For those who asked about the point system... I agree that some features probably deserve higher weight such as the battle frontier. However, I didn't want to start making arbitrary decisions about how many points should be allocated for things like that. Who's to say the battle frontier shouldn't get 5 points, while no HMs (for me of course) shouldn't get 6? So even though it's not perfect, I felt it was the most fair way to do it.

This whole list is arbitrary without structure.

Though I have to agree with some people that a relevance system (maybe 1-3 points depending on how important the feature to the overall experience is) would've been reasonable, I think platinum fanboys are just mad that it didn't win by a landslide. I'm playing through platinum for the first time after 14 years right now and I gotta say the overabundance of HMs and some design choices (such as thinking defog should be in an optional area) are just mindboggling. People are just delusional about get IV in general (don't even get me started on HGSS).

@@SirLolcat No, personally, having played Sword and Shield after not playing since Black and White 2, I can see where most players are coming from about the old 2D games. There are definitely some quality of life improvements, and having HMs be a field move list rather than taking up battle moves IS a good improvement, don't get me wrong. But here's the overall problem with modern Pokemon compared to classic Pokemon: There's barely any of the Metroidvania world design that classic Pokemon used to have remaining, due to the lack of HMs.
Yes, the way they were implemented in the past wasn't good for the team-building experience. But they were vital to the world design. Having optional areas that exist behind abilities you get later, like Metroid, highly encourages exploration, and revisiting old areas to unlock new sections. Such world design no longer exists in modern Pokemon, and everything is reduced to a boring and empty hallway. As a result, people who play Pokemon for the "Adventure through a new region!" part of the advertised gameplay, get disappointed when said "adventure" is just being led down hallways by the nose. In fact, even the puzzles that used to exist (Strength puzzles, ice puzzles, etc.) are mostly gone now too, so not only do you have no exploration, you also have no need to think anymore. Even the only two caves in Sword and Shield weren't even multi-floor caves, but both slightly curvy hallways, which is just embarrassing.
I personally would rather play the poorly implemented HMs games, and know I have plenty of exploration I can do, than the HM-free games with zero exploration. HGSS offers the most in this regard as well, especially since the entire second half of the game is non-linear.

@@Allen-qs2xr totally, like having the Iv rater and items counting as two separate points, while the whole battle factory, battle arcades,... Are just put it into one point, while each of them is bigger.
Also at the beginning it was stated "just because a feature exists, it isn't good".
Having more legendary Pokemon in BDSP shouldn't thereby not be better, if catching them is just locked behind unfun stupid grinding.
Event pokemon in Bdsp being locked behind savegames from other games being better is also questionable, because this puts the game out of its vacuum. Many events from platinum are available through fanmade servers even after they were not available in bdsp anymore.
Some things are better in BDSP, but most of the ports and new things are of poor quality, with exception of the Pokemon in the great underground, this was done pretty well. The poketch is poorly designed as it just blocks part of the game.
A lot of fans are not angry because of nostalgia, but over the poor quality.

Nearly every single point awarded to BDSP in this video was awarded for being a newer game. Mints, charms, Fairies, etc. Stuff that didn't exist in 2008 when Platinum came out. Meanwhile Platinum took points in pretty much every category where the games were directly comparable.

Similarly, while bdsp brings in some modern qol improvements it also removes features that later became standard like infinite tms, and you can’t use the gen’s core gimmick of dynamax unlike oras which added new megas.
So while those aren’t applicable when comparing to Platinum they’re arguably negatives for bdsp overall.

  • @archiiebarrett
    @archiiebarrett 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1249

Simple. What killed BDSP, is the fact that, with HGSS and ORAS, we got remakes of older games, with up-to-date mechanics, all the new Pokemon and moves, and the current gimmicks, as well as little touches that made them stand out from the current mainline game... With BDSP, we only got a similar experience to the old game with some give and take for quality of life improvements.
People at least expected a SwSh style Diamond and Pearl experience while also revisiting Sinnoh with new Pokemon team options and perhaps new Dynamax forms. We got what felt like an afterthought.
That disappointment is why people would rather play the older game.

Yeah, and some added content. What new things does BDSP offer? Oh yeah, Ramanas park for catching legendaries from gens 1-3 and the finaly released Azure flute. So great. Much hype.

