I know how much work went into this project. Very nice restoration! I know this is for demonstration purposes but be sure to turn off the gas on the pony engine and let it run out. It keeps the oil from being diluted. Also I recently learned to not leave the clutch disengaged while out of gear and engine running. It can cause unnecessary wear on the outer teeth on the fiber disc. Im still learning these things and I’ve been around D-2s and D-4s most of my life!
Amazing job on the restoration, love the old machines that had the pony motors. It's always a good idea to shut the fuel off to kill the pony motor instead of the switch, gas can work its way into the bottom end of the diesel engine and make for expensive repairs.
Make sure you run the pony out of fuel by turning off the fuel tap and letting it run out !!! Other wise you can flood the pony motor sump (Oil Res ) and blow out he pony bearings and blow up the pony motor !!! But you probably know that already !! I let mine run for about 6 minutes to warm her up good , without any diesel on , as it washes important oils off the cylinder walls before actual start up, leading to premature wear !! Only bloke who Ive seen start these correctly is SQUATCH 253 !! well worth the watch on TH-cam !!! great job on your resto Too !!
Beautiful job. My wife and her family are from Auburn, California. I brought my wife to Colorado to live and operate our Ranch. We had a nice D2 dozer, a Cat Loader, a Cat 212 Blade, a Mitsubishi (Cat) mini Backhoe, a 1958 tandem dump truck with a Cummins 262 and a 5 and 4 transmission, a 1978 Chevrolet single axle dump truck with a Detroit 6-71 and a 10 speed, a Fruehauf Lowboy, 2 Eager Beaver Lowboys, a 1968 Chevrolet Tractor with a 6-V 53 Detroit Engine and a tag-axle, a 1991 Freightliner Semi, and a 1992 Kenworth T 600 Semi with a Cummins Engine.
Great job on the restoration it should be good for another 50 years, hope you don’t mind me mentioning but you need to leave the main engine clutch pulled all the way back, when the tractor’s stationary with the engine running, this prevents unnecessary wear on the clutch. Leaving the main engine clutch in the forward position, when the engine’s running, is the same as having your foot on the clutch pedal, in your, car when stationary! Always pull the main engine clutch lever fully back when stationary.
My grandpa used to freight through the bush with D4 cats of this era. They would pull sleighs loaded with freight down trails and over frozen lakes in northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan. None of his cats ever looked this good. Everyone we knew who owned one of these cats and used it in the winter would remove the top track idler and replace it with a block of fir or oak. For some reason the top idler would always freeze solid and then the track would wear a flat on the top side. Yours is very nice.
Nice restoration on this D4! My dad and I restored a John Deere MT and M and an International Harvester Cub, Super A and an old 1920 International Harvester with iron wheels. Takes a lot of time but worth it when completed.
Grew up farming with these tractors, my dad had two of them when I was a kid. Still have one with a dozer on it, doesn't run often, but still runs strong. I was taught to never use the pony motor ignition switch, we always shut the gas off and let the engine run out of gas. Also ran some 9u D6 tractors basically a six cylinder version of the same engine. 6 roller track frame and a way sturdier transmission steering clutches and finals. Really love these old machines excellent restoration work you have alot to be proud of.

I have a 1951 7U D4 to restore and I was looking for videos of restored machines. You did a great job, I'm very impressed! A coincidence I would like to share with you is I'm located in Marysville and my three sons went to Wheatland High School. I am a farmer and I thought that Mr. Magill was an awesome Ag teacher! My family, the Bertolini's, have been friends with the Sohrakoff's for years!
You guys did a tremendous job on that dozer. A couple of things to consider on starting it is, buy a small muffler for the pony motor. Cat makes one and it is very quiet. Start the pony motor and let it run at lower rpm for a little while. This warms up the oil in the little engine and pushes some fuel through the pony motor carburetor. Let the pony motor turn over the big engine with no compression for a minute or two to allow the big engine to warm up and oil pressure to rise. Then give it compression by releasing the lever. Don't give it fuel yet. Let it turn for a few seconds. Then give it fuel and it will start up nicely. Idol the pony motor down and turn it off. Beautiful.
Im glad that there's a pony motor muffler available. I wish i could put one on, for mine i worry about branches pulling it off. Definitely proper start procedures are a must. Im lucky to actually have the original manuals for my d4
you forgot to tell that the pony motor never to stop with the magneto, but by closing the fuel supply. When you stop him with the magneto the fuel will run in to the lube oil and will destroy the pony motor
Bang on! Yes, let the pony motor "catch its breath" before you engage the diesel engine! Then let the diesel engine turn over with decompression lever engaged until the oil pressure and fuel pressure gets up. Engage the compression lever and again, allow the diesel engine to turn over for a bit before giving it some throttle / fuel allowing it to start! It's not a race! It's all about prolonging the life of both engines. Finally, never shut the pony motor off via the magneto switch; turn off the fuel and let it run out of fuel (otherwise fuel remaining in carburetor will run down into the pony motor and dilute the lubricating oil). Regards..... ex Caterpillar mechanic.
I let mine warm up the big donk for about 1 cigarette or 5 to 6 minutes before I start the big one up !! Can start quicker when they are warmed up though !! Mines a 1957 D4 7U No.40767 I I have just put a direct starter 24 v onto it !! Bloody awesome !!

