for then, it works there's tons of people who do it
I think you can get from daily to twice a week if its oily but not to a week. My scalp gets itchy and irritated if I leave it longer than 4 to 5 days x
I'm on month 2 of using IRestore. I got one a couple of months ago using your link. So far I have noticed a good bit of reduction in hair loss. Not seeing regrowth yet but hopeful.
coming from someone with curly hair, they're fine as long as you use a clarifying (sulfate) shampoo occasionally to remove build-up. hope my input was helpful :)
Sulfate-Free shampoos are good for people who have itchy scalp after washing hair with Sulfate-shampoo, and the natural shampoos are not always gentler than Sulfateones they can be harsh or mild too
As a curly girl, I avoid harsh cleansers at all cost. I don't feel the need to use them, my scalp isn't dirty, washing once per week with a sulfate-free cleanser is enough. I follow the curly girl method by Lorraine Massey, therefore only use water soluble products, so I don't get buildup (most people claiming they follow cgm actually use heavy oil and butter based products + waaay too many of them and then expect gentle cleansers to remove it... and when it doesn't work, they run around blaming cgm... sadly...)
I use only natural shampoos, (because they make my hair look the best). I don't know why that is, I never read much into what sulfates etc are. But I know that natural cosmetics on my skin will remain my second choice. Just not as potent as regular products.
My understanding is that the one sulfate to probably avoid is sodium LAURYL sulfate. That sulfate is the one scientists use as a comparison when testing the irritancy of ingredients. She has said that sodium lauryl sulfate and to a lesser extent sodium laureth sulfate can be drying especially if you have sensitive/dry/eczema on the scalp and can cause more itching and discomfort.
I keep of thinking how some Victorian women washed their hair only once a month with an egg wash, although I am aware that they kept their hair clean in other ways I am very thankful for my shower and my hair products 😂
Egg is actually good for the hair. My gran used to use egg white for s face mask (mixed with honey) and egg yolk for her hair. And I occasionally still do this aswell.
Still come back to this video. I wash my hair once a day now, particularly at night when I'm done working and being out in the world. I used to wash my hair every 3 days and use dry shampoo, sometimes going longer between washes if I was lazy. I have really thick, color treated hair. Turns out due to hormones I have an over production of oil on my scalp that leads to redness, inflammation, intense itching, and flakes. My lengths still being super thick and dry. Washing daily in cool water calms my scalp and I compensate by using a rich conditioner, and a good leave in conditioner/heat protectant and then finish with an oil on my ends when I'm done styling.
What about hair oils? In our culture, oiling the hair is a big thing. We would always be made to oil our hair (coconut oil mostly on the scalp and the lengths) before shampoo as kids, and that's something that I still continue to do well into my adult life as well. I have dry, dandruff prone scalp, and my dermat had advised me to stop oiling my hair and prescribed me a keto + zinc shampoo. So I did that for many years, but my dandruff would get worse in the dry winters. So now for the last year or so, I have gone back to oiling my hair overnight and washing off with shampoo in the morning. And believe it or not, my dandruff has improved since! Now if I don't oil my hair before shampoo, my scalp gets so much more drier, and dandruff gets just so much worse. And as for hair growth, in my personal experience, when I use certain type of oils like some oils from the Ayurvedic clinic, it does make my hair grow faster.
She has a video on coconut oil! She said it does in fact reduce breakage and coconut oil masks can be good for the hair before a wash! Not sure about what it does for dandruff but if it works for you then keep doing it :)
I’ve always heard this, but I never understand it. I hear that your hair is constantly shedding and replacing itself naturally and that you’re supposed to lose 100-200 hairs a day. This doesn’t make sense to me because it would take years for even one hair to grow completely back the length of the one I lost. So how do I still have a head full of hair losing that much hair per day?