Lets also not forget people clamor for FAITHFUL REMAKES its what you hear all the fucking time. So we got a literal remake. It was headed by MASUDA you know the goat of pokemon. the one everyone loves so fucking much.
You get a carbon copy of Diamond and Pearl. You didnt get a PLATNIUM remake. the fact that this goes over peoples heads is mind fucking boggling. they addressed some of the biggest issues with old diamond and pearl namely the lack of fire types by adding and expanding the underground to make it a more fun/useful feature than an afterthought in all 3 iterations.
The actual problem with pokemon is that the community is stupid. They literally dont know what they want and are stuck on "not this, i want that" mode where no matter what we get what strides they try it gets shit on. They listen with gen 9 and are looking to try open world and already there is people complaining about graphics and shit. It NEVER ends. The community are children who never grew the fuck up. The classics are and always will be a classic. Its fucking ridiculous that people expect the classics to be remade again and again while also wanting new. The community in pokemon are the worst community by far for any genre in any game ever.
Its pure hivemind bullshit. Just like how as much as i love zelda BOTW had MAJOR flaws that just got over looked entirely because liking the new zelda is popular. And people would actually make fucking excuses for the abomination that was triforce heroes. Its pathetic.

I feel there was a lot of missed potential. I mean the actual "Sinnoh experience" from Gen 8 was Legends Arceus, but BDSP had everything to be a great game: DPPt already had an excellent region, Platinum's extended Pokedex was pretty great, there were great additions like customization, Pokemon following you, competitive accessibility (Mints, Bottle Caps, Ability Capsule/Patch), but they messed up pretty bad with things like limited TMs, sticking with Double Battles, not adding Platinum's new look on certain areas, and forcing things like Exp. Share and Friendship bonuses.
Overall, the game feels like a reskin of DP when the other remakes had things to offer: FRLG had the Sevii Islands, minigames, connectivity with RSE and an expanded story and character information with the Fame Checker and the Sevii Islands story; HGSS had A LOT to offer like the Battle Frontier, Pokeathlon, Safari Zone, all of Crystal features and connectivity with DPPt; even ORAS which was heavily criticized for the lack of Battle Frontier had Soaring, the Mirage Spots, Delta Episode, new Mega Evolutions, DexNav, and connectivity with XY; not counting all of them having ALL the features from previous games (new battle formats like 2vs2 or 3vs3, more Items, Natures/EVs/Abilities, new Pokemon and forms, unlimited TMs, move tutors, massive graphics, QoL and UI improvements, PSS and WiFi features, and other additions); whereas BDSP only give you certain improvements and even make other things worse like the Underground and Contests instead of expanding on them. Hell, they didn't even try to make it visually different and went for the same perspective when most people were expecting a SwSh like game.
They could have been amazing if they made at least Megas and Regional forms available on the Sinnoh Dex (only 2 Megas and like 3 regional forms would have been missing) as well as adding an update for Hisui forms and other Platinum goodies like the improved visuals in certain areas, the Villa or the Battle Frontier (at least some facilities). However, we received the weakest remake instead.

My one gripe with Legends Arceus is that it has no replay-ability for me. The over world feels too barren, textures pop in and out, etc... The story is not one I want to play again. In main series games, I feel like I can replay them with new teams and be connected with them. LA feels like I grind catching 200 of the same Pokemon and releasing them for materials. What I'm trying to say is that I feel like we never really got a true Sinnoh remake experience.

Platinum itself was already an enhanced remake of Diamond and Pearl. They didn't need to remake DP again, they needed to remake platinum to bring it up to recent generations. BDSP got a lot of those quality of life improvements, but none of the platinum content. Something like half of your points were just quality of life improvements, which the series hadn't been up to when Plat released. Almost none of the things you mentioned that were points for BDSP were things or content that plat didn't have, and it seems like about 2/3 of content was presented better in plat. Honestly if they just made a port of plat, with all the quality of life improvements I would have liked it a lot better, because BDSP doesn't do what I would like remakes to do: which is remake the game in the style of the current generation. I wanted to see sinnoh in 3d, like galar, with tons of new features! I think most fans wanted a GS -> HGSS like remake where they included some crystal content, and added a new route or two and included all the features of the new generation, etc. Instead we got what is essentially a near clone of the original game, in a new art style (that is "argueably" not better then the original, and I think many fans wouldn't even have included the word argueably), with numerous bugs, online features missing, and tons of disappointment. I don't agree with your numbering system much because you gave quality of life improvements so many points, but I do get its hard to start with a newer generation and go back to playing before those improvements.
It just sucks to see they didn't create a definitive edition of sinnoh. Platinum is better in many regards, and BDSP has some QoL improvements but overall I think its no comparison, Plat has much more to offer if you can only play 1 Sinnoh game. Its too bad, despite what you said near the end of the video they will never remake platinum, because they don't do that, which is why this is so sad: there will never be a definitive version of Sinnoh, although Plat is pretty damn close.

