Driver diameter determines frequency at which the driver begins beaming ... that's all. No connection to cone diameter and any sound quality characteristic.
I remember running a bandpass 12 back in the early 90s. Had friends with them also. They rocked hatchbacks. Have a box I recently built with four 8s waiting for me to get my truck back together.
I feel like newer 8 inch subwoofers have better x-max and a lower overall frequency response compared to older 8 inch subwoofers that had a tiny surround and spider with a small voice coil.
With the affordability these days of insane amounts of power , it had to happen . The old small voice coil and magnet designs would simply burn like Cali with what folks can throw at em now .
The stereo shop down the road from my house use to have a Savard truck in its showroom. It was a Nissan Hardbody with a snug top filled with 15” subs and amps. That truck was the catalyst to my audio obsession. This was around 1995-1997.
I must say... those Savard Sub boxes look like they are built extremely well while clearly looking more costly than the price they sell for. The fit and finish just looks really clean, while they further look solid and stout. 🔥💪🏽
Man, your trip back through memory lane reminded me of my 1979 Honda Civic which I installed four 6x9s in a big box that I filled with foam, and installed four tweeters, two MB Quart 5x7 split sets in the dash, and a Soundstream Reference 1000 watt 4 channel amp.
I have a 97 f250 4dr. I did 6 sundown 6.5W's with a tramps 3k. I am very impressed. Had 6.5X's but wouldn't take any power. I still have great leg room I back seat.
@@ElectronicMusicUnderground Careful. There are cases where a single 15 will have more cone volume than 2 12s. I know it doesn't look that way, but... ex: A 15 with a 4" deep cone is 235.619 in^3. A 12 with a 4" deep cone is 150.796 in^3. In reality both cones won't be the same depth (you drop down to 131in^3 on the 12 if it loses 1/2" of depth) and you will likely end up with a lot more surround on 2 12s than you do on one 15. Back in the olden days, 12 vs 15 was also where voice coil sizes tended to step up, so power handling tended to step up, so Xmax tended to step up too. All of that means more air displacement. I was pretty surprised when all of that was pointed out to me many years ago. At the time the raging debate was over 2 sealed 12s or one ported 15 in roughly the same box size. Sound is subjective, but the numbers seemed to indicate an SPL equilibrium.I never had the chance to A vs. B that idea, but I was leaning pretty hard toward a single 15... it was cheaper. 😂 None of that is to say that so-and-sos whatever isn't harder than whatever. Just an interesting topic that once came up between bass nerds many years ago.
Not sure why, but I've always been fond of 10" subs - nothing smaller, nothing bigger. But your quite right, smaller subs may just be the ticket one's after in terms of size/space and output needs.
I resently bought a JL Audio 12 wedgebox sub for my family wagon, really looking forward th get it installed, hopefully it will bump and bring me back to the good old days 😊
It's a killer bike that'll last forever. Buy it. Some comparible options to consider are: Cult Devotion 29" (or 26") Kink Drifter 29 or 26 DK Legend 26
There is a true relation between the 12 inch size and the targeted sound a sub is used for. Not saying other sizes won't sound good but there are still compromises.
One of the most important points you didn't mentioned is the stamped steel basket. That's SUPER important. People new into the audio industry like the looks of the cast baskets. They don't understand that those baskets ring like tuning forks and can cause SQ problems. Stamped steel doesn't resonate so, it's the best and honestly the strongest option. I hate that Savard makes their stuff in China. I wish they'd build in the US but, I get it. They have to stay competitive price wise. Regardless, they'll be in the high running for my new system.
"I hate that Savard makes their stuff in China." Never understood the argument against China made for a few fundamental reasons; 1. Components sourced from China but glued together in the U.S. doesn't constitute M.I.A. for me 2. Chinese build-houses can only produce to the (insert brand name) specs. 3. Most companies who shout about M.I.A more often or not fall into category #1 or #2 … or at least have products built outside the US (go see JL Audio for details) "Yes, some JL Audio products are made in Germany, including the C5 and C5-653 car audio speakers" "The C5 and ZR speakers are manufactured in Germany" DIYMA - "The parts come from the U.S. and overseas. There isn't a single U.S. made speaker that uses all U.S. parts anymore. For example, there are no magnet producers in the U.S.A. at this time. They all closed up in the 90's. Manville Smith JL Audio"
Working on an inexpensive array of 8x8in free air in my daily 18 Corolla. Got 4 on the plate just behind the back seat. After dsp they sound like a proper 12-15in sub. Can't wait for nice weather to put the other 4 in and wire a mono Amp.
they are very nice and would be good for someone needing something small, but cone area and power is still the king. I just found 4 old school Orion extreme 12s running all 4 in a sealed enclosure with 1200 watts gave me a 148 on the window. still have room in the trunk for groceries lol.
Will have to check them out when i make a sound quality build in the future. Went the opposite route this time lol with a 5 stach 12 inch from audio pipe at 1200 watts rms.
