This is one of the best videos on the web today!! It's so encouraging to see a gal enjoying a ride on the old D-4. I am an 85 year old senior citizen and still can recall the thrill of my first ride on a D-8 with my "big" brother. thanks for the memories.
Beautiful job. In my summer job at a highway construction company I had to clean and paint these. I bought a bottle of black model paint and small paint brush and signed my name. A fellow college student was talking to a friend of his and mentioned my name. The pal worked out in the field for the same company and replied: “I saw his name on the back of a Northwest shovel (excavator).”

Never did learn to blade smoothly tho. This sure bought back memories of the start up procedure, except the D-2 pony engine was a swine to start.
My grandfather jad a 1936 RD 4 Cat. I was bit a toddler, but whenever I heard the pony motor running in the early morning, I knew thT if I ran to the barn fast enough that I would get to sit on Grandpa's lap and ride as long as he would let me.
Three generations of my family worked in the construction industry, I was first who went down a different road. Just got my 19 year old son a 1937 Cat 22 to restore, the year my dad was born. He absolutely can't believe that my son wanted that. Lol
Nice, have a machine just like it. Side mount fuel tank because the winch that runs the over head cable system for the blade mounts there. These machines sound do good. Was rebuilt in May 1954 and still runs like a champ. You have a real gem there. Just don't misplace the "key." I mean the starting rope. Go like crazy with give forward speeds and take a nap backing up with the one for reverse.
Loved the video. My dad had a HT4. D4 with bucket instead of a blade. To this day I remember riding on it with him. This was back in the mid 60's. Now I know why he push started it with his track hoe. Much easier.

The first time I ever heard the pony motor on a cat, was on an Alaskan gold mine early 80s. When the guy started the pony motor on his D9, I thought thats the worst sounding diesel engine Ive ever heard, then the big D9 busted off, and I understood.
I would imagine that owner/operators did some upgrading. The highway construction company where I worked summers had many ex-army vehicles and I don’t ever remember seeing a side tank. A few. Years later I was covering a county commission meeting when the chairman read the line items on a bill for having a D7 repaired. It included 15 man hours to remove the fuel tank. I was stunned because with a crane on wheels I could remove one by myself in about an hour.
Gotta say. Just because you slap a paint job on something does not mean it’s been restored. There’s a giant difference. If it had been restored it wouldn’t have taken ten min to get her to start. Lol

And yet human nature takes over and folks then have to get into arguments about "who's right?" The original technical name for the starting "engine" becomes history and the diesel "engine" gets started by an engine with a dozen or more common names.
The stereo-typical woman's response to the task made me sad. She cannot take in information about the controls because she is too busy giving a women's response of giggling, looking at everybody, and being the helpless female. I don't intend to hurt her by this, just to point out that her response is what is expected of women. Then the gallant male hops aboard and she is shoved to the side where she stays.
I was thinking that as well. I guess a few lessons before the camera would have made her feel more comfortable. A dude would have jumped right on and claimed to understand everything, even if he didn't. That's why young male car insurance costs more.

if properly restored the fuel tank should be on the Left hand running board, The seat tank was not used on the D4 until the 1950's

Poor injector pressure or spray pattern the likely reason for the difficult start!
More likely that it wasn't run under compression long enough to build heat before adding fuel.
Could have idled that pop motor down probably going to throw a rod one day soon