It's like how even though they're remakes of Gold and Silver, HGSS is really just Crystal re-split. FRLG you could say similarly is Blue re-split, but Blue didn't really add *that* much over Red and Green. But ORAS and BDSP aren't like the previous two, as ORAS is very much closer to RS than E, and BDSP is nowhere near Pt. Even then, ORAS allowed connection to the current generation sibling games, brought forward their main gimmick *and added to it* (even though canonically it makes ZERO sense). BDSP is just DP with a new coat of paint on a single screen that can connect directly to Home instead of having to transfer one-way through BW+2 into Bank and then into Home.

In terms of who is better:
    Pokemon Platinum
    Pros:
    -Great Storyline
    -Better quality of life
-Evolution items are obtained even before Elite 4
-Cynthia's team is way better here
-Pokemon from previous gens could be transferred via Pal Park
-Global trade station is way better
    -Arceus cutscene is awesome 👌
-Character designs are better than BDSP
    -Greater team building and diversity
-Fixes the Fire type issue from D/P
-Platinum ups the levels of the Gym Leaders
    -Exp Share is optional.
    Cons:
-Hidden Machines require two HM slaves instead of one.
-Battle Frontier is boring compared to Emerald.
    -Graphics are laggy at times.
    Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
    Pros:
-Shiny Charm is easier to obtain.
    -Trainers are challenging
    -EV training is easier.
    -Smooth battle transitions
    -No more HM's
    And that's it here.
    Cons:
-Many glitches, even more than Red/Blue, though the latter gets a pass.
-Softlocks! So many ways to softlock the game.
    -Unpolished battle animations
-Platinum based evolution items now locked to post game.
-EV training items are locked to post game.
-Elite 4 was way difficult even for expert players.
-Cynthia's team is way overpowered with nearly perfect IV's for almost all of her team.
    -Battle Tower AI cheats.
-Doing a level limit nuzlocke? Too Bad. Exp.Share is mandatory!
-GTS is limited to specific areas.
-You have trade pokemon from Home to BDSP. And no gen 5 onward are allowed.
-Gym Leaders don't use their Platinum teams.
    And the final con:
-Lack of quality of life. The game needs constant updates compared to Platinum, where everything is built into the game.
For Causal play, BDSP wins here over Platinum. However, if you want a challenge, go for Platinum.
    Finally tally:
    Platinum- 12
    BDSP- 5
Platinum is definitely the winner. It's just better overall not only for nostalgia but, it offers more of a variety of playthrough challenges than BDSP

And BDSP fails to provide 2021 standards and actually copy/pasted 95% of 2006 DS game diamond without even adapting the platinum improvements. Its so cringe that Platinum from 2008 is still better than BDSP..

