In this game, Capcom didn't do a good job on either SNES or Genesis. The SNES sound chip is slightly better, it's also a console two years younger, but both consoles can provide much better sound - see Castlevania or Turrican on both systems.

I think the genesis version was a bigger game with 40Megs in comparison to the SNES version which had a 32Megs cartridge. Which is why the genesis version had a bigger screen and a few extras like more animation. SNES version i notice that still had more things moving on stages and looked more alive than the genesis version.

Many people can still debate which version is better, but in my opinion, Genesis version is better because it is not censored and has more data like sounds and graphics (look at the intro and the endings), unlike SNES version.

how the soundchip of the snes was build, was one of the best though, it was pretty much sample based, most of the games had 16bit sounds but was downgraded to 12bit to save space. also many said it was a pain in the ass to create music, Tim Follin a mastermind of its own, stated it was like hell and he did the soundtrack for the game Plok, even Miyamoto was shocked how good it sounded so the game never really got promotion and it failed at that time. check Plok and you can see Rayman lol

The contortions you put your mind through to justify your position is hilarious. You will emphasize a few changed pixels or an extra frame of animation on an opening yet ignore all of the missing colors and color choices that look really off due to the technical limitations of the Genesis. Stop being ridiculous. Both versions play fine but the SNES version is clearly the winner in both graphics and audio.

SNES is missing quite a lot of animation across the board, Cammy looks broken while standing on SNES, Ryu intro is very stiff on SNES, plus so many sound effects are missing, not to mention the actual music is closer on MD. The SNES has a squeakyness to the overall sound quality.
On MD you have a great 6 Button controller to use. Also, true street fighter vets know the SNES dose not have ALL the possible combos like the arcade.

@@davidaitken8503 Well, yes, SNES beats Genesis by having more colors, but due to how SNES cartridge is smaller than those of Genesis (32 megabits on SNES vs 40 megabits on Genesis), some features were cut from SNES version. Announcer does not say "Round" and "Fight" (and, in some SNES versions, character names), and aside from intro animation being altered, some endings were altered as well, some with graphics reused from same or other endings (Balrog/Boxer's ending from SNES version, for example, uses podium from Ryu's ending), some use the "black bars and a fighter on Bison/Dictator's stage" (like Chun-Li's first part of her ending).

This game once again underutilizes the capabilities of the Mega Drive.
Those horrible black bars would not have been necessary since the Mega Drive can display a correct aspect ratio.
Furthermore, it has been demonstrated thanks to the Brazilian development scene that the sprites of the original arcade size could have been ported without problems (look for Rheogamer's demo of SF II or simply the port of Real Bout Fatal Fury Genesis which is even more demanding in animation detail and character size) without having to lose horizontal definition or having to increase the VBlank time to update tiles.
As for the video, I prefer the MD version. A 6 front button control brings you closer to the arcade experience, plus, playably, I always noticed a better response in the control. In addition, details such as being able to see 2 simultaneous cyclists in Chun-Li's level in the MD version give the sensation of having more vivid backgrounds.

it had to be a good port cause it used the biggest cart on genesis. if only they can fix
the sad low quality of the ost in the sega version of ssf2...rather have that then a few
more sprite animations. it takes down the experience a little. compared to sf2 champ
      on genesis.
it is amazing what the homebrews show genesis could do tho with snk fighters too.
wish we had that back in the day. on genesis. it was possible to have near arcade
perfect sprites. hope to see a full games out of it soon... the alpha port for genesis
      is also sick.
but other then that it is better then snes ssf2. if only the snes version played more like

SNES replicates colors and sounds of the arcade far more closely than Genesis does (hardware limitations for which there was no workaround). That is what makes SNES version much more nicer overall IMO.