I rmbr seeing this name by chance in an old magazine back in the 90s but THIS channel made me wanna follow thru and see what it was all about lol. A shame we don't get all the offerings in Australian/Nz Car Audio stores. It 97% all the OG household brands like Alpine/Kicker/Kenwood/RF & JBL
I want to see the 10 and 12-in high output savard.. & Maybe a test with the 18"?!? The ones you were testing. W/rap written across the cap just looks cheap in my opinion. But they seem to perform well. If they had a sale or something I'd be willing to try them out... But with the six and a half it seems like everybody's in the same price range between $1 and $120. If it didn't say rap across the front I'd be willing to give it more of a chance. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Big D
I have an inverted Skar ZVX-8 on a homemade ported box, hooked up to a Taramps Bass 800, running on 1 ohm. That thing hits harder than my old 2 12’s that was a 1500 watt system. It’s all about the enclosure, not size!
My dad had two 10 inch bazookas non amplified in his CRX lol shit was slapping nothing but lows I actually just bought him a 6 inch and I plan on grabbing him another one for his new car
I have had a pair of 10" Rockford Fosgates from the Prime series in my 94 extended cab chevy in a good box now for years and anything more would be overkill to me
Tried replacing 6.5" bose door subs with a pair of Gomer Pyles, did not sound good! I went ahead and built a similar box for them and I was astounded by the results, the $23 plastic basket woofers sounded like a single good budget 10 incher! I also have a box very similar to the Savard challenger, except its only dual 10's. It needs mids and woofers, thats gonna be my next project!
I wanted a little extra low end in my truck and went with a 10" infinity reference sub and a skar vented box. Also, used the same topstronggear amp you showed on your channel. Works great and shakes my rearview mirror 😅.
years back many years!!! some one gave me (yes I know) zenith house speakers in the box! got a cheap radio cheap EQ booster had to put the boxes in the trunk was not very loud so I unbloted the seat would put it down mann the DEEP BASS that came out of that trunk in the boxes was really GOOD! OH they was 8"
Please read is it possible if you can do a Dyno on Pre amplifier stereo PYLE pd3000bt, It's supposed to be like 900 watt rms And peak 3000 Watts, Just purchased one, And wired each channels down to 4 ohms, And it's on sale right now, And I think for the price, it's ridiculously loud. And I know what people say about those products. But I think that 1 made by them is actually possibly a pass.
Just went from a single 12 " W0v3 - 300W 4 Ohm to dual 10" W0v3 - 500W 2 Ohm. The 10's are in a proper JL Basswedge box. I have not regretted going that route. They also gave it to me for $425 USD. Can't go wrong with that.
I looked at Savard's site a few weeks ago after seeing one of your videos. I didn't realize they were out of Baton Rouge. I thought I remembered they were well known in the Gulf Coast LA/MS area. So that would make sese.
Yessss I remember this, it was when Baton Rouge was apart of the 504 area code back in the day (New Orleans still is 504), before they switched to 225 area code. Great times when that bass was rocking out oldsmobiles etc. YES post the 18inch subwoofers please in advance.
Would these be weather proof in an enclosed atv box? I have boss atv speaker looking to change out the speakers and amp to be more powerful . What bluetooth amp would you recommend to go inside the box and what speakers if not these ?
I rember looking up the prices when you first reviewed the Hi-Q 8's. And they were like $99.00 each. Then a few weeks after your video they went to like $129.00. Now $179.00 or 161.00 on sale now. Wow... I should have jumped on them way earlier! Live and learn! I got two Sdr Skar daul 2 ohm on a rp.1200.1 amp. I am probably going to add two more Sdr 8's or Evl 6.5's. I want some Hi-Q's for sure!
My first subs were two Savard Rap 10's in a sealed enclosure behind the seat of my 92 Nissan Hardbody. These bad boys were powered by a 40 watt Rodek. Everyone thought I was running two 12. I've been on the lookout for one of those brick shaped Rodek for a while. Now, I'm thinking about pulling the 4 x Massive Audio 6.5s and replacing them with the Rap 6.5s in my 72 C10.
Back in the day, (late80's early 90's) running competition in MS and LA there were three names that stood out. Savard, Kicker and the Punch (Rockford Fosgate). Later came the unicorns of bass and briefly M&M and Pioneer. Savard has survived the test of bass and time. My system would have been Savard but they didn't have 18" during the apocalypse of 2020. I may have to revisit Savard and see what's up in 2024.
FINALLY SOMEONE TELLING THE TRUTH! I run a test where I created using a MIDBASS, 4 inches and 70 watts, making a small case, I think it is from 5 x4,5 inches, and an DIY passive radiator with coins attacted to it. It can go low, and sounds decent. My 6 inch Samsung subwoofer OEM Stock from factory punches some insane bass, just doesnt go as low as I want. I dont get why people bother getting 14 inch subwoofers when 2 6"s would do the trick and maybe have even more bass and SPL than the huge 99999w subwoofers. Have a great day!
4 8in sound like 2 12s of a 1500rms sub. They lack the output of super lows though. You can though if you listen to anything but todays trap really enjoy 8s. I just did 4 skar z series 8s on a JP2300 and it shakes windows and can hear it a block away. Any more and your compensating for something.