    • @cyberdrache8416
      @cyberdrache8416 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Mqstodon In my opinion BDSP are the WORST remakes of all time. Here are some reasons why:
      1. Faithfulness: Unlike other remakes, this game literally copy & pastes 90% of the game from diamond/pearl. Diamond/Pearl are games from 2006. You cannot copy almost everything from a game that more than 10 years old. (Remember this is a remake not a remaster!). Almost everything is copied: All dialogs, the storyline, the chibi art style, the national dex, old pokemon encounters and even the Poketch were copy & pasted to this game. Pokemon games have been improved in the past years and had many quality of life changes like 3D art style, overworld Pokemon encounters and reusable TMs. None of these changes were
adapted to the game which is just sad. This game is too faithful and faithful sounds more like a excuse for lazyness.
      2. Not-Platinum-Based: So they copy & pasted 90% from the old Sinnoh game but not based on Platinum? Diamond & Pearl had several weaknesses and Platinum fixed many of them and included many Quality of Life changes. Here are some Platinum improvements over Diamond/Pearl: It extends the storyline with additional content, new dialogs, new characters like Charon and a new map Distortion world (loved it). The rival was a bit too weak in Diamond/Pearl which was fixed in Plat. The Poketch has a reverse Button. It has the battle frontier. And finally: the Sinnoh dex which was baaad in Dia/Pearl was fixed. The bad sinnoh dex in dia/pearl has only very few Fire Pokemon (very weird). Gym leaders were forced to use weird mons in the main game like Electric gym leader using Octillery or IceType gym leader using Medicham (WTF? Despite Sinnoh having enough Ice/Electric mons) and also many sinnoh mons were restricted to the postgame. Thats means many of the favourite sinnoh mons cannot be used in your team for the main story. But Platinum fixed this issue and created a NEW sinnoh dex which fixed all these issues which made the main story like a sinnoh game. ALL of these great changes of Platinum where NOT included in BDSP. This means BDSP uses the OLD sinnoh dex, OLD dialogs, OLD storyline, NO new character like Charon, NO distortion world and NO battle frontier. That makes BDSP a worse Sinnoh remake than Platinum which was released in 2008. (Imagine a 2008 DS game of the same Region beats you in ALL aspects. WTF)
      3. EXP-Share & Friendship-System: One of the most hated features is the EXP-Share system which often leads to WAY more exp than in the past games. In my opinion, the EXP-Share is not too bad. BUT diamond/pearl were not designed to be played with the new EXP-Share system. So if you include an EXP-Share system, you have to increase all levels of the pokemon (from opponent). But they didnt which makes the difficulty of this game too easy.Basically, my whole team was too oveleveled. And the friendship-system is the worst luck-based system i ever saw. A feature that increases the Critical hit-chance,removes paralysis, lets me dodge 100% accurate moves and even lets me survive moves with 1HP. WTF did you smoke gamefreak? And the worst is that, you cannot make any of these optional. Because of that many players who love to do a nuzzlock in Sinnoh, prefer the old DS games.
      3. No Innovation: This game not only copy & pastes the majority of its content, it adds nothing new to the game. Lets review some good remakes: HeartGold/SoulSilver (HG/SS) were Gen 2 remakes and included some storyline from Crystal and added many new stuff like the pokeathlon, battle frontier (from sinnoh), gen 1 map/storyline, a complete national dex and the pokewalker. HG/SS were not copy & pasted, but actually remade the game and added good new stuff. Also Alpha ruby&omega saphire (ORAS) have new changes like new art-style , new designs for Team magma/aqua, new Mega-forms, new Primal forms, changes to dialogs and storyline and the complete national dex. BDSP on the other hand does not provide any kind of major change in the game which makes this game really boring. It does have a new Underground which has overworld pokemon, but that is nothing special for 2022 and the ramanas park was neat but nothing too exciting.
      4. Underground/Super-Contest: The old underground allowed to create your own living room with furnitures and set traps to troll friends online. Both were removed for a statue system which is really boring. Collecting statues and the effects of the statues are really disapointing. The Super-Contest used to be a fun-mode where you had many different options and varities and had to have good reflexes to do
the correct moves at the correct time. Now all you have to do is Press A at the correct time and use 1 attack. That makes this mode so boring and disapointing. I mean, was it really that hard to let the player press like 4 different buttons instead of just 'A'??
      5. Art-Style: Many of us expected a modern review of Sinnoh in a 3D human like Art-style. But they decided to go for the Chibi-Art-Style. Everyone has different tastes but in my opinion the Chibi-Art-Style ruins many serious moments of the story line of this game, especially vs team galactic. It feels like all the emotions of the characters were removed. The reason why it was used in Diamond/Pearl was because of the limited hardware. In my opinion the Chibi-Art-Style waas the wrong decision and does not suit a switch game at all.
      6. Only Gen 4: BDSP has a national dex which includes the pokemon from Gen 1-4 which is basically the same as Diamond/Pearl. As a player who would have loved to see at least some Pokemon from Gen 5-8 in Sinnoh, i am very disappointed. At least some Pokemon post Gen4, or some new forms or at least add Sylveon in this game. Not even mega-forms were included in this game. The fact that 95% of the megas are from Gen1-4 and the underground being the perfect place to grind the mega-stones, makes this decision even more disapointing. The reason why diamond/pearl was limited to Gen 1-4 was because there werent any other new pokemon. The reason why BDSP limited the game to Gen 1-4 is because of lazyness..
      7. PVP: On of the worst things in this game is everything arround PVP. The worst disrespect a main series pokemon game can get, is when GameFreak calls that all the competitive tournaments including the world championship will not take place in BDSP (WTF?). Unlike Sword/Shield, you have no option to search for PVP matches which makes it way harder to find battles. But the worst thing is the grind for a PvP team: TMs are not reusable (WHY?!). For some important TMs like Earthquake, you have to grind for 80BP (WTF. Thats a lot of Grind). Also you cannot catch pokemon with hidden abilities except those from poke radar. To get the hidden ability you have to grind for the ability patch for 200BP (WTF. Grind competitive to create a competitive. Nice system). By putting important PVP items behind such ridiculously high grind walls, it makes creating a PVP team disgusting.
      8. Events: The events were also copy & pasted from Diamond/Pearl. Same Shaymin event, same Darkrai event. And other events are only accesible if you bought other main series pokemon game (Why..). And finally some garbage "events" which include some useless statues. Meanwhile, the 3 year old SW/SH getting better and innovative events like new PVP cups/tournaments and some legendary shinies. In my opinion the events in BDSP are disapointing.
      9. Bugs/Glitches: Holy Moly! This game had so many bugs and glitches! You dont even need hacks, when the game itself has to many glitches. Many of them where completely broken. Many Pokemon clone glitches and item dupe glitches ruined the game. You could even get infinity money, create your own shinies (WTF), make your pokemon 6IV and let any Pokemon learn any move. I used to be in a discord for trading in BDSP and because of the glitches, the trade market was only about getting shiny 6IVs etc. Not to forget to mention the soft locks which made you restart the whole game which can happen for example in the ice gym. Usually every games has a few bugs. But this one had too many and too many game breaking glitches. A very hyped game like this shouldnt be developed by a 3rd party company.. But Gamefreak had other plans..
      10. Controls: The controls of this game feel weird and uncomfortable. Characters move in a grid which looks so weird during the storyline. The pokemon who follow me often block me in a bad way. The underground has many inivisible walls which makes moving in some rooms horrible. And finally the control with the cycle are the worst. The cycle in pokemon games are a beloved feature but in this game.. It feels so uncomfortable moving with the cycle, I sometimes even prefer walking.
      11. The original Game dia/pearl and also Platinum was sold for like 40$. Meanwhile the clearly inferior game BDSP was sold for 60$. And now if you think about it: That 90% of the game was purely copy & pasted and has plenty of weaknesses and bugs, you realize that BDSP is just a cow getting melked -> Its clearly a rip-off!
      12. Conclusion: It feels like GameFreak didnt want to do a Sinnoh remake but wanted to milk some money by releasing the highly demanded Sinnoh remake. The fact that, they hired a 3rd party company who never developed a major game, only supports this theory. Not forget to mention that, BDSP had a giant day one patch which was essential to enjoy the game. The fact that they released Legends Arceus almost 1-2 months after BDSP release also supports the theory, that they didnt care at all for this remake. Because of the release of Legends Arceus, the hiring of ILCA, the amount of glitches, the boring events, the exclusion of VGC, the 0 Innovation in this game and the fact that the majority of the game is copy & paste of a 2006 game (Dia/Pearl) which is worse than a 2008 Game (Platinum), makes this game the worst remake of all time in my opinion.

