Wow… I grew up with the genesis version and I never appreciated how good those parallax layers were before. it has a level of depth that you don’t even notice until it goes away.
Yep, parallax scrolling was something you definetly would have noticed back in the day. It was like watching a 3d movie or something, very eye-catching.
Just a reminder that while this is a one to one comparison in the video, the games are not themselves a one-to-one comparison because the MD/Genesis port included the updated Hyper Fighting content, with balance changes, new colors, and increased speed. It's unfortunate that Hyper Fighting content was not included in the PCE/TG16 version, likely due to the timing of its release.
NEC could have asked for Capcom to delay the game like Sega did, but I think little would have changed due to the memory size of the HU-card. Making one to fit all the content would have been expensive for Capcom. Heck the one they used for SF2 has a custom mapper to allow for 4x512KB upper page map banks with a lower 512KB bank .
Totally agree! Also remember that neither did the PC-Engine nor the Super Famicon/SNES have the combo system which made the Sega Genesis port the best port to practice at home before hitting the arcades with those updated hyper fighting kits or the complete hyper fighting cabinets! The Megadrive/Genesis port was a must! before hitting those local tournaments!
The PC Engine never ceases to amaze me. A modified 8-bit CPU and no dedicated CPU for sound yet it still manages to keep up due to its great 16-bit graphics chip.
I’ve owned both versions since the 90’s and while the PC Engine version is an incredible version I’ve always felt the Genesis/MD version bested it. The real shame is that Street Fighter II and many great PC Engine games were never ported outside of Japan to the TurboGrafx-16.
Blame the piss-poor management by the U.S/EU divisions. The same thing happened to the Sega Saturn; so many great games left in Japan because the system was mismanaged.
I agree I think with hindsight the Genesis version is the best playing and has the best music, plus you get Turbo and Champion. Growing up the SNES versions were my favorite but now if I want a 16bit dose of SF it’s either of these two. Unless it’s SuperSF that Genesis version is 😅

@@caseyhayes4590 To be fair, arcade hardware (at least from big players like Capcom and SEGA) being miles ahead of the curve versus contemporary home hardware was to be expected in terms of power and cost. Assuming they were successful games, they'd basically pay for themselves quickly even at such seemingly high operator purchase costs (though IIRC they'd often rent out units rather than buy them, partially explaining why arcades tended to have rotating game rosters). It wasn't until the Dreamcast where the arcade/home power gap really started to close noticeably. I don't count the Neo Geo AES because it was built off the actual MVS arcade hardware, and was aimed at a boutique subsection of gamers rather than the mass gaming market.
Amazing hardware, both versions are brilliant. Let's not forget the amazing Snes as well. Like someone said the arcade tech was quite ahead at the time. But it proves the devs were incredible coders. And squeezed as much out of these great consoles. Now the industry is spoilt with tech & seem lazy, with regards to PS5 already a pro model is on the way. What happened to really pushing tech with really clever coding.
The Turbografx-16/PC-Engine held its own quite well against the other 16-bit systems. Even beating the Sega Genesis in terms of color & sound sampling.
It's amazing how the Turbografx-16 could do so much with its 8-bit, while the MegaDrive could have done a little more with colors, in this particular case. 😅
Both are great ports for their respective platforms. The PC-Engine has better color and managed to deliver clearer voice samples. The Mega Drive has more background detail in most stages, and has a few layers of parallax. Both deliver the line scroll floors. I don't know if it was the split audio, but Vega (US M. Bison) seemed to lack the sound FX for his psycho crusher special attack on the PC Engine.
actually has better colors, sound effects, voice samples on the PCE and holds its own in music, where some tracks sound better on Genesis, but some actually sound better on PCE. Also PCE version 20 mb and Genesis is 24 mb with the turbo mode included as an option.