Have you tested their components? I am local to Savard and and wonder how they stack up. Crazy to think during the their peak, Savard and SAS Bazooka used to be almost spitting distance between them.
I haven't been around these parts for some time and it's good to hear you well. I was just wondering if you'd ever featured any of the Dayton Audio range. I've been looking at it lately and like the overall feel and flexibility.
Can i run 2 of those 6.5 high q's free air under the back seat of a crew cab f250. There isn't a ton of room, and the area behind the seat is gonna have my batteries, inverter, charge controller, and amp if i get my way So the only space i have left is under the back seat
Because if you I decided to go with the Savard HO 10's... issue I'm having is 2 or 4 10's lol... btw I just turned 49 so I remember them, but in the late 90's RF was still around so went with them ever since I could afford them. But figured I'd try something new with my Giulia... 😅
Back in the 90s I had a bandpass box made by American Bass. It had both speakers behind plexiglass but instead of the sound coming from the back of the speakers on either side (Google bandpass box and that's all that you'll find), the sound came from the top center of box. That box was fantastic and I've been looking for one for about 10 years with no luck. If anyone has one or any ideas where I can get one, I'd be interested and would appreciate it!
Have a 12" Hi Q coming in tomorrow, It's gonna have it's work cut out for it replacing a 28yr old Fosgate RFP 1212 . Fosgate still works Great , but figured I'd try something new.
this is gonna sound dumb, but I'm looking at the 6.5 inch rap series standard enclosure with subs package, I want to use this in a home theater setup, not sure what ohm...
I've recently got a new set of ear buds and they passed the test those sounded pretty good from what I can tell though your Sequoia as quite a few rattles and squeaks for it age
@@xaviermontalban717 Any of these drivers are fine in home audio. Without the cabin gain of the typical car volume, the huge increase in room cubic volume in home hifi is dramatically more demanding on performance.
One 2 ohm dual voice coil 8” wired to 1 ohm in ported .668 cu ft. Box tuned to 42 hz in a civic hatchback running on 150 watts is more than plenty for me.
Nowadays subs are subs... they all do the same thing. It's just the amount of space you have that limits the size/ quantity you wanna run. Small subs resonate at higher frequencies thus they excel at tight punchy bass. Larger you go the more they can excel at lower frequencies. Any sub can produce any bass range in a properly tuned enclosure though.
Not to mention smaller subs need to move like crazy in order to produce the ultra low frequencies which can tend to rip apart easier and faster than bigger subs. If you want to play really low and loud without worry, bigger subwoofers will always excel. - Now, of course I’m not saying that small subwoofers cannot play very low because I know they do especially if you happen to have a large quantity of them. But that’s the thing, you need many small ones to compensate what one or two in a bigger nice built enclosure can do. Just saying.
@@Bassotronicshat's completely inaccurate. The size of the subwoofer has nothing to do with the speed it's going to move, at a frequency. You keep posting nonsense all over these comments.
@@REH86 I did not say anything about speed other than how fast they may break apart. Let’s say an 18” subwoofer in order to produce a certain SPL only needs to move 1 inch at a given frequency while a smaller subwoofer has to move 3 inches in order to produce the same SPL to compensate at the same given frequency. And of coarse, enclosures matter too. I’ve been dealing with audio for 25 years and I do not post nonsense, I post facts. Stop trolling.
@@Bassotronics You literally said that smaller woofers need to move more to produce a frequency. The simple fact is, no, they don't. Frequency is literally the amount of times per second that the woofer moves, regardless of the size. That's just what it is. Now you're trying to change what you said in that first comment and pretend it had anything to do with spl. Just say you're wrong, and do better.
@@REH86 I had to add more information so you don’t take things out of context. Let me repeat again my other post because you don’t seem to understand what I’m saying in English. “I did not say anything about speed other than how fast they may break apart. Let’s say an 18” subwoofer in order to produce a certain SPL only needs to move 1 inch at a given frequency while a smaller subwoofer has to move 3 inches in order to produce the same SPL to compensate at the same given frequency. I got a oval alpine from a 2016 jeep wrangler and im having trouble figuring out the frequency range it likes to be ran at, i had it at 1ohm 400 watts rms and blew up the first one, so the second one i got is wired at 4ohm 150watts rms and seems to sound fine but i disnt want to set the frequency too low. Whats the range of a typical 8 inch sub? Its a quad coil 4ohm
im a big fan of large drivers. ive never seen a small driver that can actually give any real bass... like maybe 40hz plus? mostly i tune to low 30's or high 20's. my home subs are 21", my trucks are 18. i have not heard many small ones - AD had a set in a friends car that just sounded trash - like they were real hollow in the 30's. so that box you have there - i wonder what a single 12 or 15 jl in a sealed would do frequency range wise. would take about the same cubic space

