Use some temporary clamp-on lights. Clamp them to the stringers or web frames and point them up at the ceiling. The light will reflect off the ceiling and light the rest of the room. Remember, it's only temporary until you can decide on permanent lighting.

I've got to the age where they say, if you want 20 years out of that you need to do it this way. If I live that long I think it will be someone elses problem by then. So I get a resonable job done instead of perfection. I mean, for crying out loud it took 10 weeks to get a single pulley from Sweden, when I could have done the job in an hour with a second hand one without paying enough to bolster the Swedish export industry for a week. Volvo are Chinese owned anyway.

If we're just talking temporary lighting until you get an idea of cabin design, think about this... You now have white ceilings, think about temporary 24v lights on the hull pointed up to bounce light off the ceiling. You could even put a little shroud around them to concentrate the light.

For the lights, since you want to highlight the beams, do up-lights (from the deck, or lower rail or somewhere) along the side of the boat (outside perimeter of the room). With the white ceilings, it should be plenty. It will also create some dramatic ambiance.

For attaching the lighting, have you looked at 3M Command Strips? They sick to the surface but release without leaving residue. They work great. Other options include lights strung along the beam shelf and uplights a little further down that illuminate the overhead from below. That white overhead should do a good job of reflecting and diffusing light from below.

Led strip lights for caravan awnings would be the way to go. Run them off a 12-240v adapter and they're light enough to be able to velcro them onto the beams.

I have to say I have never seen a wife like yours Simon. She is a one in a million that’s for sure. As for your lighting below deck get round led lights where you can use a lot throughout the boat that will give you lots of light and use very little power to turn them on. You can even use strips of led lights all along the top of the wall and do the same thing.

A few videos back you asked about how to avoid air bubbles under the glass. One of the things I do is apply a skim coat of epoxy on the wood, and let it go off. Then give it a quick scrap to knock off any bubbles and junk. While the epoxy is still green, apply another goat of epoxy than the glass, work it in with the bubble roller, and then add more epoxy on top and work it in again. My experience that style glass is a lot harder to work out the air than eglass.
I always look forwards to your weekly videos. Good luck

to fix lightweight lights to the underside of the deck = cut a timber batten / noggin and jamp in between the deck beams - no fixings just cut slightly longer than the opening
when complete knock the noggins out leaving no marks or fixing holes

Lights, 24v is the way to go.
Few options for temporary setup. Make up some temporary wire harnesses. Concept wise do something like what is used for outdoor low voltage lighting. You can easily add subtract lights as you need to move them. Just use a 12 gauge wire for any longer or main runs. Clamp the wires to existing structure, using binder clips, spring clamps, or run the wires through existing holes. 3M has command hooks that are for clipping up desk wiring.
Lights, few options, take a few spring clamps and drill a hole in one end and bolt the light fixture to the spring clamp. Easy to move around. More permanent solution, is 3M Command strips. Easy and clean to remove. But the strip is dead once used.
Good Luck, I know the two of you will find a great solution.

Here are a couple of suggestions for temporary non permanently attached lighting depending on what you think would work best:
    1. old fashioned inexpensive 8.5 inch wide aluminium reflector clamp lights (e27 bulb socket). Search for "8.5 inch aluminium clamp lamp" on the chinese selling site that starts with ali for an example. These can be simply clamped onto the beams, or the frames where needed. You could run 240v ac to them and use led bulbs, or buy e27 12v or 24v led bulbs and feed power to them that way. The thing I like about these is the clamps can open pretty wide -- probably wide enough to put on your beams, and the rubber covering should protect whatever they are clamped to. The clamps have a ball swivel that allows the socket and 8.5 inch wide aluminium reflector to be pointed wherever you want.
    2. You could hang some led strip lights on the frames. These can be fed wth 12v or 24v dc power and moved as needed. You could mount strips on 8 foot 1x2s and clamp the 1x2s to the frames.
I hope these ideas are helpful.
    Cheers from Oregon, USA
    Philip

My suggestion for ambient lighting in the forward cabin is building a custom fixture (shade) that fits close to tight between two beams. Install a high power led lamp inside the shade, mount it between the beams so that the light washes across the ceiling and reflects downward. Indirect lighting of this sort will show off your ceiling and beams and it should also guarantee that there are no shadows. If you have a specific task area - like a workbench - install a lamp on an adjustable arm that mounts to the workbench and plugs into an outlet or power strip. You should be able to sun several circuits so that a portion of the space is lit or all of it depending on need and future buildout. I imagine you could run the cable along the top stringer so it would be invisible.
i imagine these shades would be made from brake and roll formed aluminum with welded on end caps, a polished/reflective/mirror interior surface and the outside painted the color of your choice. This is a design you definitely have the skills to execute.
The second convenience/functional electrical run is plug in wall outlets spaced closer than normal residential spacing. This way, if you decide to partition the space, as long as you line up with a deck beam, the electricals are done.
There is no reason why this scheme would not work throughout the entire lower deck - with the exception of supplemental overheads in the engine room. But concealing overhead wiring is not as important in a utility space like the engine room. This could be a "Once and Done" plan. 😊
All the best my friends ♥