Cool seeing the PC Engine controller visualized. Goes perfect head to head with six button Genesis controller. 1. Different menu screens. The Genesis version not only offers Dash but Excite speed ratings. Also a little icon that changes instead of a star. Also group battle. 2. Also in the options menu you can change the time limit on the Genesis version. Missing from the PC engine version. 3. Visual elements are different. On Guile's PC Engine stage the USAF logo is on the ground. Missing from the Genesis version. 4. Fond memories of Balrog/Vega's stage. It is one of my favorites stages especially on the Genesis. Being able to climb on the chain linked fence in the background and attack. Also that theme is great.
My favorite stages are: Guile´s stage with the fighter jet in the background, Dhalsim´s stage with the elephants, and Balrog´s stage with the bikini girls.😊
Regarding the USAF logo in Guile's stage, it is present in the Genesis cartridge version. She must be playing the Genesis mini version where it is omitted.
The Genesis version was the most complete in terms of backgrounds and animations but it looked and sounded so rough that I couldn't stand it as a kid. I had both but only played the SNES one. The PC engine version was a marvelous effort. You could tell it was more popular than the Megadrive in Japan by the effort Capcom put into the respective ports. It looks way better than the Genesis. Not even close.
4:57 Notice the PC Engine version has a missing background character on the left of the tree (which the Genesis version has). I'm guessing there might be some less / removed background details on the PC Engine version to improve performance? (or they just... forgot about those? dunno)
LOL. damn... but genny is capable of better sound outputs nlike steeets of rage 2. guess somethings gotta be sacrificed for certain games tho. but then we have homebrew scene devs working wonders. idk who to blame. 😟😁
I realized that the PC Engine lacks foreground elements that the Genesis version has, like the fence and the crane on Zangief's stage. Very interesting.
Both look great. Like the PCE colors more but MD had more layers for parallax scrolling. The PCE could do better in music, I guess developers focused more on the visuals.
The PCE has much warmer colors, and I prefer its sound, too. But as an owner of both versions, and a life long Stree Fighter, I have to say the Genesis port plays the best. This is also comparing the PCE game to the "Champion Edition" mode of the Genesis's Special Champion Edition, which also includes Tubo: Hyper Fighting, which is what I'm going to play 99 times out of 100. Champion Edition just feels slow, and lacks the polish of Hype Fighting.
Normal Mode and Turbo mode are both the same. The nuances of the arcade versions like hit boxes and special move properties are reduced to just the Turbo arcade game. So in effect, Normal mode is exactly the same as Turbo mode, but without the new moves from Turbo. In fact the PC Engine version is based on Turbo mode as well, for example, Balrogs rush punches hit crouching opponents ala Turbo. They do not hit crouching opponents in Arcade Champion Edition.
I actually think the Turbografx version looks better aside from the character portraits. Music is icky though but I'd still be perfectly happy playing that version.
Better colors overall on the PCE version, bu the Genesis port seems to look sharper tho... 🤔 The NEC 6-button controller is pretty RARE and EXPENSIVE nowadays, while Genesis accessories are still pretty cheap and plentiful. As it stands the PCE version is the superior port here; but there IS a nice hack out there that fixes the sound and colors on the Genesis version. While still not 100% perfect, it is very much improved over the vanilla release!
more color on the pc-engine, more resolution on the mega drive. In any case, I have always thought that the mega drive could have had the same scale as the arcade sprites. Due to the fact that it was based on the SNES sprites, it may have ended up this way.
The PC Engine version has some details that are not in the MD version, such as a different dust effect when the characters fall to the ground, and i like that colors, it has something that I don't like at all, that black box in the area of the Health, I imagine that is there for some technical issue.
Megadrive version is objectively the best version out of all the 1st gen of SF2 CPS1 ports, as it's the only one that contained the CPS1 chains. The SNES version is undoubtedly the game changer and the most legendary conversion, but the Megadrive was the only version that "felt" like the arcade. The SNES version, as great as it was, didn't feel like the arcade. I was disappointed that the PC Engine version omitted the CPS1 chains, too.
That's something that a lot of people who haven't played the arcade and both the home console versions from back then don't always get. It's remarkable how closely the Megadrive played to the arcade version. Add in the FM soundtrack and I think it's objectively the best translation even if the color palette and sound FX quality take a hit.
@@m.jordan5181It was 1 year exclusivity contract with Nintendo. After SF2, Capcom became real multi system publisher. Megadrive SF2 version broke Nintendo monopoly, it sold only in Megadrive 1,6 millions of copies, it was really remarkable. And, the best arcades ports were in Saturn.
Immediately it is obvious the vocals are better on the PC-Engine compared to poor levels of vocals on the Genesis, it took an un-offical patch decades later to sort that..
Exemplo: Eu tenho 2 memórias no PC.
Saludos
I own both versions and SF2 Turbo for the SNES. I was and still am a big fan of the Original Arcade version. So for me the Mega Drive version was closest to the Arcade in my opinion. The Mega Drive version plays the best with the official sega 6 button pad which is tied for the best controller of all time IMO with the Sega Saturn controller. It a plays better than the 2 6 button pads that came out for the PC Engine. Also the Mega Drive version plays in Higher Resolution and has the best RGB image out the 3. The PC Engine version looks good in RGB but is over saturated a little and the Super Famicom RGB image is worst than the Mega Drive and PC Engine RGB images even if you have a 1 chip SNES (1 chip SNES RGB is better than a 2 Chip SNES). The player sound effects arent as good on the Mega Drive version but it never bothered me and it is closer to the Arcade compared to the Super Famicom version. The PC Engine wins as far as sound effects out of the 3 but some player sound effects on the Mega Drive are just fine like Guile's Sonic Boom sounds good on the Mega Drive version. As far as the Music the Mega Drive version is the overall winner out of the 3 and sounds closest to the Arcade.
Did you know that there is a patch that fixes the sound and corrects the colors on the Genesis version? 🤔 The hackers and modders are constantly working on those patches, so expect things to look and sound even better in upcoming patch releases. Also, I'm willing to bet that the Sega 6-button pads and Saturn controllers are way more durable than any other controller ever made. All things considered, the Genesis port is the clear and undisputed WINNER.