Beautiful restoration job! I had a 7U wide track w/open ROPS. Mine looked rough but was a beautiful old machine. I used it building my home and shop on 5 acres years ago. I just about cried when I sold it :-)
This is a gorgeous project tractor. I personally wouldn't let it just sit outside in the elements. That baby would be parked inside the house next to the lazy boy recliner.
Beautiful restoration of a great old machine. I had a 1949 D4 7U with an electric start pony. Mine had a dozer blade and ROP. It never failed me, and started on first turn just like this one. I should've kept it and got rid of my wife instead. Sad to see it go.
Impressive restoration! I pulled a plough with one of these in Kibbutz Mahanayim, Israel, 1963-65. Ran like a dream but damaged my hearing a bit: lucky someone invented hearing protection eventually.

Nice video. One thing about these Cats is that they have a snap clutch. This should be snapped on when shut off, or when idling for extended time because the friction disc can warp and disintegrate when not parked in the engaged position.

Sounds like a bad injector when idling...or maybe some bad fuel. I farmed with my dad's 1954 7U for years. Needed to use starting fluid in later years. Had the farm pads. A solid old friend.
As kid I would watch local farmers start their D-2s ( same process) . Thy would spend a lot of time and energy just to start the pony motor. I have never seen a cat pony motor start that easily.
Curious as to where you got your Caterpillar Diesel hood decals. I bought a complete decal set for my tail seat D4 7J from Antique Cat Machinery Owners Club. The font and size was off by a mile when compared to the original decals on my hood. I emailed ACMOC with pictures of their decals next to the ones on my hood for comparison. They acknowledged that they were not correct and and claimed twice, to be looking into it. Haven't heard from them for weeks now. Your hood decals look exactly like the originals on my hood, so it seems that someone is making the correct ones...

@Zachery Thompson, Man I thought I finally found someone who was going to explain the sequence of starting the d4. You did good up until you got side tracked at the fuel throttle then did not explain what the levers did. I think what they do is: 1st turn the compression lever to the off position then make sure the fuel throttle is in the off position then you start the pony motor then pull the lever up all the way hard to engage the pinion brake then use the other lever to engage the pinion then push the tall lever all the way forward to engage the clutch on the pony motor gear then engage the compression lever on then let the diesel engine warm up to the touch then give the fuel throttle a little fuel then when the diesel engine starts it kicks out the pinion then what I am not sure from here? I think you push the tall lever forward a little to disengage the clutches to the pony motor then turn the fuel off to the pony motor and let it run out of gas. Then get on and put in gear and engage the clutch. Then when you stop you disengage the clutch take it out of gear and if you are going to let it idle engage the clutch to keep something from messing up in the clutch not sure what though.

you might check on ebay, i had a fairly difficult time trying to find out where parts where. you could also get in contact with the caterpillar club, i know they have a lot of connections and people with many old cats laying around

I found one I'm told it ran really well when parked 5 years ago I belive it to be a 1956 or so, the shift linkage seems to be stuck, I'm hoping it can be cleaned without to much trouble , do you know much about it?
When i first got the cat, the shifting lever felt like it was jammed, I took off the hat below the knob and there was a bunch of crud stuck in there. I cleaned it out and it went into every gear perfectly!

Excellent. I would sure be proud of the boy. My son rebuilt his first automatic transmission when he was 17. He is now 52... Time flies.

Very beautiful project. I have a 53' Cat D47u2#### series with Wright Blade kit. This inspired me to renew the machine.

Its slightly difficult depending on what you need to replace, but for the most part its not too bad. Ebay is a big help on these older tractors
