  • The Tesla Model 3 has finally landed in the UK. But was it worth the wait - and the hype? Chris Knapman puts the Model 3 Performance to the test in this CarGurus UK review. From the acceleration to the range, and from the gadgets to the amount of space on offer, it's fair to say he was quite impressed...

...and on the doors it's mostly the second - outer seal, which makes the difference. It's a good idea to install even some cheap ones, as they'll reduce road noise and stop water/debris from entering the door frame.

A Canadian tester placed some sound deadening foam under the bass vent in the rear parcel shelf (the spikey stuff).
It allowed the bass from the subwoofer through, but cut out higher frequency sound from the boot.

sound kits available on the internet. For just a few bucks you can self-install seals around all 4 doors, the trunk, the frunk and the roof glass and voila, your interior and door slamming sounds like a bank vault. I even added 3rd party noise padding under the frunk and trunk lids - even better. You can complain or you can do something about it. I leave every "build quality" Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Porsche and Lexus at the last red light - no comparison to a missing door seal.

Love my Model 3 Performance model. Best car I've ever purchased. The boot noise you mentioned on closing is the stupid American style number plate surrounds that are only fixed with two screws and pivot and rattle. I removed mine and fixed the number plate traditional UK style. No more rattles on closing the boot, I did the front number plate too as that suffered from the same issue.

    • @VoxelLoop

Can totally relate to this, I didn't think about the cause though! I just assumed it was bad seals!
My M3P came with the little plastic 'All wheel drive' surround on too, that thing doesn't fit on properly on the left or the right-hand side, it just kind of hovers there with a big gap behind the sides of it. (I know US plates are much smaller, so that made sense!)
How did you mount the number plate a different way? Just take it off, remove the surround, and re-attach? I'm not sure how they're traditionally mounted. :)

I own a Model 3 Performance, so yeah...I'm a fan! After experiencing driving in EV mode in my Lexus, jumping to full EV was an obvious next step. And no regrets. Sure, it is not as convenient on long trips, but the supercharger network makes short work of that! And, using a supercharger costs about 1/3 the price of gasoline! Totally worth the few extra minutes to charge, especially if you eat food or take a restroom break while the car charges (things you will inevitably do in a gas car anyway)!

I just got a model 3P in Dec and feel the same way. I would have been fine with a long range, but with the 20" wheels and tighter suspension, it turned out to be a better choice for me - and I never feel like the ride is harsh. I charge at home from solar and having the option is fantastic. Unlike other fast cars, when I get into it (punch it) I'm not burning up a gallon of gas. I am used to the smooth sophistication of the Tesla and I can't see ever going back.

No problems at all and saved about 1800 Euro in fuel costs and 250 Euro for the first oil change I did not have to have made. I'm also very positively surprised with tire wear. It being a 500hp car I expected it to be worse (Had a Megane RS 250 TCe prior to the M3P), but they will probably last at least 50% longer, despite the higer hp count and the higher weight.

Supercharger price is 28 cents per kWh. If you can travel 4 miles per kWh, that's 7 cents per mile. If you have a gas car that goes 30 miles per gal, and 1 gal of gas costs $3, that's 10 cents per mile. Your 1/3 the price of gasoline is just wrong.

Saying that they won't put in another screen and will continue the aversion to having a HUD. Hudway are making the Hudway Drive which will fit this model and that's something I'd fit. It's also not an ugly car at all. There's also no Matrix LED option. The white seats are awful but I wouldn't spec those. We've had a model 3 Performance for 3 months now and have used it for commuting and long trips and have no reservations whatsoever. It's a good-looking and superbly engineered EV. The acceleration is a sheer joy. Performance ICE car drivers are spooked at red lights when they come up against the Model 3 because they've seen the writing on the wall. It's a pity ICE car manufacturers did not see the writing on the wall because Tesla is way ahead, especially in battery technology. It's a small paradigm shift in planning trips, but if you consider that cars in general are sitting still for up to 95% of the time, why wouldn't that time be useful to charge it with the energy to run the car when you need to use it?

Great review -- what a relief to hear from someone who understands how an EV is different than petrol -- my experience is that it's far, far more convenient to charge every night and wake to a full tank (of electrons?). In my Model 3, I am always able to get at least 95% of the EPA rated range ... in warmer weather ... often quite a bit more. In colder weather (I live in Boston) range is reduced. But as you say, the key bit is that you have complete visibility into how many miles you have remaining, and in the large majority of cases that's far more than you'll need before you park the car and give it some juice -- on longer trips, use the supercharger network, which is brilliant and effectively everywhere.