No Mega, ficou faltando a grama aonde acontece a luta.

PC engine has far better colors, MD looks pale, as its trademark. But MD has far more background animations. (Especially in the Chinese village stage, where PCE is struggling just to have one bicycle pass in the background, where MD has 3 at the same time, as well as the character staffing next to the barber, the barbers sign has animation on the MD)
Second Watch Observations: 1. I see that fighting game players instinct in effect. On both versions you hold back on the D-Pad before each round start. With that you can back up to give your self distance. Or anticipate an attack to block. 2. Interesting that on the Genesis controller that the buttons A,B,C,X,Y,Z are placed left to right. While on the PC Engine the buttons are read left to right on the bottom then right to left on the top. So the Roman Numerals read top row 4,5,6 and bottom row 3,2,1. 3. Also the PC Engine uses run to begin compared to Start on the Genesis controller.
Guile's stage always looked way better on the Mega Drive version compared to the PC Engine and Super Famicom versions. Look at the Jet in the background how much cleaner it looks on the Mega Drive version. Mega Drive had the best RGB out of the 3. PC Engine has the best Composite.
close one, PCE better colors, better sound effects, better voice samples, music is a mixed bag, some tracks sound better on PCE some are better on the Genesis. Genesis has that one layer of background scrolling missing in PCE (noticeable in some levels, not as noticeable in others), more background animations in Genesis (Guile stage for example), also Genesis version had options to play the "Turbo" version of the game sort of making it two versions in one. Arcade had 5 official versions, PCE is the 2nd version Champion Edition, Genesis has options for 2nd version Champion Edition or Turbo 3rd version. I kind of like the PCE version more, but totally get why some would rather have the extras of the Genesis version.
The Sega Genesis sound chip has always sounded bad to me...i said to me. The Genesis has has always had good grahix though. The voices on Genesis sound like they are fighting in water.
This is a close battle but mega drive wins with better parallax better music while the PC engine wins with better colours are better samples over the mega drive wins with much smoother gameplay.
I remember it was all about turbo express with Sf2, then the nomad came out but it was so huge like steam deck....now I don't even want to talk about today's generation where you can even load the CPS1 in a mobile device, but back then it was something else
PC Engine is throwing around more colors than the Genesis, especially when you look at the smoothness of the color gradients in places like the sky in Guile's stage, or the background in Vega's. Obviously the voices are so much clearer than the Genesis. As far as I know, it was some issue with the driver, because there's a beta version of the Genesis version floating around that has much better voices. The Genesis has a pretty snappy beat when it comes to the music though. Very impactful. The PC Engine is fine, but feels a little tinny and underpowered in a few places like Blanka's stage. Doesn't seem like either game really misses a beat when it comes to gameplay, as their roots are clearly derived from the SNES port of World Warrior. That's obviously the most important thing. Everything else, very few people would have noticed back in the day. Most of us were just kids, hyped to the moon that the game we played in the arcade is on our consoles.
No, pc-engines port was done in house by Capcom, and was 2 years earlier then the Genesis and SNES versions. I wonder what they could have achieved if they had just a little more memory on those hu cards. Around the time of Star Oceans release for snes, they had found ways to compress 96 megabytes of data onto a 32 megabyte cart. They had actual voice overs in that game, on a SNES game!
@@ImWithTeamTrinity World Warrior came out in '92 for the SNES, so that was the first console port. CE for the PCE was '93. Special CE for Genesis was out later in '93. Turbo Hyper Fighting for Super was also '93.
The PC-Engline punches way above it's weight but is still honestly... just meh. The Genesis one under delivers, is sloppy, un-optimized and honestly results in ... just meh. It's like two things coming from opposite directions but ends up at a similar spot.