    • @allbundy432
      @allbundy432 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@kamranki The sound on the SNES is muffled and its melodies barely last 90 seconds due to lack of space and limited memory of the SPC700 (That's why they reset every round). The missing vocals are also noticeable. The sound on the Mega Drive is more faithful as it shares an FM chip from the same family that has CPS-1, not to mention the forcefulness with which it is appreciable from the blows made on the Sega console. Whether it's closer or closer to what the arcade version shows in colors is really irrelevant if the control and fluidity don't go along with it.
The limitations are found in Nintendo's machine where it would be impossible to support sprites and animations carried directly from the arcade unless the size of the black bars increased. And not to mention the resolution that limits it at all times and of which there is no other solution that we see it: Small characters to maintain the original distances between the arcade characters. A port for MD using its capabilities would be impossible to bring to the SNES due to hardware limitations.

    • @proyectomegadrive
      @proyectomegadrive ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@kamranki What I'm talking about is that if the game had been programmed taking into account the capabilities of MD, a game would come out that was much more faithful to the arcade in practically every sense and unattainable in its counterpart on the Nintendo console due to technical limitations (as already showed Rheogamer and his Brazilian friends).
Personally I prefer the melodies shown in the Mega Drive version, much closer to those of the CPS-1 board. Whether you think the SNES version of this game is better is just another opinion, I prefer good playability, fluidity, control response, speed, shorter loading times, over color. Which for me, makes the Mega Drive version "much nicer overall"

    - I think the characters look better, and stand out more on Sega.
    - Backgrounds are mostly better looking on the SNES, esp Balrog's stage.
    - The sound is a toss-up, what you might be feeling that day. Both systems have their musical merits across soundtracks and systems. Both have a lot of nostalgia for me and I'm glad devs still pull inspiration from this in modern games.
    - Aside from obvious omissions/dev and producer choices I feel w/ the limited color palette but faster CPU on the Sega and far greater color palette and sound chip on the SNES you have a "limitations foster creativity situation" where each strikes an arguable equal balance to their respective strengths.

I notice you have an image of a modern-day 8BitDo third party 6-button wireless controller below the Genesis version, so why can't you at least have something like the C&L Championship Joystick as the third party controller image below the SNES version?
I understand the default SNES controller is so good that it can stand on its own against basically any Genesis controller both first and third party and old and new, but, if you're going to allow random third party controllers that would enhance the experience even further, there's simply nothing better for playing Street Fighter II on either of these systems than the C&L Championship Joystick for SNES.
It might help to have the same controller conditions for each system, which is either the default controller (that would be the Genesis 3-button pad and the SNES standard pad) or allow both versions to use the best controller available for them equally.

It's below average sound for sure, but my claim is that the overall experience with the gameplay is so much better than any other option, that you can just deal with it. Obviously if they were able to get the sound to a higher level and fix the voice samples like some of the patches have done since then, it would be an A+++ game. But the other games that are comparable to this one have bigger problems, so it still makes it the best. Both versions were amaizing, but I give a slight edge in the graphics department to the SNES because of the smother color transitions and slightly bigger character sprites. In terms of gamplay, I always felt that both were equally responsive but playing this with the Genesis 6 button pad is pure perfection. Sound is better on the SNES. You can't go wrong with either version, but at the end of the day I always preferred the Genesis version because of that 6 button controller layout. Having the all six buttons on the face of the pad was perfect for SF and the Dpad was also better than the SNES controller.

Let just bring out the obvious: The Sound is a disgrace on the Genesis soundchip! Especially when the previous SF2:CE sounded way better.
In the Ryu intro, He has more animations in the Genesis version but more colors in the SNES version. The Genesis version also runs a higher resolution & is less censored.
1st stage - The SNES version has a scrolling sky & extra background layer.
2nd stage - I like the more vibrant colors on the Genesis than the SNES version.
3rd stage - The SNES has more animations on the background. the Aurora in the sky looks like half the frame rate on the Genesis.
4th stage - The portrait on the wall looks a little more detailed in the SNES version, not much of a major difference.
5th stage - very minor difference again, the colors look slightly more vibrant in the Genesis to me.
6th stage - it's hard to see with the jet in the way, but if you look close enough there are Tree's in SNES version while Genesis version is just green pixel lines. Also people in the background has more colors in the SNES version.
7th stage - People in the background in the Genesis version has faster animations.
8th stage - very minor difference again, just different coloration.
9th stage - on the middle sign it says NIN NIN HALL on the Genesis & GOLDWIN on the SNES, also the Top Right & Top Left signs have different colors on both systems, & the 2 ladies in the background are wearing 2 different colors on the SNES while they're the same on the Genesis.
10th stage - the 2 ladies in the middle have different colors. The SNES version also has lighting animations.
11th stage - Buddha & the platforms has slightly different colors. other than, minor differences.
Final stage - the building in the background is Orange & Green on the Genesis, but Red & Green on the SNES. Also the Statues on the SNES version has more colors.
Bison Ending - Genesis version Bison has facial animations & a layered background. SNES version Bison looks like he locked his jaw. But you do get some nice SNES effect going.