Because while some of your hair shed others still grows at the same time. You have more har growing than hair shedding at what given time. Cycles are done in such a way that you can't see the difference. It's like plane. Although gravity exist and a plane should fall on the grown at the same time there is an other force, a stronger one that maintain it in the air if that makes sense for you. When you notice that your losing hair density that means that your loosing too much hair than normal and there is something going on...
I used to wash my oily scalp every day, I now wash my hair twice a week. My hair has actually grown more as I always thought my hair had a length that it just never grew past- now my hair is longer, shinier and healthier from not washing it every day.
@Silver & Cold I washed mine every day most of my life since you could fry chicken in it by the next morning & it only grew to a certain length & stopped. I finally trained my hair to quit producing so much oil so now I can go 3-4 days & now it has grown 1/2 way down my back & I actually put a hair oil on the ends every night which blows my mind as I would have never put any kind of oil even near my hair before. 😂
I have no hair so I’m watching for the purposes of visual serenity. I like the word false and actually yelp it quite often. Love that shade of red your wearing but based on what you said the other day about your lighting changing the color of what you are wearing from the viewers perspective you might be in yellow for all I know. Lots of great information on hair in this video today Dray really top notch!!! ☕️🧴💃🏻⭐️🌸
This is honestly the first time i have heard anyone say we need to wash our hair everyday.... I have wavy hair and a lot of it, washing it every day would take sooo much more time
It's prolonged exposure to moisture (like the humidity in the air) that causes the most damage. Moisture causes the hair shaft swell, which opens up the cuticle, making the hair brittle, which leads to damage. Water from washing isn't much of an issue, as long as you're following with something conditioning and aren't being aggressive. Conditioner coats the hair and smooths down the cuticle, which acts as a sort of barrier to help keep out excess moisture.
Water from washing also damages hair obviously as your hair is soaking wet for some time hence disturbing the positioning of the hair cuticles. You can minimize that by using a conditioner or a leave-in conditioner or by applying coconut oil before shampoing. The sun damages hair the wind damages hair, time damages hair but we need to live... Hair is dead so pretty much everything damage it so you can only minimise the damage. We have to wash our hair so just take preventative measures.
When she says wash you hair frequently she’s referring to the scalp when she says avoid too much moisture she’s referring to the hair shaft. It is contradictory but That’s why she mentions the helpfulness of coconut oil and only washing your hair as frequently as your hair texture will tolerate
Another victim of pandemic hair loss here, and I get videos in my feed now of other people going through hair loss that are using derma rollers on their scalp. This seems like such a scary and damaging thing to do to an already stressed area, but I was wondering what you thought of it?
@@toomanynotes1 She mentions this in the video, Microneedling: What you need to know, from a dermatologist. Also, checkout the channel, the hair loss show and their videos, Derma-Rolling Q+A and Where Does Derma-Rolling Fit In The Management Of Hair Loss?
Something to numb the scalp would probably be used. I know for the face, some recommend numbing creams but some say numbing creams will cause blood vessels near the surface of skin to contract. Collagen formation relies on good blood circulation and if you take that away by using a numbing cream then you defeat the purpose of needling to induce collagen.
I watched a TH-camr this week say water is “really” bad for hair, really bad!😘 In her defense, I can tell the difference in the water and it’s effects on my hair since I travel weekly.
Hard water is really bad for your hair; chlorinated water is bad for your hair; salt water is bad for your hair. My guess is that the water in Flint, Mich. is bad for your hair!
Suggestion for Part 2: "Train" scalp/hair to not need as many washings? This, supposedly, entails going longer between each washing until you have it where you want it. I had a hairdresser who "trained" her scalp/hair to only need washing once a month by (according to her) going from washing her hair every day to washing it every other day (for a designated period of time-say, a month), then she'd wash every three days (same thing - for a designated period of time), then every fours days...You get the picture. For the record - that crap didn't work for me! I was ripping my scalp to shreds scratching there was so much build up by the time I got to the every 4 days washings. (She didn't use hair products that would "stay" - for instance, hair spray. I don't/didn't use them either.)