With the limited options on team members for a good team during the initial play through of each Gen game, we got accustomed and even still meme about the best HM mules just to get through each game. With the need of an HM mule removed from the party it opens your party up more to have a better gameplay experience.

Where BDSP ultimately stumbled was the missed potential & Identity Crisis it had. The game wanted to be "A faithful Remake" of Diamond & Pearl, which is baffling considering DP had a lot of issues that Platinum ironed out. This included and is not limited to
    *Expanding the base Pokedex Roster
    *Giving more lore to Sinnoh
*Making the overall game a bit more challenging
    *Adding the Battle Frontier
*Redesigning certain areas that needed a bit more polish & flair
*Attempting to fix DP's Molasses speed issues.
The remakes kept almost 0 of Platinum's improvements, while it did have some QoL changes we've come to expect, it doubled down on many of DP's Shortcomings. Not to mention the forced EXP Share & Friendship does cut down on the game's difficulty, which unreasonably spikes hard near the tail end of BDSP for almost 0 reason.
When people wanted a gen 4 remake, they wanted QoL built on Platinum's coattails, not the inferior Diamond & Pearl version of Sinnoh. Every other remake has incorporated something from its 3rd version or at the very least added new features to the table. BDSP barely does any of that honestly besides the Underground Biomes. It seemed BDSP took 1 step forward & 3 steps back, not because the games were incapable, but rather due to baffling design choices. At the end of the day, who was this game made for exactly?

Except that HGSS included literally all of the content that Crystal introduced no problem, so it WAS a remake of Crystal, just with the same Pokemon that Gold and Silver individually had. ORAS on the other hand didn't faithfully add in everything that Emerald had but it did try to provide completely new features that would work as either alternatives to the content that Emerald had or just straight up full expansions that none of the OG Gen 3 games had (like the complete redesigning of Mauville or the Abandoned Ship).
BDSP could have easily added most, if not all of the content that was in Platinum or provide a decent alternative that mixed in well with whatever changes they had made that prevented them from giving us said qualities, but instead they completely gimped out in so many different things that they had no reason to not provide, and yet still providing A FEW that were randomly added in...why?
The entirety of those two games just feel like a fever dream in terms of design.

As far as remakes go, I've played FRLG and HGSS as well, and BDSP are actually my favorite Pokemon remakes ever, and 4th favorite Pokemon games overall (only behind Black and White 2, Legends Arceus and of course Platinum in that order).
One thing regarding the EXP share though, is it can be "baby mode" but ONLY if you don't go with it's own pace. The EXP share is supposed to prevent unnecessary grind and make the games much less tedious, which is exactly what happens in SW/SH, Legends Arceus and S/V. That way you don't have to grind so much just to train your Pokemon, and not just to evolve specific Pokemon like Abra.
Overall, I enjoyed the hack out of those games, and I really think that people need to stop with the nostalgia and fanboism goggles, and understand what these games really bring to the table.

