Why Steve Jobs Didn't Have A License Plate

  • Steve Jobs was known for having many strange habits, one of which was not having a license plate on his car. And his reason for this is equally as strange.
    In the state of California, there used to be a loophole where a new car could be driven without a permanent license plate for up to six months.
    Jobs took advantage of this by leasing a new silver Mercedes-Benz every six months. Each time the lease term approached the six-month limit, he would return the car and lease an identical model.

Having his own employees see every day proof that Jobs believed rules don't matter may have been part of his whole persona. The rules (i.e. conventions) didn't matter, only making the best products did. Following the rules almost bankrupt Apple under that Pepsi guy.

    There is a widely circulated anecdote about Steve Jobs soaking his feet in a company toilet. According to Walter Isaacson's biography of Jobs, he did indeed have a habit of soaking his feet in the toilet to relieve stress. This story has become part of the lore surrounding Jobs' unconventional behavior and eccentricities.
    However, it’s important to note that this behavior was described as happening in the private bathrooms at Apple’s offices, not in public restrooms. This distinction is crucial in understanding the context of the story and its setting within his workplace.

    The ironic thing is I pretty easily figured out where he lived (quant upscale neighborhood in Palo Alto) and one evening when I was in that area drove by his house and sure enough, there was the silver Mercedes with no plate. (This was 2007 or so) Oh, and in early 2000s I visited Apple and saw his car in that handicap spot! I was there for a special game developer preview of Mac OS X, I believe 2000. All good times.

    There are some wonderful companies as well. With very informed and top-of-class people who work well together on a team with others with different strengths. With leadership who viewed their colleagues and clients as a part of a living organism that produced value.
    Sadly some of those are gone as well, not out of business like the lacklusters, but things change.

  • @uhlijohn
    @uhlijohn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Despite laws "requiring" vehicle registration, drivers license, or insurance, in non-commercial context none of those are required. Courts have so ruled for decades on that issue. It is called "right to travel". If you are engaged in commerce using a vehicle of any type, you do need registration, license, and insurance. But not your private vehicle that is not engaged in commercial activity. View some videos on TH-cam using search term, "right to travel" and you will hit the jackpot. 99.99% of Americans don't know that. Think about it: needing a license to walk on a public sidewalk is ridiculous, right? Then why is it necessary to get a license to drive a car? That does not mean you can violates safety rules like speed limits, etc. It just means you are free to travel without the permission of the government. It is a fundamental right of every citizen. There is a lot of case law on this and judges have always ruled that registration, license, or insurance are NOT necessary to travel with your private vehicle.

    I met Jobs in early ‘77 when he was doing an Apple II demo at a computer store in Cincinnati. What a complete jerk. I asked him why the Apple II did not use a character generator, and his response was, “Only a complete moron would use a character generator.” I found out decades later that he may have been referring to the Woz, who definitely wanted a character generator in the Apple II.

    Knowing what we know about Steve Jobs .. this actually makes perfect sense. The guy was obsessed with design, elegance , beauty and simplicity. A Mercedes Benz is a thing of beauty. Now imagine sticking an idiotic random government licence number on it " HXS-Y363". Not to mention that California license plates are very tacky with 4 different fonts, multiple colors, a sun and palm trees in the background etc. Horrible. Totally ruins the aesthetic of the car. Imagine your iphone with a sticker like that on it. Ughh!