I had a couple 10" MTX in a shitty box I got for free and damn was it banging. Miss those subs, was my first system.

I think thats kinda obvious, better manofacturing
With the affordability these days of insane amounts of power , it had to happen .
The old small voice coil and magnet designs would simply burn like Cali with what folks can throw at em now .

The stereo shop down the road from my house use to have a Savard truck in its showroom. It was a Nissan Hardbody with a snug top filled with 15” subs and amps. That truck was the catalyst to my audio obsession. This was around 1995-1997.
I had 2 of those challenger boxes that was loaded with MTX TERMINATORS
I must say... those Savard Sub boxes look like they are built extremely well while clearly looking more costly than the price they sell for.
The fit and finish just looks really clean, while they further look solid and stout. 🔥💪🏽

Ran 3 JL Audio 6W0’s in a ported box in my Ranger. Sounded awesome.
Keep it coming. 10" and 12" were my go-to for car audio in the 90s
The box is everything, a good box can make a 6.5 be louder and better (bandwidth, not a burp box) than larger subs with worse boxes
I loved my Savard RAP 15s back in the day.
I put an 8" sub/amp combo in my vehicle, other than not shaking the neighbors china cabinet, it checks all my boxes.
I have 4 DD 8's in a ported box in my Grand Am on 2 DD 1500 amps and they are tearing my car up.
I had a small box with a JL 6.5.
I liked it.
@@volvo09I repurposed an 8" JBL home theatre sub,and it performs better than I expected. This thing is 25 years old too

I have 4 200 watt rms 12s. They are louder then two 15s Ive heard. I only have them on 1500 rms and they hit 145 db!!
Enclosure is key 🔑 Bro... very nice for the wattage. Must be doing something 🤔 right ✅

and of course 2 12's are louder than 1 15incher.
Your shit must sure be on point... cone area is king
None of that is to say that so-and-sos whatever isn't harder than whatever. Just an interesting topic that once came up between bass nerds many years ago.
Was literally designing a box for 2 6.5 subs
this is perfect!
Not sure why, but I've always been fond of 10" subs - nothing smaller, nothing bigger. But your quite right, smaller subs may just be the ticket one's after in terms of size/space and output needs.
I had a set of the Savard Pro Series 12” subs in a ported box back in the late 80’s. They were in a hatchback and sounded amazing.
I resently bought a JL Audio 12 wedgebox sub for my family wagon, really looking forward th get it installed, hopefully it will bump and bring me back to the good old days 😊