I have ordered an electric car, but there was not a single moment during the process of selecting one that I thought about acceleration, that is this day not relevant! As good as any electric car accelerates faster than an ICE car, if is 3 or 7 seconds to reach 60 mi, not important, 7 seconds is still fast! And it's better to preserve the tires in good condition. Unless you want to replace them every 10.000 miles. No, I took other carachteristics into consideration, like sound proofing, not the strongest point of a Tesla, for sure not above a certain speed. I also looked at service, Tesla service points are far away, and yes the many problems reported by Tesla owners makes me believe a regular visit to a service center is to be expected. And when it is about the range, the real world range is far from what's been claimed and displayed in the car. And all the rest is mentioned in the video, it is a good car, but not a real drivers car, it does not offer the comfort I am used to. So yes I agree, once experienced a real car with an electric power train you don't go back to an ICE. But Tesla is as you say, an tech electric car and can't replace an ICE when it is about comfort. Lucky, there are electric driven alternatives who can!

I own one, and agree with most of what has been said in this review. One big negative for me is the cruise control: 99% of the time its totally fine and works great, but in 1% of the time its flat out dangerous. It brakes ridiculously hard sometimes for no good reason, endangering people driving behind you. Also it automatically decreases speed in some corners or highway exits to a laughable low speed. Hopefully this is something that can be improved. The other minor negative I have is the same mentioned in the video: I really dislike the sound of the boot closing...

In Europe most outlets are 220v and will charge a Model 3 around 14km/hr. So if you plug it in at night for ten hours you'll get back 140km range which is way more than most people commute in a day.
Also in Ireland, the type-2 ESB chargers are still free and they'll charge you up at 65km/hr.

In talking about range you didn't mention a key influence which is outside temperature, cold weather in particular. Not only does the battery not perform as well - a temporary effect - but cold starts mean limited regen and a lot of power used to heat the cabin, like 4kW of power at peak.
I've already toured France in my M3 AWD and, as you say, you land up mostly charging between 20 and 80% which you can do in about 20 mins - only just enough time to take a pee break and stretch your legs. I've done 5,000 miles in 4 months. But I do want to see how it does in warm weather for comparison.

Range will be affected by driving conditions and how you drive the car, with the range changing in realtime - just like a petrol (gas) car. People made a big deal about the Tesla Model X dropping its range dramatically when it was towing a trailer. Gas vehicles do exactly the same thing.

    • @drdrew3
      @drdrew3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Speaking of driving conditions... Cold weather adversely affects the range of an EV dramatically by decreasing battery efficiency. Using heater in EV also much greater adverse effect compared to ICE vehicle. Other things that affect both but worse for EV: using A/C, going uphill, headwind and towing. ICE are affected too but disproportionately worse for EV. And the adverse affect is more dramatic for EV because range is shorter to start with

@@drdrew3 Especially running the heater: That's a freebie for ICE vehicles because they waste so much energy in the form of heat. I remember driving some rental car years ago that had a real-time MPG gauge and it fluctuated WILDLY as I did those things (uphill, downhill, A/C on/off, etc), but yeah, really cold temps (and really high ones, too) can overly affect EVs. I just don't want people to get the idea that only EVs have this problem. Even with these issues, the benefits, to me, still far outweigh the negatives and those negatives will be addressed one by one. Battery cost per kg, for example, has dropped by 2/3rds in the last 10 years.

The screen is not a barrier, in fact it's the opposite when you are used to it. I rarely have to touch the screen because whenever someone gets in the car, the car auto adjusts pretty much everything to the current drivers preference (climate, radio stations, steering wheel, mirrors and many other things). The screen also reduces the manufacturing and maintenance costs. A car with 'hard' buttons can never adapt to you, but a car with soft buttons can do exactly that.

You would have to go through about 4 Mazda 3's with all the maintenance and petrol expenditures that entails to achieve a million miles.

Can someone who owns a 3 series or Audi A4 comment at 11:00 about his statement that the quality is really close and hard to tell.
I totally understand that the tech of the Model 3 is quite advanced, but may question build quality. That trunk closing sound was a bit pathetic at 8:15.

I've test driven this car, and whilst Tesla are doing a get job the build quality is no where near the germans. When you close the doors it sounds like tin and you can hear inside window vibrate. Its amazing tech but they are not in the same level

I think the real slice of genius will be the next model that will price around $20-Grand. That will be the one everyone can afford. The Model 3 is still a little too expensive at $35-Grand. When the 3 was announced I think Tesla initially got 420,000 pre-orders. When the $20-Grand one arrives I would not be surprised to see 2-million in pre-orders worldwide. That would bring Tesla $40-Billion in sales. Say goodbye to GM, Chrysler and Ford.

There are different measures of a "gallon" in the UK vs US. UK gallon = 1.2 US gallons. So a 70 MPG UK car is a 58 MPG US car. Prius city MPG is 58 per the EPA, so yes, US does have one :)

70mpg cars just shag the planet half as fast as 'normal' cars. Electric (from renewables) is by far the best.