Anyway, I do believe that it might just provide the best way to play SF2 on a 16-Bit console. Of course it wasn't the version that was available to gamers back in the early 90s.

When Special Champion Edition for the Genesis and Turbo for the SNES went head to head, it was a lot closer. They still had tradeoffs, but it was much more of a competitive comparison. Super, on the other hand? That was when I saw the SNES pulling ahead. Look at the sky, for example, in Guile's stage at 10:20. See how the blending of the blue color is so much smoother in the Super Nintendo? You can clearly see the banding on the Genesis version as it hits that 64 color limitation. Also at 5:58 on Cammy's stage, look at the color blending and movement of the northern lights. It's so much smoother and more subtle on the SNES, while it looks like neon street signs on the Genesis. And obviously, the audio presentation was clearly in the SNES' favor now.
Of course, at the end of the day, almost no one cared if the Super Nintendo had more color or that the Genesis had a few more frames in the Ryu intro animation. Someone might remark on how lousy the voices were on the Genesis, but then they'd forget all about it as soon as Start was hit. It was still Street Fighter II and you'd have a blast playing it on either system.

As for the reasoning behind my choice, I've already given plenty: 8 million bits more content. If I haven't added anything else is because the rest is essentially the same. But the additional graphics and sounds make a more complete experience in megadrive, from my point of view.

O Snes ganha na qualidade das vozes, mas perde nas músicas, que ficaram melhor no Mega pela proximidade do Yamaha com a CPS2, as músicas no Snes foram ate bem adaptadas, mas não são fiéis ao Arcade como no Mega. SNES has slight better colors, the menu layout is better, and the letter fonts and shadowing are better. The SNES also has better sound selections (better audio chip) and better character shadowing. The SNES has the better backgrounds. The SEGA version sprites are less washed out and stand out more. I do think that the SEGA stage music is better compared to the SNES even lacking better sound. The SEGA shows the characters after battle as more "beaten up". I had the SEGA version, and my friend had the SNES version. I think the MAIN and only difference that matters is that the SEGA controller had only three buttons requiring you to get a six button controller to play this optimally.

The sound is much better on the SNES. That Sony chip made a huge difference. The Genesis’ audio was muddy in comparison, and even if the Genesis loaded faster, I can’t stomach the way it sounds like someone pouring water into my eardrums. I have a lot more patience for the SNES’s loading times, because the audio feels closer to the cabinet version.

  • @alexanderseton
    @alexanderseton ปีที่แล้ว +1

It seems that both game ports are very close to each other. The final choice is a matter of taste.
SNES: much better sound quality, with voice and sound effects similar to the original game. It also has a much better color depth, allowing subtle image effects in the background that the MD/Genesis port doesn’t show. Animation frames are missing and the game feels laggy at some instances.
MD/Genesis: much more fluid animation and overall game speed. The color depth is not as good as in SNES, but this aspect is compensated by a higher contrast/ definition of the color palette. The sound is awful, with complete voice captures and sound effects missing.
In both ports the backgrounds/scenery seem well implemented, player frames are about the same sizes and despite the larger screen resolution of MD/Genesis compared to SNES, both ports seem pretty similar.
I would try anyone, but the bad part is that the Sega port only plays well IF you have a 6-button controller. This is a non-standard feature compared to the normal SNES controller that allowed plug-and-play without add ons. This difference could be a game changer for some people