@hepwo91222 I most certainly agree (with the NeoGeo take). The downside to the Neo being a home arcade machine was its massive comparative price-tag during that generation.
@@m.jordan5181 yeah, its just I think the first SF2 WW arcade game with only 8 playable fighters was something like 78 megabits on a more advanced capcom arcade board, SNES version was 16 megabits and was good for what it was. Seems to me like they converted Sf2 from the PC engine version. Sega boys had to wait waaay too long for a version of that game, though in all honestly it was a well packed version, albeit a little late to the table. I ended up buying a snes and SF2 Turbo, but I played the MD version as lot on my nephews megadrive. One of my happiest memories was playing the game with my nephew, he was only 6 and very good at the game vs the CPU, in the sense, he could beat it on normal without continues, this one time, he goes to the bathroom, so I change the difficulty level to hardest, and I run downstairs, about 5 minutes later he's screaming and crying cos he's getting his ass kicked time after and didn't realize his uncle was an evil little shit! Even today that memory still brings tears to my eyes.
Being I've played both and still go back and forth between all SFII versions... Graphics: TurboG16 (PCE) - better use of colors and more detailed stage backgrounds Presentation: Genesis (MD) - slightly cleaner in appearance Sound: TIE Gameplay: Genesis (MD) - more forgiving directional pad when using original controllers / better emulator options to choose from WINNER goes to the Genesis/Mega Drive, but this is a one on one fighter we're talking about, OF COURSE Sega won, lol... Genesis often had crumby voice effects. That was a time when console wars were warranted. Today, every version of a game looks nearly identical to each other... You can see some differences, but nothing that would make it unplayable.
It's not one generation behind. The PC Engine was released not even one year before the Mega Drive. Although it has an 8-bit CPU, it's considered part of the 4th console generation. Thinking in terms of generations is arbitrary and misleading, anyway.
Melhores cores e vozes: PC Engine.
i have both versions, PC engine is really good, clear voices and nice colors but missing paralx scrolling and a lot of details like the fence in the foreground of zangueif stage. Genesis has paralax, more detail, better music but horrible voices, but has more options, genesis all the way.
@@miriamalmeida6687 Genesis version retains all combos from the arcade, while re-dizzying combos are taken away from the SNES version. Normal Mode and Turbo mode are both the same. The nuances of the arcade versions like hit boxes and special move properties are reduced to just the Turbo arcade game. Even if they (NEC) had asked for a delay, the Hu-Card could only hold so much data.
@@fappening-j6c Both these versions were based off of the SNES version (which was the ultimate version for home consoles at the time).
On the MegaDrive version you can choose between Turbo/Hyper Fighting version and the classic Champion Edition...

The Genesis version is better but the PC Engine is still very good
Yeah. The PC Engine really punches above its weight class here. No other 8-bit machine got a port this good.
Note though that the PC Engine version came out years before the Megadrive/Genesis version.
But, it is because SF2 was exclusivity to SNES. Capcom waited 1 whole year for lauching in Sega Megadrive. Thank you, Nintendo.
It's crazy to me that a budget minded 1987 console can do SFII that close to the arcade.
Good 'ol "12bit"
The cps1 arcade hardware was also released during that time period 1987-1988
@@Spolupyo that's nuts. I bet the factory cost was like $40 vs $2000 not even including the cabinet.

Its insane how good a fight the PC Engine is putting up here. Its a souped up 8-bit console, standing toe-to-toe with a proper 16-bit console.