You don't need it trimmed every week to 'help it grow' and thats not what hairdressers say. Hairdressers and stylists suggest a trim every 6-12wks so that it is bare minimum needing to be cut. Most people now use heat products which causes split ends and damaged cuticles (which in turn then causes more split ends!)... so the reason its suggested for this length of time is so that you don't leave it 6-12months and then have a panic attack when they ask for a tidy up and removal of dry ends and we say 'you are going to need about 3inches off'
I was going, “But, that’s not what stylists mean!” at that one’s too. Thank you for clarifying! That’s what I always understood. I was told by my hairdresser that you’re cutting it, not to help it grow, but to remove split ends so they don’t keep splitting up the hair shaft, make it look lanky and scraggly-and like you said, needing way more cut off. I thought people would see that it obviously doesn’t affect your hair follicle when you cut the end; it’s just about preserving the length you have & having what’s there look healthy & thicker.
@@eobrien1 exactly. Your hair may continue to grow HOWEVER if you don't look after it it winds up looking scraggly and limp. And all around a mess! My hair at the moment may have grown about 8inches in 9months BUT its a mess as I've not been able to get it cut and I had a baby so it's went through a lot or hormonal changes! So its getting 3inches off it tomorrow.
Thank you for this video. I'm suffering from hair loss because i'm a breastfeeding mom and people around me had mentioned 4 out of 5 myths you mentioned here. And i'm doing these things for a week now. 😅
I think it’s bad to wash your hair every day but that’s to racks own. I like Lange dry shampoo only cause when it says clear they mean I love their products.
So here's what puzzles me: You say it's ok to shampoo daily BUT both the hairdresser I'd go to /when possible/ and professional hairdressers here on TH-cam say & have said to only wash the hair once a week. And that's how I do - when showering in the week I don't even wet the hair & wash & shampoo it only once a week. Which should I trust?
The biggest determinant is hair type. Some people with curlier hair have a tendency toward dryness while others (with an oily or dandruff prone scalp, they can be one and the same). Need to use medicated shampoos and conditioner to strengthen the hair. Aside from avoiding tight hairstyles for traction alopecia, washing with lukewarm to cool water, and choosing a hair conditioner that suites your hair type, there's no good reason to recommend everyone only wash their hair once a week. I can see if they're recommending fewer washes from people who have hair color. Every color lifts and strips the protein structure in the hair shaft, other fixatives and then an occlusive moisturizer (usually a conditioner) goes overtop to protect everything. Once you've lifted the cuticle, there is nothing that will truly repair the hair; you have to cut it off and start with new growth. Everything, from washing to recoloring will further damage it. Brad Mundo and the like make their living fixing and pointing out how people screw up their hair, so from their perspective, showering less, and using only recommended products (which are designed to play well with the treatments they use), is their strategy of least harm.
Ok so if you don't feel like your scalp is oily and itchy plus if you don't use much styling products you can do it once a week. However if you are kind of pushing yourself to wash them that rarely, resorting to dry shapoo or hiding the oil with certain hairstyles or hats it's best if you make it more frequent. The thing is washing it frequently is good for the scalp to get rid of excess oil, product buildup and dirt. However not quite for the hair ends as it causes hygral fatigue. You need to find your middle ground that works for your type of hair and your type of scalp. There is no golden rule for everyone when it comes to how frequently we should wash our hair. I could not wash my hair once a week, I'd be walking around looking and feeling dirty and most probably get dandruff.
Hairdressers are not exactly qualified to discuss problems relating to scalp health or hair loss, whereas dermatologists are. For example, you wouldn’t go to a hairdresser to diagnose or treat scalp psoriasis or alopecia. Also, if you ask your hairdresser why they say shampooing the scalp daily is bad, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to point to anything other than anecdotal evidence or online articles to back their assertions up, whereas derms will be able to cite peer-reviewed papers and their textbooks. This is not to diminish hairdressers, it’s just that they have a different area of expertise :)
Thanks all for the quick replies! I've seen different attempts to explain why not shampoo daily and I'm just lost at what to trust. I do get dandruff somewhere mid-week so I might try and switch to twice per week so it's not daily but still not long enough to dandruff.
