The Sega Final Fight homebrew is very impressive, no doubt. However, it is an unfair comparison considering the SFC port was on a small 8 megabit cart done very early in the SFC lifespan under a strict deadline since it was among the first games released. Even the missing bar patrons in stage 3 somehow got past quality control. This Sega port has the luxury of a much larger ROM size, decades of experience and documentation of the hardware and no pressure from corporate bosses wanting to meet a release date.
Having said that, the MD does have the advantage of the 320x224 resolution mode and seems to handle more large sprites on screen although this port does show some pretty severe slowdown and sprite flicker at times.

    • @kamranki
      @kamranki 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I agree and disagree. The slight extra resolution of MD makes no difference to sprite size and most MD / SNES games used identical sprites for this reason. Arcades did have even higher resolution, more processing grunt and loads of ROM space to allow for larger sprites.

Well, Final Fight was one of the first SNES games after the launch titles. A new attempt with a ROMsize of 32megs, three playable characters, 2 player mode and all stages included would be very interesting!

Ok I just want to compliment you on your editing skills. Clearly a lot of work has gone into this video. I'm literally only 1 minute in and it's already the best side by side comparison I've ever seen. No disrespect but I'm not sure if I've ever seen your channel before but I love content like this so I hope there's more after this 😀👌. Megadrive v SNES are usually the most popular but I'm always keen to see side by sides of the NES v Master System simply because like most people I guess I've always been more of a Nintendo fan but in recent years looking back now, it's hard to ignore just how fantastic Sega's 8-Bit colour palette was so it would be nice to see comparisons of games released on both systems, visually along with performance. Videos like this.... it's the only way to be sure 😉

Granted they have had an extra 30 years to maximize the power of the Genesis/Mega Drive, but this is beyond impressive!
Final Fight was one given to me the Christmas I got my SNES, along with F-Zero. I had my hands full with awesome new games and a new machine to play them on. I loved Final Fight, but had no idea what a downgrade the SNES version was from its arcade counterpart.
The Genesis/Mega Drive version is damn near a carbon copy, from what I can tell. Honestly, it’s a good thing this never came out way back when, because we never would have gotten Streets of Rage if it had.
Mad love for this awesome version of this awesome game!❤❤❤❤

Streets of Rage was a SEGA 1st-party game, so it would've still happened regardless... The extra competition on the same console would only mean that we would be getting even more and higher quality beat 'em up games to choose from. So, no BIG loss at all!

60 FPS- 4 Enemies Standard Game (Gameplay Footage)
30 FPS- 6 Enemies Extended Game For Standard Console
60 FPS- 6 Enemies Extended Game For Overclocked CPU
I guess that makes sense with the first option. Not a expert or anything but its shown at points. Haggar and Guy move about smoothly and so does the stage elements. But when chaotic situations like around 12:07 with Haggar, Guy, 4 enemies, and stage props everything slows down.

Simply by the fact that the MD version has a 2-player option, it completely sweeps away the SNES version.
If we also add that it has larger characters, with many more animations, no stupid black bars, ideal resolution, more game options, no censorship and a color and sound very similar to the arcade version, the decision is clear.
And we're seeing a beta version on MD! There are still many things to add and improve!
But realistically, if you want to play a version of Final Fight on a home console today, the MD versions are undoubtedly the right choices.

The Genesis version is on top here. Of course it benefits from the programming knowledge of the last 30+ years. It still has slowdown and flicker present when too many sprites are being used on screen, but it is presenting a 2 player game with more detailed levels, more enemies on screen and full transitions between stages.
The Snes version was impressive at the time, but had to cut plenty of things when it was released; one of the characters, 2 player simultaneous, background detail, and complete stages and enemies where dropped.
Sequels on the Snes did have 2 player gameplay, I wonder if a version closer to the arcade original could also be produced on the Snes now?

