    I switched from 15lbs to 14lbs for my two league balls, and just bought a new spare ball, which I dropped down another pound, to a 13lb ball, and I'm loving them all. I'm 68+, so I'm not as strong as I used to be, and these lighter balls have helped me a great deal.

    I switched to 14 lb 3 seasons ago due to Golfer's Elbow. There are some balls, usually assyms, that you have to watch the specs on, but overall it's been a positive experience going to 14

    Thanks for this. I had to switch to 14 a few years back, and I keep thinking I need to go back to 15 to score, but this is proof that maybe I don't. You rarely get to see a straight comparison like this.

    I'm impressed I drilled A few 14's and when I would switch back and forth the weight difference would mess with my timing, My issue with the 14 is that unless I was in deep with it I would throw it past the break point because amazingly enough to me that one pound makes a huge difference. I think I carried better with the 14 because now that I am old and can't throw a 15 past 15mph the extra ball speed helped with carrying the light hits

    Hmmm... I'm 60 but in rather good shape and pretty good strength. Recently I joined a league for the first time, and I bought a 14lb Storm ball. I felt it was tipping me over and I definitely bowled worse than with a 12lb house ball. So, I purchased a 12lb Storm Tropical Surge. Over the last several weeks, I have managed to go from sucking to about where I was with scoring with a 12lb house ball. Last league night though - average bumped up from mid 130s to 147. Now, I do have that 14lb ball available in reserve. I wonder if my technique was more at fault vs. the weight of the ball, i.e. keeping my head up. Honestly, I can't imagine given my decent strength that 14lbs is too much. But, who knows. I may now go practice with the 14lb ball - I haven't thrown it since purchasing.

  • @firstivuslastivus3349

    Jason and I have been having a conversation about exactly this. I contend that a bowling ball with the higher mass will create more pin action than one of lower mass. Jason says that 16lb balls represent only 2% of the balls that are manufactured, and so the core is engineered better for balls that are 14 and 15 lb. But I still see the difference in the pin action, as I favor the 16 lb Ball versus the 15 lb ball. On paper, I think your 15 lb ball should hit harder and more efficiently than the 14-lb ball against 35 lb of pins. That you're also looking at track shape On the lanes was something I had never considered. I really appreciate your videos, and this one has got me thinking!

    • @dysfunctionaldave
      @dysfunctionaldave 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @firstivuslastivus3349 you're looking at ball weight as a variable in isolation. If all other things are identical, then you're right- higher weight equals higher carry. But in reality you have to consider entry angle, ball speed and rev rate- and all of these are likely to change if you throw a lighter weight. Almost no one throws 16 now as 15 has equivalent or better carry thanks to those variables, and now that 14lb cores are becoming closer to the 15lb (in the case of AI cores, identical) the same trend is happening- you gain a little ball speed and revrate with 14lb which offsets the 1lb weight difference, the core has similar RG numbers now, and you also experience less tendon fatigue- even if you are strong and fit. Just look at the number of elbow+wrist injuries suffered by PBA players, even those who are incredibly fit and strong. Reduced long term damage to your elbow is a smart thing to consider, because once you develop tendinitis it's a real issue to get rid of without taking a very extended break. And if you're relatively strong, that probably means you have a physically demanding job, you spend a lot of time in the gym, or you do other activities that are physically demanding. These things add up. Taking care of the longevity of your body is not something to be ashamed of, and now we don't have to worry about it limiting bowling performance either- so what's not to love?

      @@dysfunctionaldave Well said! Most, if not all PBA men are now throwing 14 -15 Lb. balls these days!

      People have done tests. 16 lbs actually give worse carry of the three but u hit the hardest. 15 gives you decent carry and hits in the middle. And 14 gives u the best carry but doesn’t hit as hard. This is due to pin deflection and how the 16 keeps rolling through the pins whereas the 14 will slightly bounce off u will get more pin action with 14 but that’s why everyone’s on 15 lbs bc it’s the middle ground

    • @Fate826
      @Fate826 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Think of it as a car. A car hits the wall how it crumples to half the size to relieve the energy. That energy is going somewhere else. In our for instance it’s the pins. The 14 lbs loses the most energy in the ball but the pins gain the most energy. Whereas if a car didn’t crumple the person inside would carry all the energy. In our case it’s the ball. So although it may hit harder that doesn’t always mean better pin deflection.

    I switched from 15lbs to 14lbs a few years back and I really should have done so 20 years ago. The difference in carry is negligible but 14lbs feels way better. Its still about bein in the right part of the lane with the right ball in your hands.

    I couldn't see the label on the 14 lb ball and you never told us before each shot which weight you were throwing.
    Pure physics tells us the same core in a lighter weight will allow the core to overcome the weight of the ball easier and be more dynamic.

    I'm 65 years old and went to a 14 lb. from a 15 lb. ball! Best thing I did, as I can get under the equator of the ball much better, keep my ball speed up, and my accuracy and controllability (If that's a real word!) is slightly better! The pin carry is not different from the 15 to 14 lb. ball from what I can tell! 206 average from 194 in my league since dropping to 14 lb, and looking to improve from that!

    I bought a 14 lbs RST 3 for my other half some time ago. It hooked too much for her lower ball speed. Now after watching this video - I have to try it again cause I did notice something similar when I threw it, subbing in league, about a year ago ( no pots, so I was fooling around). I had had it re-drilled for me to practice two handed (didn't work - hooked too early). Now I have to retrieve it from the garage and clear out the cobwebs. As I recall, that night I did play deeper with it and every ball, I expected it not to carry but it did. I think I shot 740/750 with it. I thought it was a fluke as I was more focused on Isaac Newton and that mass x velocity thingie (and I have "pooh poohed lower weights in the past.) So just for minds like me N and E - the 14lbs tender to have a lower RG??

    are there differences in ball speed? I have used 15lb for decades (60 yr old female) and now suffer with low ball speed. Problem is when I tried 14, my ball speed did not change. What did chage for me was my accuracy. The 14lb was all over the place. while I was way more consistent with the 15. Could be just a matter of practise. My normal stance on my house shot is stand 35, aim 15, 10 at range finders.