How's that 29" Blue Gt pro performer holding up? I'm considering getting one
It's a killer bike that'll last forever. Buy it. Some comparible options to consider are:
Cult Devotion 29" (or 26")
Kink Drifter 29 or 26
DK Legend 26
"I hate that Savard makes their stuff in China."
Never understood the argument against China made for a few fundamental reasons;
1. Components sourced from China but glued together in the U.S. doesn't constitute M.I.A. for me
2. Chinese build-houses can only produce to the (insert brand name) specs.
3. Most companies who shout about M.I.A more often or not fall into category #1 or #2 … or at least have products built outside the US (go see JL Audio for details) "Yes, some JL Audio products are made in Germany, including the C5 and C5-653 car audio speakers"
"The C5 and ZR speakers are manufactured in Germany"
DIYMA - "The parts come from the U.S. and overseas. There isn't a single U.S. made speaker that uses all U.S. parts anymore. For example, there are no magnet producers in the U.S.A. at this time. They all closed up in the 90's.

Definitely wanna see the larger sub too! Great video
Yep, I dig the 8"s but you're right ... (Vd) swept volume rules the day.

I ran a single Dayton 8" Ultimax in my old Smart fortwo on 500W in a small sealed box, was heaps of output and more than enough for a small car.

My goodness 124db from a 6.5" cone is phenomenal. I'll have to see if they have an Australian distributor.
Excellent review.
Can u recommend a amp the work will with 2 SAVARD 8'' SUBWOOFER
i had a challenger 1201... with a hifonics thor amp. it was pretty solid for the time.

I have a big question, in your opinion what would we the best 6.5 marine speaker for bass and of course good sound please help
In your opinion, which of these bass speakers it's the best? Considering low frequency but also high output quality
Just picked up 5 hi-q 6.5s doing a center console 4th order
Can i run 2 of those 6.5 high q's free air under the back seat of a crew cab f250. There isn't a ton of room, and the area behind the seat is gonna have my batteries, inverter, charge controller, and amp if i get my way
So the only space i have left is under the back seat
YES YES!!! I want to see the 10 and 12 Savard soon really impressed by everything else BRING IT!!! can't wait
Because if you I decided to go with the Savard HO 10's... issue I'm having is 2 or 4 10's lol... btw I just turned 49 so I remember them, but in the late 90's RF was still around so went with them ever since I could afford them. But figured I'd try something new with my Giulia... 😅
I used to run those 8in subs that were sold at Radio Shack back around 1990.
That 6.5" sub/box setup would be perfect in my Geo Metro! Plenty of slap for the size without taking up what little room I do have.
How much cubic feet did you use for the single 6.5" subwoofer?
this is gonna sound dumb, but I'm looking at the 6.5 inch rap series standard enclosure with subs package, I want to use this in a home theater setup, not sure what ohm...
How would the Hi-Q 6.5 work for mid bass?
I have a 92 convertible vett with a Bazooka 10. That 6.5 flexed and hit lower than the Bazooka. Would one work in a tube?
What about the 15-inch high output subwoofer no one has done a video on it anywhere

@FOH3663 well, most of these videos seem geared towards car audio. I'd love to see a couple of builds/tests with home audio

Have you ever considered testing out a pair of Peavy black widow pro audio subs ?
We used to make fun of Savard woofers back in the day, but their new ones look pretty legit!
-
Now, of course I’m not saying that small subwoofers cannot play very low because I know they do especially if you happen to have a large quantity of them.
@@REH86
I did not say anything about speed other than how fast they may break apart.

Just say you're wrong, and do better.

im a big fan of large drivers. ive never seen a small driver that can actually give any real bass... like maybe 40hz plus? mostly i tune to low 30's or high 20's. my home subs are 21", my trucks are 18. i have not heard many small ones - AD had a set in a friends car that just sounded trash - like they were real hollow in the 30's. so that box you have there - i wonder what a single 12 or 15 jl in a sealed would do frequency range wise. would take about the same cubic space
I know this was about the Savard speakers which are cool but shout out to your Sequoia that looks clean Bid D