I regret all the greasy hair days I lived through because of the “washing your hair once a week” myth
That shit made my hair fall out at one point- ridiculous lol
Omg and all the days I let people see me with the slickness of it.💀
@Silver & Cold I noticed that too! Dr Dray saved meeee
I think washing your hair less would be for people with textured hair.
Saaaaame!! 😩
i’ve tried “training” my hair so many times for years and it never worked out. now that i wash my hair daily it’s never been better! :)
Here is my review:
1- Great mix of ingredients
2- Noticeable results in just 2 weeks that I got from it
3- Lovely bottle with spray pump and quality packaging
4- Non-sticky and simple to use
I've also been dedicatedly using the Reactivate Hair Growth Serum, and my hair is feeling much more volume and appears significantly denser too.
serum of reactivate manages significant hair fall in two weeks. Personally, it decreased my hairfall by 80%, but the remaining 20% was still there.
Many of my friends are trying reactivate hair growth serum these days, and a good number of them have said that it is benefiting them in growing new hair and controlling hair fall.
reactivate serum for hair growth when applied daily for 2 months gave me results, yet for my brother, it took him three months. I have no idea why!
Tried 3 bottles and achieved positive hair growth with reaactivate hair growth serum.
Both Redensyl and rosemary in reaactivate hair serum worked wonders for me. My hair is now thicker and fuller since using it.
Your suggestions are fantastic. I was struggling with hair fall, but then I started using the reeactivate serum along with coocoonion shampoo together. In just a couple of months, I am seeing a great difference in the thickness of my hair. I can tell it's effective!
This really works. I've been using it for a few weeks. Thanks Reacctivate hair growth Serum
The problem with this company is the price, I don’t want to pay over $50 for on 16 oz shampoo.

Ask her the active ingredient that will help you. In that way you can find options based on that ingredient.

Would you say it’s best to seek medical advice/go to the dermatologist?
Yes that's completely different than preventing hair breakoff
1. You can shampoo everyday (if you can)
2. There’s nothing such as “grow hair” shampoo, consistent cleansing of scalp helps with hair loss and dandruff
3. Frizzy and Unmanageable hair can be caused by too much moisture (conditioner for the end of hair only)
4. Wet hair is more sensitive
5. Coconut oil is recommended (before shower) or put it at the end of the hair
6. Cutting/Trimming doesn’t affect the growth of hair. It doesn’t help with hair loss. You can cut the part of breakage hair if you want

The first part is true but you don't fix by trimming, you fix by strengthening the hair

I think blow drying with cool or very low heat could work, but using high heat has to be damaging after a while.
I always laugh when I hear “split ends won’t grow”. I do have my hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks though. The trim does get rid of the split ends and makes it look healthy and “bouncy”.
I havent cut my hair for 1,5 years.. split ends also dont "travel up" i would know..
@@suides4810 They do travel up the shaft. You’re gonna notice once you cut it because the shaft will be hollow lol cut your damn hair

Most common thing I hear : You can train your hair to need washing less often.
Tried it several times lol, I was miserable. Now I wash every day or every two days. I hate having dirty hair.
People who say you can train your hair = people who say your armpits are detoxing while switching to natural deodorant
@@mahnikt it's a paradox that the *clean* movement advocates dirty hair with build up and stinky sweat.
@@mahnikt tried it for 2 years with different methods and products. Didn’t work *whatsoever*. I do believe most folks though when they say training worked for them.
Mine is this way. I only need to wash a few times. Granted I try to buy as natural as I can because we’re sensitive. But I don’t think it’s a myth

Yeah you need to do what’s best for you
It’s not the shampooing.