The Genesis one blows the SNES version out of the water despite its obvious limitation in color palette. However, it's being developed without the limitations that developers faced back in the 1990's. They were strict to their SDKs and whatever they could pull off with tight timelines and limited budget and resources, and cart space constraints (which affected the cost of the end product). Also it was not of their interest to make home versions that could compete directly with their own arcade version. So, while it's true that Capcom gave lots of attention to their SNES conversions, they always made watered-down versions for the home consoles and it was up to their developers to exploit the strenghts of each console. In the end I'm happy to see how powerful the Genesis could be if given enough resources, but a homebrew for the Super Nes in 2024 could potentially be a lot better than the original as well, exactly because developers today have so many more resources.

I had gifted this to my niece way back in the day and this past Christmas she gifted them back. I gave them to her when she was about 10 (she's now 32) and now that I got them from her, I'm playing them at the ripe age of 52! And guess what, still works. No red ring of death, no yellow light of death, no disc stuck in the drive, no hard drive failing. Just enjoyable games that transcend generations. Food for thought...

It was a very powerful machine for its time. For some reason Sega wanted backwards compatibility with the Master System and that is the reason for the small color palette. Otherwise it could have had thousands of colors. Also, for cost reasons, Sega couldn't include scaling. 2 years later it was cheap enough for Nintendo to put in their SNES. Also, the sound chip was custom for the SNES and was way better than the Genesis. But I don't think people realize that the SNES was 2 years newer and back then, computing power grew exponentially. But even with that, the CPU in the Genesis was far superior to that of the SNES.

A few things just to keep in mind:
    1. The SNES version was an exclusive launch title for the system. The stock Genesis never got the game back at that time.
    2. The SNES version was made literally over three decades ago. The Genesis version is still not finished as of June 2024.
    3. The SNES game runs in SlowROM, so it's only running at 70% of the system's full CPU speed.
    4. By comparison, Maxwel has optimized SNES Final Fight 3 to run at 60fps without slowdown with two players, and he even reduced the game's forced blank a little further while he was at it too.
    5. The SNES version of Final Fight came on an 8 Mb cartridge. I've heard the Genesis version is 32 Mb.
    6. The stock Genesis version can currently have four enemies on-screen at 60fps, but to have six it runs at 30fps or can be overclocked to have six at 60fps.
    7. Maxwell showed an example of Final Fight 2 with six enemies on-screen, but there's just far too much flicker for more than four to look acceptable there.
Now, with that in mind, I can comfortably say the Genesis version is the better of the two as they both currently exist.

@@Shyning77Dude, either Capcom signed an agreement contract that PREVENTED them from porting this game to the Genesis, or SOMEBODY at Sega of America prolly thought that it wouldn't sell enough copies OR they just didn't have enough confidence in the Genesis hardware's capabilities. Some of the fanboys in here, have even tried to argue the crazy/wild theory that havin' FF on the Genesis would actually CONFLICT with their own SOR games, and steal some of their glory!

    • @Shyning77
      @Shyning77 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@OtomoTenzi Capcom was supporting the SNES better than the MD at that point. I'm pretty sure it has to do with an exclusivity contract between Nintendo and Capcom for that licence (there were two exclusive sequels for the SNES even). I assume Capcom found a workaround later by porting the game to a different system (Mega CD) under a slightly different name (Final Fight CD), kind of what they did with Street Fighter II SCE. Or the time-limited agreement expired.

@@Shyning77 Yeargh, good points all around; but I still blame the management at Sega of America for not getting enough 3rd-party support tho. There were like TONS of JRPGs from Japan that could've seen releases on the Saturn for example, and they FAILED to bring them overseas. The SNES and PSX were both makin' a KILLING on RPGs alone. It is hella ironic that even some WRPGs like Ultima Underworld were available only in Japan. They ported fully working beta copy of Might & Magic III on the Genesis; but then they KILLED it at the last minute, and ported it over to the Sega CD in JAPAN instead. Many RPG fans in America really could've USED a game like that. Sega has made some really BAD marketing decisions in the past, and I kinda blame 'em for it.

More on screen sprites, higher resolution, more frames of animation, faster gameplay. In areas with too many barrel sprites it starts to sloe down. Nothing that can't be ironed out. Overall far superior to the snes version and really shows what the genesis is capable of.