Street fighter 2 remastered by Pyron is the 16bits overall winner 🎉

Notice the PC Engine version has a missing background character on the left of the tree (which the Genesis version has).
I'm guessing there might be some less / removed background details on the PC Engine version to improve performance? (or they just... forgot about those? dunno)
Vega stage PC ENGINE has guitar players and dancers have more animations than the Snes plus Genesis
The voices in PC Engine is clean, closet tô the arcade. The vocês in Sega Mega Drive is like an old smoker.
LOL. damn...
but genny is capable of better sound outputs nlike steeets of rage 2.
guess somethings gotta be sacrificed for certain games tho.
but then we have homebrew scene devs working wonders. idk who to blame. 😟😁
I realized that the PC Engine lacks foreground elements that the Genesis version has, like the fence and the crane on Zangief's stage. Very interesting.
PC Engine has better voices, but the music is pretty bad.
Then SEGA Genesis wins for the soundtracks
but the CD version
I think the music is decent on the PC engine, but there’s no doubt the best voices go to the PC engine.
The NEC 6-button controller is pretty RARE and EXPENSIVE nowadays, while Genesis accessories are still pretty cheap and plentiful.
As it stands the PCE version is the superior port here; but there IS a nice hack out there that fixes the sound and colors on the Genesis version.
While still not 100% perfect, it is very much improved over the vanilla release!
The PCE version doesn't have parallax scrolling. Didn't notice until now.
more color on the pc-engine, more resolution on the mega drive.
The popularity of the SNES version cannot be overstated. I can't think of many other third party SNES games that sold *that* many copies.
That's something that a lot of people who haven't played the arcade and both the home console versions from back then don't always get. It's remarkable how closely the Megadrive played to the arcade version. Add in the FM soundtrack and I think it's objectively the best translation even if the color palette and sound FX quality take a hit.
To be fair, the popularity of the SNES version existed primarily because it was the first home conversion available at the time.
@@m.jordan5181It was 1 year exclusivity contract with Nintendo. After SF2, Capcom became real multi system publisher. Megadrive SF2 version broke Nintendo monopoly, it sold only in Megadrive 1,6 millions of copies, it was really remarkable. And, N64 hadnt 3rd party publisher games, like Final Fantasy, as consequence.
Next generation, all Capcom arcades games were release on PS or Sega Saturn, not in N64. And, the best arcades ports were in Saturn.
Immediately it is obvious the vocals are better on the PC-Engine compared to poor levels of vocals on the Genesis, it took an un-offical patch decades later to sort that..
Great home port for both systems. Awesome stuff!
Remember that both these versions are based on the SNES version (with sprites pulled out directly from SNES SF2 World Warriors).
Only graphically, the genesis is using the source code from the arcade version and contains all the combos.

the PC engine doesn't have the arcade intro with the crowd , two guys and the tower scroll up
Exemplo: Eu tenho 2 memórias no PC.
Genesis version has more parallax effects, better loading times and better music. I'll stay with it.
And genesis has more modes, more turbo, not censored, better controller 6 button. And not cropped
The hackers and modders are constantly working on those patches, so expect things to look and sound even better in upcoming patch releases.
Also, I'm willing to bet that the Sega 6-button pads and Saturn controllers are way more durable than any other controller ever made. All things considered, the Genesis port is the clear and undisputed WINNER.
Hate to admit it. But genesis version is better in all aspects, and I absolutely love the pc engine.
O som do mega drive parece estourado. Grato!

They both look good, but the FX has an edge due to slightly bigger sprites and noticeably more colors.
Second Watch Observations:
Sega Genesis control system is awesome 😎😎
close one, PCE better colors, better sound effects, better voice samples, music is a mixed bag, some tracks sound better on PCE some are better on the Genesis.
The PC Engine port is very impressive

PC Engine!!
Even though it was ignored in the color palette of the Genesis, it is the better version
In Dalshim stage the lack of parallax effect is very obvious!!! However the colors on PC engine stand out!!!

Graphics: TurboG16 (PCE) - better use of colors and more detailed stage backgrounds
Presentation: Genesis (MD) - slightly cleaner in appearance

Gameplay: Genesis (MD) - more forgiving directional pad when using original controllers / better emulator options to choose from

It's not one generation behind. The PC Engine was released not even one year before the Mega Drive. Although it has an 8-bit CPU, it's considered part of the 4th console generation. Thinking in terms of generations is arbitrary and misleading, anyway.
Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive winner
Pc engine is close to arcade accurate, genesis is more on home gaming system and good port to.
Sega better, parallax scrolling, turbo mode, and more details.
NEC looks to be a wee bit better (I own and love the mega drive)
Both have their pros and cons.
PC Engine version plays and sounds much better. 8 bit powah!
Genesis voices are almost always horrific 😂😭
It's a developer issue, the modded version of SF2 for the Genesis proves it.
@@S.Madmancontinua inferior ao pc emgine e snes 😂😂
@@miriamalmeida6687 Genesis version retains all combos from the arcade, while re-dizzying combos are taken away from the SNES version. Also PCE was just champion edition while the Genesis version is that plus the Hyper Fighting edition.
Genesis also ran smoother than the SNES. SNES had a slight pause between rounds, and it’s really noticeable on SSF2 because the music doesn’t play continuously through rounds like it’s supposed to.
And personal preference, I like the music better on the Genesis than either version.

Just wondering would the PC Engine version sound better if you use composite cables.