Maybe try finger coiling? I recommend manes by mell! She’s helped me with my frizzy hair that I thought was straight. 3B hair now :).
I’m so glad to hear you say that about trimming you can oil or maintenance your ends. I just dust when needed. 🙌
Me either… I’d have to get up two of three hours earlier to get to work
It's CRAZY how these influencers come on TH-cam acting like "I only wash my hair once a week!" is some kind of accomplishment. No, sis. No. If you work out (and you should be), that's naaaaaaasty.
Please, please, PLEASE wash that sweat OUT of your hair. Don't let that salty sweat sit on your scalp. It is not good for your scalp or your hair.
not everyone is a gym girl lmfaoo
I tried once to wash my scalp every 2-3 days. It was a nightmare and my hair was getting really bad so I'd never do that again. Daily wash for me, sometimes if I'm too lazy I just skip a day, but mostly every single day. The ends I wash them once a week or every two weeks, idk, when they feel like there's build-up and need to be clarified.
My hair is pretty long and very healthy and shiny, it's grown a little more than 30cm in 2 years (11.8 inches). That's an average of 1,25cm a month (0.49 inches) which is pretty average. So yep, if you feel your hair and scalp better daily washing, do it.
since moisture leaves hair brittle, are hyaluronic acid hair products bad for hair?
I’m a once or twice a week hair wash person. My scalp doesn’t tolerate waiting any longer than that. It works for me
What about the notion that rinsing your hair with cold water seals the hair shaft and reduces frizz? I feel like it's not true...
I think that people say that because heat opens the hair shaft, so they think that cold will close it. But the problem is that water in general opens the hair shaft and makes it more prone to breaking… I don’t think switching the temperature will really do anything. Personally I think it’s a myth
I agree. I feel I want my hair cuticles open after my shower so that my leave in absorbs better
@@brigitte9999 Your face? Because of the oily hairs falling down on your face?
If you haven't already, you could also try ditching the conditioner if your hair is as short as it is in the picture there. Might work better for you. If the oils have no trouble reaching the ends, as it shouldn't with short straight hair and a regular amount of oil production, then it's generally not necessary and makes the scalp oily quicker, which can lead to some annoying stuff sooner. Hair should still come out nice and soft.
@@Siberius- is conditioner really necessary for short men hair after shampoo?
Good Morning Dr Dray,
Could you please make a video about PFA’s in personal care products. I’m especially freaked out because they were found in 85% of waterproof mascaras, Over 50% of long wear/ waterproof foundations, waterproof eyeliners, long wear lip products etc. Worst of all, the concerning ingredients are often not listed on the ingredient list. 😟 I would love to hear your thoughts. thanks 🙏🏻
I'm sure she'll put something up. Some folks I know are waiting before they do (like Lab Muffin).
I have been suffering from sudden hair fall for two weeks now. This video is much required. Thanks🧡
Dr. Dray's hair is amazingly beautiful and amazing how quickly it grew out.
This is so opposite from the curly girl method. Makes my head spin with what’s actually the “right” way to wash or not wash if you follow the CGM.
What about people that push for less hair washing and that eventually you can train your scalp to not produce oil allowing for less frequent washing.
I just got one because it worked for one of my friends. She didn’t see hair growth until the 8 month mark! Just to let you know to keep at it.
Doc, need some inputs on natural shampoos and sulfate-free shampoos. Are they really beneficial?
coming from someone with curly hair, they're fine as long as you use a clarifying (sulfate) shampoo occasionally to remove build-up. hope my input was helpful :)
DR DRAY YOU ARE MY INSPIRATION ❤️
I wash my hair EVeryday and my mom yell “your hair will fall off”! Now I can assure her that Dr Dray it’s OK.
I don't know about that era but earlier on, before that era, people had all sorts of lice etc in their hair and wore wigs to cover them. Yuck......

