  • My weekly meal prep routine- showing you guys how I actually meal prep! I don't do big meal prep sessions these days, but break it up into small 30 minute sessions over 1-2 days. Small meal prep sessions really add up and make a huge difference!
MY WEEKLY MEAL PREP ROUTINE INCLUDES:
    --------------------------------------------------------
    • cooking a big batch of breakfasts
    • preparing 1-2 snack recipes, and generally making sure we have lots of healthy fruit and vegetable options
    • cooking 4 days of lunches ahead
    • I do not meal prep our dinners, but occasionally will pre-chop salads or sides
Read the full blog post and download your own printable recipes & shopping list here: sweetpeasandsaffron.com/my-we...
WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF YOUR FAMILY?
    --------------------------------------------------
    • For simplicity I just showed 4 portions of each meal, but often I will double up and make 8 portions
    • These days we've been enjoying dinner leftovers for lunches fairly often so we are eating a couple of portions of Honey Sesame Chicken Lunch Bowls each and the rest of the week it will be leftovers for us!
    • I will occasionally do a second mini-prep session mid-week to make more steel cut oats and (if needed) snacks.
    WHAT I PREPPED:

08:10 - Snack Boxes- aka whatever I have on hand in my fridge! This week I did carrots, pepperoni sticks, cherry tomatoes, and some cheese.
08:42 - Chopped broccoli, cauliflower, carrots & bell peppers

I watched 2 of your videos today for the first time & I really like your style of prepping. I am disabled & it would be very difficult for me to do a meal prep that required 2 to 3 hours in the kitchen. Doing a couple 30 minute sessions throughout the week would be more doable. Also, I really like your Honey Sesame Chicken & Granola bar recipes. I've added them to my list of recipes to make. I really like your style & format. You're short & concise & don't add a lot of unnecessary chit chat. I thing I will be binge watching your videos for a couple days to collect some of your recipes & tips. Thanks for some great recipes & tips.

Hi Lynn! I am so happy you like this style. I found the 2-3 hour bulk prep sessions overwhelming and intimidating when I started. I did do them for awhile but this milder approach suits me much more. I hope it helps you, too!

When there is a break between when I prep and when I go to use a meal or snack, it feels to me like someone I love has prepared it for me. Both my parents are great cooks and I grew up surrounded by people who became friends, extra parents, grandparents, etc.
One old lady (Rosie) who was a grandma figure in my life used to talk about how her kids thought there were house fairies who only came when the kids were asleep. The fairies would clean up and cook, fold laundry, etc
It became tradition on/for our birthdays that the fairies would leave a present somewhere while we slept (like Santa). It was always 2 things: something we needed and something to eat.
It gave me a feeling of someone caring enough to supply our need and also getting a treat. That's why prepared food feels like a present that "the fairies" left me. Sometimes I make a "picnic" out of whatever is in the fridge.
    Blessings, Dot

I don’t usually meal prep so much as ingredient prep. Now if it’s something that needs to be prepped for the next day or so, yes. But I love seeing what everyone is doing. As eventually offices will open back up & hubby will go back to normal work (rather than working from home) & I’ll need to make sure he has food to eat from home rather than spending a gazillion dollars eating out on a daily basis. We have saved so much money just from that alone this past year.

This is a good option as well. I'm a full time college student who also needs to care for one or two sick elderly members sometimes and also have to prepare meals (and do house chores) for a family of five (I also have disability). I have a break this month so it's a good chance for me to learn ways on how I can cut down the time I'm spending in the kitchen during my school days. I think I'll try to incorporate some of your tips here. I think the most time consuming part of my cooking is chopping veggies. If I pre chop all of my veggies in the weekend, maybe blanch or roast some of them and store them in containers, I'll spend so much less time in the kitchen during my school days. Hmmm we'll see.

I noticed (when you poured the rice in the cooker) that it was dry. Don't you wash & soak it (You probably did this to save time, but some ppl might just copy you & not wash or soak the rice. It's very important; it removes some starch & some arsenic from the rice and makes it easier to cook.

I made the Honey Sesame Chicken, the Salsa Chicken, and the Asian Chicken with Peanut Sauce (sorry, those are probably not the exact names) this week for my college age son. He commutes, and it's impossible to know whether he will have to stay later on some days, have an extra practice, whether a study group will grab pizza, etc. so he really can't predict whether or not he will be hungry when he walks in the door - or what time that will be! I portioned them all into freezer zip bags and now he has three different things to choose from. We always have tortillas, cheese, veggies, etc. on hand to go with the Salsa Chicken, and the others are complete meals. We both thank you!

Please would you share a meal prep geared to the needs of people who have IBS badly & have had to go on the low FODMAP diet, low in various fermentable chemicals which are unfortunately in very many foods. It could really make a difference to peoples lives if you could, for example design a low FODMAP snack bar. Information about which are low FODMAP foods is avaliable online, put there by Monash University amongst others. Your meals look delicious. Thankyou for sharing.

@@SweetPeasSaffron The FODMAP info can be quite overwhelming, even when your health depends on it. While it would be fantastic, it would be incredibly time consuming for someone who isn't immersed in it full time. Carrie Gill and The Irritable Vegan both come to mind as good low FODMAP sources here on TH-cam. Slightly off topic, I love that you offer so many vegan or vegetarian alternatives! I am a vegetarian in a house full of meat eaters, so a little adjustment and we can all have something nice! Thank you!

My mom does meal preps for my niece (she’s 8 months now). She buys organic veggies, fruit & meat then cooks, steams, purées individually. Then she puts puréed foods into covered ice trays so everything is fresh, ready to go & small-portioned for baby!
Then we just thaw whatever ingredients we’d like to feed baby & warm it up bain-marie (water bath)! Foods keeps in freezer up to 3 months & tastes super fresh!

Don't knock it till you try it! Chicken is safe to store in the fridge after cooking for up to 4 days. If you aren't comfortable with that long of a storage time, start at 2 days do more frequent meal prep. The amount of food that is thrown away because people are scared is really gross. We need to do better. www.stilltasty.com/fooditems/index/16787