      @RoyArkon ปีที่แล้ว

@@GameSmith45 Well it was optional back then as well. The problem is that it was the opposite (with no EXP share) by default, and the vast majority of people don't have the time to grind 6 Pokemon, let alone more than that.

It seems rather nonsensical that Platinum loses points because of some codes being unusuable decades after its release when BDSP already has unobtainable content only a few years after release, with some being locked behind a paywall on top of that. With time, all of the games are gonna have unobtainable content, including bdsp.
As for IVs, they were originally meant to make each pokémon unique. You didn't really need to perfect all of them to get through your playthrough, it was only important for competitive but the thing about competitive is that if it is hard for you so it is for your opponent and the dedication to build your team was just as much part of the competition as planning your moves (which can be both good and bad, as it can be rewarding but also less accessible). On top of that, the premise of the video was to judge the games based on the gameplay, yet we are discussing a competitive scene that has mainly moved on from both bdsp and platinum.
Other than that, i do understand the dislike towards HM, but i do disagree that having some occasional limitations to team building is inherantly bad and that it affects the gameplay in Platinum as much as reiterated in the video, as most of them are very situational, aside from Fly and Surf, which are not bad moves themselves. Moves like Defog which you mentioned is only really used about twice and you can easily replace the HM holder after traversing said place.
Overall, i think some aspects aren't really comparable and can't be quantified at all, like bdsp trainers not being built around the new exp. and affection system impacts the entire playthrough and it is not something that can be reduced to a mere -1 point as opposed to something like the inclusion of a small quality of life improvement made by other game.

I think that this was a very fair way of doing this but I think there’s two caveats you missed.
One: BDSP is also grindy. You give Platinum a reserved point for the villa but forget that to get the charms you need to complete the Sinnoh and National Dex to get them.
Two: You give BDSP a point for a more balanced move-set and Pokémon choice for the post-game Barry fight but don’t mention how the rest of the game keeps other weird NPC Pokémon and move choices, like the Electric type leader having a Water-type. Platinum deserved an easy point for fixing this, especially since it’s one of the main talking points people bring up in its favour.
Still, this is nitpicking. Great video.

Funny enough, those other legendaries, the johto trio and kyogre and groudon were essentially behind a similar paywall in hgss. And I feel this video goes more to show how bad bdsp is instead of how the two compare. Had bdsp been based off of platinum as it's base, there is no way platinum would have been able to compare. It is such a wasted potential.
The fact that platinum held up so well against a much newer game, is a slam against bdsp. That alone makes me feel justified in my nostalgic love of this game.
Also, I like the limitations of hms to a degree. I think there was a way to have both. Not having to learn hms was nice...but it also kind of broke my immersion as well. It didn't feel like legitimate progression, rather being superficial. I understand where you come from, but I'm someone who enjoys the limitations. Nice vid, nicely structured, the points well presented in a very pleasant manner. BDSP was so disappointing to me as a Gen 4 fan, as they pretty much ignored all the improvements that Platinum made over Diamond and Pearl. The Quality of life features are nice, but it's a similar story as Mario & Luigi Paper Jam back in 2015 but even worse: the QoL would be great if it was in a better game, but it doesn't save the game itself.
I'm glad you appreciated Gen 4 Music, I think it's OST is absolutely beautiful and while BDSP has some nice remixes, so many tracks just lack the original punch, sound way too synthetic and have weird mixing choices, like key instruments in the original tracks being buried in the mix and at a much lowered, less noticeable volume.
The affection mechanic is easily my least favourite part though, just like the exp. share, I don't understand why they keep forcing you to use previously optional things. Like if my Pokemon can survive moves all the time, cure their status conditions, dodge 100% accurate moves...then why am I even thinking at all? It's like you're playing on baby mode at that point. And you can't turn it off or reverse it unless you get your Pokemon knocked out or feed them bitter medicine. I hope to god this shit is not in Scarlet and Violet. Like what's the point of harder E4 and Cynthia if you can just cheese them with the power of friendship? Not to mention the awful difficulty curve going from everything handed to you on a Silver Platter to straight up Competitive Teams with items at the very end. Strange decisions made with this game

    Also just putting this out.
I don't like giving the points for updates that have been pioneered by other games. The lack of HM's, the box access update, hyper training, etc would have been present in a PLAT remake, I would actually dock BDSP for not fully implementing QL updates featured in previous games(non-breaking TM being the big one especially with how horrible reobtaining TM's can get in BDSP.)
Also you forgot to mention the initial battle with the E4 as BDSP's E4 was extremely lacking in type consistency where's PLAT didn't have that issue.