This video makes me so happy 😊 I'm on a hair growth journey and so many people tell me I shouldn't wash my hair daily........its so infuriating
Do a search, dr dray hair oil. She has videos on oils for hair and skin care.
She has a video on coconut oil! She said it does in fact reduce breakage and coconut oil masks can be good for the hair before a wash! Not sure about what it does for dandruff but if it works for you then keep doing it :)
I learned to do this about ten years ago from a friend who is from Nepal. I do this in the winter time.
That’s really interesting. Thanks for sharing!
@@heredianna2496 thank you so much! Thus helps a lot!
This one really confused me... everyone else will tell you that it's not healthy to wet your hair everyday

You should really make a video where you discuss "the curly girl method" !
It'll be controversial
Thank you for now on i will shampoo whenever I need. Because it's just make me feel relieved that shampoo don't hurt hair.
This is honestly the first time i have heard anyone say we need to wash our hair everyday....
I have wavy hair and a lot of it, washing it every day would take sooo much more time
Same - my whole life would revolve around my hair if I washed it every day.
She never said anyone "needs" to wash everyday. It depends on what your hair type can tolerate.
i was gone for a few months, but im back and totally noticed your hair! looks great dr dray!
Ok, but “wash your hair daily” AND “too much moisture” i.e. water from washing, leaves hair brittle and prone to damage. This is contradictory, no?
Thank you for the added info!
She doesn't recommend do at home dermarolling. She and other derms tend to recommend going to a derm office for that.
@@db-gb5xi Right, but is microneedling an effective alopecia treatment at all? I mean, if done by a derm in-office?
@@toomanynotes1 She mentions this in the video, Microneedling: What you need to know, from a dermatologist. Also, checkout the channel, the hair loss show and their videos, Derma-Rolling Q+A and Where Does Derma-Rolling Fit In The Management Of Hair Loss?
Derms rolling the scalp just sounds so painful!!
I’d love to learn more about silicones in hair products. I’ve heard “they seal the hair and prevent moisture from getting into the hair”.
Happy Wednesday Everybody!! Have a Great Day!!
I watched a TH-camr this week say water is “really” bad for hair, really bad!😘 In her defense, I can tell the difference in the water and it’s effects on my hair since I travel weekly.
Myth #3 is just that basically.
Water IS very damaging to the hair, that‘s not up for debate, but you can’t do anything about it if you want clean hair
Water is damaging to the hair. That’s not a myth. But not cleaning the scalp regularly is worse for your hair in the long run.
Which youtuber are you talking about?
Hard water is really bad for your hair; chlorinated water is bad for your hair; salt water is bad for your hair. My guess is that the water in Flint, Mich. is bad for your hair!
Love long hair but honestly think the short hair suited Dr Dray much better
She didn’t “train” her hair. She simply got used to the feeling of a dirty scalp. (Yuck).
@@missmayflower Uuggggghhhhh!
@@missmayflower Lmbo! I seriously think that's what's going on. You hit the nail on the head!

If we wash hair everyday, won't that lead to hydral fatigue?
I thought the same thing. My long thick hair would never be dry unless I blew it out daily
It's going to vary person to person.
I think it’s bad to wash your hair every day but that’s to racks own.
I like Lange dry shampoo only cause when it says clear they mean I love their products.
@@XoXoButterflyoXoX same goes for my curly hair. I wash mine every 3 days and I feel that's fine
@@db-gb5xi I know that but generally, won't wetting of hair on daily basis lead to hydral fatigue?
@Rain Raçhel Your first statement is true but the second one is false, your hair does not need moisture, Dr Dray adressed it in this very video.
Thanks all for the quick replies! I've seen different attempts to explain why not shampoo daily and I'm just lost at what to trust. I do get dandruff somewhere mid-week so I might try and switch to twice per week so it's not daily but still not long enough to dandruff.
