This was a great video, Val! I have been struggling the past few months, and after watching this video, realized that a lot of it is mental! Thank you for opening my eyes!
I absolutely love this video!!! This is a topic that I wish more professional bowlers would talk about. I definitely have negative thoughts. The first one I have is when I am bowling bad, and there’s a person who’s killing it and they’re using the same ball as me. The second one is when I am throwing amazing shots, yet I’m not striking. Then a person next to me or a person I’m going against in league throws an ugly shot and they strike. I be so defeated. What I try to do is remind myself that I have the skills and that I know what I’m doing. I’ll think back to my previous shots and make an adjustment rather it be a ball or moving left or right. Before my next shot I’ll put on music in my headphones to block out my surroundings. When I am in the approach I’ll close my eyes and take a deep breath before I go. Usually (not always) when you take a second or two to examine your shots, you can see what you need to do. Lastly, sometimes it’s just not your night. Right now I am in a slump, bad slump. I haven’t shot over 160 in over a month. Luckily my teammates reminded me that earlier this year he was in a similar slump and during that time myself and our other teammate carried us. Having a good support system is huge and understanding that sometimes it’s not your night. Again I love that you made this video and I do apologize for the long comment 😋😋😋
Great topic!! A pre shot routine for me is so so important! A tournament, league or practice it’s always the same. Strike or spare. Mention some books that you recommend. I have my favs. As you mentioned slowing the breath is important. A trick I do is to stare at a spot on the floor. Works all the time!
Thanks for the video. It's something I need to keep working on. Three weeks ago, while bowling league, I started well enough, then in game 2, my thumb got stuck a few times, making me miss the target (ended up in the gutter twice) and my game went to pieces. Even after removing the tape that as in the thumb hole, I was so concerned about getting my thumb stuck that I dropped the ball a few times before my intended release. It was tough to try to calm myself down, while trying to keep up with others bowling on the same pair. Games 3 and 4 were better after I tried what my wife suggested (through a text message) - take a deep breath, smile, then start my approach.
How about discussing shame-based bowling, where someone thinks they're a bad person because they're mired i a slump, and their self-worth is tied to their bowling scores. Thanks Valerie for having Brianna on and look forward to more about the mental game.
Excellent. Thank you so much for this informative video 👍🏻💐👏🏻

A pre shot routine is absolutely the best way to improve your mental game. Do the same pre shot routine for your spares as well.
I think the most negative thought I hear on the lanes is "I have made the last five 10 pins, the misses are coming!"