Honestly, I think I would rather replay Platinum if I were to replay one. In BDSP it was extremely easy to become over levelled, there was absolutely no challenge at all in the game. The EXP share wasn't designed for this game, so it gave out too much EXP overall. The EXP levels awarded needed adjusting to account for it.
I think I would have to grin and bare it with the HM's, which I have always hated. But ultimately in Platinum they added as much content as they could, while in BDSP they mainly added only what they needed to... I don't see why they didn't base the remakes off Platinum but still divide them into Diamond and Pearl with some of those version differences. BDSP were fairly fun but forgettable overall.

Never had an issue with HM's really, to how others have the "great disdain" for them. I find surf to still be a very good all out water move, other hms are a bit annoying though but nothing too serious. Now though, such HM moves are gone with the wind and I feel that something is utterly missing from pokemon. Where with strength you had to roll boulders as if it were a puzzle or rocksmash, it made it a bit of a challenge. What arceus remedied, is giving you a flute, and you summon a pokemon that can use that special move, to fly, or to surf. Smart. Secondly is that each pokemon unlocks with the challenge of fighting them, just like the badges of old being tied to obtaining the HM, double smart.
Sadly I still would think it would be cool if I flew with my own pokemon or surfed on their backs, but this like the pokeflute of arceus, would have them use it as another ability and not an actual move after a certain gym was won.
Oh and Platinum was still very good.

When I use HM'S, I would like it to be on having an option for an branch to an different path for shortcuts or an side fetch for extra goodies. Not making an road block in which it's the only way to reach your destination for about 70% of your time. Sinnoh is just the worst on how they handled HM'S. Hoenn has this problem as well. Buddy you never played Gen 5 then, they were getting out of control in that game.
Is Fairy needing a nerf? Yes. But did it help keeping dragons in control? Yes.
Its not like Cynthia is easier with Fairy types.

All they could slay buffet 😂😂. But nah they’re super effective against toooo many types and resist anything even slightly offensive. They’re overkill. i absolutely HATE that they made storage boxes accessable without going to a pokémon center. it makes the game way too easy. imagine you're in a cave in the original games and your party is super low on health. you have to leave the cave and find a pokémon center, or your pokémon might all faint if you haven't stocked up on potions. in bdsp, you can just swap out your pokémon for fully healed ones and you're fine. it's ridiculously stupid.

I do wish they had kept platinum story elements, but some aspects like gym leaders being more challenging, no forced hm slaves and being able to traverse the bloody northern snow fields faster were nice, also, being able to get pokemon underground, some of which you couldn't get until post game was also a nice feature, though I do wish we also could've kept more secret base customizing.
these remakes are above FR/LG to me, but still lower than OR/AS and HG/SS which is still the best remakes to this day. For those wondering why I rank this, the Sevii islands weren't really all that interesting to me, and the restriction factor FR/LG had in the fact that you could not use any pokemon outside of the original 151 until you got the national dex is what really held it back, at the time being the first remake I wouldn't have seen it as such, but seeing what other remakes we've gotten since have brought to the table, it does feel like the worst to me.

I’d never played platinum, and BDSP was my first experience into Sinnoh. While I now modded my 3DS and have been able to experience it, a lot of quality features in games like BDSP like experience share and over mid bar difficulty fit my lifestyle, though when I reached BDSP elite four I had to take drastic measures and import level 100 teams because again, I’m not that dedicated to the craft of making the perfect team.
I enjoy platinum and it’s story as well as the charm of the old DS graphics, but the newer games are going to hold me over for other stuff like the legendary and shiny pokemon.

The single problem with BDSP is that they aren't actual remakes... they're remasters, and very, very uninspired ones at that. So far, all past revisions of old generations have been remakes, with significantly improvements over their original games, with that peaking with ORAS, but BDSP kinda ignored all that and chose to stick to the original formula... of DP, with are terrible games. To me, Legends Arceus felt more like an actual homage to the 4 gen than this hot garbage mess

Currently doing a run of 8 Nuzlockes, one per region. It speaks volumes for at least my thoughts on BDSP that I’m playing ORAS, HGSS and FRLG (I consider Let’s Go a different sort of series), but I’m choosing Platinum for my Sinnoh experience. I’m willing to hop around multiple generations in the wrong order (3>4>6>4) because I think that highly of HGSS and ORAS, so for BDSP to drop the ball in terms of originality to the point that they fail to include stuff they made in 2009 for the sake of staying true to its roots is just heinous to me.

    • @GameSmith45

I feel like I never see this brought up, and I don't think it really "adds" to BDSP at all, but I really like the new small sprites used for your pokemon, both when looking in your party and in the PC box. They just look so smooth, and I hope SV uses them (or alternatively, uses the face close-ups like are used in Legends).
Also, with regards to difficulty, I find it pretty funny that if it weren't for the exp share and affection mechanics, BDSP would probably be the most difficult game in the series due to Gym Leaders, Elite 4, and Cynthia having fully IV and EV trained pokemon, using competitive-level movesets, items, and strategies.