No matter what you do you’ll be rewiring anyway, with unistruts across from side to side you can hang brighter 12V and a few 240 in select spots….or some variation of that maybe? Maybe a baton along the new beams, front-to back- of the boat, held in place with upright supports, free standing, would eliminate the need for screws into the new beams. LED strips run from the gen, could be worth a try.
The new beams look beautiful in the sunlight, probably the last time they will ever be seen in this way too.
Then, to see them with the new deck in place is equally as beautiful.
The cost of those copper nails is quite a sobering revelation. Your continuing determination is inspirational.
My Friday fix, delivered on time as usual. Noticed that you are both "under the weather", nautical term for "feeling sick". Thanking you both, and, all of your supporters for this latest episode. Hope you are feeling better soon.
Progress on Sarinda is a credit to you all.

One solution for the lights is expanding rods, like the ones on shower curtain rails with plastic clamps holding the light to the pole.

Retired sparky here. I agree with the many about a temporary lighting setup. Those 24V LEDs will need only thin old wire (You can work out the size on Google). You could hang one next to each pothole and the hull angle will illuminate the white ceilings for now. As for the final solution, maybe some low profile flat panel LEDs on the ceiling. If you take them off their frames, I think you could actually curve them to fit the deck curve?

Gemma, i have been a supporter sice you first bought the boat and enjoy visiting you and Simon weekly. i watch a content provider that does art restoration. He does two versions of some projects. One with all of the talking and interaction, the other edited with just the actual work, parts done at fast speed. No talking, just music and work. I was thinking that if you made a condensed edit each week, it would make fast work of a year-in-30 minute video easier to compile, and also provide a quick 10-15 minute video for folks that don’t have the time to watch the whole thing. Just a thought, caused you know being a mom and wife running two channels rebuilding a boat, learning to fish, and dealing with fans just isn’t enough for one woman!!!

It might sound too easy...The light problem...A long batton diagonally from one side to the other, just under the "lubbly beams" with LED ceiling light fitted every couple of feet, on the up side of the batton, shining onto the white boards to reduce glare to your eyes and shadows. The ends pinned into the ribs at either end or just lashed to a nail in the ribs. Both the batton and the LED lights could be used in other parts of the boat - but will give bright temporary lighting for the Winter nights. You could alternatively also use 12v strip LED's on top of the battons and again reuse for concealed decoration in the finished boat.
BEFORE you do too much under the bridge....get a couple of arco props for safety, Gemma's head is needed later during the reconstruction work!! She is literally such a GEM!! Bless you both!! John

How about using indirect lighting: mount fixtures in troughs on the hull, facing up rather than down, illuminating the white painted ceiling. That would make the wiring invisible so you wouldn't have to swap batteries all the time.

Hello fellow boaters, regarding the lighting I would try clamp lights at the sides aimed up and reflect off that beautiful ceiling. ? I've used urethane sealant / adhesive for years. The downside is that to pull it apart you'll delaminate the wood. So don't make mistakes!😮 Great job on a huge project! We're Great Lakes sailors out of Sheboygan Wisconsin.

for your light issues, they used to make, and probably still do some lights that have a big metal reflector and on the back side, they have a spring clamp that you could probably clamp on a beam. Amazon has them, they call them Clamp Lamps.

You asked us what you would do for lights. Have you thought about using your leds on the side of the boat. That way you could use them either way. Like as up lighters, down lighters. That way you can run the wires behind until you start working on that job. Plus like you said the leds are 24 volts so don’t use a lot of power. Plus keep up the great work. I’ve been watching from the start. Been waiting for this as much as you both have and it’s absolutely amazing. Well done. Look forward to seeing more.

Hi you both; bounced lighting is the key here; simply fix lights to the interior sides of the boat pointed to your new white ceilings. Stick cardboard/anything in front of the lights to avoid the light in your eyes. Bingo; soft light without attaching to the roof beams etc. PS; love your work!............Rob XX

I have an idea about the lighting-issues, I have tried out a couple of things while working on my house. I normally have a light on a piece of wood, that I can clamp onto something with a C-clamp (that also allows you to experiment with the placement of your lights). And if you put a piece of cloth between the shiny beam and your clamp, you could screw a 90 degree bracket onto your plate that has the light on it and just clamp it up. Maybe also experiment with lights that mount roughly in the place of your portholes and shine towards the white ceiling. They also sell desklamps with a plastic clamp on them by the way.

Really enjoy to watch you two working together. So down to earth both of you, no bullshit and no hiding how hard your work in reallity is!
For lighting down under, I would choose HUE led light strips solo (new model), and fasten then with either doublesided tape er small screw holders. These can be bought in 3, 5 and 10 meters and they can be shortend.