4 minutes in and there it is, "HMs bad." HMs were a key component of the series for 17 years. They provide one of the very few puzzle elements in the overworld. Move deleters and relearners with TMs give you plenty of options to work movesets around. If one of your Pokemon is stuck with a bad HM move for a bit, that just increases the game's difficulty, which last I checked, is something a lot of Pokemon fans have been asking for.

I don't mind HM'S. But as long as it's used for optional stuff or for side fetch stuff that are optional and not the amount of used through your main progression for about 70% of the time. Platinum has way too many of them that are required for you to progress. Without it, you ain't going anywhere unless u give it to Pokemon that u may or may not wanted them to learn it if u wanted as your main team member. And yes. U can go to an deleter to removed them. But there's still more HM'S coming that u needed and u can't get rid of them just yet until u reach the Pokemon League. That's the big problem there. Not to mentioned moves like Defog & Rock Climb aren't good moves.

When you are doing a remake, you HAVE to: 1 Do everything you did before, 2 Do it better, 3 Add new Stuff.
Heart Gold & Soul Silver are the kings of this... simply putting EVERYTHING what fans love, doing it better, and adding more stuff.
BDSP lack in this HARD... especially because it SHOULD used the graphics of the current gen, that is Sword & Shit....
But the laziness of GameFreak of doing a great 3D world map make them to create a Copy/Paste game...

As crappy as these remakes are - especially in comparison to the older remakes - I'm certain I would have been able to find some enjoyment in them if they had only made the goddamn exp. share optional again. That aspect has to be the one thing about modern Pokémon that I hate the most and also the one thing that does the most damage to the overall experience in my mind.

Very well put together video. While I do think you missed some things, they were minor and I still don't think it would change the result too much. Gen 4 is my favourite generation by far and despite the let downs and missed opportunities of BDSP, I still enjoy the game a ton. I agree overall Platinum is the better game, however the overall quality of life improvements which did persist do make me enjoy casually playing BDSP more than Platinum. Whilst it's a classic and still very enjoyable, it just feels so clunky compared to the new games and that makes the new games so much more appealing to me. With nostalgia bias on diamond also playing a role, it does make it so if I had the choice to play either game on their respective systems, I'm almost certain I'd pick BDSP. ...Now if only Dialga would finally be shiny I would be able to properly back this up.

What I'd love for EXP Share? Is a toggle for Each Pokemon. So if there is a certain Mon that is over levelled, you could choose for it to not gain EXP through sharing.
E.G If I had my starter at 20 and another at say 15. But then caught something at say...10? I'd normally use the lvl 15 so I can get it and the weakest up in skills. Would be cool if I could toggle it for my starter so they don't suddenly end up at like 23/24.

I get the attempt with this video trying to make a specific way to numerically see which game was better. But BDSP just has so many issues and polish that platinum made years ago. It’s not a fully finished game and some features just felt shoehorned in to just make people like it (such as following Pokémon that just don’t work properly).
Tbh the best way to play Sinnoh is likely Platinum but with mods people are making BDSP so much better that with mods is better to play. Soon we’ll have that be a game with so much content and experience that it will be the overall better experience by a long shot. But until then we’ll have to wait

There are several issues that I believe have not been adequately addressed in the new remake. Little regard has been given to Contests and the Pokétch's app, which are some of the most scandalous aspects. Many problems exist in this remake that I believe have been downplayed.
I had hoped for some functionality from the PokéNav to be carried over to the Pokétch, but unfortunately, nothing was implemented.
This includes the ability to search for Pokémon in the grass, which was essential in this generation where Pokémon are still randomly encountered. Even in the search tools app, they could have added a passive search function, but instead, you still have to actively search. It's the exactly same feel as if you're constantly pressing the A button to search. This was also a problem in the Platinum version, and it's disappointing that they didn't improve it in the remake, considering it was such an obvious issue.
Furthermore, there is no reference to some out-of-combat moves.
For instance, "Sweet Scent" is unusable on trees, even though all you need is the smell of honey to attract Pokémon to them. It's another missed opportunity for improvement.
Additionally, "Flash" continues to exist as an HM, serving as a separate and useful out-of-combat move for navigating the labyrinth cave.
These out-of-combat moves haven't even been given a hotkey or integrated into the Pokétch.
You still have to manually select them from the menu, which renders Sweet Scent practically useless, even for searching for Pokémon in tall grass. It's simple, fast, and better to use the bike and turning around in the grass.
Overall, these issues in the remake have been largely overlooked, and it's evident that minimal effort has been made to address them.
